Dating a mer-creature had its difficulties. Martin probably could have told you that before he’d learned it first-hand, but, well. Here he was, and the heart wants what it wants, despite a lack of convenience.

Chief among their problems was the very basic issue of finding ways to spend time together. Martin would spend any spare moment he had sailing out into the bay and just talking with Jon, but he didn’t have the time to do that every day, and it was dangerous to sail when the weather was bad. Sometimes, Jon would meet him on the shore, on a rocky outcropping or old pier, but they could only do this when no one else was around.

Martin could tell that Jon felt a bit guilty about the fact that he couldn’t leave the water for a significant amount of time to make things easier for Martin. Meanwhile Martin felt just as bad that he couldn’t hold his breath long enough to visit Jon’s home deep in the waters of the bay.

One day, after a week of them trying and failing to find a time and place where they could be together, Martin finally put his foot down. If he wanted to see his fish boyfriend who practically lived right next door, by god, he was going to.

He rolled up his sleeves and set about clearing everything out of his bathroom that wasn’t, well, the bath. He had never been more grateful that the old cottage he’d inherited was fitted with a huge clawfoot bathtub, which was normally a pain to clean and had questionable pipes. Now, however, it was a blessing. Martin dumped everything--towels, bathmats, shower curtain, toiletries, everything that wasn’t nailed down--into a closet to deal with later. Then he plugged the bathtub drain and went outside to grab a bucket.

For about two hours he marched to and from the water, which was a short flight of stairs from his front door, though it felt like much further when he was lugging seawater up the steps. Bucket after bucket of algae-choked saltwater was dumped into the tub, until it was about three-quarters full. Jon would surely make up for the rest of the space.

Once he was satisfied with the state of his now mer-creature-proofed bathroom, he set off to find Jon.

As luck would have it, he found Jon at one of their regular spots, a rocky outcropping only a short walk from Martin’s house. Jon was lounging across a rock, tail mostly in the water, and perked up immediately when he saw Martin climb up to join him.

“Hello,” Jon said, his huge, dark eyes sparkling in the light of the setting sun, not unlike the day they’d first met, all those months ago. Jon’s attitude towards Martin was very different now, of course; instead of ineffectually threatening to kill him, he leaned closer and nuzzled Martin’s cheek. “I missed you.”

Martin gave him a kiss on the cheek, in return. “Yeah, it’s been a . . . long week. But I think I’ve found a solution.”

As he explained the idea to Jon, his face lit up, in a way that Martin had learned to recognize after all this time. Jon’s eel-like features had become almost as familiar to him as his own, and now Martin couldn’t even imagine being afraid of the sight of him, as the villagers did. Now, he just found him beautiful.

With Jon’s enthusiastic agreement, Martin hoisted him into his arms and prepared to walk back to his house. Jon was heavier than Martin had expected, his long, thin tail making up the bulk of his weight. It was almost entirely muscle, which he could feel when Jon wrapped it tightly around Martin’s waist, clinging to him as he carried him. Still, Martin managed to get him up the steps and into the bathroom, breaking a healthy sweat in the process.

He tried to lower Jon into the water carefully, but there really is no graceful way to dump a mer-creature into a tub. Jon fell into the water with a splash, sending water cascading over the sides of the tub and soaking everything left in the room, especially Martin. Jon’s tail rapidly followed as he curled it over and around himself, eventually letting it simply hang out in long loops over the side of the tub. It looked like an octopus had been crammed into a pillbox.

For a moment, Martin stood there, dripping, as he and Jon just stared at each other. Then, at the same moment, they both cracked up laughing. Martin doubled over with his hands on his knees, and Jon leaned against the side of the tub. When they finally quieted, Martin wiped his eyes and said, “Alright. So. Not my best plan.”

“I don’t know,” Jon said jovially, splashing the remaining water a bit. “It could be worse.”

“You’re not . . . uncomfortable, are you?”

“No,” Jon said, plainly. He gave Martin a once-over. “Are you?”

Martin looked down at his soaked clothes, and decided that yes, he sort of was. “Give me a second,” he said, rushing out of the room to find his swimming trunks.

A change of clothes later, Martin was sat snugly in the tub, his right side crowded up against Jon’s as his tail wound around him, holding Martin close. It was a tight fit, but neither of them seemed to mind, as they softly conversed, completely alone and unbothered, in the odd little sanctuary of Martin’s water-logged bathroom. Jon was surprisingly warm, and lying this close to him, Martin could hear his heartbeat. It was faster than a human’s, and had an odd rhythm to it, but like everything about Jon, Martin just found it fascinating.

Every once in a while, when there was a lull in the conversation, Jon would give Martin a nuzzle, his replacement for a kiss, as he’d explained. With Jon’s numerous, razor-sharp teeth, mouth kisses were off the table, and honestly, Martin was sort of relieved. He’d never enjoyed them much himself.

As night began to fall outside the tiny bathroom window, and Martin felt himself grow sleepy, he offered to take Jon back to the water. “We ought to start now, so I don’t fall asleep on you,” Martin said.

But Jon shook his head, and curled part of his tail around Martin’s hand. “This is . . . nice. I don’t mind sleeping here. I-If you don’t mind,” he added quickly.

Martin smiled at him. “No,” he said, snuggling closer into Jon’s chest, “I don’t mind at all.”

Not everything with dating Jon was easy, or simple, but all of it was worth it. Jon was fascinating, and beautiful, and doing ordinary things like kissing and cuddling him was an exercise all on its own. Martin very much doubted he would have lugged seawater back and forth from the ocean for just anyone. And when he woke up the following morning with his fingers pruning and a crick in his neck, but with Jon still wrapped securely around him as though Martin were a pearl, Martin didn’t regret any of it in the least.

If there were someone around, they would have heard his questionable song choice for the four-minute trip from his apartment to meet the deliveryman and back again. Not that that trip required music.

However, consider that the brain could think thousands of thoughts in four minutes, and the chances of those all being pleasant thoughts are minuscule. Why take that chance? Why not drown them all out?

DING the sliding doors opened. Alex stepped out with a bounce in his step set in-time with the backbeat of the chorus playing in his ears.

Coming from around the corner where the mailroom was, Y/N brushed past him in a flash of blue clothing. She did not seem to see him.

But he saw her, like a Where's Wally game he was not aware he was playing. He took out one of his earbuds, slipping it in his pocket. Alex was determined to be normal: to make up for the initial awkwardness of their first meeting.

Y/N walked past the lift and started for the stairs. She was on the fifth or sixth step.

"Red!" called Alex.

"Hmm? Oh, hello," she said, smiling.

Y/N's bright expression faltered a smidge as she relinquished her phone to him. It was an older model but still a smartphone: no passcode: no apps other than those built-in. Her wallpaper was a picture of Sammy and her on a nature walk. 

Alex’s prominent adam's apple jumped. A pain like indigestion or like guilt stabbed him in the stomach.��After plugging in his number, he took an extra second to double-check it and add some personal flair.

She scoffed, "You should go get your pizza."

It would not be the first or fifth time Alex had forgotten about a deliveryman, and – while he would let his extra-large go stone-cold before willingly break off a conversation with her – it was apparent Y/N was itching to get somewhere.

"Bye.” Y/N disappeared up the stairs.

Alex balanced the extra-large pizza box in one hand. Never having worked in food service, his confidence in doing so was even lower than his regular self-confidence. With his other hand, he patted himself down, looking for the key to his apartment. He cursed at himself for having locked it out of habit when he left.

There was muffled shouting coming from inside – sounding both playful and angry. It took a single step through the door for Alex to recognize the source of the shouting.

George was in his bedroom watching a video back without his headphones on.

Both men sat in silence, shoving slices of pizza into their mouth like it was a competition. Like there was no other food in their apartment. Like they could not order another pizza. Like it proved something.

Breaking the silence, Alex swiped the sleeve of his sweatshirt across his mouth and asked, "Are we still filming that opening pokemon cards video tomorrow?"

"Yes. Just need someone to film the over-the-shoulder angle. Lewis is sick."

"Sick with what?"

I was thrown by his comment, whilst it was true I had not thought of, nor acknowledge this as least not in the way he pointed them out. This threeness threw the equation to an uncomfortable place.

I woke up with a sudden realisation that whilst I have not yet made anything I have been unconsciously trying to resolve this issue of three. This subconscious conversation that has been going on beneath the surface of my awareness were so loud and clear in my head this morning as I was waking up that it jolted me. I was troubled by this abrupt alignment of thought as I needed to fix this. This trouble or problem of three. Two I am fine with. Three is harder.

I was listening to Caroline McHugh's Ted talk yesterday on 'The Art of Being yourself' where she introduces two ideas which intrigued me. She talked about 'Interiority'. Interiority is her madeup word, she talked about the human ego living in two modes either inferiority, or superiority. She introduced interiority as a middle ground where one's ego can live in as a preferred alternative as superiority and inferiority two opposite ends of the scale are negative and toxic. This introduction of this seemingly third space took me back to Homi Bharbas introduction of the 'third space' or the hybryd space' in his book The Location of Culture.

The second thing Caroline McHugh said that caught my attention was when she said she was a 'womanist' not a feminist. I love this, though I don't yet know what this has to do with my work, still I wanted to tug that somewhere in here so I don't forget it.

The alignment that came to me this morning was triggered by this talk of Caroline McHughs. This interiority as a probable 'third space'. The existence of three cultures in my work as Dane Mitchell pointed out, and the equation being moved from a binary space to a complex politically charged space was not what I desired. In fact in my interview for my BFA entry where Noel Ivanoff was present I particularly pointed out that one place I did not want my work to exist was in the 'political' setting as far as Art goes.

However as these thought were firing up the aligning of these ideas, a statement Henry Symond made a few years ago now in one of his lectures came back to me. In his introduction statement he said 'everything is political from the things we buy to the food we eat'. This brought a sudden connection of my process to politics and it bugged me. I hate politics.

This 'hate of politics' alarmed me as I was waking up. This uncomfortable disturbing feeling in the pit of my stomach forced me to look at the idea of a binary equation. I like the nature of a binary resolution. The two opinions, the negative and positive, the left and right, the up or down. The introduction of a third voice, a third space, though it may be a comfortable solution to the tension that two opposing ideas can cause. I find it easier to work in this tension and creating my own third space hence the title of my show in 2020 're-tension', a three culture tension is not so easy to resolve.

The point of all this, was this. I woke up with this clear determination to push my thoughts and ideas and my making process past these binaries. And back to a place of origin. This is in a way, a form of displacing the third space as there is three cultures to consider. However in the politics of nations a nation is globally represented by its government. Its government speak as a singular voice of representation, this could be considered as a form of resolving the duality if this nations identity. Whilst this throws up alot of issues it is an option that is presented if I consider why and how I came to be in country in terms of its political history as a nation in the world among other nations.

Going back to this place of origin or birth place of emerging is where I want to speak from. I love Homi Bharbas third space. This new place that is created and was born out of colonial times. He himself was having to enter a place where binary definitions did not fit or give acknowlegdement to the real impact of colonialism or the plight of immigrants (as he had move to London to study). As they; foreigners enter a culture outside of their own. A place where the displacements forces readaptations of traditions thus creating new forms of identity born out of the need to survive and thrive in a new home of arrival.

These ideas caused me to think about the Treaty of Waitangi. The treaty is to me a binary document. It creates and declares NZ to be a nation made up of 2 nations, everyone else who comes into NZ remains a secondary foreigner the Crown being the primary of course.

This triggered this thoughts that for the past few months I have been trying to resolve. This idea of being home yet a forever a foreigner. Everywhere I go in this land, I am constantly reminded of this status, of being a foreigner. This 'fireigner' identity. This 'home but not my land' place where I find myself in, also led to the need to resolve another politically created narrative.

Samoa was ruled by NZ. In 1962 Samoa was granted its independence, whilst NZ was in Samoa its colonial rule of Samoa gave way to the Mau movement, which was using passive resistance to oppose colonial rule and occupation of Samoa by NZ forces. And it led to the death and killing of one of Samoas prominent chiefs.

The day of his death in history is known as

Black Saturday, one NZ policemen and 11 Samoans were killed.

The NZ government after Samoa was granted its independence a 'Treaty of

Friendship' was signed between Samoa and NZ whereby Samoa was granted a quota where Samoans can immigrate to live and work permanently in NZ.

This treaty or agreement is the gate I entered NZ through.

This coming into a place where tension already exists and through a agreement that is politically manufactured where, I legally have a place yet in a national level am not really welcomed. This tension is what I woke up this morning, aware that I was trying resolve it. I wanted to push my ideas either forward to a contemporary space where the narrative it creates is in a manufactured or industrialised zone. To speak into the now of my existence in the land or to go back.

The going back to a place of origin. This idea that everything came from somewhere else. In the Christian understanding, humans originated from God. The human spirit existed with God before it embodied human flesh. This thought and idea of 'things having come from somewhere else, and that things had a life before' was so prominent in my thoughts this morning so much so that before I opened my eyes I was already fully charged.

While taking physics in high school. I was told that matter cannot be destroyed. It can only be changed in terms of its state. E.g wood when burnt turns to ashes, but ashes is a different atomic structure from wood, as well as in all decomposition when things die they turn back to soil therefore everything techniqually still exist but only in an altered state.

This chain of thought happened in my sleep. It was like I had been plugged into something whilst sleeping and I woke up with my brain completely conscious of the place I wanted to explore. The 'life before' the history of pre-existence' of an object or materials. I want to take a step back and look at the materials I use and consider what life they lived before this. This pre-encounter existence was so exciting that I sat up and started writing.

This jumbled up mass of entangled thoughts is so exciting yet so huge, so complex that it brought me back to my usual place of beginnings. 'The ideas are again too big, too conceptual, too in the air with no place to land let alone begin' zone.

One thing I can say though, this was such an exciting chain of thought that I am all fired up to go. This led to, what I now need to resolve, which is 'where am I going and what am I making?' What does all of this mean and with regards to what I am going to make? Where to from here?

Of course now I need to stop. Pause, take one simple part and begin with that. As the vast ocean that these ideas represent is too vague unattainable and are 'pie in the sky' unless I can connect them to the work. Which means already I need to edit, strip back somethings and simplify. But before I get to that.

There is one thing I know I need to look at and its this. The idea of a third voice, the voice of the foreigner, what is that? How does that look or what does it sound like? This is just a side thought.

I had mentioned Caroline McHugh's 'womanist' comment. I like this idea. The idea of the voice of a woman, not a female but a woman. The identity of a woman, as an art maker, a nurturer of families, of identities whilst she herself is an identity. This role or existence is charged with a different set of metaphors. The Maya Angelous 'Phenominally Phenominal Woman' and exploration of a woman as concept perhaps and her place in the work. And

taking this back to a relevant place in regards to where I am, or where I was placed after the 2020 show. The end of year show, connects to this chain of thoughts as it brings me back to the very basic yet profound place of 'woman's work'. The handmade craft, and the gendered allocation of such a practice. This handicraft, instead of handcrafted, and the unspoken yet present disrespect directed at this way of making is a tension I would really like to delve into this year.

I want to look at perhaps exploring the value systems of materials, and making processes. The handmade which is the handicraft versus the artisans, the handmade versus the handicraft, the manufactured versus the natural, the organic versus the raw, the found and the grown. Whilst these are presented as tensions and binaries at the moment, they are put only in this way to highlight and as a form of note-to-self to remind myself of the ideas I need to remember and keep in the forefront of my consideration once I start making.

A final thought. My interest at this point is purely not so much to consider an identity of sorts with regards to my place and role as a foreigner, my only desire is to find a way of discussing and voicing my ideas that are purely my own, informed by my place of origin and speaking into/from my now space of existence. I want to come to a place where a singular material or two can be utilised to speak as a representation of a single voice, my own.

By being born out of necessity in renowned recording studios such as Detroit’s Motown and United Sound Systems to accommodate amplifying emerging electric musical instruments — in particular electric guitars in the mid Sixties, the humble DI (Direct Input) box began by resolving a basic mismatch between electrodynamic guitar pickups and sensitive studio electronics. Even today, despite more modern DI boxes being far more sophisticated than those trailblazing ‘Motor City’ models, their primary function is still to take an unbalanced, high-impedance signal and convert it to a balanced, low-impedance signal, so running guitars or basses directly into mic preamps or sending signals over extended cable runs without losing volume and significant high-frequency information is possible. Progress breeds change, clearly, yet even up-to-date DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) recording setups can sometimes suffer from imperfections arising from trying to directly record an electric guitar or bass by plugging it in to an audio interface’s instrument input whose impedance is not necessarily as high as claimed. Consequently, the connected instrument in question’s pickups do not work as well as they should, so results in a poor-sounding direct recording. Time to buy a DI box, perhaps? Not necessarily, since SounDevice Digital has an alternative software solution. SounDevice Digital’s DIFIX deploys several sophisticated independent processes to level the sound and add a little analogue-style saturation so as to effectively work as a DI-box-emulating plug-in. Put it this way: with all the science effectively hidden behind a readily resizable photorealistic GUI (Graphical User Interface) that is as easy on the eye as it is easy to use, ultimately using it is hardly rocket science. Switch between BASS DI or GUITAR DI to change the internal algorithms to best fit the incoming signal when recording bass or guitar, with the former improving missing bass guitar frequencies while the latter is tuned to be used with electric or electro-acoustic guitar, then decide how much DIFIX should improve the signal using some simple self-explanatory controls — namely, INTENSITY (%), which blends the dry and wet signals (with the maximum — 100 — setting allowing only the processed signal to go to the output, while lower values add the original untreated signal to the blend); IN (dB) is basically a gain input (controlling how much signal is being fed into the DIFIX plug-in and how its processing will react, ranging from -24 to +24 decibels); and OUT (dB) boosts the output signal (by between -24 to +24 decibels).

DIFIX is intended, admittedly, as an accessible tool to assist anyone recording in home studios with low-cost audio interfaces, but bear in mind that those with access to more costly hardware DI boxes benefit from fixing the input here and there as well, where the question remains: not if but how much? It is important to get that first step right when recording a guitar track in a DAW, otherwise trying to make a bad-sounding guitar track better becomes a whole lot harder — if not impossible — task. Therefore, DIFIX should be inserted as the first plug-in on a guitar track to fix input imperfections, followed by any guitar and amp simulation plug-ins favoured by the user to shape their guitar tone. To be fair to DIFIX, while it can fix a lot — letting users salvage or remix old recordings, for example — with a few simple controls, anyone serious about direct recording with an audio interface should probably purchase a decent DI box and use it in combination with DIFIX.

But better still, SounDevice Digital’s DIFIX plug-in provides pre-eminent audio quality, utilising internal 64-bit processing, and can capably handle any sampling rate — right up to 192 kHz (or even higher). Having said that, it intelligently handles bypassing to ensure that there are no nasty clicks or harmful noises when automating the parameter and also compensates for latency by ensuring that the bypass states are perfectly in sync with each other. Glitch

“It was broken, and he had no want or need for broken things. “

A little drabble about the Riddler’s greatest failure.

It took him longer than he would have liked to admit to compile the code, if truth be told.  He had thought it would be a relatively simple task for a mind as brilliant as his, but as things turn out, teaching something how to think was a bit more difficult than he had anticipated.  Only a bit. Nothing was ever, ever too challenging for him.

This was to be his first foray into artificial intelligence, the precursor to something far greater.  As soon as he knew that this worked, that he had ironed out all the bugs, he could move on to the project he really wanted to tackle.  He glanced at the lines upon lines of code, compiled over countless hours, glanced once more at the robotic figure on the ground next to him, and began the upload.

The process was slow going.  He expected it to be.  The massive amount of data being transferred from one processor to another took time, and while he didn't have a ton of that, he certainly had enough for this.  He let the upload run its course, and he went about the rest of his day, working on deathtraps, adjusting blueprints, the usual odd jobs.  He even found time to dust off his chess board and play a game of chess against himself-- he won, of course.

By the time the transfer was complete, the initial excitement had waned somewhat.  He no longer had to be worried about his computer or the processor in the new machine overheating or catching fire, so all that was left was to boot the thing up...  And he knew that would work.  He wasn't a moron, after all.

It took almost a minute for the robot to flare to life, he noted with some annoyance-- perhaps he should have installed another processor after all...  Would it be able to keep up with organic impulses with the processing power it had now?  But then the machine began moving, righting itself from where it lay on its side on the floor, eyes searching the area, standing on all four legs...  It took a few steps, then turned to face him and--

SCREECH.

Well. That was unexpected.  He sighed, one hand coming up so fingers could pinch the bridge of his nose.  He should have used a better audio card.  He hadn't expected the thing to actually try to meow of its own accord, he had thought it would only do it when commanded.  Then again...  It was a cat.  Well, a robotic cat.  And since he had programmed it to be as close to an organic feline as possible, he supposed it should act with a certain...  Disregard.

He sat and watched it explore while he ate dinner, watched as it found the the “food” dish he had left out for it in a moment of whimsy, filled with spare nuts and bolts he couldn't foresee using anytime soon.  From there, it wandered over to the cat bed he had built as a wireless charging dock for it, then turned and pounced on one of the toys he had fashioned for it to play with.  It seemed he had succeeded in doing exactly what he set out to do-- creating an artificially intelligent cat.  Minus the small error with the voice, of course, but he could fix that just as soon as he ordered new parts.

It wasn't until later that night that things soured.  The cat-- he hadn't bothered to name it, because why should he-- was sitting in his lap, purring quietly, then it looked up at him, still purring, and...

SCREECH.

But it didn't just make that horrific excuse for a meow.  It was still purring-- or trying to, and he could literally see the green lights that served as its eyes flicker as its whole body stiffened and extended, and it literally toppled off his lap.

Oh.

That was a problem.

He let out a defeated sigh and turned back to his laptop, opening up the code to peer at it again.  He was tempted to kick the machine, send it flying across the room, but he didn't want to scuff his shoes.  He couldn't have made a mistake, there was simply no plausible way, and he knew cats didn't naturally purr and meow at the same time, so maybe it was a virus?

But how could it have gotten a virus?  It wasn't even Wi-Fi enabled, and there definitely wasn't a virus on his laptop-- he had specifically designed it and built it to make that nigh-impossible.  The only person who could possibly dream of getting past his firewall was, well, him. He couldn't have made a mistake.  He had spent hours, no, days working on this programming.  He had checked it and re-checked it, there was absolutely no possible way there was an error that caused that to happen....

The robotic feline as back on it's feet, purring and rubbing against his legs, but he ignored it.  He had to figure this out.  He had to know what he'd done.  Or hadn't done.  He had to fix this, and fix it now.

He thought he found the error at one point, about an hour later.  He made an adjustment, plugged the cat back into his computer, re-uploaded everything...  And now the damned thing couldn't even walk.  It moved one leg, then another, then another, then the last, giving it some sort of strange, stunted hobble...  He reverted to the previous programming and went back to work.

It wasn't until he woke up with his cheek pressed into the keys of his laptop that he decided to give up.  He had been at it for...  Oh, hell.  If the clock on his computer was right (and he knew for a fact that it was), and judging by the way his body felt, he had slept for maybe four hours, which left thirty-six hours of unaccounted-for time in which he must have been frantically trying to fix this stupid cat.  Thirty-six hours, and not a single thing had helped.  Quite the contrary, everything he had thought may be a fix served only to cause another problem, or make the thing shut down completely...  All that work, wasted, all those materials, wasted....

Purr.

And there was the damned thing again, up on his desk, nuzzling his face and purring, pawing at his hand.  He reached out automatically and rubbed its head, which only made the purring intensify.  Maybe this stupid glitch was a problem for another day.  After all, it seemed as though the feline did function as intended, apart from this strange glitch and the horrific shriek that resulted from him not bothering to program in a proper meow...Maybe some decent sleep would help the solution appear more readily.

He spent the better part of a week working off-and-on on attempting to find a solution for this stupid glitch.  The cat, however, seemed unbothered, and spent the time prowling his safe house, doing what he could only assume were cat things, interrupted only by the need to charge its battery and that damned glitch, which he quickly noted seemed to happen more often when the battery was running low.  In fact, it happened so often in the hour immediately preceding it retreating to its charging dock that he began referring to it as a glitch instead of a cat-- and it was at that point that the robot, however unintentionally, gained a name. And yes, Glitch was a stupid name, but this was a stupid cat.  He would fix the problem and get rid of it, and if he couldn't fix it, he would just deactivate it and move on.

He made it as far as deactivating it one day, a few weeks later. Believing himself to be at his limit, all his resources exhausted, he turned the thing off and gathered up its supplies, leaving it in a corner to be forgotten.  He had failed.  He had failed, and no one could know about it.  He would destroy it, get rid of it before anyone ever even knew it existed, and try again with something different, something less stupid, something that wouldn't bother him at inopportune moments, looking for attention, something that wouldn't insist on curling up at the foot of his bed every night, or deliberately worm its way into his lap while he was trying to work...

The house seemed quiet.  Had he actually gotten attached to the stupid thing?  No, he couldn't have.  It was broken, and he had no want or need for broken things.  There was absolutely no reason he was staring at it now, no reason he was walking over to the corner where it lay discarded, definitely no reason he was gently scratching the deactivated machine's chin...

Damn it.

He sighed.  “This changes nothing, Glitch.  I still don't like you.”

But even as he hooked the machine to his laptop once more to reinstall the programming he had wiped from it, he knew that the statement was a lie.

It just snowed again here lol so I feel the cold. Could you do a fic where Jason gets locked out of the apartment/apartment building (my apartment building has doors outside that you go through and if you don’t have the key you’re fucked) and Colby finds him? Maybe hypothermia for Jason?

The first day of the new semester is dedicated to working out kinks.  Jason knows that.  He doesn’t expect to receive any homework as he waltzes around campus, every class releasing early after a casual overview of the syllabus.  

One benefit of being a halfway through his junior year is the lighter schedule.  He’s only on campus twice a week now, but, as he’s quickly learning, the aforementioned lightness is subjective.  Tuesdays and Thursdays have him running from seminar to lecture to lab from 8 in the morning to 5 at night.  And those are start times.  It’s well past 7 when he finally trudges back to his car to drive home.  

“Flop day, my ass,” Jason mutters, turning on the radio and scanning until he finds something that isn’t a commercial.  He’d been irrationally proud of himself this morning, learning before the school day even commenced.  When I’m a teacher, he’d written across the top of the first page of a fresh spiral notebook, don’t start coursework on first day.  Set expectations.  Expect schedule changes.  Then he’d missed the professor’s introduction because he was too busy beating himself up over the two iterations of the word “expect” so close together.  

Jason can’t believe how tired he is.  Some of it is misinformation, his brain attempting to process his surroundings and doing it badly.  It’s barely past the dinner hour, but dark enough to be midnight.  He may not have any reading to do when he gets home, but he’s still been gone for more than 8 hours.  Exhaustion is a natural response, even if it isn’t helpful or expected.  

A flutter of panic runs through his stomach as he thinks of what’s in store for him tomorrow.  He’s starting his first run of student teaching, meeting his mentor and the principal of the local high school bright and early tomorrow morning.  Will he be able to get enough sleep?  It’s so late…

No, he reminds himself.  It’s not.  The car clock says it’s 7:26.  Twelve hours before he has to be somewhere again.  Twelve hours, what a relief.  Or should he be thinking only 12 hours?  Is that really enough time?  Does he have a shirt to wear that isn’t horribly wrinkled?  There’s enough time to iron, isn’t there?  Do they even have an iron?

And so it goes.  For almost half an hour.  Traffic is stop-and-go, a mix of late commuters and folks on their way to and from the smattering of restaurants ringing the campus.  Jason thinks about stopping to pick up something to eat, but he lacks the motivation to even pull into a drive-thru.  He’ll have to watch that.  make sure it doesn’t become a habit.

Eventually Jason reaches the parking lot of the apartment complex.  He pulls his Corolla besides Mike’s frosty Rav-4, proof that she’s been home for hours already.  If only he could count on her to cook dinner.  He laughs to himself, wishing Colby was the one who got off mid-afternoon.  But alas, his partner is stuck in the awkward phase of proving himself and working long shifts in between the holiday and regular retail seasons, while his stubborn sister is inside, probably reading with headphones on and oblivious to Jason’s imminent arrival.  Jason shakes his head.  At least Mike doesn’t take up much space.

He slings his bag over his shoulder and runs toward the building, skidding slightly on the ice around the edges of the lot.  He swipes the RFID fob on his keyring across the sensor situated on the other side of the glass door.  Jason doesn’t hear the requisite beep, but he assumes his chattering teeth have just drowned out the soft sound.  He hadn’t thought he’d need gloves and a hat when the only time he’d be spending outside would be spent walking briskly, but he wishes he had them now.  He reaches for the door handle and yanks, but it stays resolutely shut.

“The hell?” Jason mutters.  He swipes his keyring again, listening closely.  Again he hears only silence.  “Hm.”  He cups his hands around his eyes like binoculars and looks through the glass, trying to find the source of the problem.  It’s hard to see in the dark, but the kiosk with the sensor seems to be glowing with its usual pinprick of orange light.  

Jason swipes a third time, looking and listening this time.  Still nothing.  He gives the door a good smack with the pinky side of his fist.  The warm brightness shakes, and the jagged edges of something papery tremble into existence.  A leaf or a gum wrapper or something, trapped between the glass and the sensor, perfectly positioned to interrupt whatever invisible means the key fob uses to communicate with the kiosk.  

“Ugh.  Fuck.”  Jason smacks the door again, then stupidly pulls on the handle.  Hitting it won’t unlock it, he knows.  But the situation is frustrating.  Jason looses a few more choice words, then slowly pulls in a deep breath.  He blows out a cloud of steam.

There is a simple solution, though it’s mortifying.  Jason digs in his pocket for his phone to call Mike and ask to be let in.  He feels like a dog scratching at the door.  He taps his phone’s dark screen, but nothing happens.  At first he wonders if his mind is playing tricks again, since the door just pulled the same one, but then the realization hits him and his stomach turns to a bucket of ice.  He ran out of battery before stepping into his last class.  

It’s his own fault for leaving his headphones plugged in with Pandora streaming for an entire class period.  Jason tells himself he’ll carry a charger with him at all times from now on, but it does nothing to fix the current problem.  “God fucking dammit, Mike!” he yells, pacing back and forth in front of the door.  “Decide to go check the mail or something!”  

But she won’t.  Jason knows she won’t.  Mike is… lazy is the wrong word, but Jason’s shivering seems to be interrupting his thoughts with sharp spikes like those produced by a seismograph.  Sparing.  That’s more accurate.  If something isn’t her problem, she’ won’t volunteer to make it her problem.  Once she’s safely in the apartment for the night, there’s little chance Mike will step out of her bedroom, let alone the front door.  

They originally chose this complex for its safety features, but now Jason hates them.  The 10-foot brick wall surrounding the grid of row houses is too steep to scale, and if he tries, he’ll only mangle his fingers.  He imagines drops of blood running down his palms and freezing before they hit the ground.  Jason feels faintly nauseated.  If he pukes, that will probably freeze, too.  At least his stomach is empty.

“No,” Jason says, trying to determine if it’s worth it to explain.  His brain gets hung up halfway through.  “Did you walk here?”

“Nah, Gil dropped me off halfway down the block,” Colby says.  He uses his thumb to stroke Jason’s red nose.  “Who are you and what did you do with my boyfriend?  Since when are you worried about me before you’re worried about you?  Not that, like, that’s a bad thing.  It’s just a ‘you’ thing.”

“Sheesh.”  Jason tries to roll his eyes, but he feels faint again.  

“Here, let’s go inside.”  Colby starts to pull him up.

“No, you gotta, um, you gotta…”  Jason can’t stop stuttering.  “You gotta call Mike.”

“Why?”  Colby looks at him like he’s gone nuts.

“Don’t ask.  Long story.”  It’s not actually that long, but Jason shakes his head anyway.  “Just do it.”

“Ok?”  Colby takes off one mitten and pulls his phone out of his coat pocket.  “But I get the full explanation later, right?”

“Yeah,” Jason agrees without thinking.  “But call her fast.  I’m fucking cold.”

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #233 - National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Spoilers Below

Have I seen it before: Yes

Did I like it then: Yes.

Do I remember it: Yes.

Did I see it in theaters: No.

Format: Blu-ray

1) There are five theatrical films in the Vacation franchise, this is the only one I’ve seen. I’ve never seen the need to see the other ones, honestly. This one’s already good enough.

2) The opening animation over which the credits is a strong start to the film. It establishes a classic Christmas vibe and silly/slapstick humor. There’s nothing particularly PG-13 about the animation, just PG. It’s not raunchy or rude, just funny. I think that’s an important thing because it’s what makes Christmas Vacation as good as it is. Not the occasional raunch (which is very limited, I think) but instead the silly family elements. Not to mention it sets up a great original song.

3) The opening carols scene in the car with the Griswold clan does well to establish that dynamic. Clark is a little TOO enthusiastic but it’s sincere, Ellen is supportive, and the kids are kind of over it all.

4) This first encounter with the truckers is very strong. It shows two of the films best comedic elements: Clark’s ability to take things too far and then the build of it. Each choice makes the situation worse and worse leading to an inevitable, unexpected, hysterical climax to the scene.

5) I love Ellen.

Ellen: “Clark, stop it! I don’t wanna spend the holidays DEAD!”

6) Honestly, there are a lot of great little dialogue exchanges in the movie. I dig it.

Ellen: “Clark.”

Clark: “Yes honey?”

Ellen: “Audrey’s frozen from the waist down.”

Clark: “That’s all part of the experience, honey.”

7) When you make a comedy, you HAVE to have a good sense of humor. That’s the entire point! This film succeeds there. It’s odd, ridiculous, slapstick, and silly. Born from escalating problems and crazy “solutions” as well as a nice element of absurdity humor. Clark’s sticky fingers, everything on Christmas Eve, the sled, it all lends itself to this idea.

8) Julia Louise Dreyfus is in this movie. That is all.

9) Of course Chevy Chase is great in this movie, he’s freaking Chevy Chase! But Beverly D’Angelo is equally as good.

While the straighter of the two actors, the one who sees more clearly, D’Angelo gets a number of clever and hysterical moments in the film. She has a great chemistry with Chevy Chase but helps to make her Ellen MORE than Mrs. Griswold. She’s her own character, full of life and personality, patience and flaws, just truly wonderful.

10) I always like that Clark has a Tasmanian Devil coffee mug. It speaks to his fun energy as a character.

11) I never really got why Clark lies to Mary about not being married. It gives Chase a funny outlet to play flustered, but there’s nothing in this film which suggests to me he’d cheat on Ellen.

12) The arrival of the extended Griswold clan is perfectly done. A clear sense of family conflict and insanity is conveyed not only by the performances but the quick editing and off kilter camera angles. It’s very well done.

Audrey: “Do you sleep with your brother? Do you know how sick and twisted that is?”

15) Much of this film benefits from a pacing that allows us to check in with the whole family here and there, supporting its heart and characters.

16) I actually analyzed the scene where Chevy Chase falls off the roof for a Physics for Filmmakers class. The class was horrible but I had fun with the project. I’d share some of what I wrote but it’s long and boring. Basically the gist of it is the ice can’t travel to the gutter like that but also the velocity of the gutter changes between shots.

17) I don’t know why, but my family always quotes this line like crazy.

Margot: “And why is the carpet wet, TOD?”

Tod: “I don’t KNOW Margot!”

18) Clark’s failed lights attempt.

There are two things which stand out in this scene: Clark’s in-laws are freaking awful and his immediate family are great. The in laws just relentlessly mock Clark leading Audrey to stand up for her dad.

Audrey: “He worked really hard, Grandma.”

I love that. I love seeing Audrey getting to show some real love and support for her dad instead of being sidelined as a stereotypical teenage girl. It’s freaking great.

19) Clark in the attic.

Firstly, Clark’s mother in law is an idiot. “Oh, the ladder to the attic is open. It must’ve just fallen or something, there can’t be ANY way a person is up there. I shouldn’t check or anything.” Jerk.

But most importantly, the attic scene is the best representation of the film’s heart. Holiday movies need a good heart to it, good emotion, otherwise they’re just a lazy cash grab. This film’s heart, its focus on family and familial love, are one of the reasons it has held up as well as it has 28 years later. Clark’s sentiment over watching old home movies, supported by a great Ray Charles song, is one of the best parts of the film.

22) Cousin Eddie just showing up when he does helps give the film an extra bit of energy to propel it in its last hour. Honestly if we had stuck with what was going on with no change or development it might’ve gotten a little dull, but Eddie is just a perfect source of fun family conflict.

23) Some of Clark’s asides when Eddie shows up are just freaking hysterical.

Clark: “If I woke up tomorrow with my head seen to the carpet I wouldn’t be more surprised than I am right now.”

24) Randy Quaid as Cousin Eddie.

Eddie is this film’s ultimate scene stealer. Quaid, reprising his role from the first Vacation film, plays Eddie as totally sincere and honest. Yes he’s a dumbass, yes he causes problems, but there is not a hint of malice in his performance and that’s important. You need to like Eddie, despite his idiocy, you need to root for him along with the other characters. He’s a sweet guy, he just causes a lot of problems, and he fits perfectly with the rest of the cast.

25) Brian Doyle Murray as Mr. Shirley is a great Scrooge-like character in this film. You understand he’s pretty much a pill before you even learn what he did about Christmas bonuses.

26) The saucer sledding scene is crazy fun, but I never got how Cousin Eddie and the kids were able to see Clark go as far as he did. Like, we see him go through woods where no one else is, across a highway, and into a WalMart. And they’re just up on the hill reacting?

27) Clark’s pool fantasy.

The key part to this fantasy is not the presence of a pool, but how happy it makes his family. Clark doesn’t want to let anyone down. He wants to be a traditional patriarch and provide for his family. To not succeed 100% feels like a failing to him, that’s why the pool is so important to him.

28) The conversation Clark and Ruby Sue have together about Santa Claus continues to show off the film’s heart but mores how it balances heart and humor. There’s some crass language mixed in but it doesn’t undermine the emotion of the scene.

29) And now it’s Christmas Eve, and EVERYTHING on Christmas Eve is just one big problem after another. The night descends further and further into chaos before the movie is over which is truly freaking great!

30) Aunt Bethany and Uncle Lewis are a great late addition to the film. For animation fans, the actress who plays Aunt Bethany is also Betty Boop and Uncle Lewis is Dr. Finklestein from The Nightmare Before Christmas. They’re totally nuts, nonsensical, and just fun to watch.

31) All the cat-in-the-box movement is done by Chevy Chase.

32) That Turkey is SO dry!

All the crunching is so uncomfortably funny, leading into a hysterical extended dinner table scene which is a lot of fun.

33) Honestly these next batch of notes are going to be commenting on how each gag works so well. For example: the dad cat gag, for some reason, is extremely funny!

This scene is so freaking great. The entire film set it up, we’ve been waiting for this bonus. Meaning the surprise of it is as great for the audience as it is for Clark. The big setup, how much is riding on the bonus, means the fall is even greater. And Chevy Chase’s rant is one of the greatest movie rants EVER! I love it.

35) Clark’s following mania is great to watch, specifically the hilarity and insanity of the squirrel chase.

Clark: “This is a full blown four alarm Holiday emergency here! We’re going to press on and we’re gonna have the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny FUCKING Kaye!”

42) And despite the movie ending on a joke, the ending does have a nice sweetness to it. A sincerity about the madness of the holiday spirit and its equal success.

Christmas Vacation is a holiday treat that grows better with time. The humor is supported by a strong cast and equally strong heart. Chevy Chase is obviously great, but other cast members such as Beverly D’Angelo and Randy Quaid get their time to steal the show.
