I love the Outsiders fandom for its ability to make everything out of little to nothing.

Paul and Darry get one paragraph in the book about them being best friends who played football and had a falling out. Now (partly thanks to the musical) these two have an entire lore, ship, and trauma, as well as Paul being a developed character.

Curly is mentioned a couple times in the book, mostly because of stupid stuff he did with Ponyboy and where that landed him. In TWTTIN, he is the one actively beating up the “protagonist”. Yet papercut is one of the most loved ships.

Even with the Pony, Cherry, Mark, Curly, and Scout friend group. Cherry never meets Mark, Curly, or Scout. Scout is a character from the TV show who really only interacts with Pony. Mark and Curly are beating each other up for half of TWTTIN. Cherry and Pony have a complicated relationship after the events of the book. These five have formed one of the most iconic friend groups in the Outsiders fanfiction.

These are just a few examples of different things that are pretty much canon to me now. There are so many different takes on the characters and events, crossovers, and different time periods which helps keep this fandom alive.

They’re all happy right? Wrong.

1965 - Happy friend group

1967 - Pony can’t turn sixteen while Johnny’s still that age, kills himself by OD on Aspirin

1967 - Six months after his boyfriends death, Curly can’t take it anymore, stabs himself with switchblade and dies

1968 - Grieving over Ponyboy, Scout becomes similar to who Dally was, fights back in an argument with her parents and is killed accidentally (though no one really believes it was an accident)

1969 - Cherry’s parents take her out of Tulsa, she ends up married to someone she isn’t sure she loves

1970 - Mark ends up in prison, later escapes and is shot dead by the cops

They’re gone, they’re all gone. Cherry reads the newspaper to find out Mark’s dead. Breaks down, remembering the friend group that used to be everything to her. The last time she remembers feeling actually happy was with them, the day before Pony killed himself. Now all she does is take care of her husband and kids, (whom she named after her past friends, though her husband doesn’t know that.) and put on a fake smile day after day. Maybe one day they’ll all be together again.

I’m making this into a series, it’s under the # of they’re all happy right? Wrong.

Cherry's Design!

trying to keep the ball rolling here, i have a lot planned/have quite a bit written but i had a sudden urge to draw!!

a bit about her, for AU's sake:

she's the oldest of the five (no age specified, it's assumed she's a year or two older)

she's the only one with a somewhat working car. that curly breaks a lot because he's...curly...

she dresses a lot how she does in her canon universe, very formally all the time even if she's not doing anything that day.

she's the only one that doesn't share a room.

I like to think I’m the co-leader of the gang (Pony says otherwise) Not a huge fan of who’s in here (*cough* Jennings *cough*) but I’m doing it for Pony, plus I like to fight.

Angela

I’m not sure why I’m here, but as long as it gets me out of the house. I hate everyone in this gang except Scout, she seems cool. I’m Curly’s older sister, so I’m in charge! 😈

Mark

I’m here to keep the cops away (jk, or am I?) I like to play pool, hotwire cars, fighting Curly, getting girls, and my…job. I’m the getaway car 😎

Bryon

The only reason I’m here is because of Mark and Cathy. I like pool, fighting, and hanging out at Charlie’s bar. I’m here to keep Mark in line and cure my endless boredom…

Cathy

Hi there! I’m Cathy, and I joined to get away from all of my siblings (still love you guys!) I work at the hospital and am going out with Bryon. I agreed to help run the blog with Ponyboy and Cherry. ❤️

Scout

Hey, I’m Scout! (Not my real name, I will fight you if you reveal it) I don’t like my parents, but I do love to read!

I’m not sure if I am a real part of this gang, but I’ promised Pony I’d help out. I help keep the Socs away (they have enough enemies as is). I like sunsets and my car. I’ll be managing the rest of the asks! 🎀

Curly here, I pulled him bc I’m awesome obv, he was practically BEGGING to date me-

This is Pony now, Curls seems to have gotten the roles mixed up. He’s the one who memorized my schedule and hung around at the school during my track meets. He ASKED ME, well it wasn’t really an “ask” more then it was a “I was hanging out at his house and he put a note in my textbook because he was too scared to tell me himself.

After that Curly avoided me for like a week and a half, until I broke into entered his house and told him I liked him too. We were watching a sun set on Curly’s roof one night and then I don’t really know what happened, but I gave him a kiss and he freaked out. He rolled off the roof.

“NO I DIDN’T, STOP LYING” - Curly

“Curly tries to act tuff about their relationship, but really he’s a bigger simp than Pony is.” - Scout

“Okay I’m blocking all of you” - Curly

(Johnny has read through this post and has said Pony’s statement was 100% true, he also says ‘Shepard is a simp’)

Ponyboy, Cherry, Mark, Curly, and Scout headcannons

Seems obvious, but Ponyboy is the only reason they hang out together, when he’s absent they just stare at each other like 😶

The group will talk dirty about everyone, no one is safe - they’re all gossip fiends

They all laugh like hyenas, when one starts the others follow

Mark will make the most offhand comments (ex. “What’s that?” “Your mom.” “She’s dead.”) that has the rest of the group reeling

They go on road trips and side quests constantly, getting out of Tulsa in any way they can

Cherry’s car is the designated transportation, the rest of them don’t have a car, it’s always in the shop, or they stole it

Ponyboy is the academic weapon, no matter what class, the others always claim him for group projects

They are eating candy constantly, Scout is their supplier

They all give each other little trinkets: rocks, pens, candy, bookmarks, etc.

Their friend group is that one group in class that the teacher has to tell to shut up

Do you have any thoughts on Scout Jenkins from the TV show? Or any thoughts on a character design for her?

Not really- I haven’t seen the show since this summer, all I know is that I like Scout okay and I think she added to the cast pretty well.
