Thoughts: I enjoyed this duology more than I thought I would. Lark's writing makes it easy to slip into Mara's mindset, and sometimes escapism is all I want out of a novel. In no sense do the characters ever feel like real people doing things that real people would do, but that's fine. I enjoyed the sort of larger than life aspect of it, and the conflict between Cole and Shaw comes to a tense conclusion here. While there aren't a lot of surprises, it has a nicely visual aspect, which is one of the things I liked about this duology as a whole. I feel like I can actually see Mara and Cole's art at times, and their work brings further dimension to their characters.

This novel also takes an unexpected detour into an examination of abusive relationships, particularly in Mara's childhood. I was expecting Shaw to be the major threat--and in the present timeline, he is--but man, Mara's mother and stepfather give him a run for his money on most evil character of the books. I'm skeptical about the conclusions Mara comes to about needing a monster to love her in order to feel safe. In a real world application, I think this just leads women to additional abusive relationships in adulthood, but since this is fiction, it doesn't have any obligation to be realistic. Mara and Cole are a nice complement to one another, and I'll likely revisit these eventually for their entertainment value.

This book was a decent read, but very much could have been told all in one book rather than two.

Mara’s development was very much to my liking. I like that she went from being a victim to taking matters into her own hands. And Cole! This guy is a grade A psycho but we love him for it.

And though these books are short, don’t worry. All loose ends are tied up with a pretty red bow.

* Cole is way too controlling. Dude might be hot, but he’s not about to pick out what I eat, drink, wear, etc…

* That shower scene 👀 😂

* Wow. Joanna’s being a bitch.

* Damn. Cole’s first victim was his own uncle. Dude deserved it tho 🤷🏻‍♀️

* Man, her stepfather Randall and her mom Tori are a real piece of work. Disgusting.

* wtf crawled up officer Hawk’s ass? Dude needs to chill.

* Yes! They chose Cole’s idea. Shaw is gonna spiral lol.

* I fucking knew that reporter would find Mara’s mom. What a bitch.

* Ugh. The stepdad is gross too.

* And now they’re gonna go after Shaw? Not much left of the book and I still need something to happen to the mom and the cop who keeps stalking Cole.

It wasn’t just that, every scene, event, or happening in this story seems to take you on a wild ride, twisting and turning, so you’re never quite sure where you are heading or where you’ll end up. The heat and chemistry and attraction between the characters, that is an actual palpable thing, it radiates from the pages and scorches you in it’s path. Absolutely counting down the days until we get the conclusion to these two!!!

Her name is Cal and she’s a sort of composite of the works of John Steinbeck, particularly East of Eden, which was pretty influential on my young mind when I read it back in the day. If I had to describe her it would be “arrogant but well-meaning,” the sort of person who would rather buy an expensive gift earned through hard labor and cunning business practice than give something cheap and homemade. My entire vision for her is that people perceive her as shallow or vain for this, when in reality that couldn’t be further from the truth, and that leads to the sort of main conflict of her story.

I won’t get into the nitty-gritty, but Cal’s genuinely supportive of her team. She believes they will do the right thing with encouragement, and does her best to provide it, even if she does come off as mean or back-handed. Her canto revolves around reconciling with a family that fell apart because of rampant communication issues and projecting one’s vision of the ideal over someone else’s. Let’s just say, she mouthed off a fair bit in the past, and ended up shattering a lot of hearts as a result. She wants to try to mend things as best she can even if they’ll never be the same again. But to do so would require her to actually state her feelings to the people she cares about, instead of lashing out when frustrated or hiding behind her uncaring facade.

Thoughts: On a scale of zero to Joe Goldberg, how much do I hate this main character?

Do you ever have a lot of high quality books on your shelf that you're looking forward to reading, but your brain goes no let's have something trashy first? That's this book (affectionate). Since I wasn't expecting high quality literature from the dark romance genre, I enjoyed this quite a bit. Lark's writing is a step above many of the genre in the sense that it's largely invisible. I'm not pulled out of the story by bad grammar, excessive descriptions, or strange turns of phrase. It's nicely paced in introducing us to the main characters and nudging their development along from one utterly fucked up encounter to another.

After three seasons of You (2018), the Goldberg scale is my new favorite game to play with dark protagonists. Cole is probably about a five. I don't hate him, but I don't have any particular feelings about him either. I enjoyed his development from being willing to walk away and let a girl die right in front of him to dubiously protecting said girl, and I liked that he wasn't sure whether he should kill her himself for most of the book (although, obviously, he's not since, unlike You, this is a romance novel). I enjoyed Mara well enough as a female lead, and while it does fall heavily into "not like other girls" territory, she's tough and doesn't spend half the novel whining, crying, or otherwise freaking out, which is always nice.

The art aspects of the novel provide an interesting dimension as well, and the rivalry between Cole and Shaw sets up some nice tension. I think Shaw is a bit underused as a villain, in fact. He sets things in motion and then vanishes for large chunks of time. It took me most of the book to realize that plot wasn't going to wrap up here, and this first novel is more focused on developing the connection between Cole and Mara. It's not a bad thing, since I enjoyed spending time in both of their perspectives, but it's not the most plot-heavy book. I'm interested to see how the final showdown plays out in the next novel.

I don’t know what it is about this book that is keeping me from giving it five stars. I liked it, I did, but… something felt off.

It’s definitely a fast-paced obsession on Cole’s part, but it takes the entire book until they’re whamming and bamming lol.

The whole rival artists/serial killers trying to one up one another is fun, until it isn’t. Shaw is definitely a psycho, but his craziness pushes Cole to act out in a way he’s never been before so that’s a plus. And poor Mara is stuck in the middle.

There’s a slight cliffhanger and I’m definitely glad I have book two already on my shelf, ready to be read.

* Two serial killers who are artists and hate one another. Yeah, this is gonna end well haha.

* wtf. Who kidnapped Mara?! And then pierced her nipples before slitting her wrists… that’s messed up.

* Ohhh. So Cole’s rival Shaw kidnapped Mara and left her for dead. What a dick.

* And Cole’s an even bigger dick for just stepping over her and walking away 😂

* Oh shit. She escaped.

* How the hell is she back at work like nothing happened?!

* Shaw thinks she’s dead and Cole is pissed to see her alive because she saw his face. I can’t wait until Shaw sees her alive and breathing.

* He’s a party sniffer. Fucking weirdo. And he came all over her dirty underwear. Mara’s gonna be so confused and possibly grossed out 😂

* Holy shit. Cole formally introduced himself and she’s panicking.

* How the fuck did she go from frothing at the mouth angry at him to showing him different brunch combos to try lol.

* “I wanted you. Genuinely. Because I admire you, and you attract me. I wanted to fuck you. But you don’t tell me what to do.”

* Lmaooo. Dude could have gotten his dick sucked but he embarrassed her so she fucked another guy in front of a camera she knew he’d be watching from. I love her.

* Holy shit. The way they tattooed one another.

* The way Cole is protective over Mara. God, so hot. Idc if he murders people lol.

* Shaw just had to be a cockblock.

* God, I can’t believe Cole fell for Shaw’s trap. wtf dude. And now he wants to kill Mara before Shaw does.. ? No. Absolutely not.

* Damn. He really tied her to the table and fucked her over and over. That was fun.

* Damn. Shaw killed one of the roommates 😬 and dumbass Mara opened her mouth. Now she just looks stupid. Smh. Thank god I have book 2.

You do help out with Lu Lu World as it’s one of Lucifer’s passion projects and no one could believe how upset you were when Mammon created Loo Loo land, you almost put your exterminator skills to use but Lucifer stopped you and let Mammon have his way cause he didn’t want to argue with Mammon so you just had to let it go

You both do play music together as when you were both angels all you did was play music, duets and you can’t tell me you, Lucifer, and Charlie didn’t sing together once

You remember seeing Lucifer’s wings for the first time and how amazed you were as you kept complementing him and that just made his face all red and what made you stop was when he commented o how your wings could have been more pretty then his, you just smile at him

Now here you two have more of a bodyguard/ secretary and famous person kind of relationship even though he may not need it he likes keeping you around and that just help made his feelings grow for you
