She catches Mutt’s eye, tilting her head towards the vocalists, and bites back a grin when the two of them join in.

And the funny thing is: this shouldn’t be so effortlessly easy. The four of them have never played together before.

Voting her into the band, though, is the easiest decision that Stevie’s ever made.

I Can’t Stand the Rain(e)

Written for Schitt’s Creek Rare Fest 2022

David/Jake, Rated T, 5K

David could go to the store, but he’d already told Patrick he won’t be there today. The café is out, too, and so is just taking a walk around town, for the same reasons—he might run into Patrick, or Stevie, or, god forbid, Sebastien. None of his usual options are going to work today, but if he doesn’t do something to get out and distract himself, he’s pretty sure he’s going to lose his fucking mind and end up locking himself in his mother’s closet.

He closes his eyes, focusing on his breathing again, and feeling his skin prickle with nervous energy. He flips through the mental Rolodex of limited distractions available to him without money, reliable means of transportation, or an elaborate disguise… and only one option comes to mind.

After beating Sebastien at his own game, David visits another former lover—but gets more than the simple distraction he was looking for.

Fun fact! This went through several title changes before I settled on I Can't Stand the Rain(e) at the very last minute: Palate Cleanser (but I already have a title with "palate" in the name, which also mentions Jake, so I had to nix this one) Fresh Wood (it made me laugh, which didn't fit the tone) A Himbo's Healing Hands (again, if the tone were different...lol) Softwood (this was my pre-reader's winning suggestion as we were toying around with carpentry terms—softwood is extremely durable and insect-repellant, which we thought David would appreciate, but I wasn't totally sold and I couldn't help worrying it might be interpreted as a euphemism for *ahem* flaccidity!)

I had a really good conversation today with a fellow writer and friend about Stevie and David's friendship and how much I love Stevie. And then @jesuisici33 tagged me and that sparked me to rec Best Budds by @mallpretzles written for the recent SC RareFest.

I loved reading an AU version of Stevie's back-story and her relationship with the Motel over the years. There are some canon elements weaved into her story seamlessly. I loved how much she cared about it and how it played such a big part of who she was.

We will have catch-all prompts, for those who want to keep their ideas secret (instead of posting and claiming their own prompt) or for fanartists, vidders, podficcers, etc. who wants to create work for this fest that’s based off of an existing work. They will be posted after prompting closes so they are at the top.

Prompts featuring any non David/Patrick romantic relationship, whether they are canon or not-canon, or any non-romantic relationship, whether they are canon or non-canon, are welcome!

We ask that your work not be centered around the David/Patrick relationship. While it can be in the work as a background element—of course David or Patrick may talk to a friend or family member about their relationship!—we ask that your work be centered around their relationships with others.
