Legendborn Fandom Challenge: Kane Coded

So this was a challenge originally for the Legendborn Discord Server (see @infiinnityverse’s bio for the link) and may make more sense that way, but fuck it!

It’s Gemini season ♊️, and I think it’d be fun to have a classic word prompt challenge for our favorite Gemini Classics major pansexual disaster, Selwyn Kane, with a twist: a Bingo Card!

Comment on this post or DM me to receive a ✨Kane Coded Bingo Card✨, and then create a playlist, theory/headcannon, fanfic, fanart, or any other fanwork to make a bingo! The work must feature Selwyn. It can focus on a familial/platonic/romantic/sexual relationship, retro/introspection, a monologue, POV switch, anything so long as Sel is the focal point.

The bingo can be in all one work, or a series! And it’s up to your discretion if you do the center “free space” prompt Kingsmage Angst. Post your Bingo card alongside your fanwork(s) by the end of Gemini season, June 21st (or don’t. Selwyn Kane content is never out of season, imo).

The rationale behind the bingo concept is twofold:

1. Relieve pressure on fandom creatives to complete a “x number of prompts” or have something be in “x number of days” challenge in it’s entirety. Not only can that be stressful, but it can be tougher to pull off for some fanwork more than others. I’m here for stress and drama in the books proper, not the fandom experience!

2. Different arrangements of the same word prompts adds an element of surprise! We all have the same words to work off of, but each person’s interpretation of those words and/or ways combine them are bound to be unique!

Pease tag me (this @ on AO3, Twitter, and Instagram) and/or use some variation of “Kane Coded Challenge” in tags for easy searching!

Kane Coded Bingo Challenge Wrap-Up

It’s been a week since the official start of summer and the end of Gemini season, so I’d like to take some time to highlight the AMAZING Legendborn Cycle fandom curators, artists, and authors for their contributions to the Kane Coded Bingo Challenge!!!

I made this challenge because I really value the communal aspect of fandom. There’s so many unique ways to engage with amazing characters and worldbuilding Tracy gave us, and I'm so grateful to everyone who participated in giving us more to enjoy!

I would be remiss to not mention that nearly all of our Kane Coded submissions came from people who are in the Southern Chapter Legendborn Discord...there are some deep cuts y'all don't even KNOW about on there. C'mon in, the water's fine!

I love all Sel content but that sweet sweet OTP fluff? Yuh 💖

Missing Fluff Moments in Volition

Like…the intimacy Briana and Selwyn share in that sliver of time they have together post Mesmer reveal, root sharing and firefly kiss but before the Regents arrive? I just think Tracy really coulda given them a week or at least a day or two in Volition post kiss like damn 😭 ik YA pacing has to be breakneck and also we have to let Nick have a chance in book three but like…can they get a BREAK?? imagine what those extra days of no lies, no secrets between them…

I can clearly see them making sweet, tender love to each other and also can see them jumping each other’s bones…and that is a different post entirely. But outside of sheer sexuality like just CONSIDER:

• Bree sharing Sel’s bed before sunrise ands she needs to get back to the main house? Looking him in the eyes and telling him she trusts he wouldn’t do anything she didn’t want to do? Sel unsure if he’s on the precipice of Demonia or the closest to humanity he’s ever been. Experiencing and acting on emotions he’s had so long…he is self loathing, touch starved, and deeply, deeply devoted my heart can’t take this—

• Another sparring match… The banter, the teasing? I for one want Bree to unexpectedly pin Sel down with Arthur’s strength. Yeah. YEAH.

• Bree seeing Sel’s relationship to aether post root sharing change you cannot tell me she wasn’t gazing at him lovingly while his head was titled back looking at his firework aether show. Magic signature scents/magical attunement to each other convo part 2??

• I’m still waiting for Sel being able to play the violin (that’s canon right? Did I hallucinate that?) to come into play. I feel like Aunt Lu has a fiddle somewhere and is probably off the grid as far as entertainment goes…prehaps a campfire concert? Or a private one for Bree? (Side note: Valec challenging Sel to a silly fiddle off to “The Devil went Down to Georgia” a la Guitar Hero 3? Someone PLEASE write that crack I will pay you—)

• Generally experimenting with aether—idk what exactly but just non lethal things. Can they just make cute shit together? Root sharing is in a similar vein but I’m sorry that escalates so fast my man is literally drunk off of her and she can feel his gaze intensify—I…I can’t even think of something fluffy it’s just—SCREAMS INTERNALLY

• Our beloved homosexual supporting cast, William and Alice, talking shit and theorizing over the dinner table when their friends keep disappearing oh my god they’re not even subtle about it?? Frankly I want a POV of them just WITNESSING the tension between them. During fights is the most interesting but also quiet moments of rest and healing

Demonia’s Descent has a sultry vibes fosho but had to have some manipulative, possessive energy folded in for the ✨theme✨. It’s musical genres are alt/rock/pop/synth which I think lines up too.

But like…I need the devotion and admiration energy. I need some R&B/neo soul/jazzy vibes…Maxwell, Sade, H.E.R., Xavier Omär…i stand ten toes down in my selections but there aren’t many black artists in Demonia’s Descent…I’m this👌🏾 freaking close to curating a Volition Brelwyn playlist oh my god oh my god oh my god—Update: I did it >:D

Kane Coded Update

Hey y’all! It’s a little less than a week left before the (arbitrary) deadline for the ✨Kane Coded Fanwork Challenge✨!

So far, we’ve got submissions of fanfiction, fanart, a moodboard and a playlist! Reminder that your work can be anything and of any length or tone!

Reminder that if you saw a posted bingo card from someone’s submission, it’s fine if you use that, but you can always DM me for your own bingo card! Bingos can be made in any direction, and a work can focus on one or two words of the bingo at a time. I’m not your professor and will *not* follow up on the rest of the bingo if you happen to “forget”. This is meant to be light hearted and fun, no need to stress about completion or promptness ❤️ That said, I’ll probably stop disturbing bingo cards by July at the latest, so if you think you *might* want one, ask just so you have it!

I’ll be DMing people who have publicly submitted works to ask if I can tag them in one great big recap post of submissions. If you’d like to make my job a little easier, I’d be great if people could comment here or DM that it’s ok to tag them in the giant post.

Per usual, I gotta plug the Legendborn Discord. They knew about this challenge first, and we’ve more ideas for character/ship challenges later in the year—I’m particularly excited for NovemBree! 😊 Moreover, we’ve got high level theorists, an astrologist, and even a fan artist recognized by Tracy herself whom are active on there and gave amazing inspo for Kane Coded and beyond with their Discord-only posts. Between research picking up, going to LA pride and my little brother graduating, I’m very behind in commenting on all the works submitted for the challenger. Know that I see and appreciate your work even if I haven’t said anything, I’m just trying to find time to set aside time to be throughtful in my responses.

Finally? If you see me, the challenge maker, posting some fanwork dumb late…no you didn’t 😌 1) I’m Black and online CPT translates to ‘whenever I get to it’. I’m not pressing y’all cuz I’m not pressed 🤣 2) Sel is a Gemini but also has major Cancer placements so *technically* it won’t be late…I’m trying to make a songfic in the year of our Lord 2023 that NEEDS time to cook to not be painfully cringe, lmao!
