This one, as most of my latest pieces, is a experiment with color pencils. I wish my pencils were smoother, as I feel I can see each stroke. I can’t expect much of the cheap pencils I have though. The Book of Lamentations continues with some examples that tie it to the previous and current book of printmaking process - the first plate is the Our Lady of Montevergine print that I was working on at the time. It was for the Etsy shop I was opening and is now up and running (link in bio) - the first sale I made was before I even listed it and was to an Eastern Orthodox priest working with the LGBT community. His print was a one off because he wanted his with touches of gold leaf. (The tradition with some gold leaf is that a layer of warm red clay is often applied as a base). Here I mapped that out with red spray paint that suddenly looked more soviet than I expected and the red version became my accidental favourite one of the image. I sold three of this image the week after the amazing Kitt Cherry (of Jesus in Love and QSpirit) published her recent article about this medieval legend - (usually straight-washed out of church history) of the Virgin rescuing a gay couple attacked and tied to a tree and left to die in snow. The next two are the rotatated crow images also toward the Etsy shop and the last one is simply Grizzly Geoff - for whom there is no explanation other than he was a gift from our lovely friends in Edinburgh and his gift tag ended up taking rebirth in my book. Tonight’s Sketch. Been a little busy job searching and taking summer classes (graphic design) so I’ve been itching to get back into drawing. Just a little something. You can slowly see the amount of time I spent on each sketch increasingly grow as you go from first to last 😂 Maybe I will post more sketches here. This blog is my digital sketchbook after all.

I had started to use the Book of Lamentations for keeping up with my responses to our current #liverpoolindependentartschool life drawing sessions on Zoom. @paulg.art and I have the chance to draw in these sessions (but it is not always easy to draw as a host rather than a patron because we need to multi task sometimes with advising on tech things, answering queries in chat etc). Paul does much of the organising but somehow usually manages a much better drawing than I do. Some of my drawings work and some don’t. This set include three attempts at the same pose - with the first in simple construction lines being my favourite and the fourth is a quick one of Molly on a page of further Loomis method research. Our main model here is again the excellent @thequeenofheartbreak We have a different theme and response triggers each week. We have upgraded our zoom for longer drawing time and now run sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons like we used to in Rose Lane so our online response has become closer to what our artists had wanted in the real world. The drawings here are quite quick and some are a little clumsy but it has been a long time since I’ve had the chance to draw from the model so the experience is valuable for me. Drawing from the model is like a mindfulness meditation for me and I enjoy the headspace. The normal discursive worries slow right down when focusing on the task at hand. We couldn’t ask for a better model and our numbers are starting to grow with these sessions which include a half hour tea break after the drawing and then a PowerPoint of participant responses with pretty in depth supportive feedback. Almost done with this bad boi, can’t wait to move onto my next one! I used to never finish my sketchbooks. I always used to think my drawings were so bad and that it was so ugly that I just wanted to quickly move onto the next one. This is the first sketchbook I have that I’m really proud of sticking with till the end! (Although I almost gave up ngl) And I’m learning to embrace all of the messiness that sketchbooks are bc that’s part of the process and growth and really tbh that’s just what sketchbooks are for. If there’s anything I got used to in this sketchbook is doing bad drawings and just exploring! Proud of myself for how far I’ve come.
