[A Fleeting Moment Has Connected.]
AFM: OMV HIIII
AFM: OH MY VOIDSS AHH YOU’RE SO CUTE!!!
AFM: you live with a colony with NSH, right???
AFM: ooohhhmy VOIDS you’ve GOT to tell me the gossip!!! the good juice!!! tell meeeeeeee
AFM: i’ll tell you about the colony that lives in my city if you do 👀 listen it’s important!! it’s for science!!!
AFM: do slugcats have different cultures??? what is your colony like??? are they like, super different from mine!!
AFM: that would be so amazing!!!! i’m watching a little society grow aaahhhh!!!
[the iterator projection from the green overseer is excitedly waving their hands, spinning on their arm. you can get a glimpse of their chamber behind them; a vast space of a complete disarray of various artifacts and objects strewn about]
Tumblr media
Marbles jumps a little, surprised by a sudden display. The iterator's erratic movement startles her, but she regains composure quickly. The slugcat sits down and listens intently, trying to understand the meaning from the flurry of words uttered by this near-godly being. It appears they want to know more about… her self? Her culture? Marbles is perplexed. While she can understand the metal gods perfectly, there is simply no way to talk back to them, at least in a language that they would understand…
Nonetheless, the blue scug tries to sign with her hands, hoping that the iterator will miraculously understand. A handful of simple gestures learnt from Hunter during language classes. Certainly this should be enough to answer a couple of simple yes/no questions?
Marbles promises to herself that one day she'll find a way to talk to iterators directly.

could I have a beetsalad please (SpearMonkSaint)
Tumblr media
I finally found the strength to draw art according to your request, I'm sorry for such a long wait.
Tumblr media
Spearmaster, Monk and Saint decided to work together on creativity :)
I thought about the theme of this art for a long time, after all, I had to convey through it the relationship of three slugcats at once. After all, some of you already know that drawing simple hugs, kisses and the like is a real blasphemy for me personally and a sign that I can't come up with something more creative and better than this! (this does not mean that, as a matter of principle, I do not draw at all how the characters hug and do simple cute things, however, in this case, I needed to depict what unites these three completely different scug characters) In the end, I decided to turn to my hedcanons and settled on the fact that Spearmaster, Monk and Saint draw together. Everyone contributes to this drawing. If everything is more than obvious with Spearmaster, then how he draws was shown on the hibernation screen, then you may have some questions about the rest, which I will kindly answer)
Saint uses paints because he knows how to make them, from what ingredients, etc. And he knows about all this thanks to Sliver of Straw. She knew a lot about the culture of an Ancients, talked about outstanding works of art to Saint and instilled in him a love of creativity. Although all his attempts at creativity were... aren't such impressive, but the principle of making paints through a lot of trial and error was able to remain in his memory. An interesting fact: Saint's tail is painted with waterproof paints, and these colors correspond to the coloring of the mantle worn by SoS... He misses her very much... He wanted to keep her memory alive... (for this reason, Saint wears a necklace that also belonged to SoS in the past)
Everything is much easier with Monk. There are many colorful plants and flowers growing in the Outer Distance. Even at a young age, Monk was fond of needlework, for this reason he knows how to make beautiful wreaths and has several such wreaths on his tail. The interesting fact №2: it was the Monk who suggested the idea of paired floral decorations to the Survivor

between all of the slugcats, if they all fought to the death, who would win and who would die first?
Survivor's Answer:
Monk's Answer:
Hunter's Answer:
Watcher's Answer:
Gourmand's Answer:
Artificer's Answer:
Rivulet's Answer:
Spearmaster's Answer:
Saint's Answer:
Enot's Answer:
Transcripts Below:
Survivor: "Ah. Man, that's uh... kind of a tough question to answer. Never really gave it too much thought..! but I have a couple ideas. So, like... Arti. Maayyybe Spears, but that's if they can get some sort of advantage over Artificer. As it stands now, I'm pretty confident Artificer would sweep. If lizards were allowed, Monk could totally unleash an army--if Monk even decided to fight. As far as I know, the lil guy's a pacifist, so they might not even fight to begin with. First to die... man, that's... Ehhh it's also not easy to answer... Probably Enot? I don't know."
Monk: "Oh... such a terrible thing, to pit us all against one another in a fight to the death. We’ve all suffered so much, each of us bearing our own scars. I wish it didn’t have to be this way, but if we were to fight... I suppose I’d see things unfolding like this: Hunter... you would be the one to fear most. Your strength, your speed, and the relentless drive you have... it’s like a storm that cannot be stopped. You fight because time is always slipping away from you, and you have no choice but to push forward with everything you have. Artificer, your anger burns hot. You lash out with such power, your bombs a testament to the pain you’ve endured. In battle, you’d be a terrifying force, destroying everything in your path to ensure your own survival. I can’t help but feel sorrow for what you have become. Spearmaster, you are quiet and strange, and your abilities are unlike any of ours. Creating spears from your own body... you would strike with deadly accuracy, draining the life from others to sustain yourself. Your solitude is a strength, but also a curse. Gourmand, you’re gentle at heart, but I know you have hidden depths. In a fight, your strength would surprise us all. You can craft tools and make the most of what the world gives you. You might not seem like a warrior, but your determination to enjoy the simple things could be a hidden weapon. Rivulet, you are so fast—like a river flowing through this harsh land. I think you would dance around the rest of us, never stopping long enough to be caught. Your speed and agility are your greatest allies, and perhaps they’d keep you alive when others fall. Saint, you would not even want to fight. I see in you a calmness that I wish I could have. But in a battle like this, your gentleness might not be enough... unless you could somehow transcend it all, escaping the conflict before it even began. Enot, you are strange to me—like someone who doesn’t belong, yet is part of our world all the same. You would fight, I think, with a quiet desperation to prove yourself. I do not know if it would be enough, but I sense something in you that even I cannot fully understand. Watcher... or should I call you Nightcat? You watch from the shadows, silent and observant. You see more than the rest of us, and your knowledge might be your greatest strength. You seem distant, detached... Perhaps you would simply let the rest of us destroy each other, and emerge at the end, unscathed. Survivor, you and I - we are so alike. You are strong in way I can only dream of, yet I feel the loneliness you carry. In a battle you would endure, waiting, watching and learning from every moment. Your patience and adaptability make you a true survivor. And as... for myself? I do not know if I could even bring myself to fight! The world is already so cruel, and I've seen what violence does! I would hide, I think. Waiting for the storm to pass. If forced into battle, I... might try and find another way. But in the end, I believe it is Hunter, who would stand above us all. Not because they are the strongest, or the fiercest, but because they are conjured by something none of us can fully understand - a force that pushes them to survive, no matter the cost. If anyone could endure, it would be them. But oh, how I wish there were a different way, than fighting, for all of us! So there, Hunter!
Hunter: "That’s a good question… but I believe that Arti would win out of all of us. They have more experience in fighting entire enemy squads than anyone here! Plus, they are dynamite… Literally! No scug matches their glorious vigor! But as for the one who’d die first? Hmm…. Sorry Enot, but you’d fall faster than everyone else here…"
Watcher: "Well... this is hard to answer... it depends what kind of situation we're in... but I will try my best. About who would die first, there's no doubt... that would be Enot. From what I observed he often gets into some of trouble, so I wouldn't be surprised if the luck screws them over. But about who would win... this very hard to answer... if it's mostly about fighting than probably Hunter, Spear and Artifice could win. They have great combat prowess for slugcats, so no doubt they could wipe us out... although... I have weird feeling and I 'm not sure why, but... I think Saint would win..."
Gourmand: "Well, from what I could tell, most of us haven't fought many Slugcats before. After all, we survive by working together, in spite of our differences. I've only ever had to deal with a few dangerous intruders myself - one of whom has strangely ended up in this blog. Unfortunately, none of us are particularly durable, so a brawl could go in many ways. Artificer and Rivulet definitely have an edge. Their dexterity is something I always admired, and as any Scavenger might tell you - they're not easy to hit with spears. And for who dies first? It... could be most of us. Luck really would be important here. Long fights are not really my specialty, but I would likely last a little while, at least. Enot and Watcher would likely struggle the most. Watcher wouldn't handle such situations well, and Enot hasn't spent much time with other Slugcats. They also don't have much that would help them fight, or avoid hits. I know about the mysterious eggs, but knowing their wielder, they would likely get caught in the explosion themselves"
Artificer: "Well I don't want to sound biased but I think I would win in a situation like this, though I believe Spearmaster would be a close second! I do think Monk would be the first to die though, they aren't exactly the combative type. I would say Saint instead of Monk but I have this feeling they have some sort of trick up their sleeve, capable of wiping us all if they really wanted too."
Rivulet: "I mean, okay, there's no rules that say I need to ENGAGE in fights, so theoretically speaking, if the win condition is being the last one standing: I could just let everyone else do the fighting, and then I could just run away, and, if everyone else dies, then I would be crowned the winner! Does that make sense? That counts, right? Oh and for the other question, who would die first... Probably Monk, sorry-"
Spearmaster: “Hmm… I feel that is a bit of an open ended question to answer concretly. You have to think about the arena it’s settled in, what resources we would have available, what state we would be in to fight, is it in our prime, at our average or worst? It’s a lot to consider. General answer though, if we are given various resources, either Artificer or Gourmand would win. If none is at our disposal, it’d be close between me and Arti; in favor for them however since they are really relentless with their aggression; special mention goes to Enot with their weird, singularity bomb behaving egg. And lastly, if it’s in our prime, Saint without a doubt. For the ones who would die first, I’m not sure how to answer that without making it sound… degrading. So please don’t take these answers seriously, they’re just hypothetical after all. With that in mind, my candidates are either Saint or Monk, and it really does depend on how favorable it is for both of them. Monk although weak, has their way with lizards and could in theory make an army out of them, but that’s if they manage to find them, and Saint has powers no other slugcat is able to conceive, but at the same time, they are very frail, so take that of what you will. Hope that helps. …actually is that too long of an answer?”
Saint: "Hmm...given how much I've thought this over you'd think I'd have a conclusion by now. every new variable i consider just throws me off more and more though. Those with combat built bodies naturally have the advantage but they also come with their own weaknesses to be exploited. The only conclusive thing i can state is that Monk would be among the first to go, with myself not too far behind. i suppose we could always just do it for real and see for ourselves...kidding of course, haha."
Enot: "Awwww, must we fight? id rather we all get along and be friends, some of you maybe even more than such but if it haaaaaad to come to it I assure you yours truly would come out victorious." "No you wouldn't!" - Another Slugcat "As for the first to fall...suppose it would end up being either monk or watcher, I feel like both of them would surrender before trying to fight."

Favourite slugcat?
Rain World is a complex and technical game in which the question 'what is your favorite slugcat' cannot be explained in one sentence.
Favorite as...? Design? Gameplay? Story? Their regions? Their endings?
Each scug changes how you play Rain World so much to the point that; that saying 'my favorite slugcat is x' usually refers to a reason they carry.
For example; someone's favorite slugcat can be Artificer due to their unique agression and explosive gameplay which provides action and critical thinking, creating instense situations and such giving adrenaline.
And to some, the Monk is their favorite slugcat due to how simple and calming it is to play as them. Not to mention their.,., funy..,. banana looks.,.,
'favorite slugcat' is too much of a reductive question; which just like how simple questions are the hardest to answer in life, it also requires a complex answer as we can have multiple favorite slugcats for different scenarios.
I don't have time to write a whole article this time. Allow me to break it for you in a way it is the most understandable answer to any human mind can comprehend currently that knows a few or two about Rain World. In a straightforward way; I have multiple favorite slugcats for different places.
Favorite to practice-play : Survivor
Favorite to speedrun : Hunter
Favorite as in gameplay : Artificer / Gourmand
Favorite as story and ending : Watcher / Saint
Favorite for regions, looks and musics : Watcher / Saint
Favorite for goofing around and playing with other people : Rivulet
Favorite to play in Expedition : Spearmaster
Favorite when I chill around : Monk
Favorite of looks and silly : Enot
As you can see I answered your question; which demanded a singular answer, by literally saying all of the official slugcats in the game. Because all of them are my children and have their own special spot.
This is how you understand, play and love Rain World.
Tldr; Enot is funy LMAOO

Since you like Saint, what's your opinion on the Karmaflower ship (arti x saint)?
I know your simple answer is "hate it, absolute hate" (which is fine), but what about a more in depth reason since I think your answer would be interesting
Let's imagine a scenario where the two slugcats exist in the same time period and The Saint isn't trapped as an Echo incapable of having any sort of interaction beyond appearing for a moment and bumping your Karma up a level.
One is a bloodthirsty carnivore that constantly has an army of weapon wielding monkey-deer people on it for blowing up their loved ones and another is a fragile little fruit-eater who's described as a pacifist at heart (Expedition menu). You see where I'm going with this?
Chances are that if The Saint doesn't get caught in the crossfire of the eternal conflict and die horribly because Artificer didn't give a shit it was within bomb range the scumbag will skin it alive and make it into a coat for catching it not murdering a scavenger on sight or even God forbid trying to be friendly with them. Not that it would be able to assist much in combat even if it wanted to considering its fraility and inability to throw a spear, Artificer would hardly have any interest in a weakling who can't keep up with it or eat a single bug without convulsing.
On the other end The Saint wouldn't hate Artificer - or anyone! - but it sure as hell would be horrified by its actions and avoid it as soon as it's made clear that it will not listen to reason. A few minutes tops.
One thing they do have in common is that their Karma is ruined, and maybe you'd think they'd be able to bond over it but I seriously doubt it.
Their circumstances are very different: while there's not much to support it I firmly believe that where Artificer is chained to this world by utter hatred and a need for violence, The Saint is driven by kindness and the wish to help others. I'm not particularly good at analysis and my theory on what exactly is happening in the campaign changes more often than my underwear but I think it says something that it's loop-dream-mind-trip-fantasy-thing revolves around it gaining the power to relieve any other living being from the cycle of death and rebirth they have an extremely slim chance of breaking by themselves.
To summarize it: The Saint deserves better and Artificer deserves nothing.

buddhism in rain world and houseki no kuni (spoilers but you need them anyways)
This week the houseki no kuni rain world overlap is once again breaking my brain. I will say rainworld is more autistic yeah yeah i said hnk is for casuals. Hnk is more dense conceptually and literary wise (like it's basically a buddhist academic analysis in the form of a difficult to comprehend manga), but rain world has the high barrier to entry that you almost need a special interest preoccupation to overcome. Both attract non-binary genders similar to how female mosquitos flock to me. Both are very much "just a little guy" series with themes of bodies and identity. From gems carved to be the same shape by an unintentional tradition started out of an innocent request. To the limitations of the body and how that informs societal role and value, and ultimately self image. To the dissolution of the physical form to embrace fluidity and expression. Scugs just being little non gendered guys. Iterators rotting away in metropolis sized cans. The rain world ancients, bare androgynous bodied but heads covered in elaborate helmets and eyes scratched out in all their art. Bleak desolate post apocalyptic yet beautiful worlds where the human-like precursor species have abandoned the physical world. Highly advanced decadent societies that sought oblivion through the laziest means possible. Built machines to do it for them, outsourcing enlightenment to someone else. And yet in each series a lower life form grasps what these advanced civilizations could not, a simple truth all on their own in accepting their lives as dog and slugcat do what the greatest philosophers could not. Time isn't real.
Both are pretty ambiguous in message like i still don't know what's going on. You better be going into houseki no kuni fluent in japanese, chinese, pali, and have 15 phds in buddhist iconography, pure land buddhist theology, buddhist history, gender theory and also know about japanese idol culture. Ichikawa maybe is critiquing japanese pure land buddhism in it's belief that prayer can lead to the pure land instead of actually internalizing the philosophy and changing one's lifestyle. You have to do the spiritual work yourself and find answers yourself, not have someone else save you or pay your way through like in pure land buddhism. There's a lot of ambiguity in this series like whether the lunarians actually successfully erased themselves or just mixed themselves back into the cosic soup to be reincarnated again one day, my best guess is their grand 10,000 year plan failed. There's also possible critique of the pure land concept too maybe as in the final chapters the pebble gang is still in the same universe, the new planet is still a part of the same universe. But there is the imagery and metaphor of going to the pure land so who knows. My best guess is that the pure land imagery is invoked to say paradise isn't some mystical land, it's already here with us within reach. Also this is ichikawa's second work where the gang leaves the solar system to free themselves of the chains of patriarchy and 2 makes a pattern.
Rain world by its minimalist storytelling nature is simpler or cleaner. It feels like an exploration for the player in concepts of buddhism. Like samsara and karma are interpreted literally through the gameplay loop while in buddhism these don't come into play in a single life time you only see the effects of a life's actions in the next life, things are tallied when you die not as you go. Saint as a bodhisattva is also straightforward. Pretty much everyone's stuck in the world in a state of discontent. The iterators especially are unhappy because they all desire things, they're tied to a duty by creators that have left them behind. The existentialism, the dukha, it's all very buddhist. So I'll skip all that and get to the interesting stuff.
The complexity comes from rain world's people. The portrayal of the ancients/benefactors/creator species in particular fascinates me. And it brings the question whether ascension using void fluid really is this grand holy spiritual completion. Excluding the ending sequence all we know is that no one comes back. The ending sequence maybe have unreliable narrators or represent the slugcats wishes or be non literal, I take them with a grain of salt. Those endings are ominous af. It's important to remember the ancient held beliefs about being trapped in the cycles of the world with the root of that being attachments to the world through the 5 natural desires (violence, gluttony, lust, companionship, self preservation) even before the discovery of void fluid monks were starving themselves and writing about how horrible the world was to live in. While the iterators and ancients are all desperate and suffering trying to die it's the slugcats that find the answer and i dont just mean saint. Gourmand doesn't anguish over being stuck in this world, they let go and live and in this way I'd argue actually get closer to buddhism and what the ancients and iterators try to achieve but fail and end up relying on void fluid for. Gourmand finds one of the answers to life and frees themself from the suffering of the world, they even literally open the path for other slugcats to follow and live their lives. Gourmand lives life counter to ancient philosophy and shows how one can also live outside if buddhism.
Buddhism is inherently existential or since it came first it'd be more accurate to say existentialism is inherently buddhist. One of the key ideas in buddhism is nonself (anatta) in that there is no true self or soul, no divine purpose, you are what you are and you will be what you will be. Change is constant and inevitable, all is impermanent (anicca) and so every person changes and every version is their true self. There is no essence and so there can be no essence proceeding existence. Houseki starts with phos searching for a purpose because they were born with a body that could not perform the taks his society valued. This sparks a journey where phos continuously changes beyond all recognition searching for something he doesn't even know. And I'm not sure there is answer at the end, that there is no definitive meaning to life but life continues anyways, always changing? In rain world natural species no longer exist in this world all substantial species were designed for a purpose and most of those purposes are now obsolete. For the iterators the world is rapidly spinning out if control and leaving them behind. Drastic environmental changes occur through the timeline of the game. Five Pebbles goes from fully functional, creates Rot, deluges the region trying to purge it, has his entire body eaten by rot, and ends up broken in the blizzard covered ruins. For all the iterators their structures are constantly degrading with no way to completely restore them back to new, everything just keeps deteriorating away.
there's a reason most of rain world's fandom consists of autistic trans enbys. Many reasons really.

The Talk
Unfortunately, with the switch in drawing equipment and the chaos of my life lately, the end to the sliver arc was done in writing instead of art.
I want to wrap this up so I can start answering asks again, and so I can eventually bring in my next plot idea, but until then, enjoy the read.
(A tl;dr of the lore impact will be beneath the writing!)
There they stood.
The two lovers, now in different bodies, face-to-face at last.
Suns approached carefully. Why were they so scared to do this? Sliver loved them. She wouldn't hurt them . . . right?
They'd been out of touch with each other for so many cycles. It had felt like an eternity since they'd last heard her voice. They had been desperate to see her again.
"Sliver," they breathed. None of this felt real. It was all one big dream and they'd suddenly wake up, and she'd be as unreachable as she was before.
"Suns."
Hearing her voice made them want to cry. To run into those fluffy arms and never be let go. Screw everything else, how everyone wanted them to make Sliver go away, they wanted to be with her.
They had been dreading this moment from the start. They had been given a goal by the ones they wanted to call friends. The slugcats and iterators that their specimen had befriended. The goal was simple enough in theory.
Force Sliver into hiding and make sure she can never come out again.
Suns was the only one they thought she might listen to.
Sadly, they knew that the others were right about it.
"Why have you damned yourself to this place, my love?"
They froze.
There was no answer to her question. No thoughts in their brain. Everything had been removed just from hearing those words again.
"My love," they echoed, speechless.
She took a step forward. Her paws made no sound, cushioned by the soft fur that grew all across her slugcat's body. Her new form was considerably weaker, but everyone had seen it's power now.
"I had a plan for us," Sliver whispered, getting even closer now. "We would have been together at last. We would have left this world together."
She turned her head as her eyes closed. Suns saw the bright glimmer of a tear across her cheek. "Now look at us. We're still just as far apart as when we started, and now I'm trapped here forever."
"No, no, I'm here." Suns lightly placed their paw on one of hers. It was soft, warm, and absolutely perfect. "I'm here with you forever. We're in this together."
Sliver's breathing started to shake. "Oh, Suns, I love you too much to let you go like this. It wasn't supposed to go like this! Nobody was supposed to get hurt!"
"Nobody is hurt, Sliver. Especially not me." They wished they had a mouth to smile with. To comfort her and love her and give her the kisses they never could before.
But I can't now, and I never will be able to.
"But someone is hurt. Someone of value." Sliver hiccuped as she tried to formulate her words. "All of our friends- Omen and Epoch, and those long-distance ones you had- I want them to be my friends again! I left so suddenly, with no chance to explain any of it, that surely they all hate me now."
"I don't hate you, Sliver. Nobody hates you."
That was a lie.
They could tell Sliver knew it too.
"Please. Nobody's exactly been throwing any parties for me."
"Except Wind. She was pretty happy to hear about you."
Sliver rolled her eyes. "Ancient tongues, I still don't understand what you tried to explain about the whole mess I caused. Hearing people call themselves 'Sliverists' sounds like there was a cult about me."
"To be fair, it pretty much was, my Sliver of sunshine."
Her eyes widened. "My Sun peeking through the clouds. You remember our special nicknames!"
"Of course!" They said, a little frantic. "I never forgot you! Nothing about you!"
"Oh, oh, that means so much to me!"
In an instant, Sliver suddenly wrapped them in a hug. Her fur was so soft, like silk and wool together, but warm and perfect. It wrapped around them like a blanket.
They loved it.
"Suns, I've missed you so much," Sliver said, crying. "I was so worried about you every second of every moment. You never left my thoughts. You've always been the most important thing in this world."
Their heart melted. This was the love they'd missed for countless cycles. The last pearl they'd exchanged had been so long ago.
Suns' tail tensed. The others had the plan neatly laid out. It was either talk her down, or . . . well, the host body always got control after a death.
. . . I can't do this.
"Sliver, I have to tell you why I'm here. Right now, talking to you." They took her paw and pulled it close to their chest, almost right to where their scar was.
"Any-" Sliver gasped. "Your chest! Oh, what happened to your vessel?"
"It's my specimen. Or even, my offspring, if you would like to refer to it as such." Suns sighed. "I'll explain everything later, okay? But, right now . . . "
Silence.
Suns trailed off. What could they say to her? Was there anything to say at all?
"Right now . . . what?"
They felt their eyes watering. They should've removed their creation's tear ducts in the early planning stages, but it didn't work out.
"Sliver, you have to run. Run away from the others."
She looked heartbroken. "I can't leave you, Suns. Not again!"
"I can't leave you, either, but-!" Suns burst into tears. They didn't know how to explain this. Words fumbled in their head aimlessly, stringing together sentences that hardly made sense. "These are my friends! My friends want me to kill you! They want me to kill my one and only girlfriend! Do you see why this is so hard for me?!"
She was silent.
They were silent, breathing hard through flared nostrils.
"Please. I can't choose. I can't decide between you and my friends."
"I won't make you."
Sliver stepped forward and brushed her paw against their cheek. It was chilly, but soft, and they reached out to hold it there.
"I love you, Suns."
"I love you too, Sliver."
She smiled, and closed her eyes.
Suns waited and watched, pulling her into a hug.
"What's happening? Who did she hurt?!" Saint shouted, panicked and shoving themselves away from Suns. "Suns? Are you okay?!"
They nodded slowly. "Fine. I just . . . Want a moment to myself. Spears can entertain you."
And they left, back to a dreamless sleep, thinking of their love.
Hoping she'd return someday.

Tl;Dr: Sliver peacefully gave control to Saint, Suns and Sliver are back on now that they know they're both alive, and I can finally answer asks again.

OOC question, what are the various languages in use now? Many seem to be signed ones rather then vocal, curious about in-world reasoning for that?
*slaps roof of fic* this bad boy can fit so many languages
TL;DR (because this got long fast): Ancient is spoken and universal to all iterators. Suns and Spearmaster's language is a modified, slow hand and face signs. Scavenger language is hand signs. Slugcat language is full-body signs. The reason why the feral creatures sign rather than speak is a combination of not having articulate vocal chops and the simple fact that being quiet is advantageous in the wild.
So. Let's start with the old languages;
First, we have "Ancient", as I've coined it in my notes. It's the language used by iterators, and the Mark of Communication is able to translate the words. All iterators know it and speak it, as at some point in time the language got standardized across the planet for ease of collaboration.
Alongside Ancient, there's the modified Yellow Hegemonic Dynasty sign language that Spearmaster and Suns use. This language is characterized by slow, deliberate, easily-made movements that can be easily read/annotated even through the slow framerate of overseers. This makes it ideal for communication via overseers, though not so much in tight situations requiring fast reaction times.
Then there's the feral languages.
Scavsign is, as it says on the tin, the signed language of scavengers. There is an emphasis on hand gestures, though most signs can be performed with one hand, leaving the other hand free for other tasks. In my asks, I have used ASL as a base for when characters speak using Scavsign. I've used Handspeak.com to help with this, as I myself do not know ASL. You'll also notice how I have characters "speak" from their hands when signing answers.
Finally, there's Slugsign. This language is a full-body slugcat language inspired by these signs made for Jolly Co-op by @bitsbug, though I have also thrown in @druidshollow's sign for Moon from this post! Slugsign is quite expressive, though the vocabulary is not as advanced as Scavsign (though I don't intend to write the two languages grammatically different because I don't want to give the impression that one species is less intelligent than the other). Sitting still is an act of courtesy when others are speaking, however.
Thoughts on why the wild creatures sign instead of speak;
Both scavengers and slugcats use signed languages instead of spoken ones due to a combination of a lack of vocal aptitude and a necessity to keep quiet while outside.
Scavengers are more likely to eventually develop a spoken language, however, for a few reasons;
I headcanon that the scavengers' ancestors were purposed organisms built in some way from the genomes of the benefactors, who seemed to have a spoken language in turn.
A consequence of this is that they may eventually evolve more robust vocalizations as they become advantageous.
Scavengers are probably the next advanced race that will grace Rain World. Let's hope they learn a lesson from their ancestors.
Since Artificer's genocide has ceased early, the growth of the scavenger's society has not been so negatively impacted in the local facility, so their society will continue to advance far past what we see of them after this point in the timeline.
Note: I don't intend for this to be illustrated any time soon within Disconnected. However, because iterators are old as dirt, there is a high likelihood of Moon eventually seeing the scavengers advance in this manner. I think she'd be stoked to see them evolve like this, but also worry that they will turn out just like her parents.
A few extra notes on the feral languages;
There are regional variations for Scavsign, even within iterator local groups. Scavengers tend to be more sedentary, so the scavengers deep in the wastes have a different dialect of Scavsign than the ones living within Pebbles and Moon's facility.
For Slugsign, however, as they are more nomadic, regional variations are fewer and farther between. Ruffles and Spitfire can understand each other just fine, despite originating from different facilities.
Something else, as well, is that it is easier for a slugcat to speak scavsign than it is for a scavenger to speak slugsign, mostly because of differences in anatomy. There are probably a few words that have been exchanged between the two species, though, like what happens with real-world languages. "The Cycle" would probably be a universal one, being some variation of arms crossed over the chest, though I haven't thought much about it in that front.
I have thought about Shore learning to understand Moon's words without the aid of the Mark, but I doubt she would be able to say much of anything that wouldn't be a garbled mess. Kind of like how a dog or chimp can mimic some, but not all, human words, except Shore can understand grammar and meaning
I suppose those are all of my thoughts on the matter for now! I should get a t-shirt that says "ask me about my worldbuilding" or something since this ask was sent in today and I. Uh. Wrote a lot to answer it. I'm sorry character asks *peter griffin death pose*
But, yeah! Thanks for the asks everyone! I appreciate the continued interest and support for my fic and AU! Have a lovely day!

Endless Moving Nights He/They 3rd Gen Endless Moving Nights is usually referred to as "Nights" or more commonly "Endless" as for short. He majors in Biological mechanics and his facility status is currently collapsed after Hidden Niche of Pearls sent a large squad of scavengers and used highly reactive explosives. Before the collapse, Endless had severe insomnia and tended to stay up late into the cycle to work on finding the solution to The Great Problem. He (somewhat) found the solution to, but it was far too dangerous without testing. He had contacted his friend, Witch of Twin Stars to test it out for him- as it was technically a way to save her from the immense rot in her superstructure. She was dying, and what Endless was offering was a body switch into a slugcat subspecies. The subspecies being the only bipedal smart enough in Endless' facility that could be rewired to comprehend the ability to bodyswitch- Bottomfeeders. He sent one of his Bottomfeeders to Witch's can- in which Witch enacted on the instructions Endless had given to her. It was a success, however due to the 'solution' being far too close to being against the self-destruct taboo itself- they both kept it a secret. One of Endless' personal logs stored in a data pearl was 'accidentally' delivered to Hidden Niche of pearls- the iterator being extremely lawful. After the collapse, Endless' half-dead puppet was brought to Pines' can where he was hooked up to an emergency port for an umbilical.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clock of the North She/Her 3rd Gen Clock of the North- formally known as Clock that Forever Points to the Northern Sky or a simpler short name just being Clock. She used to frequently learn more and more about botany and alchemy- however one time, her potion created The Rot in her superstructure. It spread, and she eventually soon collapsed. The rot had gotten partially cleaned up by a squad of slugcats sent by Green Pines, however, when Clock was kidnapped it simply invited itself back in. A large prehistoric slugcat named Memory had taken Clock to an iterator's facility from another local group, which has since been resolved. She was taken to Pines' can for a short amount of time before deciding to leave to beeline from there, to Chime's can, to her own can to finally get back to. She's close friends with Emerald Leaves of the Pines and Endless Moving Nights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One Last Chime He/They 2nd Gen One Last Chime, commonly known as Chime or Chimes. One Last Chime is best friends with Endless Moving Nights, WAS friends with Howling Winds over Bronze Seas, and is either neutral to everybody else or hates everybody else. Ever since Clock of the North was created, it was rather obvious Chime had a big fat crush on her. He talked to her almost every cycle trying to engage her in conversation, frequently showing that he cared about her and just liked talking to her in general. That was until he accused Pines of simply wanting to use clock and claiming he was untrustworthy- and also accidentally slipped out that he loved her. Clock cut off all communication with him for many cycles. They only started talking again- just as friends- when Clock was transported to Pines' can. Chime still has often arguments with Pines, however, he is beginning to become good friends nowadays. Chime is now beginning to realize he has a crush on Endless now which is gonna end fine and dandy! (it's not)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hidden Niche of Pearls She/They 2nd Gen Hidden Niche of Pearls- normally known as Pearls or more commonly as Niche. Niche is an extremely lawful neutral iterator with a high sense of regal and betterness. She understands her place in situations, however enjoys being formal- especially with other iterators. Niche likes to indulge in cultural study from the ancients to her own scavenger colony. Her colony of scavengers respect her and see her as their caretaker and leader, however, there's one particular scavenger- Cookie- she has a direct bond with. Cookie is a young scavenger working to become an elite with her siblings Sylvester and Natalie, and she occasionally pays Niche a visit. They'll talk a lot and Niche lets her guard down whenever with the little scavenger. She feels like a mother figure to Cookie, and Cookie feels like a child figure to Niche. Pearls is slightly antisocial as she would rather spend her time studying or talking to Cookie- and she also has mild paranoia due to a certain fallacy from another iterator which had lead to her breaking her morals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emerald Leaves of the Pines He/Him 2nd Gen Emerald Leaves of the Pines- almost always referred to as Pines. Pines is an authoritive yet layed back iterator with a set of his own code and morals. He frequently got into heavy arguments with the iterator Howling Winds over Bronze Seas- one day Winds sent him a file that was supposed to help him find the solution. Pines was grateful but suspicious of the hospitality- and rightfully so. The file contracted rot that quickly spread through Pines' superstructure. He was silent for a long time, however in that time had been readying a slugcat colony. The slugcats had cleared out almost all of his rot, and 40-50 of them had been sent to take out Winds for what he had done. Only one of them came back alive, however the mission was successful. After word was out that Pines had murdered Winds, most iterators banned him from chats and/or simply resented him. However Clock of the North believed his intentions were good. She didn't have a good relationship with Winds either, as he tended to be rather hostile. Later on in time, Pines began to rebuild his reputation back up and became friends with most iterators in his local group. He cares dearly for his colony of slugcats and hopes for them to continue advancing without the constant threat of rain above the clouds on his superstructure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Witch of Twin Stars He/Her 2nd Gen Witch of Twin Stars- the slugcat now encompanying her puppet is referred to as Kasume, however the iterator who body switched with the slugcat is simply reffered to as The Witch or just Witch. After being body switched, Witch set off to head to the Void Sea where she would then attempt to ascend and see if the solution was truly plausible. Along the way, she met a fluffy yellow slugcat named Sunny- and the pup they took care of, Junior. While travelling, Witch had not told Sunny about her intentions, nor was she sure if the slugcat friend could comprehend it. She began growing a close bond with Sunny, and when it came time to dip into the void sea, she came back up. She couldn't do it. She couldn't leave what she had behind. She headed to Endless' can without telling Sunny or Junior where she was going only to find he had since collapsed. Witch found a pup of her own that she treats as her son- Smoky. They have since been living in Pines' colony.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Karmic Obnoxious Inaccuracy She/It 1st Gen Karmic Obnoxious Inaccuracy, almost always referred to as Koi. She isn't technically a part of Windtooth Plane as she's a bit farther away with no local group of her own, though was originally created to be a part of it. She has no communications with the local group, however she does have communications (occasionally) with her brother Endless. Her facility is submerged underwater, so her arrays and different parts of the superstructure constantly get flooded- making communications somewhat unreliable a lot of the time. She's a bit of an aggressively caring iterator with a strong protectiveness over her brother. She doesn't talk to many other people, however, she has had a word or two with One Last Chime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Howling Winds over Bronze Seas He/Him 2nd Gen Howling Winds over Bronze Seas, sometimes referred to as just Winds. Winds is a highly 'lawful' iterator who frequently antagonizes most others. Despite having administrator privileges before he was murdered, he worked in illegal arsenal manufacturing- weaponry, essentially. Most iterators were neutral toward him, however he had a personal vendetta against Emerald Leaves of the Pines. The only two people he conversed with as friends were Endless Moving Nights and One Last Chime, however Chime moreso tolerated him than not.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(FYI, the second and third image are NOT alternate outfits. The second one is what's underneath the cloak.)
Angel of Dominance She/Her 3rd Gen An iterator who was kidnapped by an iterator of her own local group. She had many experiments done on her and eventually was found dead by Pines' slugcats. She was brought to the facility and temporarily revived but due to a large surgical cut from her hips to her chest, she was in constant pain. The temporary revival was taken away as they did not have the resources to keep her puppet maintained. Eventually, her puppet was rehooked up to the structure when Endless effectively left. She hopes to one day go back to her can in Loveless Meije, however with it being left unattended for some time there's a chance it'll collapse soon.
OTHER ITERATORS
Eight Islands Under Storm Clouds He/Him 2nd Gen An iterator in Windtooth Plane who's extremely antisocial. They haven't said a word to the local group other than Niche. He was created for the purpose of making explosives.
Two Rocks Eroding He/Him 2nd Gen Another iterator who's not necessarily in Windtooth plane, but is in the area. They haven't spoken to anybody.
Tumblr media
Pristine Snow, Twisted Mountains She/They 2nd Gen An iterator who was previously conceived as dead from a power surge. Their facility was built on top of a snowy mountain that has heavy snowfalls. They have spoken to the local group a few times here or there but has mostly talked to Emerald Leaves of the Pines. Their 'death' was soon discovered as faked. She has broken many taboos- almost all of them, to be exact.
Misguided Information Any/All 3rd Gen INFORMATION CLASSIFIED
{ Clock of the North and One Last Chime both belong to @chaoticgoober . Emerald Leaves of the Pines, Howling Winds over Bronze Seas and Pristine Snow, Twisted Mountains all belong to chickenboi on discord. Two Rocks Eroding belongs to King STAZE on all platforms (mostly). Eight Islands Under Storm Clouds belongs to my brother, SomethingUnusual (on all platforms). Everyone else belongs to me. }

i've talked a lot about the buddhist inspiration in the rain world religion and i'm now thinking of the twist made in rain world. it's brilliant worldbuilding
in real world buddhism (to the best of my knowledge-- again, i am not buddhist), it isn't that every desire needs to be avoided. it is only one kind, tanha, that should be avoided because it causes suffering. tanha is more accurately described as craving, it is wanting more than what can be obtained. this is the type of desire that leaves you always wanting more, feeling dissatisfied with yourself. so this craving causes suffering. the other kind of desire, chanda, is desiring what is attained and not wanting more. chanda is an appropriate desire to have according to the 4 noble truths
but in the ancients' religion, they believed that every desire had to be eradicated. simply the act of wanting or needing was sinful and had to be purged. i often think about the green drainage system pearl,
"It says that only the limp body of the jellyfish cannot be captured in the net. So we should try to be like the jellyfish, because the jellyfish doesn't try. This was an eternal dilemma to them - they were burdened by great ambition, yet deeply convinced that striving in itself was an unforgivable vice."
yet they still kept wanting a solution. their craving was pushed onto their creations. in a horrible attempt to free themselves to suffering, they shoved the burden of suffering onto their creations
"Perhaps that's what we were to them, someone to delegate that unrestrained effort to. I know I have tried very hard."
its inspirations were taken to the extreme.
but take the slugcat
more karma means that one is closer to ascending, to reaching a state of no trying to where a physical form was no longer needed, right?
the slugcat does not lose karma by feeding its simple desires. it doesn't lose karma by eating, sleeping, trading, or surviving. it gains it! the slugcat fulfills its basic desires before it sleeps.
by only desiring what it needs, the slugcat persists.
and the slugcat does not need to rush to find enlightenment. it is allowed to take all of the time it needs to wander, explore, get lost, fail, and persist. by being itself, by living in the moment, it is closer to enlightenment then the ancients had been.
and when it descends, it does not suffer anymore. not because it died, but because it achieved everything it wanted to and strived for nothing more. a playthrough of rain world is only over when the player deems it to be over.
so the ancients were wrong. but even in death, they still try. their legacy persists in hard-working, suffering machines.
and the craving for an answer still continued after they were gone. with sos, and fp trying to follow her, creating more suffering for himself and those around him
another horrible kind of cycle!
tl;dr: the ancients' religon in rain world is buddhism taken to an extreme and actually they're wrong about the world because slugcat does it better by being slugcat
THIS POST IS ABOUT VANILLA RAIN WORLD. DO NOT DERAIL

My thoughts of the Watcher dlc now that I have completed both endings
This will have spoilers.
The watcher campaign asks the question "What does it take to become a god?" and gives a not so simple answer: It takes far more than many can achieve.
We start with a simple slugcat (teen? pup at least) that has a single sibling. Based off the intro image, we get another look at slugcat society: they can and will fight each other. It seems at some point, our slugcat (which I will label as nightcat as I think "The Watcher" is actually the echo for reasons I will elaborate on further down) broke off from their colony, either due to the fights or due to another event that we see in one of their dreams. Either way, they are alone when we begin playing as them.
The echo in question, which I will refer to as the Watcher, seems to be a young ancient. Their room in the first ending, their smaller size, and the fact that we are able to help them eventually let go makes me believe they are not an adult. This may also be the reason why they freely give the Nightcat enhanced abilities the more we encounter them. It's very obvious the Watcher is lonely, as they even say so in some dialogue. Said abilities allow the Nightcat to access a whole new set of "karma", however I'm not even sure it's safe to say it's even karma. Similar to how the new "Void Spawn" are called Ripple Spawn, this new Karma may just be Ripples. After all, one of the arg codes was "More than karma to pass". This isn't karma, it's the progression of a drop hitting a ripple.
youtube
We do eventually help our Watcher friend move on, essentially un-echoing them (To which Nightcat then plays with their toys).
However, there is a third presence, one that will most likely be expanded on once the console port is released: The Rotten Iterator, or "Roterator" as some are calling it. It has a simple goal: Spread the rot, and the nightcat can do this by warping to new locations and resting. At some point before the watcher arrives, this iterator somehow CAUGHT a whole voidworm. Whether it was experimenting on it or not, the end result is the same: The voidworm becomes infected by the rot. This eventually leads to the regions we know from the vanilla game (Or at least a version of them) to be completely overtaken by this new rot. By the time the nightcat arrives at the iterator's can, it's too late, the rot and the iterator have become one. So, we listen and spread the rot further. But when all regions capable of spreading the rot to have been rotted? Something interesting happens.
youtube
The rot is overtaken by Karma flowers, and the nightcat? It stands at the top, it's new home complete. There are other things I want to go over, but I need to save those until after they are available is safari.
So what does it take to become a god?
It takes far more than what Saint became. Who needs ascension when you can bend reality itself?

9. and 20. please.
Also love the new lil scugsona. Very fitting for you.
@scavworld's Rain World Questionnaire
Thanks for the ask! Just a quick note, that little character was actually meant to be a scug-ified version of my regular avatar, which I should probably make a ref for soon. I've always just liked the idea that it can "transform" into a different creature to match whatever fandom I'm dealing with, so I thought I'd portray it as a slugcat in this case!
Anyway though, onto the actual questions...
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
9. What are your opinions on Five Pebbles (character)?
Ohhh, now that's a very interesting matter! I really like characters like him because they're so fascinating to me! For now I will disregard the fantastical element of him being a massive supercomputer, because even though in-and-of-itself I think that's such a unique concept even in fiction, especially after I realized that Five Pebbles and Looks to the Moon really are the core of not just the "story" of Rain World but even the in-game environment itself, I imagine I'll have another chance to touch up on this so I'll save my longer thoughts on that for later.
That being said, I'll start by saying I love thinking about characters from a psychological perspective, trying to figure out why they are the way they are, why they do what they do, what they really want vs. what they think they want, how they really perceive themselves vs. how they present themselves publicly, etc. Characters like Five Pebbles are always an especially interesting choice for this kind of pondering, because, as flawed as they may be, so much of the situation around them also contributed to their downfall that I refuse to let everyone else off the hook too. And since I also don't believe anyone is inherently a "bad" person, it's really fun to ponder just how these characters go from being alright people to doing such terrible things and meeting such tragic ends.
To put it shortly, Five Pebbles (and other characters like him) is in my interpretation a great example of karma in the more real-life meaning, and the "you attract more of what you think about the most" idea. Five Pebbles always seemed to feel trapped by and at arms with his surroundings, from the great opposition to his very existence from the True Anointed Citadel, to him literally being physically stuck to Looks to the Moon, to the fear of opposition he must have had as a Sliverist, to him being stuck dealing with the rot, and finally with his collapse, left as a tiny fraction of himself buried in the cold, lifeless remains of his superstructure, with truly no way out on his own. Because he was so focused on escaping the perceived confines around him, all he did, albeit unknowingly, was end up finding more nets to get trapped in.
And again, while I think everyone around him did contribute to his awful end in some way, stories like these are still pretty sad to me because, in the end, I think these characters themselves need to learn to change their thinking, yet all the harshness they face can so easily lead them to create a vicious cycle. Five Pebbles isn't the first character I've enjoyed strongly whose story seemed to play out this way, and as sad as it is, it's also very intriguing.
And besides, it opens up plenty of potential for redemption arc AU stories—!
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
20. What is something you think the game could improve on?
The short answer: incentive.
The long answer: Let me start off by saying Rain World, to me, is fascinating largely as more of an art project than a normal video game. It's amazing how a relatively simple concept of a small animal in an urban environment they can't understand morphed into something so vast and extensive, combining nature with technology, science with religion, sci-fi with fantasy, and dunking it all in a super unique aesthetic that fuses urban street style with fancy ancient artwork, it's amazing!
BUT so much of this is lost to players because the game does, in my opinion, a pretty bad job of conveying it all. It's very confusing , especially to new players, and the only means of discovering the greater context of the story, besides just hearing it from other players/fans, is if not downright frustrating at least very tedious. And that's just getting the story itself. I think most people who have played this game haven't even made it that far, because the gameplay alone is so difficult the first time playing that if you aren't captivated by the mystery factor of the environment (or like me and also stubbornly dedicated to getting the bragging rights of having beat such a difficult game), you're too busy just trying to not die every other cycle to bother really exploring and ferrying the pearls to Moon, much less making sense of what you uncover.
I think the blank stare of the slugcats looking up at Five Pebbles perfectly encapsulates what I'm getting at here. You've got this absolutely fascinating story about a mechanical god who flew too close to the sun in a desperate attempt to escape the confines of his life, meanwhile the little slugcat is just all "...'kay", because what does this little animal care about the crazy religious hubris of some long-gone existence-hating people and their sad crumbling calculator robots when all it wants its is to just find more food and not get eaten again?
For a bit of devil's advocate, I will say that I think the difficulty of just playing the game and then figuring out its story, first of all is pretty "realistic" from the perspective of simulating a real-life ecosystem and having an animal discover complex lore in a way that they'd be physically capable of, but secondly has led the Rain World fandom to be really tight-knit compared to other fandoms I've seen. It seems like everyone I've come across is at least in the process of playing through all the campaigns, if not having already completed them and established some level of their own interpretation of the story, because they are all genuinely interested in the game, its characters, world, story, and themes enough to persevere through all the struggles of gameplay and lore confusion to enjoy it. However, it's also the same thing that makes this fandom rather small, which is also fine by me; I think there's lots of value in quality niche content!
With all that said though, I can't deny that I think this game isn't very good at getting players geuninely interested in all it has to offer. For evidence, consider how few players have even met Five Pebbles, who is perhaps the most important character in the entire game story-wise (Steam achievements has the "The Journey" Achievement at 12.0% of players as of posting this). Even from my experiences, I didn't even know what "Sliverist" actually meant until a couple weeks ago, and I've been playing this game and involved in the fandom for months at this point!
So yeah. To sumarize, in my opinion, Rain World is a fascinating and very inspiring art project, but most of what it has to offer is lost to most players because it's terrible at giving you a reason to care about it all. Thus, the main thing I think it could improve upon is giving players a reason to care about its worldbuilding and story enough to continue playing.
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
Well, that was long, but pretty fun! I hope these answers suffice! Keep the questions coming!

... I think a lot of people have completely forgotten about the concept of "monsterfucker" in this fandom? Slugcats are sentient. Scavengers are too. If there is a big NO to slugcats, is that NO also for scavengers?
I would assume it only starts going into darker territory when both species are assumed to be entirely feral animals with no higher thought for complex concepts - which would not be canon, as scavengers have a written language of signs and slugcats can understand iterators and answer through action outside of a simple yes or no. Both have cultures of some sort, basic as they may seem and shown ingame.
I just think people are being weird about what other people like when it isn't hurting anyone. If you don't like it, don't look at it, yeah? Why be mean when you obviously want nothing to do with it anyway?

HII wait are you THE the Wanderer (like the one on yt)??? Really sorry if not and I’m mistaking you for the wrong person here
In any case! I love the way you draw iterators and slugcats SO MUCH??? Like your style is just so incredibly eye-pleasing and wonderful to look at I am in incredible awe. Anyway uhm. Yeah! Scuttles away
(- @strandedaylily)
yes!!! i am :]!! the one who animated tr on yt yeash thats me💥. and its you!! the real strandedaylily,, reposted some of ur stuff recently to show it off f4 answering this. love ur thingers :DD✨
and thanku sm 😭😭 that means??? so much??!? its been a journey finding my style and i love that u love it sm!! i have a few diff styles for iterators and slugcats, and whipped up these fast sketchy style analysis sheets last night.
observe:
Iterator Styles
I have two main styles for iterators: chibi and humanoid-ish. round head vs oval head with a cheek curve (cheek curve is a staple of my style. was actually against it when drawing iterators with it for the first time, yet it’s become such a signature now XD. I love it a lot huhu). here is an example with my lovely boy Twine (he is not the main antagonist despite his mischievous posings). also!! slim eyes for devious characters, like twine and shadows (and leaves, unwillingly /lore). the two ogs 💛 with their yellow jack-o-lantern faces. theres a phrase i made up a bit ago: you can’t spell wanderer without jack-o-lantern-faced iterator, can you?
got better with posing over the years but im still struggling with fabric and cloaks </3
Tumblr media
Slugcat Styles
now for slugcats, its evolved a different way. rather with two stages, they have a few more. when i first discovered rainworld, i had a very simple way of drawing. u heads and 3 fingers and toes, aswell with really odd aggressively-digi legs. and then it evolved when i learned “sketching” (blotting down odd shapes with barely any sense of proportion. balls for the elbows, no line of action, eyeing it and getting anatomy wrong lol) and things got really disproportionate. theres more stages, but i made a few complex and simple examples of my style over the years :]!! maybe i put too much effort into it but it was interesting to figure out!!
theres some timeskips in the big timeline one, and some other arts of mine might showcase style changes a bit better, and this is only my digital gallery, but oh well!!! whats done is done until its undone💥 /ghibli movie reference
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
didn’t do iterators or general effects-and-tidbits-i’ve-learned (shading, rendering, lineart, etc) bc i’ve spent so much time already. so you get SLUGCAT BEAM BLASTED💥💥. all this art ranges from 2019-2024 (the years i’ve been a rainworld fan :])
yes i spent hours analyzing my old and new art just for fun but i think i learned something. thanks for asking this and putting a big smile on my face :]!! have a good day you (and anyone else whos reading this. thx for reading so far and so much💛✨!!)

(pfp anon back again im just gonna call myself rory)
More fun questions since ur my favorite tumblr acc :3
What made you initially start shipping ragequit, if anything in particular? Did it just kind of happen?
A lot of people don't finish Rain World when they try it due to it being too hard/not beginner friendly - what was your experience like? Did something in particular motivate you to finish? Did you spoil yourself for the lore ahead of time?
Are your designs more slug, more cat, a balance, or would you say there's no "line" and they are just Slugcat?
(In any AUs) Why does Hunter have the Rot? Lots of different depictions for why they have it - e.g it being an accident or smth, it being deliberate, Sig not feeling bad/feeling guilty forever, etc.
If a slugcat ate a slug would it be cannibalism
Feel free to skip any questions you don't want to answer I'm just enjoying myself tbh :P
YAY QUESTIONS!! 1) funny enough i started shipping ragequit when i was very new to the fandom (it just for some reason clicked even if i dont have wide knowledge about their characters yet) so yeah!you could say it just kind of happen! i find it silly at first actually but then i thought about it and went 'oh actually this is pretty neat this could actually work' 2) my first experience when playing rainworld was me experiencing PAIN AND MISERY as expected to new players like me. but i kept going because i wanted to know the lore and explore because damn the whole world building and game design alone took my breath away its just so pretty literally every single screenshot i took are wallpaper worthy. also i wanted to beat the game !! beating a difficult game is such a big achievement for me. also i accidentally spoiled myself in the process like a few times already but they're not major spoilers thankfully 💀 3) hmm.. well my artstyle when it comes to drawing slugcats is so inconsistent LMAO i started with the 'more cat-like' having some of them with more fluffy, curly or short fur then my style would eventually settle with a balanced style (and also cat and slug). it is very simple yes but i seem to be more content with leaving it simple as possible 4) (critical system failure/disarray AU) - NSH sent hunter to search and investigate five pebbles after he had mysteriously disappeared for several long cycles, long enough to grow suspicion throughout the group. Hunter does not have the rot when he was sent for the mission though however. something had gone wrong when he entered Five Pebbles. and you can pretty much guess just what happened to hunter next 5) hmm nah, slugcat and slugs are both different organisms
