Dev Pile 2025-10 — Instructions
Rules are magic. Rules are a way for you to to put words on paper, and then, without any involvement from you beyond the words you put on that paper, another person can come along, read that paper, and play a game that they did not know existed before you put those words on that paper.
Rules are also incredibly hard and it sucks to write them and it sucks to read them.
An Exercise: What games can you fully explain the rules to? If you’re a game designer, how much of your rules of something you’ve made can you explain, easily and coherently, to another human being such that they can play your game?
If you’re talking about a videogame, try and explain the instructions for interacting with the game. The interface can be very complex for games, but the fundamental instructions of what a player is doing, and how they should progress through the game, that should be explicable. Even if only in broad genre terms, such as ‘it’s a platformer where you head to the right.’
If you’re talking about a game of pools like Magic: The Gathering, the fundamental instructions is almost like a folk game. You have a basic set of steps that you can go through, and then when the game pieces introduce new rules information, you address that. You address it one piece at a time, and those pieces are all part of a very large, very complicated archive of information.
What if we’re talking about a much simpler game, like Poker? Poker has a set number of hands and rules for just following the patterns of player behaviour. Not ‘how would you teach someone to play poker well,’ but rather, ‘can you explain a set of rules for one specific form of poker from start of the game to the end?’
You might think ‘hey, Poker isn’t that simple.’ It depends on what you mean, though. Poker, the game of hands and cards and betting and showdowns is reasonably simple as a set of instructions. The values of the hands are complicated, but only in that they’re not obvious until you’ve mastered them. Playing poker well, and working out the emergent properties of poker, like signalling and defending ranges, those are things that aren’t obvious until you play, and they’re also skills that form a sort of inner club. Defending your ranges is something that will serve you well against less skilled players, over time, but in any given hand, it’s not fundamentally relevant the way ‘players get five cards’ or ‘there are three community cards are.’
Now, the point of this exercise is to get you in the mindset of thinking about not just what kind of rules you can explain but how you explain them. Game rules, expressed in the game you share, are going to be explained in a particular way, and that language is itself, part of the game, and part of how they communicate. You can convey that one and one is two, and you can present 1+1=2, and you can even do that as one plus one equals two, but each of those comes with different language benefits. Highly technical, mathmatically concise language is going to benefit game designs where the game has to make adjudications quickly and decisively, for example. Magic: The Gathering has several rules defining just the basic idea of ‘the turn’ and ‘this’ and ‘target,’ all terms with seemingly obvious meanings that the rules need to very technically adjudicate.
When you know how to communicate in your rules, you get to start using the game language to pre-load player behaviour. If you can talk to players clearly in one language, you can lie to them in it.
Heck, not even lie – cajole. Mislead. Obfuscate.
Consider a Warhammer army with a special ability that says you do minimum damage when you roll a 6 and get maximum damage on a 1. This is a simplified version of a rule that exists: by flipping two numbers’ results, statistically, you’ve changed nothing, but you’ve created a technical piece of rules information that a player can relate to when they ‘feel’ unlucky. It’s just raw stats – there’s no way for a flip of two digits like that to make a mathematical difference without other interactions – but the way it’s framed can make a player feel like they’re getting something when they’re not. This is a way you can create an impression of a rules space without the specifics of it. In an army-based game like Warhammer 40,000, there are a host of factors that are involved in balancing an army, and sometimes there are things that are there to feel good that aren’t meaningfully good, because the rest of the balance is being handled over there, in math-land.
Mark Rosewater calls this kind of thing trinket text on a Magic card. Where a card has some small rules concession on it that makes a card feel less empty even if it’s not mechanically relevant.
Alright while I distracted you, can you do those instructions again?
How different are they to last time? Did you find something you’d rather do differently?
Instructions are both a very technical thing to do, a set of proceses for a complex operation, but they are also an empathic experience. You need to think about the person reading them as if they are a person, but also, as if they then need to explain those rules to another person, and the way they will explain them being easier to say than it is to put on a page in the way you might if, say, you were doing technical documentation. This can get as nitty gritty as considering whether or not game language you’re using is phonetically varied, so players can’t mix up spoken language terms easily. You may love a pun but if the pun makes it hard for people to play your game, or worse, recruit others to play your game, it’s got to go.
I’ve said it before: Writing instructions to a game is like programming a random stranger, and there’s no way to know if it won’t compile.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

To the Cabal & Those Of Baal Worship
Do you want to know a secret?
- Remember the good ole days when someone had to be wired to gather information for a sting operation?
- Remember how someone would be searched before they entered a high security area for secret meetings you didn't want recorded on record?
- Remember when you could ensure that if someone would speak of what went on you had a way to get rid of them?
I want you to think of a hypothetical technology for second. Let's call it "Bio-Sensory Neural Interface" or "Energetic Biofield Interface" (EBI)
What can this technology achieve?
• The Bio-Sensory Neural Interface (BSNI) technology represents intelligence-gathering methodologies. It leverages the interaction between advanced computational systems and the human energetic biofield to facilitate seamless, real-time communication and data acquisition from human sensory experiences.
• Utilizes sophisticated sensors to interact with the human biofield, capturing and interpreting electromagnetic signals naturally emitted by the body.
• Enables non-invasive interfacing, ensuring the integrity and operational security of the actor.
Real-Time Sensory Data Transmission:
• Converts sensory input (visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile) into digital data streams, allowing remote operators to experience the actor's environment firsthand.
• Acts as a live sensory transceiver, making the human body a dynamic tool for intelligence collection.
Cognitive Communication:
• Facilitates direct, silent communication between the operator and the actor through thought transmission, eliminating the need for spoken words or physical devices.
• Supports bidirectional communication, enabling strategic planning and real-time adjustments through inner dialogue.
What does this basically mean in more mundane terms?
This basically eliminates the need for physical implants or external devices, reducing the risk of detection and enhancing the safety of the operative in sensitive environments. Which means you could never detect any infiltration apparatus. You could never know who is working for the good guys.
This is one reason why your plans never pan out. This is why you can never quite nail down why something didn't go as planned. This is why you can never trace or track how certain info was shared to those who were never invited to your secret clandestine meetings.
You think because you hold them while a major celebrity is performing in town that the powerful political figures attending would fly under the radar because everyone is distracted with Taylor Swift? You are some funny guys.
BSNI technology is ideally suited for intelligence operations requiring high levels of discretion and security. Its applications extend to military intelligence, covert operations, and high-stakes negotiations where traditional intelligence methods may be impractical or too intrusive. And please avoid trying to look up this technology. This is not what it is called.
This is Mind-to-Mind technology. You all have been caught with your pants down. And now you are way too far behind to catch up to how this could have possibly been used against you. Now you are scrambling. Trying to wonder how you have had to resort to outright assassination attempts. Something that wasn't on the cards before you 1st tried years ago.
Oh' well. You lose. Off to G¡tmo you go. Pain-(☠️) is in your future.

TITLE DROP MOMENT !!!!
(pages 82 + 307)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today's page HIT, because there's nothing I love more than when stories have patterns and structures, and getting the Rose/Act 2 equivalent of the title card in act 1 is a great example of that. The flash animations aren't beat for beat identical, but they hit almost all the same moments - main character gazing at the sky despite obstruction (beaglepuss, blinding rain), view of what they see in the sky, slow zoom out as main character gets smaller and smaller, exterior shot of character's house.
Rose's flash feels a little more complex and detailed with its storm and meteorite effects and increased shading on the clouds and house, which is probably the author getting more confident with the medium. John gets to see the 'Homestuck' pixel clouds in the sky - which I do think are literally there, because they're not depicted as a computer interface the way every other abstraction is - while Rose doesn't. It could be obscured by clouds, but as the word has been so specifically and uniquely associated with John (despite Rose also being stuck at home) I think that's something that's specifically above his house, just for him.
Wind skims the voids keeping neighbors apart, as if grazing the hollow of a cut reed, or say, a plundered mailbox. A familiar note is produced. It's the one Desolation plays to keep its instrument in tune. (p.82)
Somewhere a zealous god threads these strings between the clouds and the earth, preparing for a symphony it fears impossible to play. And so it threads on, and on, delaying the raise of the conductor's baton. (p.307)
The music imagery in these descriptions and in the act titles is very compelling, especially combined with John and Rose both being gifted musicians. If I'm not mistaken, a piano can be made with reeds that are struck when the keys are pressed, while a violin has strings - so their paragraphs refer to their chosen instruments.
They also fit together really nicely. From Wikipedia:
In some choral works, the conductor may signal to a pianist or organist to play a note or chord so that the choir members can determine their starting notes. Then the conductor gives one or more preparatory beats to commence the music...The beat of the music is typically indicated with the conductor's right hand, with or without a baton.
So the 'note desolation plays' is the one the pianist plays to determine starting notes, and the 'raise of the conductor's baton' is the preparatory beat. John, the piano player, is coded as Desolation, not just someone who is experiencing depression but is actually embodying it, while I think there's an argument for Rose as either the conductor or the zealous god threading the strings? I'm interested in if there will be a moment that feels like the currently delayed 'raise of the conductor's baton' for the story, because if it wasn't the meteor impact at the end of act 1, then what could it be?
I also can't wait for an act 3 equivalent of this. If John successfully convinces TG to be Rose's server player, maybe TG will get his own atmospheric musings and role to play in the symphony. Then again, as far as we know he's not a talented instrumentalist, he's a shitty rapper, so maybe the vibe will be completely different. (As for GG in act 4, I think they play the harmonica).
what does it mean when the characters gaze up at the sky
Rose and John both have misattributed quotes on their pages - Rose's claims to be Charles Barkley, but is actually T.S. Eliot (easy mistake). Both their quotes have strong nature imagery - John's mentions wind and flame, Rose's, plants and rain - and both quotes relate to life/death or proliferation/destruction dichotomies, as well as intense emotions - John's mentions passion and Rose's, desire. Could be some Themes being snuck in here.
There's also a lot of Themes in John and Rose gazing up at their respective skies. It feels like them fully comprehending their situations for the first time, a moment of clarity where they're literally opening their eyes, and seeing a world much bigger and fuller than the ones inside their house. The sky is a vast expanse of unknowns, something not easily traversable by humans without mechanical aids, it's where the gods and the heavens are rumored to be and, for some people, the place they'd like their souls to go after death. Gazing open eyed into the weight of all that at once while the end of the world looms overhead is definitely powerful.
As such, I like that this page came out by itself, and I get to sit with it for a day. Page 82 was quickly followed up by 'Leave a surprise for the mailman' which, firstly, we all need to respect our mail carriers, but secondly is a huge tone shift. That's not bad in itself but I'm glad for the comic to let itself be earnest for a moment before that happens.
I haven't double checked, but this might be our first zoom out on Rose's house, and it's even wilder than I imagined? Entire floors held up on stilts, windows as wide as the walls, a giant waterfall in the basement, three or four different wings plus the observatory tower, and a fucking platform with no safety rails leading across the rocky cliffs? This place is not safe for kids and it definitely isn't up to any kind of code. No wonder Rose expected John to walk across such a narrow bridge to retrieve his dad's PDA. She literally does that every day on the way to school. Also, her mom doesn't have a car despite living in a rural area, and the mausoleum is SO far from the house. What, is someone scared of being haunted by the ghost of a dead cat?

Last Monday of the Week 2025-03-17
We're so left
Listening: I don't follow Grime Stone Records on bandcamp because they put up like one million albums a month and that means I missed the new album from Curta'n Wall, YR GWYDDBWYLL
You simply have to hand it to Abysmal Specter he can really get the team together.
Reading: I started in on Against a Dark Background by Iain M. Banks, because I saw an excerpt from it on my fortune(1) file and I had to know more. Actually let me just get that sample so you can experience what I did:
"Good afternoon, madam. How may I help you?" "Good afternoon. I'd like a FrintArms HandCannon, please." "A--? Oh, now, that's an awfully big gun for such a lovely lady. I mean, not everybody thinks ladies should carry guns at all, though I say they have a right to. But I think… I might… Let's have a look down here. I might have just the thing for you. Yes, here we are! Look at that, isn't it neat? Now that is a FrintArms product as well, but it's what's called a laser -- a light-pistol some people call them. Very small, as you see; fits easily into a pocket or bag; won't spoil the line of a jacket; and you won't feel you're lugging half a tonne of iron around with you. We do a range of matching accessories, including -- if I may say so -- a rather saucy garter holster. Wish I got to do the fitting for that! Ha -- just my little joke. And there's even… here we are -- this special presentation pack: gun, charged battery, charging unit, beautiful glider-hide shoulder holster with adjustable fitting and contrast stitching, and a discount on your next battery. Full instructions, of course, and a voucher for free lessons at your local gun club or range. Or there's the special presentation pack; it has all the other one's got but with two charged batteries and a night-sight, too. Here, feel that -- don't worry, it's a dummy battery -- isn't it neat? Feel how light it is? Smooth, see? No bits to stick out and catch on your clothes, and beautifully balanced. And of course the beauty of a laser is, there's no recoil. Because it's shooting light, you see? Beautiful gun, beautiful gun; my wife has one. Really. That's not a line, she really has. Now, I can do you that one -- with a battery and a free charge -- for ninety-five; or the presentation pack on a special offer for one-nineteen; or this, the special presentation pack, for one-forty-nine." "I'll take the special." "Sound choice, madam, sound choice. Now, do--?" "And a HandCannon, with the eighty-mill silencer, five GP clips, three six-five AP/wire-flechettes clips, two bipropellant HE clips, and a Special Projectile Pack if you have one -- the one with the embedding rounds, not the signalers. I assume the night-sight on this toy is compatible?" "Aah… yes, And how does madam wish to pay?" She slapped her credit card on the counter. "Eventually."
There is a little "sci-fi author writing women" here but it is also Mr. Banks so you know he's clearing the bar most of the time. Our protagonist is Sharrow, a minor noble of dubious reputation who has to recover a lost artifact to avoid getting hunted to death by a strange religious order.
When you think Banks you think Culture and this is Not At All Culture. The Culture novels are, if not serious, somewhat self-serious and contemplative. This one is not. He has the range! Sharrow is something of a Doomguy-style protagonist whose primary means of interacting with things is hitting them and I love this for her.
This book luxuriates in doing long lists of stupid shit to build the world, like a half a page naming the types of autonomous authorities controlling land on the planet. I am having a great time.
Watching: Nothing really.
Playing: A few! First up, Skin Deep, the demo of the upcoming Blendo game.
youtube
I have been looking forward to this forever and it's going to be so good. Blendo has a great knack for both environmental storytelling and making very quirky and obnoxious interface modes work well. If you haven't played Quadrilateral Cowboy you really should.
In Skin Deep you are a deep space insurance commando, who lives in cryosleep hidden aboard interstellar ships, to be defrosted when pirates board the vessel so you can reduce the insurance payout by rescuing the crew and their cargo.
It's basically an immersive sim, but with characteristic Blendo quirkiness. You can crawl around sneaking up on enemies, whacking them with objects, and taking them out. If you break open a washing machine, a layer of soap on the floor will make anyone who walks through it fall over. If you come through the garbage chute you'll smell and give away your position, but also falling in soap will clean you up! If you're crawling through vents dust buildup will eventually make you sneeze.
Another game from Next Fest, Wheel World, a bicycle open world racer. It's a very Annapurna game. The demo is out on Steam, you can check it out!
youtube
I have enjoyed playing a lot of Descenders so this caught my eye, I like Moving Fast in video games and this seems like it might scratch that itch.
You have come into possession of a haunted bike that is basically Charon's Boat But A Bike, except it's been stripped of its holy parts and torn down to junk. You adventure through the world racing other people to earn parts and upgrade your bike.
It seems good! Movement is smooth and obvious, different bike builds feel noticeably different, and I feel like the writing will be fine, if not exceptional. We'll see! It's only a demo.
Lastly, Balatro and Slay the Spire, which I got into because I accidentally got a friend into them and I've felt bad that I don't even play them. They're good! Up to like Ante 5 in Balatro and cleared the first boss in Slay the Spire. Nice games for the Legion Go's touchscreen.
Making: Sewing on pillow project, I keep on putting it off because I'm nervous about silk.
More 3D printing for the handheld.
Printed off my test photos for decorating The Thicket, I need to set aside some time to go to Ikea and look at their frame options and decide if I want that or something else.
Tools and Equipment: Lactase pills can really just solve your lactose intolerance temporarily. I felt like making a big mac and cheese style thing which really fucked me up day one but I ordered in a bottle of lactase and I have had zero problems.

Secure person frets about modern security
(...)
Internet of Things. More like @internetofshit. Whenever possible, avoid "smart" devices, which are essentially incredibly insecure, internet-connected computers that gather tons of data, get hacked all the time, and that people willingly place into their homes. These things have microphones, and they routinely send data back to the mothership for analytics and to "improve customer experience" lol ok.
As an example, in my younger and naive years I once purchased a CO2 monitor from China that demanded to know everything about me and my precise physical location before it would tell me the amount of CO2 in my room. These devices are a huge and very common attack surface on your privacy and security and should be avoided.
Messaging. I recommend Signal instead of text messages because it end-to-end encrypts all your communications. In addition, it does not store metadata like many other apps do (e.g. iMessage, WhatsApp). Turn on disappearing messages (e.g. 90 days default is good). In my experience they are an information vulnerability with no significant upside.
Browser. I recommend Brave browser, which is a privacy-first browser based on Chromium. That means that basically all Chrome extensions work out of the box and the browser feels like Chrome, but without Google having front row seats to your entire digital life.
Search engine. I recommend Brave search, which you can set up as your default in the browser settings. Brave Search is a privacy-first search engine with its own index, unlike e.g. Duck Duck Go which basically a nice skin for Bing, and is forced into weird partnerships with Microsoft that compromise user privacy. As with all services on this list, I pay $3/mo for Brave Premium because I prefer to be the customer, not the product in my digital life. I find that empirically, about 95% of my search engine queries are super simple website lookups, with the search engine basically acting as a tiny DNS. And if you're not finding what you're looking for, fallback to Google by just prepending "!g" to your search query, which will redirect it to Google.
Credit cards. Mint new, unique credit cards per merchant. There is no need to use one credit card on many services. This allows them to "link up" your purchasing across different services, and additionally it opens you up to credit card fraud because the services might leak your credit card number. I like and use privacy dot com to mint new credit cards for every single transaction or merchant. You get a nice interface for all your spending and notifications for each swipe. You can also set limits on each credit card (e.g. $50/month etc.), which dramatically decreases the risk of being charged more than you expect. Additionally, with a privacy dot com card you get to enter totally random information for your name and address when filling out billing information. This is huge, because there is simply no need and totally crazy that random internet merchants should be given your physical address. Which brings me to...
Address. There is no need to give out your physical address to the majority of random services and merchants on the internet. Use a virtual mail service. I currently use Earth Class Mail but tbh I'm a bit embarrassed by that and I'm looking to switch to Virtual Post Mail due to its much strong commitments to privacy, security, and its ownership structure and reputation. In any case, you get an address you can give out, they receive your mail, they scan it and digitize it, they have an app for you to quickly see it, and you can decide what to do with it (e.g. shred, forward, etc.). Not only do you gain security and privacy but also quite a bit of convenience.
Email. I still use gmail just due to sheer convenience, but I've started to partially use Proton Mail as well. And while we're on email, a few more thoughts. Never click on any link inside any email you receive. Email addresses are extremely easy to spoof and you can never be guaranteed that the email you got is a phishing email from a scammer. Instead, I manually navigate to any service of interest and log in from there. In addition, disable image loading by default in your email's settings. If you get an email that requires you to see images, you can click on "show images" to see them and it's not a big deal at all. This is important because many services use embedded images to track you - they hide information inside the image URL you get, so when your email client loads the image, they can see that you opened the email. There's just no need for that.
Additionally, confusing images are one way scammers hide information to avoid being filtered by email servers as scam / spam.
VPN. If you wish to hide your IP/location to services, you can do so via VPN indirection. I recommend Mullvad VPN. I keep VPN off by default, but enable it selectively when I'm dealing with services I trust less and want more protection from.
DNS-based blocker. You can block ads by blocking entire domains at the DNS level. I like and use NextDNS, which blocks all kinds of ads and trackers. For more advanced users who like to tinker, pi-hole is the physical alternative.
Network monitor. I like and use The Little Snitch, which I have installed and running on my MacBook. This lets you see which apps are communicating, how much data and when, so you can keep track of what apps on your computer "call home" and how often. Any app that communicates too much is sus, and should potentially be uninstalled if you don't expect the traffic. I just want to live a secure digital life and establish harmonious relationships with products and services that leak only the necessary information. And I wish to pay for the software I use so that incentives are aligned and so that I am the customer. This is not trivial, but it is possible to approach with some determination and discipline.... (ete etc)

Essential Avengers: West Coast Avengers #64: SHOW AND TELL
Tumblr media
November, 1990
Cap, no! That's your World War II buddy, Jim Hammond! Don't hurt him, not while he's serving cake!
This is a fill-in issue. For whatever reason, Terry Kavanagh came in to write this issue, instead of the usual team of Thomases.
And it's not really a West Coast Avengers story. It's a Captain America story. Despite the cover saying he's guest starring, it's more like a couple West Coast Avengers characters are guest starring in his life.
Last times in West Coast Avengers: it is a superhero team that exists and the robot Human Torch, Jim Hammond, is a member.
But enough about him, this is a Captain America story, which is why we start with
Tumblr media
Rick Jones getting kidnapped.
Dammit, Rick!
But specifically, this is a transmission that Captain America received, which he manages to trace to the West Coast Avengers Compound!
DUN DUN DUN!
The robot Human Torch, Jim Hammond, answers the big video screen when Cap calls to investigate.
Also, Cap commits a micro-aggression against his good robot pal bud, Jim Hammond.
Tumblr media
"Hey, Cap, you're made of meat, why don't you try to interface with a donkey?"
You've been spoiled by Vision, who will plug his brain into any computer, Cap.
But Jim investigates and finds that the West Coast Avengers' computers were hacked and used to reroute a message from an abandoned carnival in the Midwest.
As soon as Cap gets the address, he's gone. He doesn't even bother hanging up the call.
Dammit, Cap, Tony is going to get stuck with that long-distance bill!
But it seems that some little dweeb is the one who sent the message.
Tumblr media
I can tell it's some little dweeb because his mom comes in and yells at him that it's bedtime.
The dweeb, Stevie Wojciehowicz, sneaks out after lights out, thinking how great it is that he found a lucky, magical red rock.
Captain America arrives at some abandoned amusement park, while back at the West Coast Avengers Compound, robot Human Torch discovers that the amusement park was not the source of the signal but another relay station!
IT'S A TRAP!
Jim tells Wonder Man to cover monitor duty for him and then flies off to warn Cap, since he can't reach him on communications.
This situation is potentially very dangerous because Jim Torch also detected an energy residue similar to the crimson gem of Cyttorak. Y'know, the thing that made the Juggernaut jugger his nauts? A pretty big deal of a mystic artifact?
So, apparently some backstory. At some point, Juggernaut decided to turn his life partner Black Tom Cassidy into another Juggernaut with the gem so they could jugger together. Except, he realized that this split his own power in half so he threw the gem into space to get his full strength back.
Meanwhile, at the amusement part, copyright infringement.
Tumblr media
Earlier there was a funhouse entrance shaped like the Joker's head.
Anyway, the amusement park has been converted into a death trap. Mannequins dressed as popular characters try to kill Cap. The normal lights and sounds have been cranked to painful. And the walls are trying to crush Cap.
Cap escapes the room just before the walls close in but winds up on a white river rapid tunnel of love. He survives going over a waterfall by riding his shield down.
Captain America: "How does anyone get by without an indestructible shield?"
And then the big, lumpy guy from the kidnapping video punches him in the head and steals said shield.
Rude.
Meanwhile, while flying to help Cap, Jim Hammond Human Torch has been struck by lightning, attacked by mirror duplicates of himself, uno reverse carded by the mirrors, and finally attacked by illusions of monsters and his Invaders friends who mess with his circuits thanks to Stevie Wojciehowicz and the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. This just isn't his day!
But in the madness, he spots Rick Jones and chases after him. Only for both him and Cap (chasing and retrieving his shield from that big guy) to end up in the wax museum.
Tumblr media
And suddenly the wax figures come to life and start attacking Cap and Human Torch with wax copies of the real heroes' powers.
Also, Cap and Human Torch assume each other are also wax figures because what else would they think at this point?
They both go to save Rick Jones, menaced by the big lumpy guy, so wind up fighting each other.
Just another classic Marvel Misunderstanding Fight tm.
Anyway, while the two of them are realizing that they're each other, the big, lumpy yellow guy catches Rick and pokes his eyes out.
Gruesome.
And then the Great Lakes Avengers show up, see Cap and Torch standing over a dead Rick Jones and Avengers Assemble on the two heroes.
Tumblr media
So, the Great Lakes Avengers getting involved was foreshadowed. By having shadowy figures receive a call, allegedly from Captain America, calling them into action.
Dammit, Stevie!
Seriously, though, it's good to see that someone remembers them and still wants to use them for something. Their appearance in the Terminus Factor wasn't really much to write home about.
Jim Hammond Human Torch grabs Cap and rockets him away from the Great Lakes Avengers but Dinah Soar knocks the two to the ground. Flatman grabs Captain America and Dinah Soar keeps on the Torch.
Mr Immortal tries to flank Cap but the Torch sees it and fires a little fire blast and kinda sorta fries him into a corpse.
Human Torch: "No... It can't be... I didn't mean to kill him! I guess I just assumed... with a name like Mr Immortal... that he couldn't be..."
Cap has to explain to him that he's the kind of immortal where he gets better from fatal injuries. He is people that does not die when he is killed.
Mr Immortal pops back up during this explanation, KRAKs Cap in the head, and tries to run off with his shield.
So the Torch goes 'ok so if he can't die, then I can really brutalize him' and flame broils Mr Immortal into ashes.
Tumblr media
There's something about people that can't die that just makes superheroes go 'oh sweet, I can get nasty!'
But there's other Great Lakes Avengers members that haven't shown up so Big Bertha suddenly appears, trying to cannonball the Human Torch.
Cap throws his mighty shield to get her off Jim but Doorman jumps out and lets the shield fly into his portal body.
Doorman's body is a portal to the next room. That's his thing. I don't know how that applies here because the shield doesn't go into the next room. It just disappears into Doorman.
Cap helps Torch heft Big Bertha off himself and throw her on Doorman. And then while the Great Lakes Avengers are incapacitated, Cap goes to inspect the dead, deceased Rick Jones and discovers, yup, that's a wax figure.
Rick was never here. It was all a ruse.
Sheepishly, the Great Lakes Avengers explain that they got a call on the Avengers computers from who they thought was Captain America, telling them that an imposter Captain America had stolen his shield and that only the Great Lakes Avengers could be trusted to retrieve it.
And to his dismay, Doorman discovers that the shield isn't where he teleported it to. Which was apparently supposed to be just to the side.
Geez, the Great Lakes Avengers finally get some screen time and it's being fooled into helping steal Cap's mighty shield.
Except Cap was one step ahead.
He noticed that the robots and wax figures at this amusement park trap kept trying to steal his shield. So he pulled an ol' switcheroo in the wax museum.
Captain America: "The Avengers will find whoever is responsible for this -- and we might want to look for the real Rick Jones while we're at it -- but, in the meantime, the perpetrator is in for a surprise when he tries to use the shield for whatever his dark purpose."
Which is show and tell.
Just like the title of the issue warned us about!
Stevie caused the Avengers all this grief because he wanted to steal Cap's shield for show and tell. And lie and say Cap gave it to him for being such a cool dude.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, for Stevie, he didn't notice the ol' switcheroo until now, when he pulls out the shield and sees its all melty. And alllll of his classmates laugh at him.
I'd feel bad for him if he hadn't been idly musing about killing his whole class even before they laughed at him.
So Stevie swears revenge and probably terrorizes his school with a magical red rock. Probably.
Stevie only appears in this one issue of West Coast Avengers.
That untold tale where he and the Hulk fought the Juggernaut? Never gets told. How the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak goes from Stevie back to the Juggernaut? Unknown. Whether Stevie made good on his vow to make the Avengers pay? I know about as much as you do.
I guess nobody was interested in following up on this plot thread that Terry Kavanagh established, not even Terry Kavanagh.
Next on West Coast Avengers, Grim Reaper again, oy. But first, next on Avengers, more of Rage and the hero of Chernobyl guy.
Follow @essential-avengers. Too tired to give reasons. Just imagine I said some. Like and reblog and maybe comment.

The Evolution of DJ Controllers: From Analog Beginnings to Intelligent Performance Systems
The DJ controller has undergone a remarkable transformation—what began as a basic interface for beat matching has now evolved into a powerful centerpiece of live performance technology. Over the years, the convergence of hardware precision, software intelligence, and real-time connectivity has redefined how DJs mix, manipulate, and present music to audiences.
For professional audio engineers and system designers, understanding this technological evolution is more than a history lesson—it's essential knowledge that informs how modern DJ systems are integrated into complex live environments. From early MIDI-based setups to today's AI-driven, all-in-one ecosystems, this blog explores the innovations that have shaped DJ controllers into the versatile tools they are today.
Tumblr media
The Analog Foundation: Where It All Began
The roots of DJing lie in vinyl turntables and analog mixers. These setups emphasized feel, timing, and technique. There were no screens, no sync buttons—just rotary EQs, crossfaders, and the unmistakable tactile response of a needle on wax.
For audio engineers, these analog rigs meant clean signal paths and minimal processing latency. However, flexibility was limited, and transporting crates of vinyl to every gig was logistically demanding.
The Rise of MIDI and Digital Integration
The early 2000s brought the integration of MIDI controllers into DJ performance, marking a shift toward digital workflows. Devices like the Vestax VCI-100 and Hercules DJ Console enabled control over software like Traktor, Serato, and VirtualDJ. This introduced features such as beat syncing, cue points, and FX without losing physical interaction.
From an engineering perspective, this era introduced complexities such as USB data latency, audio driver configurations, and software-to-hardware mapping. However, it also opened the door to more compact, modular systems with immense creative potential.
Controllerism and Creative Freedom
Between 2010 and 2015, the concept of controllerism took hold. DJs began customizing their setups with multiple MIDI controllers, pad grids, FX units, and audio interfaces to create dynamic, live remix environments. Brands like Native Instruments, Akai, and Novation responded with feature-rich units that merged performance hardware with production workflows.
Technical advancements during this period included:
High-resolution jog wheels and pitch faders
Multi-deck software integration
RGB velocity-sensitive pads
Onboard audio interfaces with 24-bit output
HID protocol for tighter software-hardware response
These tools enabled a new breed of DJs to blur the lines between DJing, live production, and performance art—all requiring more advanced routing, monitoring, and latency optimization from audio engineers.
All-in-One Systems: Power Without the Laptop
As processors became more compact and efficient, DJ controllers began to include embedded CPUs, allowing them to function independently from computers. Products like the Pioneer XDJ-RX, Denon Prime 4, and RANE ONE revolutionized the scene by delivering laptop-free performance with powerful internal architecture.
Key engineering features included:
Multi-core processing with low-latency audio paths
High-definition touch displays with waveform visualization
Dual USB and SD card support for redundancy
Built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet for music streaming and cloud sync
Zone routing and balanced outputs for advanced venue integration
For engineers managing live venues or touring rigs, these systems offered fewer points of failure, reduced setup times, and greater reliability under high-demand conditions.
Tumblr media
Embedded AI and Real-Time Stem Control
One of the most significant breakthroughs in recent years has been the integration of AI-driven tools. Systems now offer real-time stem separation, powered by machine learning models that can isolate vocals, drums, bass, or instruments on the fly. Solutions like Serato Stems and Engine DJ OS have embedded this functionality directly into hardware workflows.
This allows DJs to perform spontaneous remixes and mashups without needing pre-processed tracks. From a technical standpoint, it demands powerful onboard DSP or GPU acceleration and raises the bar for system bandwidth and real-time processing.
For engineers, this means preparing systems that can handle complex source isolation and downstream processing without signal degradation or sync loss.
Cloud Connectivity & Software Ecosystem Maturity
Today’s DJ controllers are not just performance tools—they are part of a broader ecosystem that includes cloud storage, mobile app control, and wireless synchronization. Platforms like rekordbox Cloud, Dropbox Sync, and Engine Cloud allow DJs to manage libraries remotely and update sets across devices instantly.
This shift benefits engineers and production teams in several ways:
Faster changeovers between performers using synced metadata
Simplified backline configurations with minimal drive swapping
Streamlined updates, firmware management, and analytics
Improved troubleshooting through centralized data logging
The era of USB sticks and manual track loading is giving way to seamless, cloud-based workflows that reduce risk and increase efficiency in high-pressure environments.
Hybrid & Modular Workflows: The Return of Customization
While all-in-one units dominate, many professional DJs are returning to hybrid setups—custom configurations that blend traditional turntables, modular FX units, MIDI controllers, and DAW integration. This modularity supports a more performance-oriented approach, especially in experimental and genre-pushing environments.
These setups often require:
MIDI-to-CV converters for synth and modular gear integration
Advanced routing and clock sync using tools like Ableton Link
OSC (Open Sound Control) communication for custom mapping
Expanded monitoring and cueing flexibility
This renewed complexity places greater demands on engineers, who must design systems that are flexible, fail-safe, and capable of supporting unconventional performance styles.
Looking Ahead: AI Mixing, Haptics & Gesture Control
As we look to the future, the next phase of DJ controllers is already taking shape. Innovations on the horizon include:
AI-assisted mixing that adapts in real time to crowd energy
Haptic feedback jog wheels that provide dynamic tactile response
Gesture-based FX triggering via infrared or wearable sensors
Augmented reality interfaces for 3D waveform manipulation
Deeper integration with lighting and visual systems through DMX and timecode sync
For engineers, this means staying ahead of emerging protocols and preparing venues for more immersive, synchronized, and responsive performances.
Final Thoughts
The modern DJ controller is no longer just a mixing tool—it's a self-contained creative engine, central to the live music experience. Understanding its capabilities and the technology driving it is critical for audio engineers who are expected to deliver seamless, high-impact performances in every environment.
Whether you’re building a club system, managing a tour rig, or outfitting a studio, choosing the right gear is key. Sourcing equipment from a trusted professional audio retailer—online or in-store—ensures not only access to cutting-edge products but also expert guidance, technical support, and long-term reliability.
As DJ technology continues to evolve, so too must the systems that support it. The future is fast, intelligent, and immersive—and it’s powered by the gear we choose today.

Why Built-In Audio Interfaces in Modern DJ Controllers Are a Game-Changer
If you’ve ever dabbled in DJing or are thinking about stepping behind the decks for the first time, you’ve probably noticed how much gear is involved. Cables, controllers, mixers, headphones, speakers—the list can feel endless. But there’s one feature in modern DJ controllers that simplifies things significantly: built-in audio interfaces.
These days, most DJ controllers come equipped with built-in audio interfaces, making it easier than ever to connect your gear, improve sound quality, and streamline your setup. But what exactly is an audio interface, and why is it such a big deal? Let’s break it down.
What Is an Audio Interface?
Before diving into the specifics of DJ controllers, let’s take a moment to understand what an audio interface is. Simply put, an audio interface is a device that processes audio signals between your computer and other audio equipment.
Think of it as the bridge that translates digital signals from your laptop into sound that your speakers or headphones can reproduce. In a DJ setup, the audio interface ensures your mixes sound clean, balanced, and professional.
Traditionally, audio interfaces were separate devices that DJs and music producers had to purchase alongside their other gear. But with advancements in technology, manufacturers have started incorporating them directly into DJ controllers—and it’s been a total game-changer.
Tumblr media
Why Built-In Audio Interfaces Are a Big Deal for DJs
1. Simplifies Your Setup
In the past, setting up a DJ rig meant juggling multiple pieces of equipment, including external audio interfaces. Not only did this mean more cables and connections, but it also added to the overall cost.
With a built-in audio interface, modern DJ controllers eliminate the need for an external device. All you need is your laptop, controller, and speakers (plus headphones, of course), and you’re ready to go. Fewer pieces of gear mean less time setting up and more time focusing on your performance.
2. Enhanced Sound Quality
If you’ve ever plugged directly into a computer’s headphone jack for audio output, you’ve probably noticed it doesn’t sound great. That’s because most computer sound cards aren’t designed for professional audio applications.
Built-in audio interfaces in DJ controllers are specifically engineered for high-quality sound. They minimize latency (the delay between pressing a button and hearing the sound), reduce noise, and provide a clean audio signal. This is especially crucial when performing live, where even a slight lag or distortion can throw off the vibe.
3. Multiple Output Options
One of the standout features of a built-in audio interface is the variety of outputs it offers. Most modern DJ controllers allow you to connect directly to:
Main speakers: For the audience to hear your mix.
Booth monitors: So you can hear your performance clearly while mixing.
Headphones: To cue up tracks and prepare transitions without the audience hearing.
This flexibility gives you more control over your sound, whether you’re performing at a small house party or a large club.
Tumblr media
4. Portable and Convenient
For DJs who are always on the move, portability is everything. Lugging around an external audio interface can be a hassle, especially when traveling or playing multiple gigs in one night.
Having an audio interface built into your controller means one less thing to pack. It’s an all-in-one solution that keeps your setup compact and easy to transport.
Key Features to Look For in a Built-In Audio Interface
Not all built-in audio interfaces are created equal. If you’re shopping for a DJ controller, here are a few features to consider:
High Resolution: Look for interfaces with at least 24-bit/48kHz resolution for crisp and clear audio.
Low Latency: The lower the latency, the more responsive your controller will feel during a performance.
Multiple Outputs: Ensure the interface supports separate outputs for main speakers, booth monitors, and headphones.
Balanced Connections: Balanced outputs (like XLR or TRS) help reduce noise and interference, resulting in cleaner sound.
Who Benefits the Most from Built-In Audio Interfaces?
The short answer? Everyone. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, a DJ controller with a built-in audio interface can enhance your experience in several ways:
Beginners: Built-in interfaces make it easy to set up and get started without needing to invest in extra equipment.
Mobile DJs: The compact and portable nature of these controllers is perfect for gigs on the go.
Club DJs: The high-quality audio ensures your sound cuts through the mix in any environment.
How to Make the Most of Your Built-In Audio Interface
Here are a few tips to maximize the benefits of your DJ controller’s built-in audio interface:
1. Use the Right Cables
The quality of your cables can impact your sound. Opt for high-quality, balanced cables to connect your controller to your speakers.
2. Optimize Your Audio Settings
Most DJ software allows you to adjust audio settings, such as sample rate and buffer size. Experiment with these settings to find the perfect balance between sound quality and performance.
3. Regular Maintenance
Dust and debris can interfere with your audio connections over time. Keep your controller clean and check your ports regularly to ensure everything stays in top condition.
When shopping for a DJ controller, it’s always worth visiting a reputable audio shop. Not only can they help you find the perfect controller for your needs, but they’ll also provide valuable advice on how to optimize your setup. Plus, you can test out different models in person to find the one that feels just right.
Conclusion
Built-in audio interfaces have revolutionized the DJ world, making it easier than ever to achieve professional sound without the need for extra equipment. Whether you’re spinning tracks at a friend’s party or headlining at a club, the convenience, sound quality, and flexibility of these interfaces can’t be overstated.
So the next time you’re in the market for a DJ controller, pay attention to its built-in audio interface. It might just be the feature that takes your performance to the next level.

Working on Sophias Story again :D
-> A little later, Sophia reached maintenance shaft [xy], where the main security system of the SD of the Abyss Chrusher was located. The light activated by a motion sensor flared up in cold white with a delay of a few seconds. Neon Xilkor tubes of the NX-6 series had this somewhat unpleasant habit, which the manufacturer Asterisk never rectified. Despite this, Hallinger-FTL continued to install them in all maintenance rooms of their ship series to this day. The Davar class in particular suffered from this fact, as it had a higher number of such areas due to its modular design. As a result, Sophia had only been able to recognise the large control cabinets and component racks by the myriad of flashing LEDs when she arrived. This sea of red, orange and green diodes, which greeted her auspiciously from the steel racks, secretly watched over the entire crew and ensured that the safety units of the individual SERAHs were working.
Now that the white light flooded the room, she saw it in its entirety, and with it the technology inside. In contrast to the blinking confusion of the Sevix control racks on the right side of the room, the Servagul control cabinets on her left, unusual for a Davar-class ship, emitted a soft green glow. The reason for this was that Servagul built light panels into the doors of their products, which no self-respecting shipbuilder needed. Such nice lighting did nothing but waste power unnecessarily. Sure, ships like the Abyss Chrusher might not lack power, but that was no reason to be so wasteful.
Shrugging her shoulders, the engineer lifted her tool and the testing device before taking them to the control cabinet labelled SUR-2, where she set them down. She unlocked the door with her CAM and the handle whirred out, allowing her to open the cabinet. Sophia sighed, pulled open the cupboard door and, coloured by the light from the front panel, saw another flood of flashing or glowing diodes emanating from the security register cards. It was a sight that filled the engineer with joy, because she had hardly been able to wait to get back into the bowels of the Abyss Chrusher, but the work that was to follow was rather dull. So she plugged her headphones into her CAM, put them in her ears and switched on an album by a band Liv had shown her a few days ago. A harsh guitar riff accompanied by the vocals of a woman singing in the language of the Marlan system rang out.
She then began checking the security tabs, which initially consisted of informing the SD-SERAH of her work via the control panel in the top frame of the device. In fact, Sophia was only slightly keen on an emergency lockout of the SD, even if she could override it with her system authorisations. Basically, you had to give Servagul and Sevix credit for the cleverness of their products. After all, the automatic security system, which according to Ela - unfortunately there were no plans on this subject - summarised one subsystem of the drive per cabinet in order to pass them on to SERAH in a bundle.
You could imagine the tabs and their subsystems as the nervous system of a body, which transmitted every pain of the machines to the consciousness or to an AI. SERAH then reported the information to the Abyss Chrusher's SAM, the ship's main AI, which ensured that appropriate action was taken. What the SERAH was to the SD, the SAM was to the entire ship.
Sophia pulled a small screwdriver from the side pocket on her left arm. She used it to loosen the two neck screws on the top and bottom of the front panel of each of the seven assemblies. She was then able to pull them out by the handle to insert them into the test device. This established a serial, wired connection with the fuse register in order to then interrogate the main function of the unit on the two circuit boards of the modules. For this purpose, the test device simulated a fault by sending a specific signal sequence via the bus interface. The module processed this within a few femtoseconds and signalled an alarm back to the test device. At least that's how it worked when everything was OK. The process only took a few blinks of the eye until the technical measurement results - such as resistance, time and induction values - appeared on the display of the test device. Confirmation of the success or failure of the analysis could then also be obtained.<-
