I want to make a webcomic!
Now, I have the story, the characters and the ideas, but not the artistic capacity. I'm also still young enough that I want to continue developing this idea before I go anywhere with it.
So for now, until I'm ready to make it and have a team of artists to actually make it reality, I'm going to have this Tumblr profile so that I can talk about my ideas and share this concept with the world!
---
Concept:
In this world, Witches are relatively common-place, being around 1 in 1000 people. Witches have no defining traits other than pointy ears at first, but each witch has a food that is baked into their very soul, and when they eat that food for the first time, they unlock their latent magical abilities as their soul manifests as a staff that they can use for magic.
All the magic is food themed, and based around the individual witch's designated food (For instance, a spicy pepper witch could use pyrokinesis, while an ice cream witch has cryokinesis).
The webcomic would follow an Egg witch as he attends The School of Culinary and Mystic Arts (SCMA for short) and joins a small coven, learning magic, friendship, and a lot of trauma. I mean a LOT.
---
The comic would be heavily inspired by cartoons like The Owl House, Gravity Falls and Amphibia, as well as Anime such as BNA and Little Witch Academia. Though it would be more mature, with violence, death, and serious tones (Hence why I'm not aiming for being a cartoon!)
---
Feel free to send asks with any questions! May not answer things I consider spoiler-y, but I'm happy to at least try filling y'all in one some details!

Night at Your Museum
One of my favorite Smith Traditions is Night at Your Museum! Every February, the Smith College Museum of Art opens specially one Friday night for Smith students and their guests. Catering goes all out and lays out a beautiful spread of food, and everyone dresses up and poses in front of various pieces of art. There’s also always a special exhibition that opens around the same time. This year, the special exhibit was Black Refractions: Highlights from The Studio Museum in Harlem.

The Main Cast of the Food Witches:
Okay, so, at the School of Culinary and Mystic Arts, Students are placed into coven groups of five, with one mentor.
The coven that our story follows is comprised of:
Nova - The Main Character - Nova is an Egg Witch, and he uses a lot of summoning magic, creating constructs of eggs to use as shields, bomb, hatching magical transparent chick constructs, etc. Nova is pansexual, and he overall is a scatterbrained and sometimes bullheaded individual. He wants to find himself at SCMA, and will overtime learn who he truly is, and how to deal with the consequences it takes to get there.
Abigail "Abby" - Abby is a Tofu witch, and she uses her magic primarily to enhance or overpower others by absorbing their magic and redirecting/repurposing it. Abby is a lesbian, and despite how she has a support role in battles due to her magic, Abby is incredibly shy and needs to learn to work with others and let people into her life before she can achieve her full potential.
"Fritz" (Real name unknown) - Fritz is a Dragonfruit Witch, and he relies almost exclusively on one type of magic: Transforming into a giant dragonfruit dragon. Fritz is energetic, self-destructive, and naive at times due to being the youngest of the main coven, bordering on unstable at times.
Lyra - Lyra is a wheat witch, and uses her magic in a defensive way, using wheat and grain seeds to trap her foes while the rest of the team takes them down, but when things get serious, she can pull out her scythe. She's an asexual country bumpkin who has an Apple witch sister in another coven by the name of Sallie Mae. Lyra grew up along side Sallie and the two were practically joined at the hip. Now, Lyra needs to learn to be independent of her sister as her own person.
Amaros - Amaros is a grape witch whose magic is primarily focused on the alcohol side of things. He is the eldest of the coven members by a decent margin, and is constantly out partying or just getting drunk in the comfort of the coven dorm. This can increase his magical and combative abilities, but in day to day life is more bad than good. His arc will primarily focus on getting to know what has led him to being such a chronic drinker, and whether or not the rest of the coven is a good enough reason to try being better. Amaris is a transmasc somewhere on the queer spectrum, but he doesn't remember most of his nights on the town well enough to have a hardset sexuality.
Annabelle - Annabelle is a Honey Witch, and the mentor of the coven. Due to honey's near inability to spoil, Annabelle has been around for nearly two thousand years, though she spent a lot of that time sleeping. She awoke from her slumber and personally requested the headmaster of SCMA to allow her to be their teacher. She uses her healing, restoration and conjuration magic to assist her students while not fighting their battles for them.

Smith Museum of Art Gift Shop!
I’m always looking for fun new places to check out and experience on campus, and thanks to my summer job, I get paid partly to explore campus for the summer. Last Thursday afternoon, my coworker Minji and I took a trip to the Smith Museum of Art’s Gift Shop! The shop was having an outdoor sidewalk sale along with most shops/small businesses in downtown Northampton this past Thursday-Sunday (Sidewalk sales always happen the last weekend of July!). After poking around in their tent outside, we headed inside to spend some time in the regular shop as well, where we met the shop’s former manager as well as the new manager, Justin, who is excited about getting students more involved in the Museum shop and promoting both the shop and the Museum more through social media! Minji and I had a great chat with him and exchanged contact information!

(photo id: jewelry and postcards displayed on shelves at the Smith Museum of Art Gift Shop)
The shop has a lot of relatively inexpensive jewelry, postcards, and other trinkets in addition to their larger items, so Justin is hoping to get more to think of the shop when in need of gifts for family and friends, or even something for themselves. So, next time you’re in need of a last minute gift, you might not even need to leave campus!

On Thursday, there was a really cool event at the Smith College Museum of Art called Zodiac Kickback, to celebrate (?) the start of the new semester! Bringing in truly delicious pies from the Florence Pie Bar, cookies and other sweets, there was also tarot card and birth chart readings. I didn’t get to the event in time to get my birth chart read, but I still enjoyed the other activity--embroidery! I’ve actually never embroidered before, so I watched Naomi do hers first. Hers turned out quite well! We’re both Libras, so that made it easier after watching her embroider our shared star symbol. This event has made me even more excited for Night at Your Museum, coming up in late February!

Halloween!

As Halloween approaches this year, I thought I would reminisce on last year’s Halloween at Smith! ResLife sent out a list of houses that were going to be handing out candy on Halloween! I took it upon myself to go to every house that was participating to get as much candy as possible and also, I LOVE seeing the different houses on campus! My friends were all doing homework/didn’t want to come which meant that it was going to be a solo adventure. Here is what happened...
While my shaved head has lended itself to letting me be Eleven from Stranger Things for the past two Halloweens, I did not have the full costume at Smith so I had to improvise! I went with Orpheus from the musical Hadestown, which I had the pleasure of seeing in May 2019.

I started off my night by attending the Smith College Museum of Art’s Halloween Event. I got into a small group of people and off we went! We first looked at an interesting painting and made (often funny) one sentence horror stories about it!

Then we looked around at some other Halloween-ish paintings and took some fun photos, like this one!

After that, I went to all of the houses! I conquered my goal and got a massive pocketful of candy AND I got to see the many different ways houses celebrate Halloween!
I also got to stop by the President’s House where President McCartney was dressed as Sophia Smith and her husband, Bill, was giving out Smith-themed chocolate bars!

(I know I included this photo at the beginning, but it’s too good not to share again!)
That was my Halloween! The candy totally lasted me for the rest of the semester! It was super fun to explore the campus and all the different houses! Definitely going to miss wandering around this year!

Daily Migration in Green Mode
It's crazy that we are 6 weeks into the semester already. Before returning to campus, I was dismayed at the prospect of being trapped in solitary confinement on campus, but the freedom Green Mode brings and the lovely Northampton spring I didn't get to experience during my first year have been overall a delightful surprise. Exhilarated, I’ve been trying to spend as much time as possible outside my room. I am always on my way somewhere: to a dining hall, to an academic building, to the gym, to a friend’s house, etc. A migrating homo sapiens I have become indeed.

The list below answers the question: What are some of my blog-worthy destinations?
SCMA: Search for Identity
As one of the perks of Green Mode, Smith College Museum of Art is open to students and faculty in the testing protocol. Last Thursday two friends and I signed up to visit the lower level and first-floor galleries where Monet's La Cour d'Albane and Picasso's Table, Guitar and Bottle were on view. The quietness of the uncrowded museum allowed me to feel calm inside and be immersed in art.

A piece that struck me the most during the visit was Birth Certificate by María Magdalena Campos Pons, a Cuban-American artist. The giant woodcuts of fingerprints and palms of her art confused me at first, but the meaning became clear to me after I read the texts in the frames below the woodcuts: Even If My Hands Are Clenched By Mud My Finger Prints Are My Own Let Me Be Myself Let Me Be Alone. In my head I was picturing a giant (in the cold, sunless Jotunheim, far far away from Asgard), or a misfit, an outcast, who stumbles in the darkness, seeking a place where they belong, staunchly repudiating assimilation and invalidation. The caption helped me better understand the work: It represents the symbols of personal and national identity and how they are communicated to the world. The message resonated with me, since as a non-US passport holder, I am sensitive to the subtle ways where my identity is perceived differently in a country that isn’t always friendly to foreigners.

Sage: Sound of Music
Writing about the art museum provides a perfect segue into the next place I have in mind: Sage Hall, home to the music department. It is unofficially my second home that I visit almost everyday. There I take private lessons, practice the violin (and sometimes fall asleep on the piano. Shh!); before the pandemic, I also helped set up the stage for rehearsals every week as part of the concert crew. Sage the only building on campus that has a cool dome (the rooftop observatory of McConnell doesn't count). This semester, the practice rooms and the locker rooms are accessible to students, the only significant difference being that we need to sign up in advance to use the practice rooms. Isopropanol wipes, paper towels and hand sanitizers are placed in every practice room to keep the shared space clean. A typical practice room (pictured below, where my violin made a cameo appearance) has a grand piano, chair, and music stand.

Ford: Getting Hands Dirty
The third place I spent a significant amount of time in is Ford Hall, the home for the Picker Engineering Program. I had my first in-person lab of this school year two weeks ago in the organic chemistry laboratory on the second floor of Ford. My orgo professor also held in-person office hours in a classroom in Ford. It was nice to see the professor and classmates in 3D.

It is worth mentioning that a few changes had been made to my previous schedule: I dropped the 4-credit Classical Mythology and took a 2-credit special studies instead to make my workload more manageable. So now I go to lab with my special studies partner/ lab buddy about twice per week. I actually like working with chemicals while masked (once I found a way to make the goggles less foggy). It offers an extra layer of protection. The special studies focuses on the synthesis and characterization of different types of nylon. Ultimately, we’d like to design a lab for polymer chemistry students where they can repeat our experiment during two lab periods. (I might write a blog about this in greater detail.) Although I am only a first-semester organic chemistry student, the two professors I am doing the special studies with and the senior chemistry major working on the same project are super friendly and patient as they explain to me the science of polymers.
