Guys Iām gonna be real for a minute and ask about your LOTR / Silmarillion OCs because I NEED to know that other people have them and itās not just me
Iāll tell you a little about my boy below:
šøļø Heās an absolute brick shithouse of an elf and used to be a Marchwarden.
šøļø Heās Mairon/Sauronās advisor and general.
šøļø He is extremely protective of Mairon/Sauron. He hisses when Melkor/Morgoth is mentioned and would probably bark like a rabid dog at Celebrimbor. The werewolves like him.
šøļø Outsiders and non-elves would refer to him by his āfather-nameā: Seregluin (āBlue Bloodedā - like a spider because he weaves intricate battle plans and can be relied upon to catch any āfliesā in Maironās midst).
šøļø elves who know him would refer to him by his sort of EspessĆ« (honorific): OssecĆ”no (Quenya) or Gossandir (Sindarin) - meaning āTerrifying Commanderā (lmao heās the scary shouter. The screaming scarer.)
šøļø Only one person is allowed to refer to him with his āmother-nameā (an intimate name that is reserved for very close friends, and at this point you can probably guess who š): Gwathragur (Veiled Heart)
šøļø He would probably try to fistfight Melkor
šøļø He keeps a journal that is basically the fancy elven version of Regina Georgeās burn book, and all itās missing are pages with āGwathragur x Maironā in a little heart, scrawled in blood
šøļø before Melkor gets murked heās literally like āmairon, what the fuck- why is this big ass elf growling at meā. Seregluin gets in the way of Melkor (āiām gonna kill that fucking elfā) trying to bang Mairon (āDonāt antagonise himā)
šøļø literally Mairon/Sauron/Annatar being anywhere with Seregluin is like the āNOT FRIENDLY! NOT FRIENDLY!ā audio when other elves attempt to approach them (Annatarās holding him back by the scruff of his neck)
šøļø He never touches Mairon, but is near enough always in his personal space, like a shadow.
#silmarillion#silmarillion oc#lotr mairon#mairon#melkor#lotr oc#Seregluin is the ultimate angbang cockblock

Thanks @aipilosse for the tag! My AO3 account (this one at least) is a bit less curated than most. Iāve been using it since the age of 16 and have gone through the requisite teenage interests and then some so some of these answer will be a blast from the past.
How many works do you have on AO3?Ā
75
Whatās your total AO3 word count?
Just over 500k
How many fandoms have you written for and what a they?
According to the drop down menu, 27! A lot of them are overlaps but Iāve still covered a lot of ground over the years. Niche YA, childrenās movies, non-niche bestselling YA, Star Wars, anime. A few things Iām still interested in, a few Iām not. Sometimes I get a little embarrassed that thereās a paper trail of all my old fascinations but it is nice to have an archeological record of the last few years.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
For It Shines Bright and Never Changes, a 90k Kubo and the Two Strings AU from 2016-2018. My longest and most popular story. Iām actually proud of the planning that went into it.
Aftermath of an Announcement, a frankly kind of shoddily written Steven Universe fic that I remember writing at midnight on the couch outside my bedroom in England. Inexplicably recommended on TvTropes, which might explain the ridiculously disproportionate attention it got?
Regina, a decent little SvTFoE story that got some very good abandoned artwork. Thoroughly disproven bu the rest of the show, I think? I never finished watching it.
The Most Valuable Resource. Probably what my Silm friends know me from! Sauron and baby Celebrimbor in Angband at the very beginning of the first age. I fell in love with writing Sauron in this, heās a rather delightful awful.
Obsidian Sister, more cartoons, more sibling relationship drama, lots of hopeful worldbuilding for something that I kind of lost interest in. A good read on review though.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Yes! I love comments and getting replies to them so I always try to respond. My only regret is that it can sometimes take me too long to get people their responses. @everyone I am sorry!
Whatās the fic youāve written with the angstiest ending?
Probably my most recent one? I do tend to lean towards canon compliant vignettes when Iām bored and those can be bittersweet at best but not outright tragic. In most stories thereās a seed of hope, however deeply buried it is.
Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one youāve written?
No crossovers that I can recall. Keep in mind that Iāve forgotten a good portion of that 75 fic backlog.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
A few times but it was mostly confusing? I simply didnāt know what to do with it. Itās like being handed a dead lizard by a cat, yes, youāre very proud of this but Iām not sure where itās supposed to go.
I did once spend several paragraphs defending Elwing in the comments of a story Iād written about Elwing.
Do you write smut? if so what kind?
Not attached to this fake internet identity I donāt.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yes, one of them showed up on Wattpad once? I only found out because I was googling a nice fic rec someone wrote for the same story. In the end I didnāt do anything about it. Maybe my entire oeuvre is on Wattpad but I doubt it because I stopped writing Avengers fanfic a very long time ago.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Several of my Silm fics have been translated into Russian. Itās a privilege every time and I love going and seeing the final result!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. Used to do a bit of silly RP when I was younger but itās not quite the same.
Whatās your all time favorite ship?
Hmm, I like Silvergifting quite a lot but I have a weak spot for trios. They feel more harmonic. EonwĆ«/Elwing/EƤrendil is probably my favorite Silm ship, for example, though Iāve only written the one story for them. If weāre talking favorite of all time then I suppose weād have to go back to the basics. Nancy Drew/Bess/George.
Whatās a WIP that you want to finish but donāt think you ever will?
Often by the time I exert the energy to put something down on paper Iām already pretty committed to finishing it? A lot of my drafting goes on in my head so I only have a few WIPs in type from the past year and only one that I think I can discard as abandoned. Itās a Micheal and Sasha Magnus Archives Spirally self delusion and dreams story.
What are your writing strengths?
Decent worldbuilding and turn of phrase? I know I can make a sentence hit, which is good. And I am quite proud of some of my backstory work and research, including some hard scrabble conlang despite my absolute lack of a linguistics background
What are your writing weaknesses?
Too bogged down by melodrama, too many runon sentences, poor grammatical skills. Also I struggle a lot with giving characters distinct speaking voices; they all end up sounding like me which is no good. Iād like to be better at descriptions as well.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I swap my standards around depending on the feeling of the story and the concepts Iām trying to convey to the reader. FĆ«a might work for a short specialist one-shot about Gondorian scholars discussing elven concepts but then in a story from Celebrimborās perspective Iād use the more generic āsoulā. Formality, familiarity, ease of access to lay Tolkien readers, the perspective of the characters and what their ānative tongueā is keeping in mind that most of the Silm+ is designed as a translation. There are lots of factors. Same goes for a story with terms in Chinese or another extant language.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
On this account? A book about teens and magic. Online? The 39 Clues, a co-written boook series for middle grade children. Ever as a human being? It depends on if you count when I was very small and would lead my sisters in games where I was Aragorn niece and we were fighting at the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
Whatās your favorite fic youāve written?
Iām fond of The Thousand Stories, for all that itās experimental and indulgent. It was a chance to really explore stories about stories and what else is fan fiction for?
It looks like just about everyone else has been hit so @ameliarating and @feanorianethicsdepartment do feel welcome to take a swing if youāre so inclined.

On Writing: 10 Villain Archetypes
Iām going to talk more about villains in the future ā I could probably talk about them forever. This post just briefly looks at some common villain archetypes. If youāre struggling with the antagonistic side of your story, figuring out what type of villain/antagonist you have or want to have can help. Of course, stories can have multiple villains of multiple archetypes, and characters can overlap slightly into one or more archetype. These are just a couple of examples.
1. The Cartoon Villain
Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty
Also known as the moustache twirler. Revisit any pre-90s Disney film and youāll find this villain. These villains arenāt necessarily badly written; theyāre perfect in comedy and childrenās media.Ā But this is where they should stay. If youāre writing something more mature and complex, this villain can be tricky to work with. They usually have a weak motivation for being evil, or are simply evil for evilās sake. I mean...Maleficent sentenced a baby to death because she wasnāt invited to a birthday party.Ā
Other examples include Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmations and the Wicked Queen from Snow White
2. The Ancient Evil
Sauron from The Lord of the Rings
This evil has been around for a long time, and now itās awake again. The return of this evil is feared by many. They often symbolise evil itself, or something else with inherently evil connotations (take the temptation of the Ring, for example). This villain isnāt always always a super compelling character, but are a strong villain in presence and in threat. We donāt learn much about Sauron as a character in the LOTR trilogy, but itās well-established that heās still a force to be reckoned with.
Other examples include Dormammu from Doctor Strange and Cthulu from H.P. Lovecraftās short stories
3. The Beast
The great white shark from Jaws
Sometimes similar to the ancient evil, but not always as sentient and is openly referred to as not being more sentient than an animal. This can be a bit of a grey area though; Smaug is more intelligent than the average animal, but could still be classed as a beast.
Other examples include Ganon from The Legend of Zelda, Godzilla and the Basilisk from The Chamber of Secrets
4. The Dark Lord/Dictator
Voldemort and his followers from Harry PotterĀ
They donāt necessarily want to destroy the world, but they do want to own it. Their ideology is superior, and they either want to maintain the status quo and keep it under their control, or gain control of a society they deem beneath them. These guys are powerful and unpleasant, and often the final boss of the story while their henchmen are powerful secondary villains.
Other examples include President Snow from The Hunger GamesĀ and Cersei and Joffrey Lannister from Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire
5. The Mastermind
The Joker from The Dark Knight, and also other Batman things
While this villain can have physical strength and power, their advantage lies more in wits and intelligence. They always have a plan, and theyāre always thinking ahead. A common trope when dealing with this archetype is also to depict them as insane. Being super smart but also evil = insanity, apparently. This can be done well, though (see any version of the Joker that isnāt J**** L***). Itās popular for this villain to appear in stories with an intelligent protagonist, and so it turns into a battle of wits more than just punching each other.
Other examples include James Moriarty Sherlock Holmes andĀ Loki fromĀ ThorĀ
6. The Bully
Regina George from Mean Girls
Bullies usually work best in smaller, more intimate settings. They often fall under the dictator category as well, though obviously less violent. Often, this character falls more under antagonist than villain; calling themĀ āevilā might be overstepping the mark a little. This depends on the character, of course. Theyāre not pleasant to deal with, but fit more into an everyday setting than an epic battle of life and death.
Other examples include Dudley Dursley from Harry Potter and Ms Trunchbull from Matilda
(Sidenote: googling examples of bullies gave me the barracuda from Finding Nemo, but, um...I feel like eating someoneās wife and children is a step above bullying so keep that in mind I guess)
7. The Corrupted Hero
Bucky Barnes from Captain America: The Winter Soldier
This character was good once, but something happened to them. An injustice was inflicted on them and warped them into something terrible, convincing them the only way forward was through violent acts. They were overtaken by temptation and lost their sense of morality. They were turned into a villain against their will through magic or manipulation. Having a character like this is a useful way to play with the topics of redemption and forgiveness, and to examine how far someone has to go before theyāve fully become a villain.
Other examples include Jack from The Shining and Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars
8. The Redeemed Villain
Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender
Some villains act the way they doĀ because theyāve been manipulated, or fed false information abut the cause theyāre fighting for. Maybe itās possible for them to learn and improve from their mistakes if the hero gives them a chance. This wonāt work with every villain; some people are beyond redemption. People are often too quick to demand redemption for (handsome white male) villains whoāve done terrible, unforgivable things because reasons. Even for these characters, redemption can be possible. But it should be thematically relevant and not just for redemptionās sake.
Other examples include Nebula from Guardians of the Galaxy andĀ the Terminator from Terminator 2
9. Someoneās Hero, Someoneās Villain
Erik Killmonger from Black Panther
This is the villain with a more understandable motivation, you could say. To someone else, this person speaks true of their ideals and the injustices they face. This person is fighting for them. The villainās cause isnāt necessarily something the main hero disagrees with, or something inherently evil. Itās the methods that are the problem. The ideologies of this villain force the hero to question their own beliefs and examine themselves critically. Their antagonist teaches them something new.
Other examples include Magneto from X-Men andĀ Amon from Avatar: The Legend of Korra
10. The Surprise Villain
Hans from Frozen
Now so popular in animated films that itās no longer a surprise, this villain is portrayed as being a good guy at the beginning. This can be effective if the character is given enough time as a good guy to really make an impact when they switch sides, especially if they have a strong relationship with the hero. A common mistake with this villain is when they go through a complete character shift after their big reveal. Yes, parts of them have been kept secret, but they should still be believable as the same person. Sometimes itās obvious to the reader who the surprise villain is; sometimes thatās intentional. But the hero has to discover this throughout the course of the story.
Other examples include Bellwether from Zootopia andĀ Rose from Get Out
(sidenote: this can work in reverse where the hero has been led to believe a certain character is the villain, but the twist is that theyāre wrong. See Snape from The Philosopherās Stone and the Mandarin from Iron Man 3.)
