Best thing of having kids around is that you completely forgot the experiences they are going through. You may remember some detail or some moment, but very often, it's just not there. And then you spend time with a kid who is learning something and you go "I was like that too once, I did that mistake". You don't remember, but you know you must have walked that path in a very similar way.
#my neighbour's kid is learning to read and write#the very basics (she is too young for more)#she knows some letters but consonnants are still too abstract for her#she still doesn't know that you can use those drawings to actually draw the world that exists#she writes IAO and is very pleased that I read exactly what she wrote#she writes IALM and is very confused that I did not read whatever it is that she wanted to write#I write GATO for her and she reads it and is very surprised at the notion that right there there is a cat just like that word there!!#I remember reading posters and ads on the street and struggling with it#I remember drawing faces in the little a I had to write all over again#I do not remember that at some point consonnants were a different world completely separate from vowels#or that letters and words were something separate from the abstraction they become#I love learning and I LOVE seeing people (of any and all ages) learn#I am in a watercolour class with mostly older women#and some of them have never drawn in their life (since childhood that is)#and their style is still that of a child in a way#and they don't know how to mix colours anymore#but they draw their little flowers and their little landscapes and are satisfied with the result or disappointed that the colour is not rig
