The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revealed that a "SIM swapping" attack was responsible for its recent account breach on the social media platform X. This attack led to the creation of a fake post announcing the approval of Bitcoin ETFs and caused a significant increase in the cryptocurrency's price. 👤

In a SIM swapping attack, a cybercriminal obtains control of a person's phone number through techniques like social engineering. This allows them to intercept calls and messages, including two-factor authentication codes, intended for the victim. In the SEC's case, the attacker gained control of the phone number linked to its X account and reset the account's password. The SEC had disabled multifactor authentication on the account earlier but reenabled it after discovering the breach. 🔒

The SEC is working with law enforcement to investigate how the attacker discovered the phone number associated with its X account and convinced the mobile carrier to perform the SIM swap.
