Women in Mahabharata - Savitri

Born after the blessings imparted by the goddess Savitri, she is the daughter of Madra's King Ashvapati and his queen Malavi, who names her after the goddess herself.
Her fierce, independent personality threw off most men from seeking marriage, and therefore her father finally allowed Savitri to find her own life partner.
Savitri traveled across many forests and kingdoms until she came across Chitrashva-Satyavana, the son of the blind king Dyumatsena of the Shalva cluster.
After Narada and Ashvapati vehemently refust to endorse this marriage, Savitri debates them in open court until they give in.
Once the one-year time-frame elapses, Satyavana collapses with a headache (that was maybe just a retcon, and the actual issue could have been something like an aneurysm). Savitri debates with Yama (nurses him back to health?). She employs a clever play of words in order to save her husband
She, and one of Shalva's ministers later helps (physically or emotionally) her father-in-law reascend to the throne of Shalva.
To me, there are a few points of interest:
Shalva and Madra are both primarily oligarchical settings, so a marriage between them is honestly not unusual.
Also, the Madra and ashva (horse) connection. Madra is basically the modern Kashmir area, which is in any case, along with Gandhara, known for its efficient horses even in the Vedic time. Even Shalya, Madri's brother is one of the best known charioteers and is a well-known 'horse-whisperer'.
Interestingly, contrary to all the men who were 'afraid' of her, Savitri chooses Satyavana primarily because of his qualities which were noted as shy, polite and gentle. He seemed to be the yin to her yang- a person who would quietly support her more forceful personality.
It is honestly pitiful, that her rather wholesome story is disfigured into a tale promoting 'paativratya'- a woman's loveless 'duty' to her husband, negating the entirety of her love and dedication to Satyavana (something that didn't need a literal converse law to keep her bound to him). This is very similar to what is done to Rama-Seeta, limiting their story to 'duty' and only duty, and not the true love that they actually shared.

(In a universe where Orphydice gets a good ending)
Savitri: So how'd you get your wife back?
Orpheus: Went to the deepest depths of the Underworld and used my musical skills to please the Chthonic Gods. What about you?
Savitri: Debated with Yamraj and won-
FR THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN BESTIES
Orpheus would talk about his struggles and Savitri is just ✨🗿dEbAtE🗿✨ maybe she'd even teach him to debate lol... And he'd teach her to play the flute
Meanwhile Satyavan and Eurydice are like “I love my wife/husband :3”

Soul Nature, I belong to life, I am from the Earth, atom and molecule and stardust.
I do not dream of beyonds, my destiny is to exist and return to exist in infinite natural forms with each dissolution of my body on Earth, with each reabsorption of my matter by Life, with each recycling of my mind, in the infinite and cyclical intelligence of this Natural existence.
Decadents fantasize about paradises, weakened by resentment at the harshness of this nervous soil, fearful of the Will of Power of this implacable Mother.
As for me, just person! Desiring animal... libido, enjoyment of the world. Storm that tears apart your safe home, earthquake that weakens your inconsistent certainties, tidal wave that drowns your salvation. Tell me, what sin do you want to get away with?
I eat you with my instincts. I, also, am prey: devour, chew, swallow. Become me. You are the World, child, the World that eats the World. Become you!
Becomes this hunger and spit out of your mouth the fear of being unable to control anything. Run, sing, shout, roar and rub the majesty of Life in the faces of the decadent saints, in a circular dance, adorned with garlands of brilliant skulls, stripped of the thin skin that reveals the whereabouts of everything, the Eternal Return. Remember your death and love your destiny.
Become Life.

Vat Savitri Represents the Theme and Notion of Environment Day
At first glance, Vat Savitri and World Environment Day might seem like rituals from entirely different worlds—one steeped in religious tradition, the other driven by global ecological concern. But look deeper, and you'll find a profound philosophical overlap between the two. Celebrated every year in northern India, especially in Bihar, Vat Savitri is more than just a Hindu festival—it's an ancient environmental ode that predates the modern green movement by millennia.

With the La Belle et La Bete double feature still languishing and dying of loneliness due to scheduling issues, we've decided to instead celebrate Valentine's Day with a discussion of which of our favorite relationships within fairytales, myths, and classic literature has stood the test of time, and River's gonna rank them! Who will win? The socialite and the bootlegger? The original catgirl and her immortal beloved (that are technically only public domain in Canada)? The lesbian vampire and her "victim"? The badass ladies of myth who defied Death itself to save their husbands? The princess and young man who need one very good boy's help to save them? The couple with an ending so tragic they spawned the Mid Autumn Festival? The pairing the Goddess of Love tried to tear apart to the point where even Zeus says she's gone too far? The ultimate childhood rivals to lovers? And WHY are there so many cats and dogs in this episode?? Find out on this episode of IER TLDR! Also there might be a sneak peek to a somewhat belated Retelling the News segment at the end, who knows...

#savitri you clever little punk I love you
(Yamraj had already granted two of Savitri's wishes as a reward for her dedication, apart from his condition to not grant Satyavaan's revival as her wish. Tired of her still following him, he turns to her.)
Yamraj: Hey would you stop doing that?
Savitri: Doing what?
Yamraj: Following me?
Savitri: You think I will?
Yamraj: .....Touche. Look... I know this is hard for you but I can't possibly return your husband's life.
Savitri: Oh that's okay I'll just follow you to the Afterlife then.
Yamraj: (sighs) Fine. One more wish. Last one. And then you leave me alone. Shoot.
Savitri: You know they were wrong about you being a prat. You're actually pretty generous.
Yamraj: Wait what-
Savitri: So here's my third wish...
Yamraj: Wait who were wrong about-
Savitri: ...I want to bear a hundred children with my husband.
Yamraj: Tathastu. Now get off my back. (Turns around to keep walking but then halts.)
Savitri: (smirks)
Yamraj:
Yamraj: Shit.

drabble; you only know the identity of your soulmate when they are nearing death, but Varadha knows it when he is 10
Varadha has heard of the myth, the belief, the rule, as many people called it. Khansaaris are born with soulmates, but fate is cruel to us, the string is only visible when your soulmate is going to breathe their last.
It was cruel indeed, but oddly merciful. Sometimes there is pain when your soulmate was your loved one, a lover, or a spouse but there are times, when they are only strangers you mourn.
But, Varadha--he has never been lucky when it came to fate. You only know the identity of your soulmate when they are about to die, but Varadha knew it when he was 10.
It happens too quick, one moment his best friend, Deva is next to him, and the next moment he is storming off into the arena to challenge a wrestler thrice his size. Varadha hears his own voice amidst the crowd, screaming and beggind Deva to listen, but by the time when he reaches the arena, there is a crowd, and Deva lies on the the floor.
Bloodied and unconcious, the fool had touched a live wire.
Varadha had never been that scared in his life ever, not even when his mother was gravely ill, but this was a fear he couldn't even comprehend, he tires to shake him, wake him up, and the moment he looks down at his own fingers, he realizes.
A string.
A string that connected his finger to Deva's.
The soulmate string.
And, there's tears in his eyes. The string is only visible when your soulmate is at the doorstep of death, but Varadha refused to believe it, even if Deva was at death's doorstep, he would bring him back, if Savitri could bring Satyavan back, he would do it too, the gods would allow him, they are merciful.
He hits Deva's chest, with prayers in his head, and a few seconds later, Deva wakes up with a jerk gasping for air.
"Did he.. get up", the fool asked him, and Varadha looked ahead to find the wrestler on the ground unable to get up.
Varadha felt angry, at himself, at Deva, is this why they called it a curse?
Not only to know who your soulmate was, but also to seem them almost die? and almost being the reason for it?
Idiot, fool, you stupid-
He hugs Deva, when the latter gets up. There is blood on his arms and there is a scar than runs from his ears, and the blood is Varadha's hands too--Deva's blood.
When Rudra comes to them, Deva demands the nose ring back, and amidst the spectating audience, he puts the nose ring back on Varadha, now drenched in his blood.
If this is what a curse was, it wasn't really a curse, it was a blessing, to be Deva's soulmate was a honor, a boon.
He watches Deva mouth agape, but he doesn't say anything that day, and only stares the string, now visible on his finger.
.
He wishes he had said something day, but then he realizes it was the best he didn't.
The jeep with Deva and amma leaves before him, as stood watching, heart now cold, and hands shaking.
If he was late even by minutes, dreadful things would have happened, and he realized, this was truly Khansaar's curse. His brother was the death that loomed over Deva at first, and now it his father, Varadha's presence had only harmed Deva, and even then this fool promised to return for him.
But he shouldn't, Varadha thought.
In this life, Varadha would never let Deva know he is his soulmate, and he wouldn't call him back, that was the only way to keep him safe.

Oh hey there @helpallthenamesaretaken!! :-D Yes yes, I do know the story of Savitri and Satyavan, bUT I STILL READ YOUR ENTIRE POSTS DW!! I remember hearing it for the first time and IMMEDIATELY thinking about orpheus and eurydice! Absolutely loved the way you told the story and its always a joy to see people discover and appreciate these ancient tales! Savitri just...frikkin' following the LITERAL GOD OF DEATH doggedly going "Give. Me. My. Husband." Talk about determination!
And I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Yamraj. Fun fact, I have always pronounced his name as Jomraj (the 'o' sound as in the word 'long') since I'm a Bengali speaker. So yeah, he's an ancient all-powerful deity who makes you quake in your boots (do not even try counting the number of local idioms that use 'Jom' as synonymous with 'ultimate dread being') but he also appreciates a mortal's willpower. Jomraj in mythology has never been an unreasonable character. In fact, he's not just the god of death, he's ALSO the god of justice. Another of his names is 'Dharmaraj', meaning 'king of righteousness'. He always rewards truthfulness, strength of character and most importantly, loyalty (famously taking the form a dog in one myth)!!
So it's no surprise he'd eventually relent to the clever Savitri's pursuit hehe :-D
Anyway, I'm sorry for going on a tangent about Jomraj/Yamraj, so I'll end my reblog by saying that Narada was ABSOLUTELY munching popcorn while watching all this go down (I'm surprised Savitri didn't facepalm and slam the door in his face when he showed up, considering his reputation lol)
I'm bored, does anyone wanna hear about one of my fav myths?
#if ya want to talk about/swap stories from more hindu mythology i'm always here! :-D#it was such a joy to read your thoughts on this story and how love as a concept is portrayed#in orpheus-eurydice and savitri-satyavan repsectively#i never thought about it like that!#hindu mythology#hindu gods
