I know what happens in the Fire Tides.

Richard Hamilton, who was a writer for the Fire Tides and had a hand in other Dragons stories that we love, did an interview of sorts with Audrie Greywind on her youtube channel. The entire interview is almost two hours and he spends that whole time telling Audrie, and us, the entire plot of the Fire Tides.

She also has another video on her channel revealing the winner of the Shirtless Hiccup art contest, where Richard Hamilton chose a fan's art to be the Official Canon representation of Shirtless Hiccup, since the Fire Tides hasn't been released visually.

Do you ever put off writing the next chapter because you're so attached to your characters that it actually hurts you to feel their feelings and you know what you're about to do to them and you just know it'll turn you into a giant puddle, so you save it for a time when you're equipped to handle those emotions, but you're never really able to handle it?

@sasstrid-and-dorkcup YES!!! I really think so! This special made a great job of solidifying Lila as a threat while also giving us a roadmap to defeating her. She is so so so smart but at the same time so so so easy to break!

One thing I find very interesting about the special is that Chronobug defeated Lila by making her doubt herself. By forging her handwriting and making her think there was something wrong with her plan. And we know how Lila reacted — taking it out on Nooroo until she got a chance to cool down, then immediately waking them up and transforming once more. It seems she does not have nearly as much self-esteem as she pretends to have, and very quickly felt the need to regain confidence by committing even more evil butterfly crimes.

Honestly I’m on the edge of my seat. We’ve known Lila for a long time, but we don’t actually know her at all, and it feels like meeting an entirely new character! 🦋

Summary: Eclipsa has captured Marco, Star seems to have vanished, and Marco is losing hope fast.

It’s hard to have any hope when you’re stuck in the predicament Marco was in.

Everything that had been happening on Mewni since he came back was like kindling being added to the fire of his rage. It was painful to see Star essentially disappear into Toffee (for what he thought was) forever. It was painful to come back to Mewni to figure out why his heart leaped in his chest whenever he thought of Star, only to see that she had seemingly moved on from him.

But now he was at the mercy of Mewni’s darkest queen, and Marco was having trouble seeing the light at the end of the tunnel…it was hard to have any more hope of things turning out okay. He had no idea what happened to Star after he was taken away. He was worried sick, he didn’t know where she was, or how he was ever going to get out of this…

“You seem to be in quite a lot of pain, dear,”

Marco was quickly snapped out of his thoughts.

“What do you mean? Nothing’s in pain right now.”

“I didn’t mean on the outside, dear boy,” She paused, walking up to him and placing a finger gently on his heart.

“I meant in here.”

Marco swallowed nervously.

He didn’t dare say a word.

“There is a lot of pain in here. Pain from seeing the girl you’re so in love with happy with someone else. This pain has been manifesting itself as anger. And that anger is piling up, festering inside you…building up until it will have nowhere to go but out. And when it does come out,”

She moved his finger away from his heart, slowly dragging it up his arm as she continued to speak.

“It will all come out at once, right through here.”

Marco tried to swallow his fear but it wouldn’t go away. Eclipsa gently poked Marco’s arm with her glowing hand; an action that gave Marco a flash of monster arm.

Eclipsa smiled a terrifying smile.

“It really must be hard, being so in love with her and seeing how she must have moved on from you…don’t you think it’s what you deserve, after causing her the same kind of pain?”

As she spoke, her finger began to glow with magic as she held it firmly on his hand. Her magic was surrounding his arm, and somehow sending an intense, crushing pain through it.

Marco gasped, making a sound that was soaking with pain; the same tone he spoke with a moment later.

“How did you know about that stuff?”

“Oh, I know about everything. Star has confided in me about all of it. You know, you really caused her a great deal of pain. Do you really think you deserve her after all that?”

Marco was silent for a moment. He had had that thought many times since Star had confessed her feelings. He had pushed that thought away so many times since then, that hearing it out loud hurt him even more.

“N-no, stop! I-I know what I did hurt her, but I didn’t do it on purpose!”

“Does that matter? You still hurt her. You told her you wanted to just be friends. She tried to get over you but you came back and dredged up all that pain. Do you think she’s just going to come crawling back to you now?” Every word Eclipsa said dug into Marco like nails, bringing tears to his eyes.

“You’re wrong, you’re wrong! Star would never believe anything like that!”

He wasn’t convincing himself anymore. His arm was screaming so loudly in pain that it seemed like the screaming wasn’t just in his mind anymore.

“No? Well why don’t you just ask her then?”

Marco’s eyes widened, jaw dropping to the floor. From out of the corner of the room, out of the shadows, Star emerged. It wasn’t the Star Marco knew and loved, though. Her eyes were completely turned dark purple, nearly black.

“STAR! NOO!”

“You hurt me, Marco,” Star said, in a voice that was lacking the usual Star Butterfly happiness and hope that he loved so much. “You told me that we should just be friends. That you didn’t feel that way about me. You came back to Mewni when I was trying to get over you. I had to watch you and Jackie be happy together while I felt like you just forgot about me.”

Time goes by And I've been holding everything inside But now I've got nothing left to hide When I'm with you, oh, you

But I can see How strong a man I'm gonna have to be To do for you what comes so naturally It's in the way you move

And all I want Is a chance to prove Show all I can do

“Star STOP!” Marco yelled. “I know I caused you pain, b-but I’m sorry about that!” Marco was breathing hard now, trying to talk through the intense pain in his arm. He didn’t dare to look at it as a familiar purple, slimy face began to form on it.

“I slap myself every single day over that! I hate that I did that to you, I hate that I ever caused you pain, and I wish I could take it all away, b-but…”

He paused, squeezing his eyes shut tight for a moment as the pain overwhelmed him. He took a deep breath and tried to continue. He knew he had to keep going. He had to be strong now, for Star.

“I’ve seen who you really are, Star, and this isn’t it,” Marco began.

“You’re the coolest girl I’ve ever known in my life. You crashed into my life over a year ago and brought so much happiness and light with you that it blinded me. It blinded me so much that it took me this stupidly long to realize how I felt,”

There were tears cascading down his cheeks now, both because of his physical pain, and because of how much it hurt him to see Star like this.

“You are so strong, Star, and you’re amazingly brave, you care about everyone intensely, and seeing you like this is killing me inside because it feels like that strong, amazing, adventurous, brave girl, is gone. And I need her back. I need her back because she inspires me to be my strongest self every single day. She inspires me to be my best self, she inspires me to be someone she’d be proud to have as her best friend. She stands up for what she believes in, no matter how much resistance she’s met with. She always manages to persevere. No matter how tough the going gets, she always seems to come out on top. I-I need that Star back, b-because I…well, because I love her.”

It seemed, in that moment, that all the pain had gone away. For a moment, everything was okay. His words seemed to have frozen Star in place, as if there was an intense battle going on inside her mind that was triggered by something he said.

But then he heard the familiar, sinister laugh of monster arm, and suddenly, he remembered all the pain he was in.

“Aauuughh!” He cried. The pain was so intense and crippling that it made him lightheaded. It felt like he was beginning to fade out of consciousness. He knew he had to use the last of his strength to save Star.

And all I want Is to know you're near You're all I need here

“L-look, Star,” it was getting hard for him to speak, “I-I know I probably don’t deserve you, b-because of h-how much I hurt you in the past, and because I’m just some lowly, boring h-human with a monster arm, b-but if you’re in there, I r-really need you b-back…”

Marco blacked out as the room filled with the sound of monster arm’s sinister cackling, in harmony with Eclipsa’s laughter.
