Simranjeet Kaur says she was already struggling to make ends meet when her employer allegedly didn't pay her the wages she was owed from her job at an Ontario transportation company.
The Brampton resident says she's owed a little more than $7,000 for four months of work.
That money is just a fraction of the approximately $9 million in owed wages that advocates say employers in Ontario failed to pay out in the 2021-22 fiscal year, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Finance. It was collected through freedom of information (FOI) requests by two Toronto-based organizations — Downtown Legal Services and Parkdale Community Legal Services.
Experts and those affected by wage theft are concerned that the exploitative practice of not paying employees has become the norm, and they worry it's getting worse. [...]

The National UN Volunteers-India is proud to launch the "Creating Forest and Cleaning Forest" initiative, a program dedicated to environmental conservation and community involvement. The event will be inaugurated by Shri. Simranjeet Singh Khalon, IAS, Ramanathapuram District, on 12th February 2025 at Annai Saraswati Women's Green Park in Ramanathapuram, starting at 9:30 AM.
This ten-day program, running from 12th to 21st February 2025, aims to engage a diverse group of participants, including school and college students, Bharat Scouts, National Service Scheme (NSS) members, ECO club members, Indian Red Cross volunteers, National Green Corps members, medical college students, law college students, engineering college students, and UN Volunteers-India.
Under the capable leadership of Mr. Subash Srinivasan, Special Sub Inspector of Police, Economic Offences Wing, Ramanathapuram District, and the UN Designate, the initiative will focus on the creation and cleaning of forest areas. The Green Umbrella Movement, Ramanathapuram, will provide crucial support to this effort.
Participants will be involved in a variety of activities, including planting trees, cleaning up forest areas, and raising awareness about environmental conservation. The program seeks to foster a sense of responsibility and commitment towards preserving natural habitats and promoting sustainable practices.
The National UN Volunteers-India is committed to making a positive impact on the environment and inspiring future generations to take active roles in environmental conservation.
