#1305 How are sellotape (Scotch tape), duct tape, stick glue, wood glue, and superglue different?

How are sellotape (Scotch tape), duct tape, stick glue, wood glue, and superglue different? All the types of glue have different chemical components and they are different in the way that they dry. They also stick or don’t stick to different things. Adhesive tape is called sellotape in the UK and Scotch tape in the US and Canada. Both are brand names and I will probably use the words interchangeably. The glue on sellotape is called pressure-sensitive adhesive. It was invented by a man called Richard Drew, who was working for 3M. A lot of adhesives have been invented by people working for 3M, postits being one of them. He actually came up with masking tape before he invented Scotch tape. He was trying to make an adhesive tape that could be used on the surface of cars when they were being painted, and then peeled off with no damage. After he had masking tape down, he invented a clear tape that he called Scotch tape. The adhesive on the tape is called pressure-sensitive adhesive because it sticks using a physical reaction and not a chemical one, like other glues. The adhesive contains silicone, acrylic, rubber, and a resin to make it tacky. When you put the tape on to another surface, there are two processes that make the tape stick. The first is called wetting. The surface molecules of the tape are very loose and when the tape comes into contact with a surface, the molecules enter that material and sink below the surface, creating a bond. The second thing is something called Van der Waal’s forces. You might remember this. We looked at it when we were finding out how lizards can climb walls. Van der Waal’s forces are a weak attraction between two molecules, holding them together, but not strongly enough that the bond can’t be broken. Duct tape sticks in the same way as sellotape, but its bond is much stronger. It uses more rubber than sellotape, which gives it a stronger and longer lasting bond. The adhesive layer is thicker than sellotape as well. Another feature duct tape has is a layer of cotton (or polyester these days) at the back of the adhesive. This gives the tape a lot more strength than sellotape and helps it keep its shape and bond. Glue sticks come in a tube and you can extend them by twisting the base, similar to a lipstick. They are used for sticking paper, and general craft. They are not very strong adhesives. Glue sticks are made of synthetic water soluble resins, such as polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and fatty acid sodium salt, which is a compound formed when fatty acids are reacted with sodium. Fatty acid sodium salts are used in soap and they give both soaps and glue sticks their shape. The resin is dissolved in water and when you use the glue, the water evaporates, leaving the resin. The glue bonds in two ways. First, there are the same Van der Waal’s forces that we had with basic sellotape. The second is a bond between the polymers. When the water evaporates, it leaves just the polymers in the resin and they start to lock together, getting twisted around the molecules in the thing they are sticking, forming a bond. This bond is not very strong and these kind of glues can be pulled apart fairly easily. There are many types of wood glues, but the most common, the white glue, is made of something called polyvinyl acetate (PVA). It has polymers that are dissolved in a liquid solvent to keep them apart and to keep the glue pourable. When you spread the glue on a surface, the solvent evaporates leaving the polymers. Wood glue can bond incredibly well because the polymers can sink between the fibers of the wood. When the solvent is gone, the polymers harden and form together in a mesh. This mesh goes into the surface of the wood and makes a bond that is harder than the actual wood itself. If you want to break two pieces of wood that have been glued together apart, you will break the wood more easily than you will break the glue. Superglue is different to the other glues. Stick glue and wood glue have a solvent that needs to evaporate before the glue can set. Superglue doesn’t need that. Superglue contains a chemical called cyanoacrylate. This chemical starts to polymerize when it comes into contact with water molecules. When there are water molecules, which there are, pretty much everywhere on Earth, including in the air, the cyanoacrylate starts to cure. The polymers in the glue rapidly attach to each other and form a very strong mesh. The glue gets into all of the microscopic pores on the surface of the object and this mesh of polymers sets, creating a bond that won’t break. The process creates heat, which is why your fingers feel warm if you super glue them together, which is something I do on a regular basis. And this is what I learned today. - #643 What makes things sticky? - #156 How does superglue work? - #647 How does a 3D printer work? - #1078 What are gallstones? - #1261 What are self-healing materials? I know things are scary and look bleak. Hope is gonna be difficult, but I think the worst thing we can do is forget to support each other through this. What ever bad situation you're in, youre gonna make it through, and you're gonna find people who love you and are so damn happy you're in their lives. I love you all so much.

i dont think ill ever be able to make comics for most of my ocs solely because 90% of the effort goes into universe logistics
i physically cannot bring myself to pull an "it's magic bitch im not explaining shit" for anything
#the other day it occured to me that the time jail for one of mine shouldn't be able to have a pulse go through it#to establish time again via repeated actions because that would be far to big of a loophole and#for now its patched up by the literary scotchtape of “the creator of the time jail established this loophole just in case”#but its still terrible for so many reasons#genuinely for that world the entirety of the writing is just lore and a basic sense of story#all of the. three major characters have code names but only one has a name#writing#except I CANT FUCKIGB WRITE#i think there isss one thats closer#but i have#like 3 character designs total#and half the names are temporary

One of the reasons I love Mansfield Park. This is the only JA novel whose ending feels this bittersweet to me. Henry Crawford realized her full worth before anyone else did, but he didn't have integrity, the foundation to be a good man. Fanny was growing to respect him and would have loved him within the year if he had stayed the course. She dodged a dumpster fire for the ages...but I bet their honeymoon would have been very educational 😜😉
The thing that drives me crazy about Henry Crawford is that he almost made it. He almost changed. A bit more restraint, a little more core morality, and his life could’ve been so different. Everything could’ve been so different.
#why didn't maria die of consumption#henry is terrible but Edmund has the sex appeal of scotchtape#oh well at least fanny is happy#i want to see a adaptation of MP done right for once

the more I actually read of Thus Spoke Zarathustra the more enamored I am with how thoroughly Ferris has gotten it and not gotten it at the same time.
Ferris Wheel let Nietzsche fly right over her head, then bounce back and hit her directly in his face and then let it roll away. "nihilism isn't real" truly the worst and maybe the best nietzschian analysis ever made.

I'm a baby goth who really wants to get better at makeup and more specifically eyeliner similar to what you do. Do you have any products or tips you reccomend for getting started? I try to look up advice online but it's overwhelming and it's kinda embarrassing to ask for advice irl.. ty in advance if you decide to answer this.
hi !! idk how good my advice will be but ill do my best to answer as well as i can !
as a heads up i freehand everything but i have seen people use the tape method to keep their liner/eyeshadow straight (which is just putting a piece of scotchtape on the side of ur eye where u plan to have a straight area of liner)
i found using water activated liner helped me a Lot when i started doing more graphic looks at the end of last year (since its water activated u can easily just wipe it off with a makeup wipe or wet tissue) but there is a difference in feel when applying it compared to using a liner pen (to me at least) ie the brush length makes it easier for me to do the smaller details as it gives me more control, but once i got a good feel for doing stuff like that it made using the pen easier. water activated is also much better if u plan on more colorful looks; liner pens do come in colors but they dont pop as well or as bright as the water liners.
as for making ur liner symmetrical… not sure how to give the best advice for that 🤔 the way i do it is ill line out one eye with the outline of what i want to do & try to match the other eye best i can. i have shakey hands but ive found planting my elbow on my desk table & my lining hand on my cheek really helps to stabilize myself so my lines come out straight. to straighten out my lines (like if i made one side to thick) ill just wipe a smidge of it with a wet cotton pad with water liners, but when i use a liner thats waterproof i use micellar water or a make up wipe to fix it.
as for my lids i use a mehron skin prep toner (its the only product ive found that works for my Very oily lids, but its definitely not for everyone… stings like SHIT if its in ur eye especially since i am… not supposed to use it for what i have been 😬. adding that bc if i do t use it sometimes the oil will denature the liner & smear it all over my lids lol. on top of that i put foundation & whatever eyeshadow i want on top of that when the foundation is dry enough it wont smear. putting liner over whatever u layered on ur lids is a commitment & a little hard to fix if u want to put the liner on in 1 go which is why i recommend practice & playing around !!
dont be scared about it not looking nice at that start, just start with something simple to get that feel for it so u can work up to what u want 👍
as for products, i got my water inks from bymelolops (latina owned, based in puerto rico !) i bought this liner brush (and a few water inks as well) from gavissi. my eyeshadow is mostly sugarpill (i only buy when its on sale, its a little pricey but worth it) but if ur on more of a budget colourpop has good options. as for liner pens, ive been using the last of my nyx liner, but am looking for a good alternative (loreal supports isr*el) so im unfortunately not much help here as im Also on the look out 😮💨
i definitely suggest getting some cheap stuff to play around with !! many places like sephora & ulta also sell small sample sizes of liners so u can get one of those to try out before u commit to something. a lot of what i started with years ago came from the dollar store bc that was all i could afford at the time lolll

To double onto this as someone from the south one thing i find useful for windows is to use tinfoil and scotchtape/duct tape. it is not something to be embarrassed about and it is something that does WONDERS at keeping the heat out. My suggestions are the following, tinfoil the windows. (double layer is preferred but not necessary) second then grab a blanket. preferably a white blanket as they tend to reflect heat better, but anything works and staple it around the window. Sunlight however little produces heat, the sky is great in many places and brings us rain. but in summer The sun is not your friend and is hiding razor blades in the candy! so cover your windows! fresh water and shade is great for pets but once the temperature gets too high it's best to bring the animals inside if you can, and do everything you can to help them cool off. also use the sheets to sleep, they are thin and amazing for being breathable. CONSUME. SODIUM. Your sweating your ass off, you need, sodium. dont care how you get it or what you eat. (dont drink salt water) just consume some sodium throughout the day while drinking water or gatorade! (more water then sodium but still you need sodium)
For all of the northerners that stood up for Texas during our freeze and said, "Don't make fun of them, they've never dealt with this before. Their infrastructure isn't made for snow and freezing."
This one is for you.
Where I live 108°F with 80% humidity with no wind is normal.
Pacific North West is dealing historic best waves 35-40°C or 95-105°F.
First of all. Don't make fun of them for bitching about the heat. Just like Texas isn't built for a freeze and our pipes burst, Pacific North West isn't built for heat and a lot of their homes don't have AC.
If you live somewhere with a high humidity like 80+ HUMIDITY IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. The "humidity makes it feel cooler" is a lie once it gets beyond a point.
If you live somewhere with a lower humidity, misters are nice to cool off outside.
Once you get over 90°F (32°C) a fan will not help you. It's just pushing around hot air. (I mean if you can't afford a small AC unit because they're expensive as hell, by all means a fan is better than nothing).
If you have pets, those portable AC units aren't safe. If your pets destroy the outtake thing, it'll leak CO2. Window units are safer.
Window AC units will let mosquitoes or other small bugs in. Sucks, but that's life.
Now is not the time to me modest. If you have to cover for religious reasons, by all means. If you don't, I've seen people wear short shorts and a swim top. It's not trashy if it keeps you from getting heat stroke.
If you do have to cover up for religious reasons, look for elephant pants or something similar. They're made with a breathable material.
Shade is better than no shade, but that shit it just diet sun after some point. Don't think shade will save you from heat stroke.
I know the "drink your water" is a fun meme now, but if you're sweating excessively you need electrolytes. Drink Gatorade, Powerade, or Pedialite PLEASE. I don't care if you're fucking sitting in one spot all day. That shit WILL save you from heat stroke.
Most importantly. RESEARCH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HEAT STROKE AND HEAT EXHAUSTION PLEASE!
If you're diabetic and can't drink Gatorade, mix water, fruit juice, and either lite salt or pink salt
If you can afford it, cover windows with thick curtains to insulate the house
If you have tile floors, lay on them with skin to tile contact. If you don't, laying your head on cool counters works too.
If the temperature where you're at is hotter than your body temperature, don't wear heat wicking clothing. Moisture wicking is safe though.
Check your medication labels. Many make you more susceptible to sun and heat
-Room temperature water will get into your body faster. This is something I learned doing marching band in high summer in Georgia, and it saved all of our asses. Sip it, don't gulp it, especially if you're getting into the red; same goes for whatever fluid you're drinking. And just in general drink during the day.
-If you are moving from an air conditioned space to an un-air conditioned space, if at all possible try to make the shift gradual. When my dad and I were working outside and in un-ac houses a few years ago, he'd turn the air down to low in the truck about ten-fifteen minutes before we got where we were going. This way your body doesn't go from low low temps to high temps. S'bad for you.
-If you can, keep your lights off during the day. Light bulbs may not generate a lot of heat, but the difference is noticeable when it gets hot enough. I literally only turn my bedroom light on in the evening when it gets too dark.
Don't be afraid to just like... pour water on yourself if you need to. The evaporation will cool you off.
Put your hand to the cement for 15 seconds. If you can't handle the heat, it'll burn your dog's paws. Don't let them walk on it.
Dogs with flat faces are more prone to heat stroke. Don't leave them out unsupervised.
Frozen fruit is delicious in water.
Wet/Cold hat/handkerchief on your head/neck will help you stay cool.
Pickle juice is great for electrolytes! You can even make pickle juice Popsicles!
Heat exhaustion is more, "drink water and get you cooled off." Heat stroke is more "Oh my god call 911."
Image Description provided by @loveize
[Image description: an infographic showing the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The graphic is labeled "Heat Dangers: First Warning." Signs of heat exhaustion: faint or dizzy, excessive sweating, cool, pale, clammy skin, rapid, weak pulse, muscle cramps. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat exhaustion, get to a cool, air-conditioned place, drink water if conscious, and take a cool shower or use cold compress. Signs of heat stroke: throbbing headache, no sweating, red, hot, dry skin, rapid, strong pulse, may lose consciousness. If you think you or someone else may be experiencing heat stroke, call 911. End description]
Be safe.

That's really bad security. A carjacker can get your finger prints off the handle of your door with a strip of scotchtape.
I like to throw security a curveball by using the tip of my penis for the "fingerprint" my car uses.
