Game review: Counter Strike: Global Offensive

Counter Strike: Global Offensive or CSGO is a first person shooter released on the 21st of August 2012, buy Valve. CSGO was meant to be a middle ground between Counter Strike Source and Counter Strike 1.6 and later on ended up being one of the most competitive games in the world racking up millions of views in the eSports scene. 

I started playing CS in 2015, and I still remember playing CS source on my school laptop during lunch times. On that day, I knew that I wanted to play CSGO, and later that night, I downloaded it. Funny thing is, at the time I didn’t have my own steam account and as easy it was to make one, I just purchased CSGO on my brother’s account and racked up almost 1000 hours in less than two years. I was playing this game religiously between late 2015 to late 2016, mainly only playing competitive matchmaking. Back then I didn’t have a proper gaming desktop, so I had to settle with using a Mac desktop. 

For people that enjoy shooters like COD or Battlefield, this game is nothing like it. If you actually want to win games you have to be tactical, smart and most importantly patient. I think for one that the game is easy to play, but has a massive skill curve making the game extremely hard to master. I used to practice everyday for 15 minutes before hopping into a competitive game. CSGO isn’t a game where you can just pick up and aim like Shroud, there’s spray patterns, map callouts, specific grenade positions and probably the most important one communication. 

I’m not gonna lie, back when I played the game wholeheartedly, the game was extremely toxic, it probably still is today. I still remember back when pre game, half time and post game voice chat between two teams were a thing. People would talk so much trash it was hilarious. Everyone was so salty, but that’s part of the CSGO community. The screaming, the laughing, the saltiness, it’ll never get old. All in all, even if the community is toxic, it’s what makes the game what it is today. 

Nowadays I hardly play any CSGO, compared to my “golden days” which I would play around 5 hours on a weekday, everyday after school. If you want to play a game that’s difficult to master but really rewarding when you do, then CSGO is the game. The gunplay is difficult, at times confusing but satisfying. Mechanic wise, it’s simple, game loop wise, it’s simple, learning the maps and the positioning, extremely difficult. There are days when I look back and think to myself whether I could’ve made it into the pro-scene, and then just laugh and miss every shot. This me now, washed up and in the silver.

Overwall if you were to ask me if I would recommend this extremely toxic, difficult and tedious game, yes, yes I would. As CSGO is personally one of the most memorable games and honestly, if I just kept playing the game constantly and practicing, maybe the dream of hitting the pro-scene wasn’t actually too far,
