Every single person you’ve met told you that climbing into Johnny Suh’s bed was a bad idea.

You admit that it wasn’t one of your finer moments, but you had just gotten over a nasty breakup and needed someone to assure you that you were still wanted. Johnny had always been there for you, lingering in the background even when you were dating Jaehyun. He witnessed firsthand how difficult the separation had been for you and how you were struggling to be single for the first time in four years.

It’s why it was so easy for you to keep his bed warm, running your hands over his skin to soothe the ache in your chest.

But you never spoke of your arrangement with Johnny in public. Some of your closest friends knew and disapproved, but you refused to make anything regarding Johnny official and he agreed. It was better to keep your private life separate, acting as if you didn’t just ride him the previous night when you see him at Seulgi’s birthday party.

“I don’t get it,” Joohyun comments to you. You roll your eyes at her constant pestering, knocking back another shot of vodka. “You have sex, see each other all the time, yet you don’t want to call him your boyfriend?”

“Because he’s not my boyfriend,” you clarify. “I haven’t had a boyfriend for over a year.”

She winces at the mention, knowing she’s touched a sore spot. Everyone thought you and Jaehyun were meant-to-be in the fairytale type of way, which left them shocked when he dumped you out of the blue on a random Thursday evening. They secretly vowed not to mention him in front of you, and carefully planned events around making sure you two are never in the same room.

“I know we shit on you all the time for sleeping with Johnny, but maybe getting back into something serious will do you some good,” she suggests, but there’s this look in her eye that has you reaching for more.

“What are you hiding?”

Then, the door to Seulgi’s apartment bursts open. Your ex walks straight in, grinning at the partygoers while his arm is draped over a girl’s shoulder. You feel as if you’ve gotten the wind knocked out of you. It’s the first time you’re seeing Jaehyun since he left you, and you can practically hear your heart shatter into a million different pieces.

He greets your friends with a warm smile, introducing the girl next to him with a fond expression. You quickly swallow another shot before heading towards the balcony, refusing to be stuck in this room any longer. Joohyun tries to stop and reason with you, but you decline to hear her protests.

You lean over the railing, dropping your head low as you inhale sharply. You know you should have moved on by now, but the wound still feels fresh across your skin. After all, you were convinced Jaehyun was your true love and that you would live in perfect harmony. You were certain he had a proposal planned just weeks before he broke it off.

The sliding door to the balcony opens. “You shouldn’t be crying out here. This is where Donghyuck plans to smoke a joint before pissing on Seulgi’s house plants.”

“Did you know?” You question as you hear him shut the door. “Did you know he was bringing that girl?”

Johnny steps in next to you, resting his elbows over the metal pole. A red plastic cup dangles from his right hand. “I heard rumors of him popping up again, but I didn’t know he would be here tonight.”

You shut your eyes and sigh. “I’m acting like a child.”

“You’re having a very normal reaction to your ex bringing that girl. Don’t downplay your feelings like that.”

You take a hard look at Johnny. He’s wearing a baggy hoodie Seulgi bought him for his birthday last year, his hair tousled from his fingers running through it multiple times. You wonder if Johnny would make a good boyfriend. He hasn’t held down a steady relationship in years, too carefree and easygoing to care about real responsibilities.

But he’s always been a great shoulder for you to cry on. He’s never dismissed your feelings or badgered you into speaking about your troubles.

“Take me back to your place,” you request, shoving down the tears threatening to climb up your throat. “I need to get out of here.”

I think people are wayyyy to quick to jump onto assumptions about queerbaiting in kpop (not that it doesn’t exist because it can) but the idea of queerbaiting to a certain extent implies both that open depiction of queerness is an option and that things are being intentionally marketed towards queer people.

Also, queerbaiting is generally a term used when referring to fiction. Using imagery, promotional content, teasers and previews to suggest that a queer relationship will be portrayed in a story and then not actually putting it in the story itself.

Kpop however is real people. We aren’t entitled to know how real people identify or experience sexuality. And even when portraying fiction on screen, homoeroticism in itself is not necessarily queerbaiting. Regardless, open queerness is not really a choice that can be made in Korea where they still have stronger censorship laws regarding depictions of homosexuality than for heterosexual relationships.

In the case of Irene and Seulgi like people have been talking about, I don’t think it’s queerbaiting. Red Velvet is very popular in Korea so they are far more likely to prioritize marketing towards a large Korean audience than a queer audience in general. I don’t think it’s genuine representation, no, what has been put out so far appears to be about drawing intrigue, curiosity, and even shock as opposed to trying to specifically target the wallets of queer fans. But I don’t think it would be accurate to call it queerbaiting

Just as you step off the elevator, you see him. Bewildered by your presence, he glances down at his key card before shifting his gaze back to you.

“What are you doing?” You seethe, fingers curling around your own key card dug into your palm.

“Going into my room, what does it look like?” He replies, sarcasm dripping from his voice.

You scan the room number imprinted on the door, eyes widening and checking the card in your palm again. “No, no, no,” you mumble, hoping your vision has been warped. You pull out your phone and dial Yerim’s number immediately, practically fuming when she picks up.

She senses your indignation, leading you to believe this has been her plan all along. “There must have been a mixup with the reservation!” She feigns innocence, and although you haven’t seen her in a long time, you can tell when she’s lying through her teeth. “But the hotel’s fully booked for the night already, I don’t think we can ask for another room.”

The phone passes to Jaehyun, and his gruff voice hisses into the receiver. “Can you two just kiss and make up already?”

You swiftly hang up on him, raising your head and looking Lee Donghyuck dead in the eye. He has his arms crossed over his chest, pouting like the child he is.

“I’m not sleeping on the couch,” he protests.

“Well, I’m not sleeping anywhere near you, omega,” you snarl, ignoring the way he flinches at your cruel tone. “I’ll sleep in this hallway if I have to.”

“Fine!”

“Fine!”

He throws open the door before attempting to slam it, but as hotel doors tend to do, it comically closes slowly while you hear his huffs of displeasure before the deadbolt clicks. You sit on the ground, leaning against the wall while fury simmers underneath your skin. You could locate Seulgi’s room and ask to bunk with her, but you know as soon as Donghyuck sees you leaving, you would be admitting defeat.

So you make yourself comfortable on the floor, exhausted enough that sleep approaches you easier than you thought. You drape your jacket over yourself and use your suitcase as a pillow, drifting off peacefully. You ignore the other guests filtering down the hallway, highly confused by the sight of a female alpha haphazardly strung across the floor.

It isn’t until the middle of the night when you’re woken up by the pure stench of arousal from a desperate omega.

You blink away the remnants of sleep, yawning quietly as you sit up and stretch your arms out. Small whimpers echo from the inside of what’s meant to be your room, and you furrow your eyebrows at the helpless sound. Donghyuck is a whimpering mess on the bed, frantically pulling at all the sheets and blankets to construct a makeshift nest for himself.

“What the fuck are you doing, omega?”

His bleary eyes turn to you, overtaken by a cloud of desire. “A-Alpha?” He asks in a shaky voice, sweat dripping down his forehead.

You recognize the telltale signs screaming at you. “Are you in heat?” You ask in disbelief, astonished by his stupidity. “You knew you were going into heat and you still came to Yerim and Jaehyun’s engagement party?”

“It’s your fault,” he says, tears starting to roll down his cheeks. He sniffles and looks away from you, curling up in the comfort of his nest. “I-I wouldn’t have gone into heat if you weren’t here. Renjun promised you weren’t coming!”
