Pitching Shows to GMMTV [1/?]

Here, I ramble about some show ideas that I have and gmmtv should make because I need to see them being made. Lots of fangirling and heaps of delulu logic ahead!

1. World’s Greatest Detective

GMMTV should make a series on Sherlock Holmes and call it “The Detective and The Doctor”. He is famous, interesting, and most importantly, queer. Why haven’t they capitalised on him yet?

It’s a surprise that they haven’t made this show yet. Ever since the copyright lifted, I was expecting some production company to make Sherlock Holmes explicitly queer and in love with Dr Watson (looking at you, RDJude). But since no one has done it (apart from “Furtive Festivity” and no, “The Irregulars” does not count), GMMTV has the golden opportunity to be the pioneer. The company is known for making QLs, then having a spin on the obviously queer detective–doctor duo will be iconic. 

I also think it will be a very profitable choice? Given that Sherlock is an insanely popular character among international fans and has also been a recognized part of fan culture. It was actually his stories that introduced me to the queer media.

I know it will be yet another adaptation, but hear me out. They don’t have to copy the stories as they are. It would not be a remake so one won’t know the story beforehand. And since Sherlock Holmes is public domain, they can just upload the show on YouTube (unlike “Cherry Magic”, “F4: Boys Over Flowers” etc)

And it will be relatively easy, a new case per week, while hinting at a bigger villain in the initial episodes and then setting him up for the finale (I know “Petrichor” is doing something similar but every mystery show isn’t about the consulting detective.) Sherlock Holmes is a character that works in every era– 1890s, 20s, 90s or the modern day, if you manage to capture his essence. Sherlock Holmes can be anyone from a 90 year old British man, a Japanese woman in her 20s or a pre–teen Canadian girl. 

I know GMMTV doesn’t make a lot of 2nd seasons (“TGG”, “Still 2gether” and now “Only Friends: Dream On” being some exceptions, and while “The Enigma 2” was announced, we know nothing else about it) but honestly? If they make this show, I hope they don’t stop at only one season. Milk it properly. Gimme like five seasons with six episodes each (no, it’s not a lot. “Granada Holmes” had 36 episodes, “CBS Elementary” had 154 episodes in total, spanning over 7 seasons).

The thing is, they have enough content to make it long. Plenty of source material (4 novels and 58 short stories is no joke) and several adaptations to draw inspiration from. Asian ones too– “Miss Sherlock” and “Sherlock: Untold Stories”. I watched the former and it was so good. A Thai adaptation will be thrilling if they utilise the local stories and settings and have a good direction. 

And that’s the thing.

They’ll need a very good director (and writing team) to pull it off. Mystery and plot twists are hard to do, if I take examples, “Not me” revealing Todd as the villain wasn’t shocking (perhaps they weren’t going for it), “The Gifted Graduation” overdid it with it’s plot twist after plot twists and the secret weapon suspense in “Home School” was straight up bad.

However, I’m sure they can pull together a good team to work behind the cameras. I hope a team that actually likes the characters and is willing to tell a good story. There is no scarcity of great detective shows, what makes Sherlock Holmes special is its characters. 

I want GMMTV to make it because I know for sure that they won’t queerbait me. They won’t make Sherlockians like me cry like the BBC version or leave us hanging like the Ritchieverse. No, they’ll have Mr Holmes and Dr Watson make out hotly in 221B Baker Street as soft violin plays in the background. 

Now, onto the Fancasts, because I obviously have some.

I want to see Sing Harit as Sherlock Holmes. Call me biased but I love him AND he’s a great actor whose potential GMMTV hasn’t fully utlised and that drives me insane. I just want to see him play a serious character without being the villain or the pervert.

Either Namtan Tipnaree or View Benyapa would make a fantastic Irene Adler. And if they want to treat fans, they can genderbend Godfrey Norton and have her played by Film Rachanun. 

I watched that last one scene from “Home School” and since then Khaotung Thanawat as Prof. James Moriarty is stuck in my brain. He’ll be effortlessly good.

Also, Ohm Pawat as Col. Sebation Moran? I’ve seen people complaining that he’s been in too many serious roles and not to typecast but Ohm would work perfectly in action roles.

This post got way longer than I expected and I got to talk about only one potential show. I’m ending it here so more parts of pitching shows to GMMTV will probably come.

                    If there was an activity people loved to present to Sherlock, it was certainly to play the game of figuring out one´s life by just a quick glance. In all truth, the detective did not have a problem with this, yet he couldn´t help, but wonder if people thought of him as some sort of genie or magical being in any case.

Lowering the cup of tea from his lips, he proceeded to give the woman in front of him one last simple look, his eyes denoting the same usual coldness he used to carry with him before he proceeded to place the cup of tea back on its small plate.

Raising now his free hands over in front of his lips, the man proceeded to explain himself ;

My BBS Journey

This is an ode to the best BL show I've ever watched. Mark it, signed and noted January 20, 2022.

With only hours left before the finale airs and my journey with BBS ends, I wanted to get some thoughts down so I can look back and remember how I felt about this series. No guarantee that this won't be disjointed and rambly. Or that it won't end up being a gush fest for OhmNanon (spoiler: it totally will).

To say that this show and OhmNanon own me is an understatement. They had me from the first note of the opening song. I came to BBS for Ohm; knew he was special since his Make It Right days, followed him to He's Coming to Me and everything since and in between. Ohm is an exceptional actor, one with the rare ability to fully use his spatial awareness to completely capture his audience. He is versatile with excellent comedic timing, a solid grasp of the dramatic beats, and is just so natural in his delivery that you forget he was ever any character other than the one you are currently watching. He also has the rare ability to have this instinctual chemistry with anyone cast opposite him, this is no small feat. You buy into his on screen relationships because Ohm fully commits. He makes everyone better. And does it while making it look so effortless that you're just a puddle of awe on the floor. It's wild to me that he's still somewhat underrated and underappreciated in the acting world. Like what? How? Do people not have eyes?

I wasn't as familiar with Nanon, but it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say I came for Ohm but stayed for Nanon. All the acting superlatives and awards are one thousand percent deserved when it comes to Nanon. I've never seen anyone act so convincingly with just their eyes. The saying 'eyes are the windows to the soul' is very apt here. With Nanon, you feel what he feels, just from his eyes alone. He projects every emotion from annoyed to bashful to distraught with barely any facial movement and it's just like whaaaat?? How is that even possible? And to think he's so young and is only scratching the surface of his craft. I can't wait to see what else he does. I think he'll surprise us again and again. ALSO I've never seen a more beautiful crier in my life. And I never knew that a person's freaking dimples could be an entire character on a show. We were blessed to see these boys share the screen together as partners elevating each other; two halves of a whole. I doubt we'll ever get to experience this again; does lightning ever strike twice?

I'm usually a binge-watcher. I'm incredibly impatient so BBS is the first drama I've ever watched as it was airing. And oh boy was it a special brand of agony waiting for new episodes each week. But you know what? In some ways it made the journey that much more fulfilling. The anticipation was thrilling. The sherlocking of previews of the next episode was utterly enjoyable. I don't envy those who get to devour all 12 episodes in one go (okay, maybe a little, but not in the way you'd think). I'm mostly envious of those who get to experience BBS for the first time with open hearts and open minds and then to be entirely consummed by the superior acting, directing, editing and music. It's like reading this amazing book, getting sucked in completely by the author's world, to love each moment and scene so much that you want to crawl inside it and simply live in that moment forever. To know that you can never go back and experience that first time ever again. It's like that.

I watch BL alone and only partially by choice (I get annoyed at interruptions when I'm immersed in a show... yes, I'm a shush-er), but also because I don't know anyone else IRL that enjoys BL. BBS isn't my first show and probably won't be my last, but where it stands out amongst the many is that I've never felt the need to talk about my watching experience (probably because all previous viewings were of the binge-variety). For BBS, not only did I create a tumblr account to engage with other fans but I also started using twitter too just to get the latest rumors and spoilers. IRL I'm a shy introvert so this branching out and seeking out others to discuss BBS is a whole level of scary and unfamiliar. But it was also a necessity. I HAD TO find people to talk BBS with, there was no other way to get through the week. But what surprised me the most was I fully anticipated lurking and reading blog and twitter posts and nodding along to myself, never posting my own content. But here I am nearly 300 tumblr posts later. So I want to thank you tumblr friends and BBS enthusiasts for making it easy to join and engage. To know exactly what I mean when I say, Ohm completely slayed this episode or Nanon served and ate that scene. Thank you for getting it, truly.

But the end, as they say, is near and while I'm sad that we've reached this point, another part of me is happy I get to be here for it, to live the ending as it happens. To experience it with so many of you who all understand how special BBS is and how it's more than just a show, it's a legacy in the making. Since episode one, BBS was out to set the BL world afire, to subvert expectations and turn the ordinary into a game-changing, genre-busting, and an award-worthy masterpiece. BBS set the bar and I'll be surprised if any show that comes after it will ever match it in quality let alone surpass it. There's only so much organic magic to be had and BBS may have used it all up. More incredibly at the crux of all of this...is a simple love story made extraordinary by a wonderful script, masterful acting and impeccable direction. Underneath all of that though is a tale as old as time- of two people who just want to be free to love and live the way they deserve. And isn't that simply what we all want?

AN HONEST PERSONAL OPINION (Part 5)

10 Years Ticket

I’m SO EXCITED about this one. Can’t wait to see Ohm, Off and Tu act in this, it looks like it will open a whole new dimension. I’m excited to see a few of the supporting cast members act in this as well. I have a feeling this one is going to be a good one. The more projects Ohm and Off do the better they get and I just can’t describe my emotions. Plot-wise this seems interesting, the way everyone’s characters will handle the murder seems to be going very very very deep. Also I feel a bit bad for Off being the oldest cast member and he also has to third-wheel, poor baby.

Would I watch it? A hard yes.

Why would I watch it? I’m excited to see the cast members grow.

You Fight, and I Love

Awwwww Love looks so tiny next to Josh! I think they look good together. I’m also excited to see Neen, Victor, Force, Papang and Mick in this. It looks full of angst of course but I don’t hate it. Plot-wise nothing special but what can I say, I want to give this show a chance.

Would I watch it? Eh, I guess (?)

Why would I watch it? I’m really interesting in how Josh and Love’s chemistry would work out.

Midnight Motel

Man this one looks so good! I want to watch it SO bad! Off is taking another step forward in his career with this one! Jan hun, yes! Mond and Louis, what a turn table! The plot feels so fresh to me I would eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s dark but not as dark as we’re used to. It’s the right amount of mysterious. I just love it! And murder again, man I have to re-read all the Sherlock books and get ready!

So Earth’s character is this extra hot restaurant owner that raises his nephew (?). Somehow he meets Mix’s character and they start something although Mix has a boyfriend (AH FIRST MY DEAR BOY)… Khaotung’s character is in love with Earth’s character (?) ALSO WAS THIS SIGN LANGUAGE????? The more I think about it the better it gets!

Would I watch it? ABSOLUTELY

Dirty Laundry

Film and Nanon, I approve! P’Godji’s character, so good. P’Jennie and Foei, YES I AM SO IN LOVE. Pond, please stop it! Nanon is indeed a chameleon, THE BOY CAN DO ANYTHING! Plot is so weirdly good that I can’t stop thinking about it. It looks like a silly show but we need those as well and with so many good stuff in this one I WOULD NEVER SAY NO! It literally has everything, from gangster drama to silly love stories.

Would I watch it? A hundred times yes.
