Summary:

Ryan & Esposito have accidentally adopted an adolescent but they need to find a new apartment to house the three of them. Whoopsie-daisy there is a dead body. Well lucky for them it ensures that nobody else wants the apartment. Hooray. No spoilers, but this takes place in early seasons ig. Alexis is still in high school. Inspiration from 5x11 under the influence (the joey malone episode) mostly for apartment layout & the fact that Esposito has proven to do that sort of thing before, but that Dad!Esposito idea also comes from 2x21 den of thieves (the ike thornton episode). Not much inspiration from 5x18 the wild rover (the fenton o'connell episode) bc we didn't see much of his apartment there. Also some inspiration from 3x10 last call (the old haunt episode). However, I repeat: there are no spoilers, at least no real spoilers.

Imagine this:

It starts with Bobby John. Dean can't let the baby go, he reminds him too much of Sam, way back when Sam was this age, and Daddy was always sad (or drunk), and when Dean tried to speak the words got stuck, and he could not make a sound. He can't let the baby go, so he doesn't.

Over time, they gather more. Bobby John, Ben, Joe and Ryan, Emma, Alex, Krissy and Aiden and Josephine, Magda, Claire, Jack. They find Jesse again, 16 years old and alone and scared of himself. They find Charlie and Kevin, and even though they aren't quite their kids, they treat them with the same care.

Somewhere in between the always rising tide of children, they find the Bunker. It's perfect - dozens of rooms for everyone to spread out, to have their own space. Bobby doesn't die, but he does move to the bunker "To keep an eye on ya' idjits,”. The modifications they make to the Bunker for his wheelchair are worth it to see the pride in his eyes. Linda Tran moves in, and she and Dean have an ongoing war over who's in control of the kitchen.

Of course, things aren't perfect. Chuck is still a problem, and eventually he must be dealt with. They win, but the cost is heavy. Cas and Jack are gone, and Dean... well he's as good as gone. He never leaves his room anymore, except to get a drink. Their dysfunctional family is mourning, both for those who they've lost and for themselves. Disappearing and coming back is much more traumatic than you'd expect.

Eventually, in an attempt to cheer him up, they convince him to go on a hunt. Just a small thing, a nest of vamps. They've killed a man and mutilated his wife, as well as taken their kids, two small boys. Someone (later, no one will remember exactly who) jokes that they can take in the boys. Sam and Dean leave, looking more cheerful than they’ve been in weeks.

They get the call a few hours later. Sam tells them over the phone, barely understandable through his tears, that Dean was hurt in the fight and that the doctors aren’t sure if he’ll pull through. Using the variety of cars in the bunker, they break a handful of laws and probably the sound barrier on their way to the hospital. Bobby pulls Sam aside and he explains, in detail, what happened. They wait for hours before a doctor finally enters the waiting room, asking for the family of Dean Fletcher* (Millie Winchester’s maiden name).

Dean survives, barely. Recovery is an uphill battle, and the damage done to his spine, muscles, and nerves leave him wheelchair-bound and in near-constant pain. Eventually, he’s able to move around for short periods of time using forearm crutches and leg braces, but it’s only after a few years and a lot of physical therapy. At the very least, the Bunker needs no new changes to accommodate him, having been updated for Bobby ages ago.

A year passes. The two boys from the vamp hunt are moved into the Bunker after their mother succumbs to her injuries in the hospital, and quickly adjust and thrive in the new location. Sam and Eileen quit hunting, permanently. They move to town, only fifteen minutes away, and visit every Saturday for family dinner. When they get married, Sam Winchester becomes Sam Leahy. Jody retires, and moves her hoard to the Bunker. They’ve got the room, after all. Donna follows not too long after. Miracle is officially trained as a service animal, to help Dean with his panic attacks.

One night, Dean can’t sleep. He hauls himself into his wheelchair and goes to the kitchen for a glass of water. He stops at the sight of three people sitting at the table.

The reunion is a tearful one. Dean cries from relief, and guilt, and of course the burning pain that rips through his back as a result of him temporarily forgetting he can’t stand and launching himself out of his chair. Cas also cries, sobbing apologies into Dean’s hair from where they are curled on the floor. Jack, pressed between the two of them and both overwhelmed and overstimulated, can only beg for Dean’s forgiveness. His dads wipe away his tears and press kisses to his cheeks, assuring him that he has nothing to apologize for.

The only one who doesn’t cry is Adam, sitting slightly stony faced at the table. Later, once the commotion of the reunion has died and Sam has been woken and summoned to the Bunker, the three sit down to chat.

Adam tells them that he’s not angry anymore, and begs them to explain everything to him, starting from the beginning. He is especially curious about their father, and realizes through their stories that John badly mistreated them. Dean invites Adam to stay in the Bunker, but Adam declines. He says that there’s a lot he needs to do, but hesitantly suggests that they stay in touch. Their relationship is tentative at first, but eventually he becomes a permanent fixture in the family.

Cas and Jack are filled in on what they missed. Dean pulls them each aside and apologizes privately for the things he said and did before the end. He assures Jack that he is part of the family, and always will be. He tells him he’s willing to be Jack’s dad, if that’s what Jack wants. Jack enthusiastically agrees.

He can’t quite bring himself to say “I love you” to Cas, but he says something along the lines of “maybe one day.” He also implies to Cas that John was extremely homophobic, and the combination of that and the sexual trauma he has experienced through his life (getting money for food/rent as a teen, Hell, Lydia) makes him hesitant now to form romantic relationships. Cas, understanding as always, agrees and comments on how he has improved at opening up, to which Dean replies that there wasn’t much else to do when he was trapped in bed and couldn’t escape Sam and his relentless therapy-talks.

Jack tells them as a group that he has decided there doesn’t need to be a God, and has stepped down after reforming Heaven. He says that he used his power for the last time to bring back Castile and find Adam. He confesses to his parents that the power is not gone, and likely never will be. He also says that he would like to grow up as human as possible, and promptly shrinks to the size of a toddler, much to the bewildered amusement of his parents. They discover that he no longer has his memories, and Bobby suggests that they may come back when he’s older, and that forgetting is his young mind's way of protecting itself.

As time passes, Cas and Dean open the Bunker to other hunters as a research facility and safe space to stay for a few nights. Neither of them hunt anymore, but they offer support and badly needed organization. With Charlie and Kevin’s help, they set up a system like the one Sam originally had.

When Eileen and Sam announce they are expecting, Dean is ecstatic. When they reveal the baby is a boy and that they are naming him “Dean II”, he cries for a solid hour. He’s the first, outside of Sam and Eileen, to hold the baby, who he affectionately nicknames “Junior”.

In the end, they are happy. They live together peacefully.

Also, I cannot take complete credit for this story. Quite a few elements are inspired by foolondahill17’s stories, Dean Winchester’s half-way house for orphaned half-monsters (and humans), and the miracles ‘verse by the same author. Both are absolutely amazing stories, and I highly recommend.

In February 2024, transgender teenager Nex Benedict was pronounced dead one day after a fight with three other students in their high school bathroom. Though Benedict’s death was officially ruled a suicide weeks later, national TV news contextualized the story within an increasingly hostile culture for trans people.

Beyond the scope of Benedict’s death — which received 85 minutes of total coverage across broadcast and cable news outlets — fatal violence against transgender Americans was covered for only 3 minutes throughout 2024.

Key findings

Nex Benedict’s death received 85 minutes of total coverage spanning 30 segments and 17 teasers or mentions across the three major cable news channels (CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC) and broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS) in 2024.

MSNBC aired the most coverage of Benedict’s death among cable news networks, with 34 minutes across 8 full segments and 8 teasers or mentions. CNN trailed behind with 23 minutes across 6 segments and 5 teasers or mentions. Fox News, with consistently low coverage of anti-transgender violence, featured only 10 minutes of coverage spanning 3 segments and 1 teaser.

Broadcast coverage of Benedict was scarce: PBS and CBS led with 6 minutes of coverage each, while NBC and ABC produced only 3 minutes of coverage each.

Montana state Rep. Zooey Zephyr and Asher Aven from the Trans Advocacy Coalition of Oklahoma were the only trans or gender-nonconforming guests across all coverage of Benedict’s death on broadcast and cable news in 2024.

More than half of all studied segments (16 of 30) contextualized Benedict’s death amid ongoing rhetorical and legislative attacks on transgender people.

At least 13 segments specifically named right-wing figures such as Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters and “Libs of TikTok” creator Chaya Raichik for their part in fostering a culture of anti-LGBTQ animus.

Walters appeared in two segments — both on Fox News — where he denied right-wing bigotry was a cultural factor that contributed to Benedict’s death.

At least 43% of segments called out right-wing figures by name for the real world impacts of their anti-trans agenda

Right-wing media’s anti-trans culture war has fostered numerous threats of violence. Anti-LGBTQ extremist Chaya Raichik — known for running the “Libs of TikTok” account online — often sets up the targets for such threats. Following Libs of TikTok’s online harassment campaign against Planet Fitness in 2024, at least 53 locations across the country received violent threats, and 38 other confirmed institutions, events, and individuals faced threats and harassment after being targeted by her account from 2022-2024. Right-wing media have fueled a rash of harassment, with anti-LGBTQ campaigns against Bud Light and Target materializing into violent threats as well. [Media Matters, 4/5/24, 11/2/23; Forbes, 6/1/23]

Oklahoma has been a hotbed for anti-LGBTQ legislation. Oklahoma was billed “the worst state” for anti-LGBTQ legislation last year, introducing 59 such bills by the beginning of February 2024. The state has already introduced 32 anti-trans bills so far this year, adding to the 114 proposed since 2022. [Reckon, 2/1/24; Trans Legislation Tracker, accessed 4/22/25, 2024, 2023, 2022]

State Superintendent Ryan Walters has used his office to partner with right-wing media pundits. Walters, once considered a potential nominee to lead the U.S. Department of Education, has allowed right-wing media figures — including Dennis Prager and Project 2025 architect Kevin Roberts — to write curriculum for Oklahoma schools. Weeks before Benedict’s death, Walters appointed Raichik to Oklahoma’s library board. [The Hill, 11/12/24; Media Matters, 10/6/23, 7/10/24; Oklahoma.gov, 1/23/24]

At least 13 segments on Benedict’s death held specific right-wing figures in media and government accountable. Guests and reporters alike named Walters, Libs of TikTok, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, and Republican state Sen. Tom Woods as chief instigators of anti-trans rhetoric. The governor was named for his role in signing anti-transgender laws in the state, and a segment on MSNBC’s The ReidOut made a reference to his claim that “gender ideology … is eroding the very foundation of our society.” Woods received scrutiny for calling the LGBTQ community “filth” following Benedict’s death. [MSNBC, The ReidOut, 2/21/24; Fox News, 8/1/23; CNN, CNN News Central, 2/26/24, 2/23/24]

After the suicide death of trans teen Nex Benedict, mainstream cable and broadcast news coverage held accountable the anti-LGBTQ+ influencers (such as Ryan Walters and Chaya Raichik) that helped fan the flames for Benedict’s death.

I think he'd be very confused he'd say it's an okay movie but it made his skin crawl it was unnerving and he didn’t know how to describe the way it made him feel. Eventually the trans meaning is explained to him and he's just like "oh okay" and then he has to sit down awhile.

Jim Halpert:

If I live in my hc world where I hc transmasc Jim I definitely think it would effect him, he'd take a sick day and spend some extra time with his kids, hoping they never feel they have to suppress themselves like he did for so long. (In my hc he doesn't transition until his 20s)

Kevin Malone:

Kevin would watch it with Oscar because he didn't want to watch it alone and it confuses him. When they leave the cinema he asks Oscar what everything meant and Oscar being who he is obviously knew what the movie was about told Kevin and I think he had to rewatch the movie and when he did it like hit woah... that's me. Ryan Howard:

He would not admit it but it deeply hurt him he watched it with Kelly and ended up crying in her arms afterwards.

I think she wouldn't really understand it but seeing peoples reactions to it both in person and online would make her feel happy that it exists. She likes that trans people can be seen she understands it wasn't made for her but appreciates it none the less.

He understood it, he's definitely a harsh critic though he read a lot of reviews prior to the movie and he acknowledges it's impact for the trans community but didn't find it interesting and compares it to Donnie darko (which is not a bad thing to me okay Dwight is a hater! I like donnie darko)

Summary:

Sequel to another vent fic. Trans!Ryan is on his period & it is painful like the one I had while writing this. Eventually Esposito finds out. Eventually they get together. We have a little bit of a casefic involved too. When a victim is found stuffed into a clothing donation bin by a homeless trans youth, I was initially going to make it that Ryan was the only one able to get him to talk. Whoops. Esposito makes yummy food & they actually call his mom too lol. That seems like a decent summary without spoiling it...

I miss how anarchist groups were comprised of such solidarity between trans and indigenous folks because of how few Oklahomans have a damn about our respective issues. The solidarity and embrace of intersectionality in a state so hostile to leftist action is something I miss so much. There were so few of us, and it was so hard to keep up morale knowing we were shouting into a void, but putting up a show that we weren’t going to submit easily even with the odds stacked against us though they were. Even should we fail, there was a peace that came with accepting that we might see the fruits of our labor in our lifetimes

The Oklahoma government has quite the history of brutalizing trans and indigenous folk and counting on nobody caring enough to worry about covering their tracks, don’t let Kevin Stitt, Chaya Raichik, Ryan Walters, or any of those devils feel peace for how they continue to force queers out of the state under threat of death, and do not forget the inhumanity of those who continue to wreak havoc upon the tribes who were forcibly relocated to the state in the first place. Fucking robbed of their ancestral lands and given tiny slices of land in a state so undesirable it was considered no man’s land. And even then, the state of Oklahoma isnt content to let the cultures the tourist board endlessly commodifies have even the slightest of good things. The OKGOV is hungry. They want a slice of the consolation prize and now they get to squeal with glee that they got away with the murder of a member of the Choctaw Nation and the Queer community in one go.

Righty, Graphic novel reccomendations:

Snapdragon by Kat Leyh (about witches, ghosts, bones, ect. One of the title ideas was 'the roadkill witch' and that sums it up pretty well)

Mamo by Sas Milledge (about hedge witches, curses, a lil bit of generational trauma, and a dope magic system. The art is gorgeous, its probably my top reccomendation for anything ever)

Lightfall by Tim Probert (a fantasy world where the sun is gone and the world is kept bright by floating lights. It has an amazng way of portraying anxiety and panic attacks in its main character)

Diesel: Ignition by Tyson Hesse (a steampunky thing with flying ships about found family with undertones of war, and societal divide)

This Was Our Pact by Ryan Andrews (about two boys on a cycle ride at night who experience all sorts impossible things)

Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan (sci fi and supernatural stuff in a suburban neighbourhood focusing around four papergirls in 1988)

Lumberjanes by alot of people actually (an all girls summer camp with all sorts of cryptids, greek gods, supernatural beings, curses, and magic stuff in the achres of forest surrounding it)

Nimona by ND Stevenson (most people know the recent movie but the graphic novel is really good too, with alot of angsty stuff and also found family moments :D)

The Backstagers by also alot of people (the backstage areas of a high school theatre filled with all sorts of cryptid and magic nonsense, also good queer and trans characters)

Galaxy, The Prettiest Star by Jadzia Axelrod and Jess Taylor (a giant metaphor for being trans about an alien girl stuck in a human boys body, with all sorts of relateable experiences and also the most gorgeous art ever in the world ever)

Bloom by Kevin Panetta and Savanna Ganucheau (two guys working in the same bakery falling in love, with actually very real representation of how relationships may go)

Squire by Sara Alfageeh and Nadia Shammas (people training to be knights with gorgeous art and amazing colours)

Martian Ghost Centaur by Mat Heagerty and Steph Mided (a small town that used to be famous for sasquatch sightings being bought out by a big company, and the girl trying to stop it)

Summary:

Ryan finally comes home after the events of 5x18. In the show it seemed like Ryan was only gone for, like, two days, but in my fic I wrote it more like a week. He has been wearing his binder for too long & Esposito gets concerned, but they have been up all night since Ryan called Esposito on Liam's phone that night on the docks, so they are just going to take a little rest. Fluff.
