ゼンゼ「第一次試験合格者18名。まずは、合格おめでとう。私が担当する試験に関しては、これまでの結果から、実に様々な憶測が飛び交っていると聞く。君たちの中にも、噂を耳にした者はいるだろう。だが、身構える必要はない。試験は至ってシンプル。一級魔法使いを目指す者ならば、難なく切り抜けられるものだ。それでは第二次試験の詳細を説明する。」

Zenze “Dai-ichiji-shiken gokakusha ju-hachi-mei. Mazuwa, gokaku omedeto. Watashiga tanto-suru shikenni kanshitewa, koremadeno kekka kara, jitsuni sama-zamana okusokuga tobikatte-iruto kiku. Kimitachino naka-nimo, uwasao mimini shita monowa irudaro. Daga, migamaeru hitsuyowa nai. Shikenwa itatte shinpuru. Ikkyu-mahotuskaiwo mezasu mono naraba, nan-naku kirinuke-rareru monoda. Sense “To the eighteen of you who passed the first test… First, congratulations on making it here. I hear people speculate all kinds of things about my tests based on past results. I’m sure there are some of you who have heard such rumors, but you needn’t prepare yourselves for the worst. The test is very simple. Anyone who wishes to become a first-class mage should be able to pass it with ease. Now, allow me to explain the details of the second test.”

ゼンゼ「第二次試験は迷宮（ダンジョン）攻略だ。君達には零落の王墓の攻略を行ってもらう。合格条件はただ一つ。零落の王墓の最深部まで辿り着くことだ。」

Zenze “Dai-niji-shikenwa danjon koryakuda. Kimi-tachiniwa Reirakuno Obono koryakuo okonatte-morau. Gokaku-jokenwa tada hitotsu. Reirakuno Obono saishinbu-made tadori-tsuku-kotoda.”

Sense “For the second test, you will be raiding a dungeon. You will raid the Ruins of the King’s Tomb. There is only one condition for passing: you must reach the deepest floor of the tomb.”

ゼンゼ「私は平和主義者でね。争いは好まない。よって辿り着いた者は全員合格とする。」

Zenze “Watashiwa heiwa-shugisha dene. Arasoiwa konomanai. Yotte tadori-tsuita-monowa zen’in gokakuto suru.”

Sense “I am a pacifist. I dislike fighting. Therefore, everyone who reaches the bottom will pass.”

ブライ「待て。ここは多くの冒険者が帰らぬ者になった未踏破のダンジョンだ。また合格者を出さないつもりか？」

Burai “Mate. Kokowa ookuno bokenshaga kaeranu-mononi natta mitohano danjonda. Mata gokakushao dasanai tsumorika?”

Blei “Wait. Many adventurers have failed to return from this unexplored dungeon. Are you planning to fail all the test-takers again?”

ゼンゼ「何を言っている。君たちが目指しているのは魔法使いの最高峰だ。不可能を可能にするのが一級魔法使い。未踏破だろうが前人未踏だろうが、ねじ伏せて突き進むんだ。」

Zenze “Nanio itte-iru. Kimi-tachiga mezashite-irunowa mahotsukaino saikohoda. Fukano’o kanoni surunoga ikkyu-mahotsukai. Mitoha daroga zenjin-mito daroga, nejifusete tsuki-susumunda.”

Sense “What are you talking about? You are attempting to reach the pinnacle of magehood. First-class mages make the impossible possible. You must forge ahead, regardless of whether or not anyone’s been there before you.”

メトーデ「最深部に辿り着いたということを、どう証明すればよいのですか？金銀財宝でも持ち帰ればいいのかしら？」

Metode “Saishinbuni tadoritsuitato iukoto’o do shomei sureba yoino-desuka? Kingin-zaiho demo mochi-kaereba iinokashira?”

Methode “How should we prove we’ve reached the bottom? Should we return with treasure?”

ゼンゼ「証明の必要はない。私も共に最深部まで潜る。無論、受験者に手は貸さんがな。」

Zenze “Shomeino hitsuyowa nai. Watashimo tomoni saishinbu-made moguru. Muron, Jukenshani tewa kasan-gana.”

Sense “You won’t need to probe it. I will descend to the bottom of the dungeon with you. Naturally, I will not be assisting the test-takers.”

ゼンゼ「それと全員にこの瓶を渡しておこう。一級魔法使いレルネンが開発した、脱出用ゴーレムだ。瓶を割ればゴーレムが現れ、ダンジョンの外まで運び出してくれる。試作段階だが安全性は十分だ。使用者は不合格となるが、負傷などで試験継続不可能と判断したら、迷わず使うんだ。将来有望な人材が死ぬのは許容できん。それと明日の夜明けには、自動で瓶が割れるようになっている。それが第二次試験の期限となる。それでは試験開始だ。」

Zenze “Soreto zen’inni kono bin’o watashite-oko. Ikkyu-mahotsukai Rerunenga Kaihatsu shita, dasshutsu-yo-Gōremuda. Bin’o wareba Gōremuga araware, danjonno sotomade hakobi-dashite kureru. Shisaku-dankai daga anzen-seiwa jubunda. Shiyoshawa fugokakuto naruga, fusho nadode shiken keizoku fukanoto handan shitara, mayowazu tsukaunda. Shorai yubona jinzaiga shinu-nowa kyoyo dekin. Sense “Also, each of you will receive one of these bottles. It’s an escape golem developed by the first-class mage Lernen. When the bottle is shattered, the golem will manifest and carry you out of the dungeon. They’re still prototypes, but they’re safe enough. Using your bottle means you fail the test, but I urge you to do so if you become unable to continue due to injuries or otherwise. I have no intention of allowing mages with promising futures to die here. Also, the bottles will shatter automatically at dawn tomorrow. That is the time limit of the second test. Now, let the test begin.”

リヒター「入り口が複数あるな。」

Rihitā “Iriguchiga fukusu aruna.”

Richter “There are multiple entrances.”

デンケン「統一王朝期のダンジョンのようだな。この時代のダンジョンは入り口が複数あるが、どれも最深部に通じている。それぞれの入り口を調べれば、ある程度の内部構造が分かるだろう。全員で手分けをして…」

Denken “Toitsu-ochokino danjonno yodana. Kono jidaino danjonwa iriguchiga fukusu aruga, doremo saishinbuni tsujite-iru. Sorezoreno iriguchio shirabereba, aru teidono naibu-kozoga wakarudaro. Zen’inde tewakeo shite…”

Denken “This seems to be a dungeon of the Unified Dynasty. Dungeons of that era have multiple entrances, but they all lead to the deepest level. Examining the entrances should allow us to determine the internal structure of the dungeon. The group should split up and―”

トーン「何故協力する流れになっているんだ？」

Tōn “Naze kyoryoku suru nagareni natte-irunda?”

Ton “Why are you acting like we’re working together?”

デンケン「今回の試験には争う要素がない。全員で協力した方がいい。」

Denken “Konkaino shiken-niwa arasou yosoga nai. Zen’inde kyoryoku-shita-hoga ii.”

Denken “There’s no reason for us to fight this time. It’s better for all of us to cooperate.”

トーン「それは無理だな。第一次試験とは違って、合格条件に仲間の生存がない。徒党を組んだところで仲間を助ける義理はないし、いざという時は捨て石にされるリスクまである。特にあんたはダンジョンに詳しいようだしな。俺は一人で行く。」

Tōn “Sorewa muridana. Dai-ichiji-shikentowa chigatte, gokaku-jokenni nakamano seizonga nai. Toto’o kunda-tokorode nakamao tasukeru giriwa naishi, izato iutokiwa sute-ishini sareru risukumade aru. Tokuni antawa danjonni kuwashii yodashina. Orewa hitoride iku.”

Ton “I can’t agree to that. Unlike in the first test, our companions’ survival isn’t a condition for passing the test. We’re not obligated to help each other, and we even risk becoming someone’s sacrificial pawn if the need arises. You in particular seem knowledge about dungeons. I’m going alone.”

ヴィアベル「まあ第一次試験の柵（しがらみ）もある。少なくとも、よく知らねぇ奴とは組めねぇよな。行くぞ。」

Viaberu “Maa dai-ichiji-shikenno shigaramimo aru. Sukunaku-tomo, yoku shiranee yatsu-towa kumeneeyona. Ikuzo.”

Wirbel “We’re all carrying baggage from the first test. At the very least, I can’t work with anyone I don’t know well. Let’s go.”

エーレ「ちょっと。待ってよ。」

Ēre “Chotto. Matteyo.”

Ehre “Wait for me.”

デンケン「馬鹿が。協力することの優位性に気付けんとは…」

Denken “Bakaga. Kyoryoku surukotono yuiseini kizuken towa…”

Denken “Those fools. Why don’t they realize working together is better?”

フリーレン「行くよ。フェルン。」

Furīren “Ikuyo. Ferun.”

Frieren “Let’s go, Fern.”

フェルン「いいんですか、フリーレン様？」

Ferun “Iindesuka, Furīren-sama?”

Fern “Are you sure, Ms. Frieren?”

フリーレン「協力は駄目だね。もう成立しないよ。」

Furīren “Kyoryokuwa damedane. Mo seiritsu shinaiyo.”

Frieren “There’s no chance of everyone working together anymore.”

ゼンゼ「うーむ。では私は君達に付いて行こう。君達が一番安全に最深部に辿り着けそうだ。」

Zenze “Ūmu. Dewa watashiwa kimi-tachini tsuiteiko. Kimi-tachiga ichiban anzenni saishinbuni tadori-tsukisoda.”

Sense “I see. I shall accompany your group. You seem like you’ll have the safest time reaching the bottom.”

フリーレン「邪魔しないでよね。」

Furīren “Jama shinaide yone.”

Frieren “You’d better not interfere.”

ゼンゼ「しないよ。邪魔も手助けも。」

Zenze “Shinaiyo. Jamamo tedasukemo.”

Sense “I shall neither interfere nor assist you.”

フリーレン「ここが一番安全なルートだよ。マッピングしながら慎重に進もうか。」

Furīren “Kokoga ichiban anzenna rūto dayo. Mappingu shinagara shinchoni susumoka.”

Frieren “This is the safest route. We’ll proceed with caution while mapping the dungeon.”

フリーレン「そこの床、罠だから気を付けて。」

Furīren “Sokono yuka wana-dakara kio tsukete.”

Frieren “The floor there is trapped. Be careful.”

フェルン「相変わらずダンジョンに詳しいですね。」

Ferun “Aikawarazu danjonni kuwashii-desune.”

Fern “You always know so much about dungeons.”

フリーレン「前はそうでもなかったんだけれどもね。ヒンメルがダンジョン好きだったから。魔物の討伐依頼で沢山のダンジョンに潜ったんだよ。」

Furīren “Maewa sodemo nakattan-dakeredomone. Hinmeruga danjon sukidatta kara. Mamonono tobatsu-iraide takusanno danjonni moguttandayo.”

Frieren “I didn’t always. It was Himmel who loved dungeons. We entered so many of them to hunt down monsters.”

フェルン「ダンジョンが好きって、どういうことですか？」

Ferun “Danjonga sukitte doiu koto desuka?”

Fern “What do you mean, he loved dungeons?”

フリーレン「言葉通り��意味だよ。わくわくするんだってさ。訳がわからないよね。」

Furīren “Kotoba-doorino imidayo. Waku-waku surun-dattesa. Wakega wakaranai-yone.”

Frieren “It’s exactly what it sounds like. He said they excited him. It doesn’t make sense, does it?”

アイゼン「次の階層に続く階段だな。」

Aizen “Tsugino kaisoni tsuzuku kaidan dana.”

Eisen “These stairs lead to the next floor.”

ヒンメル「そうか。こっちのルートはハズレだな。さっきの分かれ道まで戻るぞ」

Hinmeru “Soka. Kocchino rūtowa hazure dana. Sakkino wakare-michi made modoruzo.”

“I see. Then we chose the wrong route. Let’s head back to the last branch.”

ハイター「そうですね。」

Haitā “Sodesune.”

Heiter “Indeed.”

アイゼン「何故だ。俺達の目的は最深部にいる魔物だ。」

Aizen “Nazeda. Ore-tachino mokutekiwa saishinbuni iru mamonoda.”

Eisen “Why? We’re looking for the monster at the bottom of the dungeon.”

ヒンメル「いつになったら学ぶんだ、アイゼン。ダンジョンは一つの階層を全て踏破してから次に進むものだ。冒険者の常識だぞ。」

Hinmeru “Itsuni nattara manabunda, Aizen. Danjonwa hitotsuno kaiso’o subete toha-shitekara tsugini susumu monoda. Bokenshano joshiki dazo.”

Himmel “When will you learn, Eisen? In a dungeon, one must explore the entire floor before proceeding to the next one. Every adventurer knows that.”

アイゼン「そんな常識はないぞ。」

Aizen “Sonna joshikiwa naizo.”

Eisen “I’ve never heard that before.”

ヒンメル「馬鹿みたいだって思っているだろう。楽しんで人助けができるのなら、それが一番じゃないか。」

Hinmeru “Baka-mitai-datte omotte irudaro. Tanoshinde hito-dasukega dekiruno-nara, sorega ichibanja naika.”

Himmel “You think I’m being foolish, don’t you? But isn’t it best to be able to have fun while helping people?”

フリーレン「いつまでもこうはいかないよ。旅が進めば命懸けのダンジョンも増えてくる。」

Furīren “Itsumademo kowa ikanaiyo. Tabiga susumeba inochi-gakeno danjonmo fuete-kuru.”

Frieren “It won’t always be like this. As we travel, the dungeons will become more life-threatening.”

アイゼン「そうだそうだ」

Aisen “Soda soda.”

Eisen “That’s right.”

ヒンメル「最後まで楽しむよ。楽しく冒険して、ダンジョンに潜って、魔物を倒して、宝を探して、気が付いたら世界を救っていたような、そんな旅がしたいんだ。」

Hinmeru “Saigo-made tanoshimuyo. Tanoshiku boken-shite, danjonni mogutte, mamono’o taoshite, takarao sagashite, kiga tsuitara sekaio sukutte-itayona, sonna tabiga shitainda.”

Himmel “I intend to enjoy it until the end. I’ll have fun adventuring, raiding dungeons, defeating monsters, finding treasure, and before I know it, I’ll have saved the world. That’s the kind of adventure I want to have.”

ヒンメル「それに別れ道の先にあるのは、珍しい魔導書かもしれないしな。」

Hinmeru “Soreni wakare-michino sakini arunowa, mezurashii madosho kamo shirenaishina.”

Himmel “Besides… There might be a rare grimoire down the path left untraveled.”

フリーレン「何やってるの？早く戻るよ。」

Furīren “Nani yatteruno? Hayaku modoruyo.”

Frieren “What are you doing? Let’s hurry back.”

ヒンメル「えぇ…」

Hinmeru “Ee…”

Himmel “What?”

ーーーーー

フリーレン「本当に訳がわからないよね。」

Furīren “Hontoni wakega wakaranai-yone.”

Frieren “It really doesn’t make sense, does it?”

ーーーーー

ラヴィーネ「カンネ、行こうぜ。」

Ravīne “Kanne, ikoze.”

Lawine “Kanne, let’s go.”

リヒター「結局残ったのは5人か。」

Rihitā “Kekkyoku nokotta-nowa go-nin-ka.”

Richter “In the end, only the five of us stayed.”

デンケン「全員で協力して役割分担をすれば、攻略の可能性は十分にあった。それだけの実力者が揃っていたはずだったのだがな。」

Denken “Zen’inde kyoryoku-shite yakuwari-buntan’o sureba, koryakuno kanoseiwa jubunni atta. Soredakeno jitsuryokushaga sorotte-ita hazu dattano-dagana.”

Denken “We could’ve beaten the dungeon easily if we’d all worked together and assigned roles. We had enough skilled mages to make it happen.”

リヒター「デンケン、皆があんたほど割り切れる訳じゃない。第一次試験の最後にあんたも言っていただろう。」

Rihitā “Denken, minnaga antahodo warikireru wakeja nai. Dai-ichiji-shikenno saigoni antamo itte-itadaro.”

Richter “Denken, not everyone is as pragmatic as you. It’s like what you said toward the end of the first test.”

リヒター「気に食わなかったんだろうさ。より賢い連中が残った。そう思えばいい。少なくともこの中に、ミミックのような単純な罠に掛かって足を引っ張る馬鹿はいない。それでいいだろう、デンケン。」

Rihitā “Kini kuwanakattan-darosa. Yori kashikoi renchuga nokotta. So omoeba ii. Sukunaku-tomo kono nakani, mimikkuno-yona tanjunna wanani kakatte ashio hipparu bakawa inai. Sorede iidaro, Denken.”

Richter “It must not have sat right with them. Think of it this way: only the smartest have remained. At the very least, there aren’t any idiots here to hold us back by falling for simple traps like mimics. Isn’t that good enough, Denken?”

デンケン「そんな馬鹿がこの試験にいるものか。行くぞ。」

Denken “Sonna bakaga kono shikenni irumonoka. Ikuzo.”

Denken “I doubt anyone that foolish would be taking this test to begin with. Let’s go.”

フリーレン「この魔力…　魔導書かも。」

Furīren “Kono maryoku… Madosho kamo.”

Frieren “This mana… It might be a grimoire.”

フェルン「フリーレン様、“宝箱を判別する魔法（ミークハイト）”の判別結果は見ましたよね。ミミックです。」

Ferun “Furīren-sama, ‘Mīkuhaito”no hanbetsu-kekkawa mimashita-yone. Mimikku desu.”

Fern “Ms. Frieren, you saw the results of that Mikheit spell. It’s a mimic.”

フリーレン「フェルン、その魔法の精度は99％だよ。」

Furīren “Ferun, sono mahono seidowa kyuju-kyu-pāsento dayo.”

Frieren “Fern, that spell is only 99% accurate.”

フェルン「それがどうかしたのですか？」

Ferun “Sorega doka shitano-desuka?”

Fern “And what if it is?”

フリーレン「残りの1％を見破った偉大な魔法使い達がいたからこそ、歴史的な発見があったんだ。」

Furīren “Nokorino ichi-pāsento’o miyabutta idaina mahotsukai-tachiga itakara-koso, rekishi-tekina hakkenga attanda.”

Frieren “Historical discoveries have been made by great mages who recognized that remaining 1%.”

フリーレン「うん。やっぱりそうだ。この中身は貴重な魔導書だよ。私の魔法使いとしての経験が、そう告げている。」

Furīren “Un. Yappari soda. Kono nakamiwa kichona madosho dayo. Watashino mahotsukaito shiteno keikenga so tsugete iru.”

Frieren “It’s just as I thought. There’s a valuable grimoire inside here. That’s what my experience as a mage is telling me.”

フリーレン「暗いよー！！怖いよー！！あっ、あっ、暗い！怖い！」

Furīren “Kuraiyō!! Kowaiyō!! A, a, kurai! Kowai!”

Frieren “It’s dark and scary in here! It’s dark! I’m scared!”

フリーレン「あっ、あっ、あっ、暗いよ！怖いよ！」

Furīren “A, a, a, kuraiyo! Kowaiyo!”

Frieren “It’s dark and scary!”

ゼンゼ（付いていく人達、間違えたかな…）

Sense (Maybe I chose the wrong people to follow.)

デンケン「中心の床は踏むなよ。天井が落ちてくるぞ。」

Denken “Chushinno yukawa fumunayo. Tenjoga ochite-kuruzo.”

Denken “Don’t step on the floor in the center. The ceiling will come crashing down on you.”

ラオフェン「まさかそこの人型の染みって…」

Raofen “Masaka sokono hito-gatano shimitte…”

Laufen “Is that person-shaped stain there…”

リヒター「えげつないな。骨も残らないのか。」

Rihitā “Egetsu-naina. Honemo nokoranai-noka.”

Richter “Brutal. It doesn’t even leave bones behind.”

ラオフェン「ガーゴイルだ！」

Raofen “Gāgoiruda!”

Laufen “Gargoyles!”

リヒター「デンケン、一人閉じ込められた。」

Rihitā “Denken, hitori tojikome-rareta.”

Laufen “Denken, someone got trapped.”

デンケン「わかっている。」

Denken “Wakatte-iru.”

Denken “I know.”

リヒター「壁の向こうだ。」

Rihitā “Kabeno mukoda.”

Richter “She’s on the other side of the wall.”

デンケン「下がっていろ。」

Denken “Sagatte-iro.”

Denken “Stand back.”

デンケン「…やはり駄目か。止むを得ん。瓶を割れ。」

Denken “…Yahari dameka. Yamuo en. Bin’o ware.”

Denken “It didn’t work. Then we have no choice. Break your bottle!”

ラオフェン「すげー」

Raofen “Sugē“

Laufen “Wow.”

デンケン「もう、一人脱落か…　少しの油断が命取りになるな。これが零落の王墓か…」

Denken “Mo, hitori datsurakuka… Sukoshino yudanga inochi-torini naruna. Korega Reirakuno Oboka…”

Denken “We’re already down another test-taker. Letting your guard down for a moment here could cost you your life. So these are the Ruins of the King’s Tomb.”

ーーーーー

フリーレン「ねぇフェルン。ちょっといいかな。いったん引っ張るのやめよ？ちぎれちゃうから。」

Furīren “Nee Ferun. Chotto iikana. Ittan hipparuno yameyo? Chigire-chau-kara.

Frieren “Hey, Fern. Can I make a suggestion? Stop pulling. You’re going to rip me in half.”

フェルン「はい。」

Ferun “Hai.”

Fern “Okay.”

フリーレン「こういうときはね、逆に押し込むんだよ。ミミックがオエッてなって噛むのやめるから。」

Furīren “Koiu tokiwane, gyakuni oshikomun-dayo. Mimikkuga oette natte kamuno yamerukara.”

Frieren “To save someone from a mimic, you should push in instead. It makes the mimic choke and stop biting.”

フェルン「犬か何かなんですか？」

Ferun “Inuka nanika nandesuka?”

Fern “Is it a dog or something?”

フリーレン「ふぅ…　助かった…」

Furīren “Fu… Tasukatta…”

Frieren “I’m safe.”

フェルン「まったく。一人のときは、どう処理していたんですか？」

Ferun “Mattaku. Hitorino tikiwa do shori-shite itandesuka?”

Fern “Honestly. How did you get out of those when you were by yourself?”

フリーレン「攻撃魔法で内側から爆破していた。でも髪の毛がチリチリになっちゃうから嫌なんだよね…」

Furīren “Kogeki-mahode uchigawa-kara bakuha shiteita. Demo kaminokega chiri-chirini nacchau-kara iya-nandayone…”

Frieren “By blowing them up from the inside with offensive magic. But I don’t like to do it since it makes my hair frizz up.”

フリーレン「ただいま…　縦ロールになっちゃった…」

Furīren “Tadaima… Tate-rōruni nacchatta…”

Frieren “I’m back. I have ringlets now.”

フェルン「ときどき髪型変わっていたのって、そういうことだったんですね。」

Ferun “Tokidoki kamigata kawatte itanotte soiu koto dattan-desune.”

Fern “So that’s why you’d sometimes have a different hairstyle.”

フェルン「なんで？」

Ferun “Nande?”

Fern “Why?”

フリーレン「じゃあ気を取り直して、攻略を進めるよ。」

Furīren “Jaa kio tori-naoshite, koryakuo susumeruyo.”

Frieren “Let’s pull ourselves together and keep going.”

フリーレン「ガーゴイルだ。動き出す前に倒すよ。」

Furīren “Gāgoiruda. Ugokidasu-maeni taosuyo.”

Frieren “Gargoyles. We’ll defeat them before they start moving.”

フェルン「このメダル、色んな場所で見かけますね。」

Ferun “Kono medaru ironna bashode mikake-masune.”

Fern “We’ve been seeing these medals all over the place.”

フリーレン「どっかの好事家が集めてるらしいよ。」

Furīren “Dokkano kozukaga atsumeteru rashiiyo.”

Frieren “Apparently some dilettante collects them.”

Iguro Obanai didn’t get paid enough for this shit. A man had reported his group of buddies missing and demanded something to be done. Now this had been a common occurrence however, nasty groups or even demons seemed to drop off the face of the earth when around this damned Shiro Mountain. Not that he cared, but since it was a mission he now had to care. Shinpuru village was really the only place he cared to look. Being the village nearest to the seldom known Shiro mountain it was the best shot at finding and slaying the demon that resided there. So with a low snarl he obeyed his kasugai crow and headed off. The whole deal with Tanjiro and his demon sister weighed heavily on his mind, sour thoughts ran through his head as he pushed more power into his legs quickening his pace. He was met at Shinpuru village by the man who had submitted the report, a ragged looking man who reeked of old sake and sweat, and was instantly bombarded with insults.

“What the hell took ya so damned long?! Incompetent slayers think they’re all special. Bullshit I tell ya. What are you doing just standing there? Find them, you braindead moron! Fucks sake what scu-”. The man was cut off by Obanai’s glare.

“Shut your mouth drunkard, Now, explain what happened and I’ll be well on my way to finding your little friends.” With that the man answered what he could of the pillar’s questions. Obanai, finding he truly knew nothing, asked around town of the mens’ whereabouts. The town’s treasurer -a rather tall and lanky male with short cut brown hair and an easy smile- approached the newcomer, and answered his questions; telling him what had transpired a mere week earlier. From the ruffians’ pillaging to the dear girl Akira, who had prayed to their God and saved them all. Obanai raised a brow when he had started the story, looking for the said pillaging however nothing was destroyed in any way, nothing was out of order in the slightest in fact. However, the longer that the man spoke, the more Obanai scowled ‘Demon.’ Nodding to the man’s story, he asked where he could find the girl Akira.

There was a slight knock at the door and Akira’s mother rushed to open it. Standing before her was the town treasurer followed by a shorter male -chin length black hair with unevenly cut bangs, heterochromia eyes, a wrapped lower face wearing a striped haori and a small white snake wrapped loosely around his throat- the treasurer, Dan, smiled and introduced his companion with soft spoken words.

“This is Iguro Obanai, the Serpent Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps. He wishes to see Akira and speak with her about what happened last week” The woman nodded, turning to Obanai and gesturing him inside with a slight bow.

“I will fetch her from her room for you, please wait a moment.” Obanai nodded and took a seat on the tatami mats near the kotatsu. Moments after he became comfortable, a soft padding of footsteps brought his attention to the girl who had just entered. Akira sat across from the man, giving a slight bow which he returned.

“You wish to know about that night?” Akira questioned. Obanai nodded

“Yes, what happened when you prayed to your so-called god? That night was there anything that caught your attention? Did you see, hear or even smell anything odd?” She gave a small laugh and Obanai couldn’t help but frown at the ten-year-old.

“When one prays to our god, it is a one way communication. We humans do not get a direct response from our god, we request and thank, then leave; whatever our God does is of their own choice but often in our favor and encompassing our request. As for your other questions, I was asleep within ten minutes of retiring to my quarters and woke in the morning. By that time, the men were gone, our crops restored, and new materials for repairs waiting to be used.” Akira spoke so surely Obanai would have suspected her of benign the demon had she not been sitting in a patch of sun without so much as a single burn appearing and full human features staring back at him. Obanai paused again before deciding to dig further.

“If this God lives on the mountain, is there any way I can venture to said God?”

“As long as one does not wish to harm the mountain and has a good soul they can venture upon the mountain as they wish. Be warned, those with evil intentions do not return.” Akira’s mother spoke. Akira nodded to this and spoke before Obanai had the chance

“If you wish, I can take you up the mountain side. But I will not lead you further than the white line.”

“White line?” Obanai questioned. Akira’s mother spoke again.

“Where the mountain goes from lush greenery to a white wonderland. Life remains plentiful but what grows there is white. From plants to animals, in fact, it has been seen that if you release a creature above the white line they will become white as well. It is a consuming purity, one only a God can maintain.” Obanai frowned at this, ‘All white?’ He thought. ‘This has to be the work of a demon.’ Obanai faced Akira again

“Be my guide to the mountain, I will go past the white line whether you guide me or not. I have business with your so-called God.” At this statement Obanai stood and looked to Akira, “Let’s go, I want to be above the white line before sunset.” Akira nodded before heaving a sigh and waving to her mother.

Obanai silently trailed behind the girl as she walked through the town. Weaving through the small market and up to the base of the mountain to what looked to be a small shrine. Akira beckoned Obanai into the pristine shrine, a consuming white occupying every surface and object. Akira bowed to the altar where a staff resided before speaking in a polite tone,

“Kami of Shiro Mountain, I bring to you Iguro Obanai the Serpent Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps. I request that he has safe travels for he will venture above the white line in search of you. Please protect him for he has not harmed any member of our village and seems to be of good intentions. Thank you Kami-sama” The girl stood and brushed her knees, ridding them of any non-existent dust that had clung to the fabric of her long skirt. She then turned to Obanai and spoke again “We are ready.” With that she left the shrine and walked further up the mountain path. Obanai was on guard, this place was quite beautiful however with the presence of the so-called God on the mountain he was on edge. Akira stopped and Obanai snapped his eyes ahead, a line of white was in front of them. Neither the foliage, nor path had changed with the exception of the pristine white color that dominated everything in sight. Obanai frowned, ‘The sheer amount of white is almost suffocating, it's like the shrine all over again.’Akira turned to Obanai and spoke again, “This is where I leave you, I look forward to seeing your safe return.” and with those words she left, padding back down the mountain to the village.

Obanai looked forward and sighed, he definitely wasn’t paid enough for this shit.
