timeline.

december 10, 1990  --  valentina elena maroun is born.   half-sister to four older brothers,  her biological father misses her birth and is almost entirely absent throughout valentina’s youth.

1990 to 2008  --  valentina spends her formative years in pasadena,  ca with her family.   during this period,  her mother gets back with her previously separated husband  ( valentina’s brothers’ father )  for good.   valentina considers this man to be her real dad,  and at the age of 9 valentina’s surname is changed to his:  alvarez,  matching the rest of their family.   upon her high school graduation at 17 years old,  she prepares to move to silver lake with two of her friends:  they’re both to attend usc,  while valentina attends ucla on a partial athletic scholarship for softball.

2008 to 2010  --  spends her first two years of college doing exactly what most expect:  going out with friends,  experimenting,  drinking whatever she can get her hands on,  and so on and so forth.   she still takes her studies and softball seriously,  and works part-time at paco’s tacos in silver lake during this time.

2010 to 2011  --  falls pregnant at 19 and gives birth to her daughter,  rosa torres,  shortly after turning 20.   has taken the fall and spring semesters of this school year off to prepare for her daughter’s birth,  as well as to be home during rosa’s infancy.   has a strenuous,  lengthy and difficult labor.   it’s under pressure from her parents that valentina pursues a romantic relationship with rosa’s father,  lucas torres,  for rosa’s sake.  by 2012 however,  they come to agree a platonic relationship coparenting works best for everyone involved.

2011 to 2014  --  moves in with her brother in santa monica,  bringing rosa along with her,  to return to school and cut her commute in half.   has lost her athletic scholarship,  yet earns a partial academic one.   valentina relies heavily on family to help out with rosa during this period and has reached out to her biological father for financial aid.   their relationship is strained,  but on the mend.   upon her graduation,  valentina gets a job as a server at maria sol on the santa monica pier.

2015 to 2016  --  though valentina doesn’t want to,  she relents to moving back home so rosa can be closer to her father.   valentina reluctantly moves back in with her parents and enters a job tending bar at dungeon.

2016 to 2018  --  unable to stand living at home,  valentina convinces another one of her brothers to let her move in with him in silver lake.   gets a second job as a yoga instructor at 24/7 fitness.   she cuts back her hours at the club when in 2018,  she manages to land yet another job:  as a project-based writer for buzzfeed reviewing and researching sex toys.   this quickly leads to her brother encouraging  ( read:  telling )  her to move out when he’s put in the uncomfortable position of,  to put it as cleanly as possible,  hearing her working.

2018 to 2021  --  valentina finally moves out into a three bedroom apartment at the oasis with long-time friend,  helena,  for a roommate.   still works part-time at dungeon with hopes to quit soon,  and continues to teach yoga and contribute to buzzfeed.

personality traits.

alluring,  assertive,  vehement  --  valentina is a very passionate person and this translates into her sensuality.   she’s never really been afraid to go after the things she wants,  whether it’s in her personal or professional life.  in personal relationships,  valentina isn’t ashamed to make the first move and can be quite flirty at times.   unfortunately,  valentina has yet to be in a relationship that’s lasted longer than a year or two.   while she does want to settle down,  she can be fickle and unsure of what  ( or who )  she wants.

candid,  effervescent,  resilient  --  in general,  valentina is a person who values honesty and respects people who tell the truth when it’s most difficult.   her keen attitude on brutal honesty doesn’t,  however,  get in the way of her easygoing nature:  it’s not hard to get along with her and she’s incredibly outspoken and outgoing.   of course,  this may rub people the wrong way at times.

egocentric,  erratic,  frivolous  --  it may or may not be obvious that valentina has a penchant for changing her mind.   she does her best to think of others first,  especially so when it comes to her daughter,  but she’s entirely susceptible to her own whims.   she’s impulsive and seems to lack purpose.   and,  ultimately,  it scares her to consider that she’s never known what she wants to do with her life:  so she doesn’t stop to think.

recalcitrant,  resentful,  rigid  --  valentina is a fan of grudges.   she tends to hers like pets.   she’s often stubborn and unwavering and entirely unwilling to admit when she’s in the wrong.   fully the type to never forgive,  never forget,  but just move on.   and perhaps it comes from being the youngest,  but she’s also known for being pouty and upset when things don’t go her way.

miscellaneous headcanons.

for about 2 years beginning when she was 25,  valentina was apart of a roller derby team in los angeles.   given that the pronunciation of her nickname valé sounds so close to valley,  she quickly adopted valley hurl as her derby name.   she eventually quit due to no longer having the time to attend practices.

she still roller skates to this day and,  a year ago,  blew up on tiktok  ( along with her roommate,  the one who initially put her on to skating )  when she posted a video of herself skating and dancing down the street.   she’s since deleted previous videos and curated her entire tiktok feed to focus solely on her roller skating.

her social media totals:  1.8m tiktok followers,  178k instagram followers,  2k twitter followers.   most of these were gained within the past year and she’s certainly not famous by any means,  though she has been able to make money off sponsored ads on her instagram.

she’s very into fitness!   she played soccer growing up and still loves a good game of softball,  she loves running,  taking various fitness classes,  etc.   and on the mention of sports,  she also loves going to dodger games and watching sunday night football.

has considered streaming on twitch but ultimately decided she doesn’t have the time to commit to that sort of endeavor.   also has considered starting a podcast.   sort of a jack of all trades,  master of none.

case in point:  got into upcycling clothes a few years ago.   as a result,  got into sewing and began to go thrifting more frequently.   briefly sold stuff on depop before quitting that endeavor a month or so into it  --  now she mainly upcycles pieces for herself and her friends,  as gifts for people,  etc.

has a few tattoos  ( tbd )  that are easy to cover up and generally only visible when she’s wearing certain clothing.   her mother and grandparents were disappointed when they found out but are okay with them now.

is actually a pretty damn good singer!   her entire family is.   at family parties,  you’ll often catch them getting into karaoke or clearing out room somewhere for a dance floor.   it’s not unusual for them to egg you on to join in.

on that note,  a big part of valentina’s enjoyment comes from this type of fun.   even since having a child she’s never necessarily cut back on going out  --  whether it’s to nightclubs,  dive bars,  karaoke nights,  concerts,  anything  --  and has made some technically irresponsible choices.   still makes them to this day.   she’s not perfect by any means.   she’s learned to be more conscientious over the past decade,  however.

ultimately,  valentina struggles with motherhood:  she does the best she can and although her parents are great people,  she wants to make different choices than them.   there’s a lot to be said about how she dealt with parenthood at first and how she still struggles with it now,  but the short version literally is this:  she’s trying.

is afraid of the dark...   like very.   checks under the bed and in the closet at night to this day.   likely stems from the various pranks her brothers played on her as a kid.

currently does not eat noodles.   after a conversation with her daughter about how noodles look like worms,  valentina agreed to abstain from eating them out of solidarity.   is hoping her daughter will get over this aversion soon because valentina loves noodles.

Mornings before school for Nathan were unpredictable. It was either his mother in a great mood, sober, fixing him his lunch in a paper bag or her passed out on the couch, his father sitting silently across the dining room table having breakfast with him before hurrying him off to school.

And nights were unpredictable. Annissa would sometimes pass out from drugs and Nathan would spend much of the night taking care of her.

Nathan was addicted to cocaine for half of a year, but managed to pull himself out of it. He now only smokes marijuana and drinks alcohol, but those days haunt him.

first off, hugo from europe and new in town and knows exactly one (1) person in LA. but he really likes making friends and meeting new people, so it’s fine

he is german and italian (heavily by way of france) and he is fluent in four languages and speaks english with an english/UK accent 

he has three sisters who are scattered about the world and he loves all of them very much but they are all VERY different - phrase heard very often from him: yeah cool my sister is into that

L O V E S to travel. spent some time after leaving school traveling and couch surfing. it’s how he got into photography. he’s published a coffee table book of photography from that time. nowadays he does whatever freelance work he can to get by - he’s been fortunate enough to be able to get a few magazines regularly purchase his work

he is in LA because he actually agreed to participate in a collection piece for a gallery - he has usually balked at the idea because he pretends to not be pretentious (spoiler alert: he lowkey is pretentious), but it was an exciting project he couldn’t pass up - plus it is stable income for nine months so there’s that

Addison “Ade” Bailey was born in the plains of Africa... not because his family lived there but because his mother gave birth two months early while on safari for her 3rd wedding anniversary.

He actually grew up in the little town of Bournville on the outskirts of Birmingham just around the corner from the Cadbury factory. But sadly his dreams of living his own personal Charlie and the Chocolate Factory story didn’t come true.

His family up and moved to California when he was ten for his father’s job.

He’s been in and around the LA area ever since.

He was a pretty popular kid, always making people laugh and smile, but it took him a long time to adjust to life overseas —- to begin with he hated it and took it out on everyone.

Went into childcare when he left high school, even though his biggest love was photography —- his mother beat him down over that, telling him it was a waste of time.

Within two years he’d made the decision to become a manny and within another two he’d made quite the name for himself. He’d work with rich families in Los Angeles, mostly in Beverly Hills and Malibu.

May have had a affair with one of the moms he was working for, which prompted the move to Silver Lake when he was twenty-five.

Is a little bit useless when it comes to relationships (he gets distracted easily and usually gets lost in work instead), but did manage to stay with one girl shortly after arriving for near on two years, a record for him. He’s not sure if it’ll ever happen again that seriously, but he’s hopeful, he really does want to have a family of his own.

Almost became a dad when they were together, but sadly she had a miscarriage, which was one of the major reasons things didn’t work out in the end and drove them apart.

May have got married in Vegas in 2018, but that’s another one of those things we don’t talk about. After a week she did a runner and he hasn’t heard from her since.

Still loves photography and is working on his portfolio constantly, wanting to hold an exhibition one day to showcase his work.

His sleep schedule is weird as hell. You’ll usually find him roaming around Silver Lake at 4am with a coffee.

Sebastian or Seb, please call him Seb, is a Silver Lake native and grew up causing chaos around Silverwood Terrace. He was always getting into scrapes. Climbing trees, jumping off rocks into the ocean (never checking to see if it was safe first), constantly covered in mud, practically a head to toe bruise.

He spent most of his younger years in the local ER and getting picked up by paramedics after he’d done something stupid. His mom was pretty much convinced he’d end up killing himself.

He had a sense of adventure that he would never grow out of.

In addition to that, he was also extremely clever, making money in high school by agreeing to tutor younger students for cash. He didn’t really need to, his parents are loaded, but it was something to do right?

In senior year he was accepted into Princeton University to study various sciences and moved out to New Jersey shortly after his high school graduation to explore the area.

It took only six months for him to realise that perhaps academics weren’t for him.

At the end of freshman year he dropped out, packed a bag and up and left for Australia with a plan to take a gap year, enjoy twelve months or so of travelling.

Twelve months turned into two years.

Two years quickly turned into five, he had no intention of going back home now.

After his year in Australia, he travelled to South Asia, spent over a year trekking through the Himalayas in Nepal and Tibet. That was when he found himself some company, getting as close as love as he could while on the road. They would talk a lot about the possibility of climbing Mt. Everest together one day, but it wasn’t something that was ever to happen.

They went their separate ways again when he travelled on to Thailand.

After that it was Singapore and following a fleeting stop in Fiji, he finally made his way to New Zealand, the final major destination in his time on the road. A year was spent with Hobbits and Elves before he headed home to the US.

He took six months to road trip from the East coast to the West before eventually arriving back in Silver Lake in September 2020.

Since then he’s been living out of his backpack, a habit he’s unable to break, sleeping on a mattress on the floor of his apartment.

Seb is probably the most chill guy going, he loves on everyone and refuses to argue because he doesn’t have time for it, but he will make his opinions known and can be quite blunt.

-Jem Herondale, the youngest of 9 boys, and by far the most ignored out of the entire family. The Herondale’s were a family of affluence, coming from old money and having a good foundation built in the world. His father the owner of a fortune 500 company and his mom was just a well known socialite, popular for putting her brand on whatever offers came her way.

-The man in the family wanted nothing more than for his sons to take over the company some day, each managing a different branch for him. He was a man’s man, and he wanted every single one of his sons to be carbon copies of himself, Jem was never like that. From a young age he was always the softest, soft spoken, preferring to be indoors instead of roughhousing, this led for the man to be very strict on Jem, forcing him into many sport and things he never truly enjoyed.

-His grandmother had been his only solace, and maybe it was the because she knew he was different. Always nurturing and caring for him, letting him just be a kid and embrace everything that made him different. This bond would grow over the years, Jem seeing his grandmother as the most important person his life, even being the first person he came out to, before the rest of his family.

-What he didn’t know was that she was the only barrier protecting him from the tyrant that was his father, so when the woman passed from natural causes, the man took action against his own youngest son. Being gay wasn’t right in his eyes, and sent Jem to conversion therapy, where he stayed in a facility until he was fixed in his eyes.

-Jem took this chance to internalize everything, having hired a P.I beforehand to gather everything he possibly could that would look incriminating, and could possibly give him leverage over his family. Even going as far as hacking the company from the inside to find insurmountable evidence to strike back, even going so far as to have the facility shut down for good.

-Once he had enough, he pulled the fast one on his dad, making the man beg his son for mercy, which Jem never showed. He held all of the companies assets in the palms of his hands, and entered a legal battle with his family which he ultimately won after months of piling up evidence against them. Now he holds the family fortune all to himself, paid his way into a good college, finished with top marks, and in his grandmother’s will it was also stated that she had left him all f her money to him alone. 

-Although he has a lot of money he doesn’t know what to do with it, opting to give it charity or people in need living a more humble life in the oasis apartments with a roommate. he’s shy and soft spoken, usually day dreaming about the day a guy might look his way and actually find him somewhat interesting. he didn’t keep anything from his past, save the money, except for his last name and the violin his grandmother had gifted him.

They’re an Irish beauty who grew up in Dublin as part of a massive family.

Middle child of six (along with their twin brother).

Born on Christmas Day... full name’s Holly Joy, brother is Joseph, you can see where this is going. Their mom really loves  Christmas!

They wanted the spotlight from a young age, desperate to be heard and seen, they took dancing and singing lessons, even attempted acting at one point and figure skating.

Wanted to attend Juilliard in NYC so spent their teen years working their ass off, cleaning in the ferry port, a paper round, babysitting and dog walking. If they could fit it in, they’d do it.

Sometime during sixth form they came to terms with their gender confusion, coming out as a demigirl and asking everyone around them to use they/them pronouns. They won’t be offended if you use she/her as they’re very much in touch with their feminine side still, but they is their main preference.

It was another couple of years before they discovered that they were also greyromantic, romance just didn’t come easily and they weren’t all too bothered. One night stands and fwbs was the way to go.

At 19 Juilliard came a calling! It was a shock but one they’d been so desperate for, so they packed up and moved to the states... a couple of grand short.

Freshman year went well, they lived in halls and embraced everything the city had to offer. Second year came around and they found themselves with no money, living in an apartment with four other people, infested with roaches and so run down it was a health hazard.

A little over a year later they were forced to move out and drop out of college, moving in with family they had in Silver Lake (including @mateomercer​).

Eventually set up a blog, telling tales of their time in NYC, their discoveries in gender and sexuality. They attempted YouTube as well, but it was a bit of a fail, they never had the patience to actually make the videos.

Their father passed away in September 2019 and they were forced to go home for a couple of months. Brought half of their family back with them when they returned, including their twin brother.

Dog mom to a pack of rowdy dachshunds (Wednesday, Morticia, Sally and Mrs Lovett) and is usually found fighting to control them early in the morning before work.

Hi everyone! So this is my boy Alexander, goes by Xander most of the time if he can get away with it. 

Xander is one of three kids born to Lucy and George Graham, Xander spending most of his life growing up in London. His mother was a retired heiress/socialite and his father came from old money. Xander was honestly never expected to amount to much beyond relying on family money and doing whatever career came easiest, but things didn’t exactly turn out that way. 

He started cooking with their chef when he was small, the woman letting him add in spices and stir occasionally until when by the age of sixteen, he was doing half the cooking with her, testing new recipes and creations.

Decided to go to the Le Cordon Bleu, despite the begging of his parents for a less stressful, more menial career. Became a sous chef for a few years after finishing, working his way up and by 25, was working at using his trust fund to open his own restaurant with friends. 

That was when he got some news. His mostly casual girlfriend of two years had called them off a few months back, until one night he got a call she was in the hospital and asking for him. She’d had a baby, their baby. And she couldn’t do it just yet, couldn’t be a mother. So she asked Xander to either sign over his parental rights or take her. In one of his best and most impulsive choices he has ever admitted to making, he took her. And Elara Jane Graham entered the picture at 6 pounds, 11 ounces of brown curls and blue eyes.

The next four years were a cacophony of learning to raise a child while developing and opening his restaurant. Days filled with a baby strapped to his chest as they looked over menu concepts and tile samples, nights of a teething infant or restless toddler as they went on and on. His best friend moved in with him to help with Elara and keep him sane, and Xander had never been more thankful to the people he’d surrounded himself with. 

Viridian had opened to success, and within a year his business partners were talking expansion, new locations and more more MORE. Los Angeles seemed the perfect spot, so he rented a house out in SIlverlake to start exploring local options and area and just...didn’t leave. Elara was all too happy to move to a place filled with sunshine and nearby beaches. It was when he was in Los Angeles that he got a call from his younger sister, and he was on a red eye to Paris within the hour.

Women had a habit of handing him babies, it seemed. His sister had hidden her pregnancy from not only him but their parents while away for a few years in France, too ashamed to admit to them all they’d been right about the awful man she’d been seeing. But she had her whole life ahead of her, and was willing to be the cool aunt if it meant she wasn’t the mother. In her words he’d already done it once, what was a second time? And so within a span of twenty four hours, he became a father once again, signing the papers to adopt Juliette Graham as his own. 

That was a little over a year ago, and while he still spends certain days in phone meetings and location scouting for the extension location, he’s taken a step back of sorts.

Being a dad of two is very different from a dad of one, so he’s taken the time to adjust their little family and devote a lot more time and energy into being there for the girls. Six months ago while deciding none of the processed baby food in the shops were anything Juliette would actually eat, he stumbled into making his own baby food blends and when they were a hit among his few mommy friends, began to sell them each week at the local farmers market at their suggestion. It’s become a thing, a steady flow of side income and enough to keep him pleasantly busy. 

So here he is, single dad two two girls, Elara now six and Juliette now one. In a (slow) process of opening a new location and making baby food by night. But he’s grown to love his life here, doesn’t quite miss London and it’s constant pace just yet.

THE GOOD:

Friendly as hell, though it could easily be mistaken for flirting.  (It isn’t.)

Believes in honest work and so provides it, both in marriage and business endeavors.  To his credit Derek is actually a very thorough tech installer and has built a couple custom rooms (including a gamer’s haven) inside their mansion himself.  He might be of use to some of the local bars and businesses.

Doesn’t subscribe to machismo/manly man bs and has the army of loud shirts to prove it.  Thrift store camo print anything is a close second- the tackier the better.

Genuinely loves his swamp rat wife.  Gotta dig them dangerous women!

THE BAD:

Prone to jealousy, as there is some small insecurity concerning the age difference between himself and Echo.  It’s made worse when she doesn’t wear her ring despite he himself being the one with the reputation for ‘losing’ his.

Unreliable, whether intentional or not, because of work or not. He spends a lot of time away and doesn’t always answer his phone, doesn’t always say when he’s coming back, and often forgets to return read texts.

Used to coming and going as he pleases and living on Planet Derek means he can be impulsive.  Like ‘getting arrested the week before your wedding’ impulsive.  It’s better now...but they have a Big Effin’ House and a lot of money.

THE UGLY:

Derek loves the Galaeus-Petras mansion.  A lot.  So much so it even has a nickname.  It’s a drastic difference from living in a work van, which is what he was (by choice) doing up until meeting Echo and even during early dating.  If he had to go back to that he would...but there’s something to be said about having your own movie theatre.  The sneaking suspicion that his wife might hate their house makes it hard to enjoy that, though.

This is all trial and error, with a healthy dose of guess work.  Derek never expected or planned to be married.  A lot of people would likely argue that he shouldn’t have done it.  They might be right, they might not.  He tries but almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. With a tendency to not look all that far into the future and the constant stress of his work traveling, there’s only so many times an impromptu trip to the aquarium will set things right and Derek as of current doesn’t have a Plan B for life in place.

Derek was a sniper in the army but doesn’t talk about it, in all likelihood for good reason.  If there’s any mental or physical baggage from time serving he’s bottling it if he’s even aware of it, and has been since he got out.  It hasn’t stopped him from getting really into Nerf Gun wars though.  Ghillie suit and all.

THE OOC:

Derek has a lot of freedom and is capable of a lot of handyman/tech install work.  Aside from being about as enthusiastic as a golden retriever he’s also very committed to having fun and now owns a party mansion so that leaves him open to (I feel) a wide variety of plots.  Let’s throw characters at each other, he won’t bite!  His wife might tho.

I’ve examined the possibility of him cheating on Echo as if I were defusing a bomb and cannot imagine a scenario where he would, so that idea/plot is a rare hard no.  Most anything else, let’s chat.

family was the classic rich perfectionist family, mother had spent her days at the Cape Fear Country Club, gossiping with the rest of the wives of entrepreneurs/politicians/finance/etc & his father had smoked fat cigars with the likes of the other affluent people of Silver Lake ranging from philanthropists to stockbrokers. known for their huge family dinners on Fridays and the fact that they had never missed a single mass (family was super catholic). 

life was about keeping the Rothschild name clean. scandal was practically unheard of with how hard they worked to keep their reputation pure. 

public did not know his mother had been popping Xanax daily and his father had been committing fraud and embezzlement since the very beginning of his career.

anthony fulfilled his parent’s wishes of having the ideal family-friendly son. popular in school for being a total heartthrob but charismatic and charming to the point of questioning if it was possible that he was even a real person. In typical golden boy style (... that nate archibald energy wld be the closest to understanding it ig?), he crushed it as the midfielder and leader of his high school’s soccer team. as he entered his teenage years, he found himself yearning for something more, this endless itching to wreck havoc and chaos, to break free from the Rothschild reputation.

this is the big moment in the films where the main character starts changing so hang on to your seats!! the knee injury. the force that pushed him over the edge. what made him give it all up. it was his greatest affliction and ruined his up and coming athletic career in the senior year. his knee never recovered fully to its originaly form + he wasn’t allowed to play the sport seriously anymore. 

he gained a devil-may-care outlook on life, notoriety to what was once a wholesome boy-next-door reputation. he lived his life w/an empiricist mindset. opened his ignorant clouded eyes to the truth, his family was completely artificial. he began stealing and reselling cars as well as selling to sad addicted housewives like his own mother who needed their fix b/c he felt hollow. not yet at the nihilism point bt close enough.

eighteen hits + he is gone without a trace: disappearing as if he hadn’t existed in the small town at all. “Why did he leave?” “What is he doing?” “He’s actually here and his father just locked him up like Boo Radley” “I heard the Rothschild boy joined an illegal underground fight club.” Malicious rumors spread. 

none of these rumors had it right. anthony spent most of his 20s traveling the world with one backpack, letting the world be his school. Being cut off, he managed to use some of the money saved from car stealing in the beginning but then kept various jobs (Mostly legal) in the locations that he stayed in temporarily to keep himself afloat. he became a true car enthusiast + realized what he wanted rather than what others wanted.

with a new desire to reinvent himself, he had turned his journals into a novel on his experiences and ended up making some buzz in the literature world. his luck died as quickly as it began, leaving him forgotten in the literature world. Noted as a one-hit wonder, he settled on investing into the stock market to keep himself afloat. despite being told he couldn’t, he made his own fortune and has been living off of his well played investments.

If not for the merciless divorce of his parents (His father had left his mother for a too-young assistant but she ended up taking him for everything that he had), Silver Lake may have just been a chapter in his life to get to the end of the book, a place that he remembers only as a distant memory from ages 0 to 17. ant has come back to start a wine business and finally settling down somewhere, at least for a little while.
