If I can't draw, what am I? My skills feel like they are decreasing my writing skills, too. At this point, I'm waiting to die. My tablet pen no longer works even if it did, It would be unlikely that I post art again. I'm 18, been 18, barely 2 months. I saw a person that's 17 years old and had their own business. I just want to rot already. I can't do anything anymore. I want to quit it all that fantasy of creating my own games, fan merch, and commissions. My art skills are nothing special. My colors aren't bright, and the bodies look weird. I'm uncreative. I'm over all bland. I think I will drop art and go to college to become a licensed therapist. I don't know where to start, but I guess that's what I'll be doing. Srry, if I haven't been posting, my mental health is down the drain of this shit hole.

some ancient art and wips… i used to be literally unable to breathe because i’d cringe so hard at my older art. drawing is probably the roughest hobby i couldve chosen, given my perfectionist nature, and only now im trying to actually tackle the struggle of always thinking the next thing im gonna draw is gonna be an embarrassment. i am now well aware that is not the case and maybe, just maybe, if i got some chill my life would be much easier lmao but now that that’s done i wanna showcase some of the stuff i made two-three years ago i may not have finished but has that sort of vibe that makes me go ‘oh! now THATS crunchy art’ so. yeah take it i am sleep deprived what did i just type

so my apartment building got a notice board to post fire alarm tests and maintenance announcements and such. the building is pretty well-maintained, so we rarely get notices. the board is big and grey and to think it would be empty like that 99% of the time was a bland boring sin i just couldn't bear, so i vandalized the corner of its empty canvas with a teeny tiny Guy

and within a few days, there was a sudden addition from my one of my neighbors along with a Bunch of thumbtacks. this was an unexpected, but welcome surprise!

well there was still so much space, i figured i'd add another crumb to the art hoard. i'd been playing genshin that day so i drew my favorite grandpa

and like clockwork, new art manifested!! this person is gonna grow to be a great artist i know it. the detail in those stones? hell yeah that's cool.

we're two weeks into it. more neighbors have joined in with their artwork. who knew there were so many artists in my building?? we're onto somethin great here i just know it.

i haven't really done observation drawings in agesss tbh but i'd say the most important things is to get the bulk of it right first. ofc that's usually the case with basically everything but objects can get very weirdly shaped and detailed, especially at angles. i suggest starting from a loose outline, making sure the part where it rests on a surface looks ok. and then you can find detail within that more "controlled" space you created.

what's really gonna make an object look tangible isn't realism in rendering but a fairly sound structure, so when it comes to further detailing things i think showing volumes is more important than getting the surface minutiae down. it might be helpful to light your references in a way that makes the structure obvious.

btw on a meta level: this is kinda just my opinion but i believe what they're looking for with this is seeing you deal with "boring" subjects, as well as your experience with drawing from life. i wouldn't stress too much on making super realistic grapphite still lives for their own sake; i think it's important to show you can analyze a scene to recreate it, as well as your understanding of form. technique (how well can you handle your materials) is important too but honestly it's also just a "can you draw something that's not your favorite anime character?" test.

idk if this is helpful... luckily this sort of fundamental is in basically any art instruction book you can find, so i'd search on archive.org or something and just practice their advice for a bit. also: i had an observation drawing exam while applying, and it was a selection of fruits and vegetables drawn in colored pencil. fruit and veg isn't too complex shape-wise, but the variety in color and texture is both interesting to draw and a good way to showcase your technique. household objects like vacuum cleaners and chairs on the other hand are more complex in shape, so they're better candidates for simpler line drawings, that can show off both your line quality and confidence, and give you room for some stylization. i'd include a mix of both types on the portfolio ^_^
