I just started BBC Sherlock and, r u kidding me?? Like, they are SO clearly canon. I only watched the first season and my mind was already working almost as fast as Sherlock's thinking about how many fanfics can be done with those two (it was effortless work I'm telling you).
John 'I was a military doctor at war but I very much know how to use a gun, you breathe near him once, and you'll get perfectly acquainted with the bullet' Watson and Sherlock 'I never cared about anyone's wellbeing but yours, god have mercy with the people that hurt you because I won't' Holmes in a fic where Sherlock is being threatened with some kind of weapon or something and John is the one that ends up being hurt.
John saying out loud his usual 'amazing' 'that was incredible' 'fantastic' to Sherlock and him being like 'I swear to god if you say that again one more time I won't be able to control myself' before he kisses him
Them kissing for the first time and John asking Sherlock to try and make observations and deductions about the apartment or himself and Sherlock starting to gradually find it more and more complicated until he has nothing to say cause John is 'kissing him senseless' LITERALLY
I. NEED. FICS. FOR. THESE. TWO. ASAP. I don't think I'll live in peace otherwise 😭
P.S. BBC, my friend, honestly, ANOTHER masterpiece?? At this point just write me my life, hand me the script and I'll happily follow (make the queer part canon tho :))

Favorite Johnlock Fics (BBC Sherlock)
I went on a bit of a fic-reading spree this spring, and this list of favorites is the result! There are many other fics that I’ve enjoyed reading, but these are the ones that I’ve really loved for one reason or another.
I’ve tagged the authors whose tumblrs I could find. If that’s you, thank you so much for sharing your writing with us. If your work is on here, you wrote something that I really treasure.
1. A River Without Banks, by Chryse. E, 203,286 words. Starts right after Season 3. A mix of Sherlock’s perspective, John’s perspective, and the perspectives of other characters. Sherlock-focused for the first half.
Author’s summary: “‘You love this, being Sherlock Holmes.’ He had once. When had it all gone so wrong?”
This is my absolute favorite. The author’s characterization of Sherlock is amazingly accurate, and Sherlock’s character development over the course of the story is breathtakingly executed and moving. The plot is fantastic and takes you on a page-turning emotional roller coaster, especially for about the first half of the story. I was also continually impressed by how many details from the show and references to earlier parts of the fic the author was able to weave in throughout while still keeping the story creative and original. Most importantly, though, I love this fic for the message that it sends about Sherlock and John’s love, which is a far more positive message than the one that the actual show settled upon in the end. I’m grateful that we have this version of their love story, and, personally, I like to pretend that this was Season 4 and how the show ended.
2. Another Country, by Chryse. E, 67,414 words. Starts right after the end of TAB. Sherlock’s perspective.
Sherlock spends one month and three days under house arrest in 221B, trying to get clean from the drugs, track down the new Moriarty, and figure out what the hell is going on between him and John.
Another fantastic work by Chryse. This author really gets Sherlock’s character, and once again the characterization of Sherlock is spot-on and convincing. There are a few other elements that also make this a compelling story, including smart use of minor characters, a solid central mystery, and a complicated relationship between Sherlock and John that includes a pretty convincing post-Season-3 version of John. Excellent.
3. walk through ghosts, by @augustbird. M, 6,125 words. Written between Seasons 2 and 3. Sherlock’s perspective.
Author’s summary: “The thing is: Sherlock thought that the two of them would have forever to figure it out.”
This is the saddest fic I have ever read, and so beautifully written. The author captures Season 2 Sherlock’s character perfectly; the fact that this story feels so real is what makes it devastating. The day after I read this, I couldn’t stop thinking about it and walked around with my heart physically aching in my chest.
4. Nature and Nurture, by @earlgreytea68. M, 203,273 words. Set sometime after Season 2. Alternates between John’s and Sherlock’s perspectives, but mostly told from John’s.
The British government clones Sherlock. He and John decide to raise the baby.
A true fandom classic. The premise sounds super cracky, but somehow it really works. This fic is surprisingly serious at times, but overall it is the cutest and funniest thing I have ever read in my life. Basically 200,000+ words of Sherlock and John being adorable gay fathers together and working through some feelings, with line-by-line some of the most hilarious dialogue ever. The five accompanying ficlets that the author wrote as short follow-ups are also worth checking out; my favorites were School (T, 4,753 words) and The Radovljica Apicultural Museum (T, 4,540 words).
5. To a Friend Who Sent Me Roses, by @algyswinburne. E, 16,147 words. Set sometime after Season 4 (but ignores TFP, as we all should lol). Sherlock’s perspective.
Author’s summary: “Five times Sherlock is mistaken for John’s partner and Rosie’s father, and one time it isn’t a mistake.”
This fic is sad, sweet, and hot by turns. Absolutely lovely to read in so many ways, and with so many great details and lines. I think this story offers convincing portrayals of what Sherlock’s and John’s characters might be like after it all and how they might finally get together. This and A River Without Banks are my favorite alternate endings to the show. Beautiful!
6. for all that bitter delights will sour, by @darcylindbergh. E, 9,585 words. Set sometime after Season 3. Sherlock’s perspective.
John initiates a sexually and emotionally abusive relationship with Sherlock.
The second saddest fic I have read. I would never want what happens in this fic to happen to Sherlock and John, so I don’t exactly recommend it as a Johnlock fic. But as a short story, this is a gem, full of absolutely gorgeous and incredibly moving writing. It depicts difficult themes very deftly, in lines and paragraphs that I had to stop to read over and over. I appreciate this as an emotionally powerful and thought-provoking piece of writing inspired by Sherlock, so for that reason I think it deserves to be on this list.
7. The Ground Beneath Your Feet, by Chryse. E, 68,803 words. Set after Season 3, but as if the last two minutes of HLV never happened. “The plane went on to Eastern Europe, and this is what came after.” John’s perspective.
This fic is pretty dark; the author describes it as “a PTSD story in which John was wholly devoted to Sherlock.” I don’t love it quite as much as the other two fics by Chryse that I’ve listed here, but that’s mostly because those two are just so amazing! I still really enjoyed this one. It was wonderful to see a kind and caring version of John emerge out of Season 3, and the story had several memorable moments, including one particularly nail-biting scene. I also really liked seeing John and Mycroft become friends as they bonded over their shared concern for Sherlock.
8. The Adventures of a Single Girl in London (Plus a Consulting Detective), by @earlgreytea68. M, 32,913 words. Set soon after Season 3. Alternates between different characters’ perspectives.
Bored with life at her new cottage in Sussex, Janine returns to London and moves in with Sherlock at 221B. Hilarity, heartbreak, and eventual Johnlock ensue.
This is a Season 3 fix-it fic that features an absolutely lovely friendship between Sherlock and Janine and the best version of Janine that I’ve come across in a fic. Sherlock is vulnerable and sweet, John is an absolute idiot, Janine is perfect, and the last two chapters just make me scream. Great stuff.
And that’s it for now! If you know of any other fics that I might like based on the above, I’d be happy to hear about them, so drop me a line!
Happy reading 😊

Trying to get more into old movies because of this blog (I only know about half of these people and feel like a poser) do you have good recommendations on where to start or is it just a situation where you watch stuff and find what you like as you go?
you are not a poser <3 i myself am just here for the hotties.
here is my quick and dirty list of fun films to start with if you're new to old movies. and of course if you like one of these, do try to find more stuff as you go! there's no bad way to try out old movies.
(this list is not official and is SUPER quick. i'm tagging for content warnings where I can, but if I forgot something let me know.)
"I want to watch something SILLY!"
The Court Jester (Danny Kaye, Angela Lansbury, Glynis Johns, Basil Rathbone)—everyone in this movie is hot. everyone is in fancy medieval dress, which makes them hotter. everyone here is very silly. You can stream this on Hoopla, last time i checked, so you might be able to stream it through your library!
Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang (Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries, Gert Frobe)—some people hate this movie and to them I say What Is Wrong With You. dick van dyke is a hot absent minded inventor who lives in a windmill with his two adorable children, his gorgeous sheepdog, and a grandfather who is categorically useless. it feels like the two films mary poppins (1964) and willy wonka (1971) had a baby and that baby was born on roller skates singing an old broadway showtune. this one has been showing up in some odd places lately—I think you can catch it on Tubi or Hoopla? It's definitely around.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Jane Powell, Julie Newmar, Howard Keel, Russ Tamblyn)—my problematic fave. everytime i watch this i change my mind whether it's a sexist pile of garbage or a feminist paean, and fellas, today we're on the feminist paean bandwagon!! jane powell's millie is truly the star of the movie, she is the hero she drives the plot the narrative is on her side, and besides all that there are seven very hot men dancing next to her and six beautiful ladies making me bisexual. (on Tubi last I checked.)
The Duke Is Tops (Lena Horne, Laurence Criner)—I get a huge kick out of watching Laurence Criner and Ralph Cooper swindle everybody while also trying to put on a show; there's just something silly and sincere here, plus you get a ~musical extravaganza~ at the end when all is right as rain again. Free on YouTube I think?
"I want to watch something DRAMATIC that may make me FEEL SOMETHING."
Witness for the Prosecution (Marlene Dietrich, Tyrone Power, Elsa Lanchester)—I love a campy twisty turny mystery, don't you? :) I'm not going to talk about this one much because it's better to go in blind, but if you like Agatha Christie stories you'll probably like this.
To Be Or Not To Be (Carole Lombard, Jack Benny)—always relevant, always makes me laugh, also makes me cry. this takes place in poland during wwii so big tw for nazi imagery and mentions. (don't worry. this movie fucking hates nazis.)
Seven Samurai (Toshiro Mifune)—this one is Great Cinema™™™™™™™™™™™ for a goddamned reason
"I want to watch some stuff with the scrungles in it!"
Mr. Washington Goes to Town (Mantan Moreland)—I've been checking out more of Mantan Moreland's stuff because every time I see him in something I think he's delightful, and I really enjoyed this silly-spooky comedy. Does this story have a brain cell? No. Are the special effects and goofy slapstick fun? Yes. This is a fun example of an all-Black cast in a film that was made for Black audiences, and is a striking counterpoint to the stereotypical representation Black actors were given in white-targeted films, showing the enormous amount of talent and artistry the racist studios missed out on by excluding these actors. This is not A Great Film™ but it's still A Fun Time,™ with a goofy Laurel and Hardy type vibe. (It's free on Youtube.)
The Red Shoes (Robert Helpmann, Leonide Massine, Marius Goring)—hey kid, you wanna watch something fucked up? This movie is so fucked up. It's about ballet, it's about art, it's about technicolor, it's about dance and toxic relationships and making theatre and nightmares and ambition and death. A lot of these recs tend on the silly side (because I tend on the silly side) but this one is actually Serious Film and will definitely help you chat up Martin Scorsese should you ever meet him. Big content warning if you can't handle dark themes right now—this movie's pretty dark, not in the gore way but in the Haunting Creepy Image way. (it's also free on Tubi and Kanopy most of the time.)
The Invisible Man (Claude Rains)—my favorite of the vintage horror flicks and a great introduction to Most Dunked On Hot Vintage Man of All Time, Claude Rains. (it helps that you barely ever see him!) Very very silly but the special effects are just plain fun. (I think this is on Internet Archive in full?)
"Can I just get more hot people please?"
Flower Drum Song (James Shigeta, Nancy Kwan, Miyoshi Umeki, Jack Soo)—there are so many unbelievably hot people in this movie which is somehow very good (thanks to its cast) and also incredibly, horrifically bad (thanks to its white team of writers, directors, and producers). on the one hand, it's a mostly Asian cast in a big budget, beautifully designed MGM style musical! there's dream sequences, lots of fun dancing, crooning Rogers & Hammerstein cabaret moments, and just charm galore. it is also freighted with so. many orientalist assumptions and stereotypes, absolutely ridiculous shit that the writers ABSOLUTELY should have known better about in the 60s and nonetheless carried into this. this is a hard one to recommend because I loved this cast, and I loved seeing them in a context beyond the usual stereotypical bit parts so many of them frequently were limited to—yet the movie itself perpetuates so many stereotypes on its own it can be a hard one to watch, and I totally understand if it does not work for most people. tl;dr watch for Shigeta, Kwan, Umeki, and the others, but content warnings galore for one (really bad) case of yellowface casting, orientalist tropes, extremely stereotypical character types, etc. (On Tubi/Kanopy last I checked.)
Charade (Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, James Coburn)—this movie feels like a Hitchcock movie except I had a ton of fun watching it, which I can't always say for a Hitch film. (I told you my taste was bad.) This one is free on YouTube and thank god because Audrey wears a lot of Givenchy, Cary Grant wears spectacles and keeps almost dying, it's very exciting and thrilling and funny and sexy. I don't think there are any content warnings but it's been a minute since I watched it. (I should go watch it right now.)
The Big Sleep (Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall)—they're so hot askjdljhjghladkghjksahkhgslkahgshskjhgsalhgsahgjh. i like this one a lot :)
[this is NOT A FULL LIST of all the hot vintage movies to start with but it might give you some starting places! i banged this out as quick as I could at 2 am, so apologies that it's sloppy and not perfect.]
#recs#asks#coffee night#me 10 seconds after posting: oh fuck wings why didn't i mention wings. oh fuck sherlock jr. ohhh little women. oh CASABLANCA oh NO

Oh, that's a very good question. I am not going to put them in order, just a Top 10.
An Ounce of Cure by @bakertumblings
Drawn to Stars by @totallysilvergirl
The Agony and The Ecstasy of Sherlock Holmes by @gaylilsherlock
Rebuilding Rome by @silentauroriamthereal
Indefinite Lines by @arwamachine
and your very flesh shall be a great poem by CaitlinFairchild
Whirlwind by @discordantwords
The Grating Roar by @engazed
The Vapor Variant by @88thparallel
Repairing the Broken Things by @bakertumblings
An Innocent Man by Fangs-Fawn
Be Here Now by Todesfuge
And wow, we've reached 12(!!) already. 😭
So many more authors and stories belong on that list (and yes, I am aware that bakertumblings is on here twice, but I just couldn't help myself.) Thinking of @raina-at , @calaisreno, @helloliriels, @jbaillier, @lisbeth-kk , @holmesianlove and many more. The Sherlock fandom is blessed with so many great writers.
Lots of John whump to find in this list, I like my boy beaten and bloody suffering. 😇
Thanks for the ask!

Dept. Q
Dept. Q, the new Netflix crime series that crawled into my basement office, knocked over my trauma binder, and whispered,
“he’s not healing, he’s compartmentalizing.”
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
So picture this: Matthew Goode, a man of mystery and cheekbones honed like a Doric column, stars as DCI Carl Mørck, an emotionally repressed detective exiled to a damp Edinburgh storage closet for having the audacity to feel guilt. He’s been shot, his partner’s paralyzed, and he’s one passive-aggressive eye twitch away from exploding into a cloud of sarcasm and unresolved grief. In short: my favorite genre of man.
He gets dumped into Department Q, aka “cold case hell,” aka the bureaucratic oubliette where dreams go to die. Enter:
🌀 Akram Salim, the Syrian ex-cop with the quiet competence of a haunted falcon
🌀 Rose, a Gen-Z goth admin who’s either 10 seconds from quitting or founding a cult
🌀 Rachel, his therapist, who is VERY tired of his deflection tactics
🌀 Jamie Sives in a wheelchair giving the performance of a lifetime from a living room
AND THE VIBE???
It’s bleak. It’s beautiful. It’s marinated in saltwater trauma and the distant cry of seagulls judging your life choices. Edinburgh doesn’t just rain, it broods. Every alley looks like a Victorian ghost crime happened there. The show is soaked in political rot, vanished women, metaphor-heavy grief, and enough emotional repression to power the National Grid. The lighting? Bisexual. The mood? Scandinavian noir but dragged through Scottish Calvinism and left to simmer in a Tupperware of guilt.
The writing? Sharp enough to leave a scar.
The pacing? Deliciously slow and unsettling like it’s daring you to pay attention.
The cases? Grim as hell and coiled like barbed wire. The dialogue? Absolutely feral, half cryptic muttering, half emotional shrapnel. And the acting?? So devastatingly precise I had to keep pausing just to *recover* from a single eyebrow twitch or a haunted inhale.
And Matthew Goode?? I did not expect this man to hit me with “dismantled ex-detective who keeps a metaphorical graveyard in his chest cavity” energy but HERE WE ARE. He’s not just sad. He’s SAD in a way that screams “I don’t deserve closure.” And the show lets him sit in it.
Akram, meanwhile, is the only adult in the room and barely holding it together. Their partnership? Full of tension and cautious loyalty and so many unspoken feelings that I’m going to need the two of them to go out for emotionally repressed pints and maybe a rooftop shouting match.
Some critics are like “Hmm the pacing is slow” and I’m like GOOD. LET ME MARINATE IN THIS MAN’S BURNING GUILT. I want my mysteries with trauma and unresolved father issues. I want “redemption is a myth and closure is earned.” I want the visual metaphor of a man dragging boxes of dead girls up the stairs.
💀 Verdict: 9/10 emotionally stunted detectives in a trench coat.
🖤 Watch it if: you like Broadchurch, Mindhunter, Dark Academia detective edition, or yelling “OH YOU POOR THING” at your screen.
🚬 Watch it if: you believe in the healing power of trauma bonding, old case files, and emotional repression.
GO WATCH IT. Just don’t expect to come out emotionally unscathed. fuel my coffee addiction here : https://ko-fi.com/zarainink

As proposed by @fluffbruary, I have made a Valentine's rec list. Now that I've read through it, It seems to have become more of a love letter...
First of all, I want to thank someone special in the Sherlock fandom - the remarkably talented podficcer extraordinaire @podfixx There isn't a day that goes by without that comforting voice weaving its way to my heart and core. Picking a favourite is almost impossible, because every single one is a gem. But, there is one I will promote a little extra on this romantic day.
The Wedding Garments by cwb
Summary: This is the story of a young consulting detective who wants nothing to do with marriage and an army doctor who wants to find true love. It's 2020 post-Brexit England and the British government is encouraging arranged marriages. Candidates meet through state-run agencies and date in hopes of finding love (and tax benefits). Sherlock doesn't need or want a spouse, at least not until John Watson shows up. Hesitant to give in to his more carnal urges because of the way they derail his mind, how will Sherlock progress toward the more intimate aspects of a relationship? The answer lies in a very special wedding gift.

There are authors and fics out there that get less attention than they deserve. This story is just one example of that. It's utterly sweet and there's a dog! Sherlock's dog. Please, give it some love!
Late Nigh Emergency by consult_this_prick
Summary: Sherlock shows up late one night with his sick dog at the doors of John's veterinarian clinic.
There is a collection on AO3 I want to direct your attention to. It's called Johnlock on Holiday in FTH 2024 The title says it all, really. Perhaps you'll find some holiday tips.

Victorian Edition, Part 2: Five Recs + 2
I promised a second part of this edition of RRR, and it looks like Part 2 won't be the last. I've read so many fantastic ACD fics that I'd like to share:
The Beginning of Always / @mydogwatson : John Watson wants to be a doctor. Sherlock Holmes wants to be a consulting detective. Most of all, they both want to be loved. Author note: The idea of using Joseph Bell [the inspiration, in part, for ACD in creating Holmes] came to me from @thegildedbee and I was excited to run with it.
My note: If you're looking for well-written, fully imagined ACD stories, you could go to no better author than @mydogwatson. Mostly short stories, lots of Christmas ones.
Bad Dog by RatTale: During a hard case Holmes and Watson part ways after an argument, and now Holmes suddenly has more to worry about than missing children.
My note: RatTale has written a number of stories, all of them loved by me. This one was taken down for a while, but has recently been restored.
A Pertinacious Idea by @victorianpining : "I am compelled to admit that, having taken my pen in my hand, I do begin to realize that the matter must be presented in such a way as may interest the reader."
Summary: One wintry evening, Dr. Watson returns home to find that Holmes has rekindled their most longstanding disagreement by creating his own rendition of one of Watson's narratives. Braced for criticism, in reading Holmes' story Watson instead finds the one thing he had long believed Holmes to be incapable of giving.
My note: Go read this! Beautifully written.
Heaven and Earth by @a-candle-for-sherlock : At first, the wonder of his resurrection had blazed so bright that I saw nothing else. Joy, joy impossible had been returned to me; death itself had been undone. But as the miracle faded into everyday light I began to see that time had not been likewise reversed; time had done its implacable work. He was not the same as he had been.
My note: tender, beautiful. I've reread this one a thousand times.
Rewriting History by rachelindeed ( @educatedinyellow): A correspondence between Holmes and Watson in the immediate aftermath of the Great War in which they discuss questions of history both public and personal.
My note: another one I've reread over and over. Developing relationship, Thucydides. That says it all.
Plus two of my own:
The Silence Between Us by @calaisreno : Watson is a proper Victorian man, a stranger to himself, unwittingly complicit in his own unhappiness. On a journey to London to see Holmes after ten years of silence, he tries to understand their broken friendship and his own grief.
My note: This might be my single favorite ACD story I've authored. This unhappy, conflicted Watson finally breaking down and realising he loves Holmes is one I cherish.
Bodyguard by @calaisreno : Captain John Watson, wounded in Afghanistan, is looking for employment. Sherlock Holmes is looking for something else. Fortunately, they can solve one another's problems.
My note: One of my oldest stories on AO3, this one doesn't get read much, but it's funny! A casefic, with an enthusiastically involved Watson (in drag for one scene) and an indulgent Holmes.
Thank you for reblogging! Let me know if you want to be tagged/untagged.

RIP Jean Marsh (1.7.1934 - 13.4.2025)
"Well, I’d been friends with Eileen [Atkins] for six or seven years when we started talking about it. We came from the same background, a working-class background, and we were thinking idly about trying to create something, maybe a television series, maybe a film, we weren’t quite sure. And the idea gelled through two different experiences: one was watching The Forsyte Saga, that was made sometime in the '60s, and we thought, 'Well, that’s all really wonderful, but who washed the clothes? Who ironed them? Who’s cleaning the boots? Who’s doing all the work?' And we thought, 'Gosh, it’s so unfair you never see the real workers.' That was one seed. We had chips on our shoulders. And then Eileen found a photograph of her mother with a group of servants standing by a horse-drawn bus for a servants’ outing, so we thought, 'Let’s write about downstairs people.'"
"I get a residual for the idea [for Upstairs, Downstairs] as much as I get a residual for the acting. It's a very low fee. I think I got something like $100 an episode initially for the idea, and my royalty is based on that rate. I've got a saying: 'If it had been made in America I'd be Mary Tyler Moore. As it is, I'm Mary Tyler Less.'"

Jean could play tragic waif as well as she could#play gutsy heroine as well as she could play appalling villain. her breadth as an actor was unusual but thrilling‚ and her name in the#opening credits was zero indicator of which Jean you could expect. some actors can play against type but she never had a type‚ she did it#all. for my recs: her screen time in Dark Places is fleeting and only in the closing minutes‚ but she is incendiary‚ a revelation of#disturbed malice and indignation. she's also in one of the very best Saint eps‚ 3.10 (The Imprudent Politician) and is wonderful
