I do believe that the capture and torment of Celebrían, such that she was not killed but was so wounded in heart that she chose to Sail, was a precisely calculated move on the part of Sauron. The - successful! - goal was to depress the spirit of Elrond, and to a lesser extent Galadriel, such that they offered slightly but significantly less resistance to his long-term plans of conquest but did not pass the Finwëan Despair-Rage Threshold wherein they'd challenge him to single combat.
