Summary:

Sequel to another vent fic. Trans!Ryan is on his period & it is painful like the one I had while writing this. Eventually Esposito finds out. Eventually they get together. We have a little bit of a casefic involved too. When a victim is found stuffed into a clothing donation bin by a homeless trans youth, I was initially going to make it that Ryan was the only one able to get him to talk. Whoops. Esposito makes yummy food & they actually call his mom too lol. That seems like a decent summary without spoiling it...

Set during pregnancy with Lily

“Enter” Beckett called out as she heard a knock on her door.

She took a moment to finish the section of paperwork she was reading and added her signature at the bottom before looking up to give the latest visitor her full attention.

“Perlmutter?”

Beckett was a little shocked to see the medical examiner looking uncomfortable in the doorway.

She couldn’t recall any time when Perlmutter had stepped foot in the 12th in all the time she’d been here.

“What can I do for you?”

“Dr Parish informed me you were back at work,” Perlmutter shrugged. “I want to express my… my appreciation that you’ve recovered after your… ordeal.”

“Well, thank you Permutter,” Kate said, not really sure how to navigate this conversation. This was very out of character for the man in front of her, though for some reason he’d always been nicer to her than the rest of her colleagues she supposed. “I’m not really back, I’m just attending to some paperwork before my leave.”

“Yes, I’d… heard,” Perlmutter shuffled his feet a little and walked further into her office and looked at her for a moment and she watched his eyes, as most of her colleagues had today, drop to the bump. “I wanted to say congratulations, to you, and your writer. And give you this.”

She watched in shock as he pulled his hands from behind his back and placed a small stuffed bear on the table. “For the baby.”

“Oh, well, thank you Perlmutter.” She had no idea what was going on right now. This was very out of character.

“I really am pleased that you’re okay,” he told her sincerely. “And Castle. There… there are a lot of people who would have missed you greatly.”

And with that he seemed to have decided he’d said all he’d come to say and turned to leave, leaving a still shocked Beckett sitting behind her desk. She watched him through the blinds as he bumped into her husband and heard the gruff exchange as the medical examiner left and Castle came into her office.

“What did Perlmutter want?” he asked as he rounded the desk to drop a kiss to her lips and place her mug of tea in front of her.

“Lanie’s been gossiping,” Kate told him. “He bought a gift for the baby.”

“Perlmutter?”

“Yep.”

Castle looked as shocked as she’d felt, before kneeling on the floor and leaning down to whisper to his daughter. “You really are a miracle baby.”

Kate laughed.

Little Castle Moments

(that didn’t happen but I will pretend they did) 

- Castle passing out flyers that say “Vote for Senator Beckett!” (because of “Time Will Tell” predictions)

 - Ryan, Jenny and Espo waving goodbye to Sarah Grace as she walks into her first day of preschool

 - Sarah Grace calling Esposito “Uncle Javi” and never knowing who Castle and Beckett are talking about when they say “Esposito” so they start calling him “Uncle Javi” all the time too

 - Alexis trying to decide between med school and law school before finally deciding to study medicine when she how Lou Karnacki concealed evidence during the events of “Law & Murder”

 - Alexis babysitting Sarah Grace before med school completely takes over her life

 - Esposito and Ryan both quickly becoming captains of their own precincts (because the laws in the showverse allow this?)

 - Lanie and Tory going out for drinks every Saturday (idk why it just seems like they might get along?)

 - Martha saying that she will move out every year but never doing so. Eventually she finally finds a place and is about to sign the lease when she decides not too because she does not want to break her “I’ll move but I won’t” streak

 - Castle and Gates bingewatching reality TV shows seperately and then, when they see each other, one of it casually mentions it, the other one notices, and then they spend the next hour talking about it

 - Castle replacing the Gemini dolls he broke after many years of searching and calling in many favors

 - Castle and Beckett being all cheesy and fluffy and stuff around Perlmutter to annoy him

 - Ryan and Esposito stumbling around the fact that they dated for about a year before Castle came along but no one else knows (except for Jenny, and all three of them laugh about it together)

 - Beckett teasing Castle about how he should base a book off of Ryan and Espo now that she is a Senator and not a cop

 - Esposito and Jenny swapping embarrasing Ryan stories while Ryan is banging his head on the table and trying to bribe both of them to shut up

TWO BLOCKS AWAY

1921

Two Blocks Away is a play in three acts by Aaron Hoffman. The  original production was produced by Charles Dillingham and staged by Clifford Brooke. Hoffman wrote the play to showcase the talent of star Barney Bernard. 

The play is set in New York City in July. It tells the story of a generous, hardworking cobbler named Nate Pommerantz (Barney Bernard), who is a friend of everyone in his neighborhood. When he receives a windfall inheritance, he assumes the neighborhood is scheming to earn his financial favor.  The second act finds the cobbler living in solitary grandeur just “two blocks away” from his former neighborhood. There he becomes miserly and lonely. Being being a theatrical enterprise, by eleven o’clock (5 o’clock matinee days), Nate sees the error of his ways. 

Two Blocks Away had its world premiere at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City, New Jersey on May 23, 1921. From the Jersey Shore, the play went on a brief tour that included Washington DC before being placed on hold until the launch of Broadway’s fall season in late August. 

"’Two Blocks Away' takes one all the way from Second Avenue, New York, to Fifth Avenue in the same city, and back again all In one night’s story. It Is a delightful little sermon concerning wealth and poverty, pointing to the moral that wealth is really poverty and poverty wealth.” ~ ATLANTIC CITY DAILY PRESS

Typical of Hoffman’s Jewish-American humor, at one point Nate brags that his daughter is in London seeing “Westminster Abie”. Coincidentally, Hoffman’s play covered much of the same territory more popularly explored in Abie’s Irish Rose, which wouldn’t open on Broadway until May 1922.

After its brief hiatus, the play returned to Atlantic City just before it opened on Broadway. By their second visit, Atlantic City boasted a brand new luxury hotel: The Ritz-Carlton. 

The play finally opened on Broadway on the penultimate day of August 1921. Despite good reviews from the road, the play only ran 47 performances at George M. Cohan’s Theatre on West 43rd Street. Naturally, all eyes were on its well-known star, Barney Bernard. 

The report mis-identifies the artist as Herman Rockwell, when it was in fact Norman Rockwell, who had not yet achieved the level of success he would experience in the 1940s and ‘50s.  

Above is the Rockwell image that captured Bernard’s vision of what his Nathaniel Pommerantz should look like. 

Bernard was well-known by playgoers for his portrayal of Abe Potash in Potash and Perlmutter (1913), which ran 440 performances and inspired three sequels, all starring Bernard. In 1914, Bernard had been in Atlantic City with Potash and Perlmutter. After his brief run of Two Blocks Away, Bernard returned to the familiar and played Potash on Broadway one last time. 

Bernard got to recreate his most famous character on screen in 1923′s Potash and Perlmutter. Bernard died in March 1924 while preparing to film the sequel In Hollywood with Potash and Perlmutter. Actor George Sidney was brought in to play Potash opposite Carr’s Perlmutter.  

In 1925, Universal Studios bought the rights to Two Blocks Away, and radically changed it into a comic conflict between a Jewish family headed by Jacob Cohen and an Irish family helmed by Patrick Kelly. Because Bernard was not alive to recreate his role (or what it became), his Potash replacement George Sidney was hired. The first film premiered in 1926 as The Cohens and the Kellys. Five more films followed with The Cohens and Kellys in... Paris (1928),

Atlantic City (1929), Scotland (1930), Africa (1930), Hollywood (1932) and Trouble (1934). 

The film was made on both coasts. The outdoor sequences were done in New Jersey, and the indoor sequences (with sound) were done in California. In connection with the filming, the production staged a beauty contest in the style of the newly created Miss America Pageant called ‘The Summer Girl’ Contest. Elsie Allen, an Atlantic City high school girl, won - and her prize was a contract with Universal Studios.  

The films are best remembered today as the subject of a landmark three million dollar lawsuit. Anne Nichols, playwright of Abie’s Irish Rose, who sued those involved with the Cohen and Kelly series on the grounds that they appropriated her proprietary characters. The Judge ruled that stock characters cannot be held under copyright. 

So... a short-lived 1921 play that premiered in Atlantic City, returned to Atlantic City, was now an unrecognizable film set in Atlantic City that likely was seen in Atlantic City cinemas! That’s life on the Boardwalk.
