a couple weeks ago i traded a 4 track vinyl set for this 7" cause it has eyehategod on it lol

apparently it's pretty rare? i thought it was cool, so here it is

Epic Down is a duo from Leipzig, Germany dedicated to the sluggish grooves and lumbering riffs of sludge & doom. Founded in the pandemic turmoil of the year 2021, by Mitzschi (guitar(s)/bass) and Fabian (drums/vocals) to musically express the deeply felt horror about the excesses of the established abysses of a consumerist civilization with pronounced destructive traits and a reality marked by war, disease and destruction, and to preserve it as a defining sound of this so-called turn of the times.

Influenced by primal doom and stoner, the sound of EpicDown is mainly characterized by solid downtempo grooves and rolling walls of guitars, complemented by slightly melancholic vocals.

Thursday, June 5: Archie Bunker, "Make Nice"

The distinction between sludge and doom metal mostly lay in the margins, but what definitely separated the likes of Crowbar from St. Vitus was a certain irascibility, and the immediately apparent snark in a title like “Make Nice” proved the perfectly named Archie Bunker was cut from a similarly ornery cloth.  The tune moved with a distinctly sludgy doom charge, but Ben Smith’s hollering was far more annoyed than despondent.  There was something specific about “Make Nice” and Archie Bunker’s approach, and something specifically American (and Southern), that gave the song a certain lifeforce, though it was also tethered to its time and place very much felt like it came after grunge and alternative burst wide open as opposed to sounding timeless.

jackson's second album of the week! i chose to link the opening track as it is a great harbinger for the rest of the album.

this album is a pillar in all of metal history. an absolute game changer. electric wizard released come my fanatics and said, "we need to go darker. we need to be heavier than anyone has ever been before." and that they did. they released dopethrone, which, in the first riff on the first song, already sounds like lifting the weight of the world. listening to this album makes you feel slow, bulky, drugged, and doomed in a completely fucked world.

this album has several moments teetering the line between heavy doom and almost noise/drone. altar of melektaus, the 4th movement of weird tales, is straight drone. the only way to describe the void resonance of it is to say it sounds as if your soul has been ripped from your body and sent to a realm of pure chaos. a complete void, yet somehow claustrophobic. paradoxically peaceful in it's overwhelming tone.

the title track of the album, dopethrone, is easily one of the heaviest songs ever created. the riff sounds dreary and antagonistic. hopelessly wicked. the laugh at the beginning, before the riff even hits, is a foreshadow of what's to come. the vocals seem desperate, as whiny and distorted as possible. you can barely hear what he's saying, a dense audible fog between his vocals and the listener's ears.

i cannot recommend this album enough. it is a goliath of doom. if music could take a physical form, this album would be satan. a reminder of our hopeless, meaningless, void existence in a macabre, yet beautifully put together way.
