I feel like one of the paladins would make a point out of learning ASL. “But who uses that it space?”, “WELL ENGLISH SEEMS TO BE A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. SO MAYBE ASL IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE FOR THE DEAF IN SPACE”. Also, non verbal communication is great. Like, you have a sore throat? Sign. You are so worked up you can’t speak? Sign. You want to talk to your friend but you can’t be too loud? Sign. I’m just not sure which paladin would be so set on learning ASL.

yeah, that ‘all aliens speak English (and yet don’t have ‘English’ sounding names)’ was a bit of a weird one.  Granted, it was a kid’s show and kids shows usually tend to skip over the communication gap but writing-wise it does make for some awkwardness.  Plus Pidge was trying to learn Altean so canon acknowledges that there are separate languages no one seems to be speaking.  Having one of the paladins learn ASL is a bit fourth wall breaking therefore if they’re going to use it to communicate with aliens but - really, it would hardly be the only thing that is and its an interesting concept so why not?

That out of the out of the way, I do have Shiro (or his clones at least) communicating with a form of sign in my story Falling.  Not necessarily ASL so much as short-hand signals for more wordy concepts.  The idea being that in the silence of space sometimes its easier or more efficient to just use sign to communicate with your space walking partners instead of using the comms.  Also you should always have back up in case the comms go down.  And lastly there might be things you don’t want recorded but you’d like to communicate.  So in my headcanon at least Shiro knows and uses a kind of short-hand ASL for space walkers that most of the experienced astronauts of that time have picked up and passed along with additions to each new generation.  Military uses a kind of short-hand sign to communicate actions and ideas as well in our world and since the Garrison is quasi-military in structure at least, why not?  So first up, I’d say Shiro.

Which one would consciously and intentionally learn ASL specifically in complete for communication purposes though - that’s a tricky one.  My first thought would be Pidge.  She was already shown trying to learn Altean and it makes sense that she’d continue to want to learn languages that make operating easier for her.  She’s not really a great communicator of the team however and unless ASL helped her interact with computers or foreign techs she might not see as much a point behind it.  She places a LOT of faith in computers and doesn’t seem to make contingency plans for when they break other than ‘fix them’.  So Pidge might be the first one to put in the idea of learning ASL for communication purposes but I don’t know if she’d volunteer to learn it herself unless the rest of the team did.  So I'm going to go with Lance as a good candidate for learning ASL for the purpose of communicating.  He’s the one that wants to interact with aliens the most and if he’s ‘a boy from Cuba’ than its pretty clear that he’s already bi-lingual.  He’s also surprisingly good about anticipating upcoming problems when he puts his mind to it and having ASL to fall back on if the communicators/translators stop working would make sense.  Plus it would let him talk to Hunk while other people are giving long diplomatic speeches so he’d see that as a bonus too - and Hunk would probably be interested in learning ASL if Lance was.   

An interesting addition to this thought, since we’re digging rabbit holes, is - how does sign language work for the aliens?  Do the ones with four arms carry on two levels of talk at once, the top part being the polite social one and the second being what they’re really thinking?  Do the ones with flippers, the ones with tentacles, the ones with multiple or fewer fingers, have their own variations to communicate the same thing?  Do the space pirates have a second type of sign like thieves cant they use to recognize and communicate with each other on the sly?  Can Slav dither in five different thought trains all at once?  Lots of interesting routes this could go and ways it could play out in fics for sure.  Intriguing idea, Nonnie!

Somehow it worked

So long story short, Lance and Keith went from not liking each other to tolerating the fact that they had to interact with each other as they had mutual friends. To well, now in this gray area where they could laugh and just hang out. It had been nice. Very chill in some occasions. But for Lance. Well, he still didn’t know where to go from there.

He felt as if he were drowning.  

Not that he knew as to why he thought that, it just became a thing. They talked. Had sat next to each other but there had been something there. A barrier? Maybe a wall. He didn’t know how to describe it. Only that he was lost.

Did he ever find the answer? No. Not exactly. But he did figure that somewhere along the way when he was friends with Keith, they noticed the shift there. Where they could have a peaceful moment and something in the air would just feel warm and soft. Like the sweaters his grandma made him.

Or how a bottle would be placed on the table and the whole gang would just start up a game. His limbs would relax, his eyes would roam until he would catch Keith’s. They wouldn’t say anything about it. But he knew that Keith wanted something.

The beach had become a place where Lance and Keith went to. Why exactly there? Well, he didn’t know the complete answer. He knew that Keith was that kind of guy that liked nature and privacy. While Lance had grown up close to the ocean that he found himself comfortable with the idea of going back there as he had spent many summers there during his childhood.

It had become a place just for them, and it had in turn offered a zone where they often told each other their secrets.

Some were harmless. Others they had made Lance see why his heart fluttered like the waves in the ocean. Always crashing, always cycling back to the earth. Just like how Lance couldn’t go a day without having Keith close by. They just stayed like that.  

It had been a peaceful transition if he had to be honest. Watching the sky changing colors as time went by. With Keith’s body heat close to his and Lance seeing the world hum in silence. He could get used to it. Maybe he had been starting to when Keith kept calling for him to meet him by the beach where their spot would be secluded enough.  

Where the world was quiet enough, and they had that extra layer of protection to seek each other without judgment. He knew it could had been dangerous to linger in that kind of approach, but when Keith never scorned him, he had felt so relieved. As if he had been accepting each part, he had been showing to him. Few people ever saw the sides that he showed him. It had been terrifying.  

But it had been also liberating too when Keith had been patient and astute to let him be himself. As if he were allowed to be imperfect.

“Will you ever stop that?”

“Stop what?”

Keith would look at him, and Lance swore he felt the insides of his body turn over when he finally elaborated. “Will you ever stop devaluing yourself?”

Lance wished he knew the answer to it or had been able to deflect it. But he couldn't because of how his heart had drained itself from blood, and how it had banged itself against his chest in the same way a rain storm raged on. Luckily there had been no water works that day. But Keith’s words, they had lingered. For a lot longer than he wished they had.  

It gave way to him constantly thinking about how he viewed his life.

How sometimes, he felt like he was a jellyfish. Invisible to most, soft all around but not defenseless. He could handle his own obstacles, could bring home the bacon just fine. Keith, had known about that. Had seen Lance work hard to get where he was. But Lance wished that Keith would just accept his help too.

They had known each other for a while now. Had begun to get closer. But that didn’t mean that Keith let Lance in. Not like he let anyone else if they weren’t Shiro.  

He understood.  

He really did. (But he couldn’t help but sigh dejectedly.)

Once he found the time to go back to the beach, he remembered the silly dreams when he had been younger when he wanted to be a merman.

It had been one of the oldest memories that he could recall perfectly. With his tiny forearms being taped with plastic fins, alongside with flippers on as he pretended to be a merman with his siblings. He even dressed up as one for Halloween a couple years in a row. Funny enough that had been the costume that he wore when he first met Keith. And it had also been what started their very long history together.

Not that he thought about it a lot. It just came up like how other memories did when somebody wanted to replay old ones. It had been a normal reflex. He wasn’t being weird.  

They had started talking more. Slower, practically cautious now if Lance had to think about it. By the time that they found a pace that worked it had gone back and forth like walking in a swamp during summer.  

It could have been worse. Could had made them lose all connection all together. But the great thing about them was that they were both stubborn people.

They both made the efforts to see each other, to understand that they were both going in different directions in life but were still committed into being in each other’s lives. And that... that had been enough for him.

Normally when people spoke about ice or in general winter, they didn’t always give it a positive review.

In Lance’s opinion that had been terrible because ice was a beautiful concept. A lovely invention that nature created. It had been how he got Keith to ice skate with him when the lake near his grandma’s house froze.  

It had been why their time together was spinning into a warmer direction. Yeah, winter could be a pain to get to work and school, but when he saw Keith’s smiling face when the snow dropped, he could deal with the thousands of sweaters he would have to wear throughout the whole season.  

Because, Keith’s smile had been (and maybe had always been) everything to him.

Keith had been the first to kiss him.  

It had been during a late night where the ocean waves were slowing down, and he had been able to taste the salt water from Keith’s lips. The sand in between his toes hadn’t been that comfortable, but when it happened, the fact remained that they both knew what they had been desperately trying to figure out.  And the kiss had said it. Had made Lance lean closer, to practically now clutching the front of Keith’s shirt as he tried his best to memorize the sensation of his heart bursting from happiness.

It had been gratifying to have his feelings finally have a name for it after so long of wondering what had been plaguing him. To have an unexpected epiphany grab onto him; he had loved its sudden entrance into his life.  

Because wasn’t that how life liked to play? Being so unpredictable, but oh so, wonderful? He never wanted the night to end.

And it never technically ended since then. No matter what happened, he always smelt the ocean when Keith was by him, he could remember how tight Keith held on to him when they ice skated, or how wonderful it had felt like the impression of water running down his skin on hot summer days when Keith kissed him.

It had been a completely blissful awakening for him (and he was sure Keith thought so too when he smiled at him).

When he got cornered by the mist that morning, he saw something very clearly. Between all the ups and downs, Keith had often been a center for him. In his own ways he known how to talk to Lance. Had made him feel like he could walk forward to any path because he had him.  

In any form, in any time, they just worked. They were Keith and Lance. Two people that despite how they first met, they had found a way to live side by side. The mist wasn’t scary to him anymore. Just like how the ocean had never scared Lance.  

It had been funny how the person that Lance first didn’t like had also become the very person that helped him overcome his own insecurities. To learn how to love himself. It reminded him of the time when he first learned how to swim. The water from the lake didn’t compare to the ocean. But in the beginning when he had a whole lake to learn to navigate, he remembered what his older siblings taught him. He took it easy, with one arm stretching out, then a leg pushing him forward.

It had been a very tedious routine, but with Keith, it had become a routine into stopping his negative thoughts. Obviously there still had been some bad days, when Lance had been learning. And it helped that he had seen the end of the tunnel because Keith had been walking with him.

It had made it easier to understand what Keith had been trying to say all that time ago. Life could and will be so much brighter once he stopped being so hard on himself.

It felt a little cheesy to say that Keith reminded Lance of a lighthouse. But he did, he was a pillar where the light helped lost people find their directions. He may have not looked like that at first glance, but years since Lance got to know him, he could see the connection.  

He was strong and safe.  

And in Lance’s life he knew that as much as they were still new to their relationship, he could say that they were both learning how to be better alongside each other. They could do it. And they would achieve that happiness.

Because, he knew that they had each other to count on.

FROM HIS LATEST TO HIS FIRST: HARUKI MARAKAMI

To read a Murakami novel is to cross the threshold into another reality – a reality that looks like this one, where surreal phenomena goes unexplained, dreams may not just be dreams and wherein pervades an often unquantifiable sense of ennui, nostalgia or alienation – as easily as immersing yourself in a warm bath.  Or, as Tsukuru Tazaki, protagonist of Murakami’s latest novel, contemplates, ‘easier than swallowing down a slick, raw egg.’

I don’t think it would be an overstatement to say that, in terms of following, Haruki Murakami is something of a literary superstar.  Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and Years of Pilgrimage became Amazon.co.jp’s fastest selling book of 2013 – with ten thousand pre-orders within only eleven days of the publication date being announced and one million copies printed seven days after release – and was met with similar anticipation when it was published in English just over a year later.  The English edition was released in paperback in July this year, and then in August, Murakami’s English-speaking fans were rewarded with another release.  His first two novellas – Hear the Wind Sing & Pinball, 1973, originally published in 1979 & 1980 respectively – were to be published in English for the first time outside of Japan in a reversible hardback edition entitled Wind/Pinball, with an introduction written by Murakami himself, talking about the unique gestation of these, his ‘kitchen table’ novels (as in they were written, literally, at the kitchen table) and their impact on his career as a writer.

The two books, along with A Wild Sheep Chase published in 1982 (the book Murakami himself, and a lot of his fans, consider to be the true start of his writing career) comprise a loose trilogy, linked by character, known as ‘the trilogy of the Rat’ (it’s not necessary to have read the former in order to understand the latter, or vice versa, but, for those who have read A Wild Sheep Chase, Wind/Pinball will probably offer up some illuminating ‘aha’ moments), and though they may lack some of the technical and narrative proficiency of his later work, you can see in them the DNA for what would become known as a ‘Murakami novel’.

Hear the Wind Sing follows its unnamed narrator through the summer of 1970 as he spends his nights in J’s bar drinking and smoking with his friend – known only by the nickname ‘the Rat’ – and his days ruminating about writing, the women he’s slept with and pursuing a relationship with a mysterious woman with nine fingers. Pinball, 1973 takes place three years later, the narrator having moved to Tokyo, when he becomes obsessed down tracking the exact model of pinball machine that he used to play.  Meanwhile the Rat has been left behind in their hometown, despite his best efforts to leave it behind.

Both the narrator and the Rat are instantly recognisable as typical Murakami type characters.  The narrator is his male everyman protagonist: decent but often alienated and somewhat detached, which can be seen all through his work, right up to Tsukuru Tazaki, who – because he doesn’t, unlike the other members of his once close circle of friends, have a colour in his name – feels himself to be lacking substance in comparison, an empty vessel: colourless, and therefore worthless.

The Rat is charismatic and cynical, seemingly marked for trouble or tragedy, characteristics that can be seen in characters such as Kafka – titular protagonist of Kafka on the Shore – and his alter ego the boy named Crow, 1Q84’s Komatsu and Colorless Tsukuru’s Shiro (Miss White).

The female characters in Wind/Pinball are also templates for a lot (though not all) of the female characters in Murakami’s later works: they are essentially mysterious, having no proper names other than some identifying characteristic – the girl with nine fingers in Hear the Wind Sing is known only as this and the twins in Pinball, 1973 are only ever known by the numbers on their shirts, 208 & 209 – and often exert a strange magnetic influence over the male characters.  This, and the fact that Murakami isn’t shy about showing his male characters’ sexual attraction to these women – with matter-of-fact descriptions of breasts, other body parts and intercourse itself – has led him to labelled sexist by some.

Now, as a female who has never felt any of the Murakami books I’ve read to be sexist, I would like to take a moment to present my argument.  Firstly, to paraphrase Jonathan Franzen – another author often accused of sexism – in a recent Guardian interview, he ‘can’t help being a man’.  Sexual desire is, for the most part, a perfectly natural and healthy thing for men, for anyone, to express, and though he doesn’t explore female sexual desire as often, explore it he does, Aomame – the female protagonist in 1Q84 – being a prime example.

Secondly, his female characters aren’t objects, something that only has any meaning or relevance when it’s on the stage where we can see it.  Most of them do have names and they all have lives of their own, independent from the chains of narrative events their male counterparts are often a slave to – Sara, from Colorless Tsukuru, for example, works as a travel agent, and while she does all she can to help Tsukuru, it soon becomes apparent that, whilst she likes him, she doesn’t need Tsukuru the way he comes to need her.  Their mystery is the one we all know and face: the mystery of other human beings.  And yes, their lives may take place mostly off screen, but off-screen or not it is they who wield the influence – whether it be sexual, emotional or psychological – over the men, not the other way around.

Being his first, Hear the Wind Sing is, unsurpringly, the least technically accomplished of the two, with very little moving the plot forward it could almost be a series of vignettes. Pinball, 1973 is much more dynamic, with the narrator’s quest to find the three flipper spaceship pinball machine and, to a lesser extent, the Rat’s attempts to leave his girlfriend and the town, moving the story forward and providing a much more cohesively complete narrative like that of Colorless Tsukuru.  Despite this technical unevenness however, both novellas contain imagery as striking as in any of his later works – the image of the beacon on the shore in Pinball, for example, dividing the Rat’s world into the one he knows and a mysterious possibility, is just as haunting as Tsukuru’s dream in which a woman offers him her heart or her body and he is forced to choose between them.

In his introduction to Wind/Pinball Murakami mentions a Hungarian writer, Agota Kristof, who developed her unique style in a similar way to his own of initially writing everything down in his limited English and then translating, or ‘transplanting’, it back into Japanese. He describes her novels as being ‘cloaked in an air of mystery that suggested important matters hidden beneath the surface’, which is, and I’m sure most would agree with me, also a brilliant way to describe his own. And long may they continue to be so.
