Aileen Pringle as the character Zara, wearing an Erté gown for the 1925 silent Tod Browning occult(-ish) thriller THE MYSTIC. In the film, Zara gets her way by convincing her victims she has occult powers. Of course, director Browning went on to direct DRACULA and FREAKS in the early 1930s. (Silent and Pre-Code Horror)

A scene from the 1917 film A MORMON MAID, a bizarre film set in the 1840s against the backdrop of Mormon expansion into the West, particularly Utah. Pictured here, members of "the Avenging Angels, a band of masked Mormon militiamen" (as described at Turner Classic Movies’ website) take the main character Dora, played here by Mae Murray, hostage so that she can be married off to conniving Mormon polygamist Elder Darius Burr. (TCM’s synopsis of A MORMON MAID is here: https://www.tcm.com/tcmdb/title/497120/a-mormon-maid#synopsis )
Interestingly, there was a brief fad of anti-Mormon scare films in the late 1910s and 1920s that included A MORMON MAID and the better-known TRAPPED BY THE MORMONS from 1922. A current Mormon website claims, "Though largely unknown today, A MORMON MAID is arguably the most potent and important anti-Mormon film in the history of cinema. Produced under director general Cecil B. DeMille at Famous Players-Lasky ... it was, to all appearances, designed to benefit from the success of D.W. Griffith's landmark THE BIRTH OF A NATION from two years earlier. Not only was it handled and marketed in this way, but the film's content itself made explicit references to the Ku Klux Klan by linking them with the Mormon Danites." The film remains an interesting historical curiosity of the short-lived "Mormonspolitation" subgenre in early cinema. (Silent and Pre-Code Horror)

An image from DW Griffith's 1926 adaptation of Marie Corelli's 1895 novel THE SORROWS OF SATAN. Griffith's film was the third of at least three cinematic versions of Corelli’s bestseller.
.
The first film adaptation of THE SORROWS OF SATAN was released in 1917, directed by Alexander Butler in England. The second appeared in 1920's LEAVES FROM SATAN'S BOOK ("Blade af Satans Bog"), an anthology film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer (of later VAMPYR fame). DW Griffith's 1926 film produced the striking image featured here, seen by many for the first time over 50 years later when Bauhaus used it in the cover art of their "Bela Lugosi's Dead" release on Small Wonder Records in 1979.

Carla Laemmle in the late 1920s.
.
Carla was the niece of Universal Pictures founder Carl Laemmle and got early film roles in 1925's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA as well as a part in the 1931 DRACULA with Bela Lugosi, where she famously spoke the film's first lines: "Among the rugged peaks that frown down upon the Borgo Pass are found crumbling castles of a bygone age .... " Ms. Laemmle lived to be 104.

Henri d’Ursel organized influential experimental film festivals the rest of his life, having only directed this single 33 minute film “in the flush of inexperience,” as he claimed. Reposted from @silentprecodehorror A lobby card for the lost 1915 horror film LIFE WITHOUT SOUL. The silent movie was an adaptation, of sorts, of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the second film version of Frankenstein after Edison Films' first version in 1910. Liberties were taken with the story; the “Creation” here (and not “the Creature”) is given life from molded clay and not corpse parts — and the main character, Victor Frawley (played by William W. Cohill) dreams he is Victor Frankenstein after falling asleep while reading a copy of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. . . . #lifewithoutsoul #maryshelley #frankenstein #lostfilms #lostfilm #silentandprecodehorror #classichorror #universalmonsters #drfrankenstein https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn9_2ChsBKS/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I got tired of there not being many good Theda Bara tshirt designs out there, so I made my own. These limited edition shirts are available in men’s, women’s, and children’s sizes. They're in silver, red, or sepia. You can buy any of these shirts here: https://is.gd/7ZTqpp The image on the shirt is from a 1915 promotional ad for the presumed-lost film SIN. There's also a Lon Chaney/London After Midnight t-shirt at that storefront that's pretty neat, too.
The TeePublic store to buy them at is here: https://www.teepublic.com/user/silentandprecodehorror
