Vet Costs in Norway
Tumblr media
If you’ve just gotten your furbaby, the next thing you’ll want to do is take him or her to the vet for a routine checkup, as well as making sure that they are updated with their vaccinations. For kittens (especially outdoor ones), it’s crucial to get the combination shot, which I believe (check with your vet) protects against feline flu, chlamydia, and another thing that I can’t remember off the top of my head. At the same time, if your kitten hadn’t been dewormed yet by the time you get it, consult a vet for the proper medication. In most cases, even in door kittens will have worms in his stomach because it gets transmitted from the mother. You can check this link that I found for a more thorough explanation: http://www.petful.com/pet-health/how-do-i-know-if-my-cat-has-worms/. This can become a serious issue, such as lack of appetite, diarrhea, or lack of energy among other things which can really hinder your kitten’s growing development. The one that I used is Profender, a topical medication that you apply on the neck of your cat. All medications in Norway must be prescribed by the vet, so there’s usually a prescription fee along with the fee of the actual medication.
Secondly, if you want to get your cat spayed or neutered, the recommended age is between 5-6 months. I thought this was pretty late for kittens, since they usually get neutered as young as two or three months in the US, and I know this from first hand experience. However, vets here believe that the anesthesia used may be harmful to the kitten’s body, which is why they want to wait until they are more developed. This is quite true because vets usually don’t want to put senior cats under since there’s the chance that they might not wake up. At the same time, many clinics have “package deal,” where if you get your cat vaccinated, sterilized, and microchipped, you can spend less than doing the three things individually. Here’s a link to prices offered in AniCura, a chain vet clinic in Norway, also the one that I go to. And no, they are not paying me for any type of advertisement. This is just for reference in case you are curious about the prices.( http://www.anicura.no/dyreklinikk-grimstad/om-oss/priser/ ) The list is written in Norwegian and I can translate a few items that may be of interest to you:
(The prices are in Norwegian kroner, please refer to your country’s own currency )
KonsultasjonFra kr. 676,- (consultation) Vaksine kattFra kr. 602,- (vaccination for cat) Vaksine hundFra kr. 617,- (vaccination for dog) MikrochipKr 958,- (Microchip) Kastrasjon hannkattKr 938,- (neutering for cat) *Kastrasjon hannkatt, vaksine og mikrochipKr 1761,- (neuter, vaccination and microchip- this is the package deal I was talking about) Sterilisering av hunnkattKr 1695,- (spaying) Sterilisering av hunnkatt, mikrochip, vaksine, halskrage og etterkontroll.Kr 2517,- (spaying, vaccination and microchip)
In case you are wondering how much it costs to neuter/spay a dog, the answer is you usually can’t. Norway does not allow owners to neuter or spay a healthy dog without medical reasons. But the good news is that I don’t think there is a dog overpopulation problem here in Norway.
At the same time, DECLAWING IS ILLEGAL here as with many European countries. I still can’t believe that US hasn’t banned this barbaric act all together. I recently watched a really informative documentary on the cruelty of declawing called, “The Paws Project.” Here’s the link: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paIfc7Qd2Yc&feature=share)
I highly recommend you to watch it if you or someone you know is considering declawing your cat. Not only are you amputating a part of the cat’s distal phalanges, or end bones, you are also preventing them from living a normal life for the rest of his or her life. The cat will develop psychological problems and start using their teeth more, which can be even worse than just scratches. If you are someone who loves cats but can’t afford the medical cost or act responsibly, please do not have one. A lot of people adopt a kitten at the spur of the moment because they are cute, then either give them away, throw them out, or return back to the shelter once they are older. So please think about all the costs and consequences before getting any furry friends. They will be around you for the next 15 to 20 years, and needs to be loved and cared for each day.
This post is a bit long but I hope it’s informative. A domesticated animal is way more than just a pet, so please treat each one of your furbabies like the way you treat a family member. Make sure they are not only living, but also living healthily, happily, and safely. :)

I am very against declawing and have expressed that in great length. A great alternative( and non invasive & humane way) is Soft Paws. They are a rubber nail cap that you put on with pet friendly adhesive. You can buy them at most animal care stores, like Petsmart, and even online. They come in such cute colors and even glitter ones! There is NEVER a reason to declaw and with Soft Paws, you can not worry about their nail marks and your animal companion will be happy they have their fingers in tact. There are also other great alternatives like no scratch deterrent spray and sticky tape ( I use that as a training method to deter Rosie from scratching wood panels). Most importantly, make sure they have items JUST for the purpose of scratching and using their claws on, like scratching posts or cardboard.

We are currently seeing a lot of debate about declawing here in Quebec. Many are open to education and learning the alternatives. However, there are still many vets who perform the procedure without giving their clients the honest facts beforehand. It is up to us to change this. It is the job of a veterinarian to protect the wellbeing of the animals they treat. It is their job to tell us as the client what the side effects are to a procedure like declawing. Telling clients that it is not painful and not harmful to the cat is false information. Declawing is illegal in many countries around the world, and for good reason. Declawing is a mutilation. It is a series of bone amputations. Declawing is more accurately described by the term de-knuckling and is not merely the removal of the claws, as the term “declawing” implies. In humans, fingernails grow from the skin, but in animals that hunt prey, the claws grow from the bone; therefore, the last bone is amputated so the claw cannot re-grow. Also, the tendons, nerves, and ligaments that enable normal function and movement of the paw are severed. An analogous procedure applied to humans would be cutting off each finger at the last joint. Declawing provides no physical or psychological benefits whatsoever for the cat. The benefits are solely for the owner. Giving the excuse that “my cat would not use the scratching post” is lame. It is up to us as the owners and caretakers to help educate our cats to use the tools we provide. All the alternatives to declawing are proven to work if proper time and care is taken on our parts. Declawing a cat is a lazy and expensive way out. Your cat, like your dog or hamster, bird, fish or turtle is part of your family. Respect them and love them. They are God’s creatures and were put on this earth as they are. Learn to live with them rather than feel the need to change them for your own benefit. Let us use our knowledge to help educate those who are lacking. Hello, I'm a friendly fan of your blog and I see often how you say declawing is bad for your cat, but, why is that? I personally have a cat who was declawed but I have noticed no side effects, or he may be suffering something that I haven't seen?
Declawing is a pretty hefty operation for a cat. It actually involves the amputation of the first bone in a cat’s paw right down to the joint. A cat’s claws are part of their skeletal structure. When a cat is declawed, the nerves and tendons are also severed (in a human the equivalent would be taking a cigar cutter and cutting off the tops of our fingers to the first knuckle). Doing this can lead to many complications. Some cats will not show them right away, others may. Generally, it is a deterioration that takes place over time.
What are the potential complications of declawing?
1) Pain. While the immediate post-surgical pain that the cats suffer is obviously severe, it is hard to know how much chronic pain and suffering declawing causes. Cats typically conceal pain or illness until it becomes unbearable. Studies done by The Paw Project show that declawed cats display an average of 5 of 18 signs of pain and abnormal behaviours after a declaw. Cats stop grooming when they are in pain or sick. 46% of declawed cats in studied displayed a decrease in normal hygiene and grooming behavior.
2) Post-surgical complications. Lameness, abscesses, and regrowth of the claw can occur after surgery. Studies show that a shocking 66% complication rate of left over P3 fragments in a cat’s paws. P3 fragments can cause painful nail regrowth under the skin up to 15 years after surgery. Smaller P3 fragments are analogous to a “pebble in the shoe” that the cat must walk on every day. To better understand what a P3 fragment is, think about when you file your own nails. When you file your nail, dust from the nail falls. We are lucky because this happens outside of any growing skin. When a cat is declawed, the bone is severed from deep inside the paws. So that dust, or particles of bone stay under the skin and can later regrow and cause infection and puss inside the paws.
3) Joint Stiffness. In declawed (and tenectomized) cats, the tendons that control the toe joints retract after the surgery, and over time these joints become essentially “frozen.” The toes can no longer be extended, but remain fully contracted for the lifetime of the cat. The fact that most cats continue to “scratch” after they are declawed is often said to “prove” that the cat does not “miss” its claws. However, this is as easily explained as the cat’s desperate desire to stretch those stiff, contracted paw, leg, shoulder and spinal joints. Studies show that 38% of declawed cats display significant alterations in their posture and decreased ability to ambulate normally.
4) Arthritis. Declawed cats shift their body weight backward onto the large central pad of the frontfeet and off the toes. If this altered gait persists over time, it causes stress on the leg joints and spine, and can lead to damage and arthritic changes in multiple joints. Most declawed cats sufferfrom plantigrade stances and paw pad callouses from the redistribution of forces. In fact, studies show that over 80% of declawed cats displayed plantigrade stance OR a paw pad callous. (Our cat Besss has these problems along with P3 fragments).
5) Litterbox problems. Declawed cats have more litter box avoidance problems than clawed cats. If cat owners knew they could end up trading scratched furniture for urine-soaked carpeting, they might have second thoughts about declawing. Studies show that 15% of cats will develop litterbox avoidance behaviors after declawing. Sterile cystitis and FUS tend to be very common in declawed cats and present in 80% of surgery candidates most likely due to the overall stress that declawing causes to the cat.
6) Biting. Deprived of claws, a cat may turn to its only other line of defense—its teeth. Studies show that 36% of declawed cats in our study show outward aggression including biting without warning in non-threatening environments.
7) Death. Declawing that results in biting or litterbox avoidance may result in the cat being dumped at a shelter. Such behaviors make them unadoptable, and they will be euthanized. Many declawed cats acting out of pain are abandoned or exiled to a life outdoors because of these unwanted behaviors, even though declawed cats should not be allowed outside—their ability to defend themselves from predators, and to escape danger by climbing, is seriously impaired.
Places where declawing is ILLEGAL: England / Scotland / Wales / Italy / Austria / Switzerland / Norway / Sweden / Ireland / Denmark / Finland / Slovenia / Brazil / Australia / New Zealand / Serbia / Montenegro / Macedonia / Slovenia / France / Germany / Bosnia / Malta / Netherlands / Northern Ireland / Portugal / Belgium / Israel
