i think people are free to interpret the characters' dynamics and relationships however they want. it's totally fine for them to not ship sherliam, but in that same way they should be fine with people shipping sherliam. i don't go around saying people who ship, for example, johnlock are delusional. how is that my business? do whatever you want! ship sherlock and william with whoever you want! i don't care! good for you! 😭

i don't rlly wanna get defensive bc i genuinely don't care about people who don't ship them, but sherliam is still the official pairing. even if their relationship is(...was) officially described as rivalry, they're still a pair and they get paired on stuffs like official illustrations, merchs etc whether you like it or not

well i'm a sherliam shipper myself so i am a bit biased lol. i feel like it's a bit hard to say they're "proofless" when they were intended to be pairs from the start and their relationship progress was integrated into the story itself

for example there are multiple instances--multiple? two instances where they're described as being "destined," which are this jump sq manga dojo post or the volume 17 synopsis (the jump sq post is an interview thing with the authors where miyoshi sensei also explained how she came up with sherliam's character designs etc, it's pretty interesting so i recommend you read it! it's in japanese, so download the pics and use machine translator to read it)

they probably weren't being straightforward about it, but assuming these implied they're soulmates: are they platonic or romantic soulmates? i don't know! how do YOU want to interpret it?

obviously they never said "hey these two are dating!" in the story so in theory sherliam aren't really 'canon,' but this is where us fans come in to make analysis/theories, fanarts, fanfics, etc! that's what makes it fun, the fact that people can come up with different interpretations! if something from the source material can only have one meaning it'd be so boring!!

fandom activities are supposed to be a hobby, something that you do for fun. if it stresses you out or makes you upset because of, say, a ship you think doesn't make sense, maybe take a step back and see where you went wrong. if you have time to call other people delusional because of a ship they like, what about using that time to talk about ships that YOU like instead?

I always caveat these posts by saying that we shouldn’t make assumptions about morality or character based on people’s fandom opinions or what tropes/ships they enjoy, but asking questions about broad fandom tropes does make inquiries about where in wider culture certain beliefs/tropes have filtered in from.

So here’s one: Why is it that Fandom logic = motherhood makes female characters boring, but fatherhood is so interesting that wolfstar raises Harry, Jegulus raises harry, rosekiller raises Neville…. Perhaps the slytherin skittles start a day care?

Why is caregiving character development for men, but character erosion for women?

And I also completely acknowledge that wanting to explore alternative non heteronormative family structures is big a reason behind this trend (and that is not what this discursive post is talking about). Plus in canon, motherhood is heavily idealised and there is an inherent desire to unpick and unpack that, but resisting the idealisation of motherhood shouldn’t mean we erase it altogether.

But this trope does play out against a wider cultural backdrop, too. We’re living in a time where people (fuelled and in response to alt right discourse) are presenting extreme takes on motherhood: that it’s either sacred and natural (and the only thing a woman’s body is good for- which also then fuels gender essentialism) or inherently repressive and patriarchal. Fandom’s treatment of mothers often reflects that same polarisationn; either pedestal or disposal. Rarely do we get the messy, complex middle where motherhood is just part of a woman’s story.

It also speaks to a broader media pattern here too: domestic labour and parental sacrifice- it’s all seen as mundane in women (because it is coded as the default for mothers) but when a man does it, and then suddenly it’s praiseworthy.

Fandom isn’t activism but I enjoy unpacking trends and what they speak to in the broader social landscape.

- they notice how he interacts with you more than any other hero’s, and how he seems more relaxed around you.

- and they notice the hickies on your neck where your costume doesn’t cover.

there’s been a lot of bartylily discourse (i feel like) recently so i wanted to add my two cents to the conversation. and to preface, people can do whatever they want with these characters, these are just my personal opinions.

i think that bartylily is the most interesting when they’re equals. it’s kind of a subversion of the expectation for both of them. barty as this domineering evil psychosexual disaster is pulled down to earth and made soft and curious by his relationship with lily, and lily as the perfect background mother/wife/student/best friend is made confident and adventurous and independent by barty. if you allow them to exist in their predetermined roles within the ship, i think it falls flat. sub lily x dom barty is boring because it’s expected. if you want that, you need to board the toxic jily train and let james be the shitty person he is. <- that dynamic is way more interesting to me (in fact i’m writing a fic about it. shameless self promo).

bartylily is about acceptance and personal agency and breaking the cycle and letting go. it’s about finding a mirror in another person you would’ve never expected. it’s about making choices. i’ve been saying this but barty is not a rebellion, he’s the first thing lily decides she can have. barty doesn’t make lily feel small. he makes her feel like the possibilities for her life are endless. he also gives her permission to suck sometimes, to be selfish and make mistakes. he just allows her to be a person. and she gives that right back to him. she defines his edges a little bit because he sees parts of himself in her (temper, lack of direction, forced confinement). it’s surprisingly balanced and beautifully finite. they’re both meant to eventually be elsewhere. but that doesn’t mean this isn’t important.
