What SMIYCMP does well

Sneak Me In Your Closet, My Prince, like most vertical dramas, is a very silly little series, with a clichéd plot and some cringey dialogue. However, there are a few things I thought it did well.

Ramiro Leal and Ben Ubiñas, who play the two leads, do some great acting. They make it believable that their two characters, Sebestian and Gabriel, are falling in love. Unlike in many other vertical dramas, they aren’t just phoning it in. It’s clear that they care about making a good movie, and they appear to be having a lot of fun.

The story takes the time to build a believable relationship. The best scenes are when Seb and Gabe are just enjoying spending time together, and there are lots of small moments of affection. Also, although the way in which they get together is very contrived, they would probably still fall for each other under more normal circumstances. They have common interests, like cooking and basketball, and they can relate to each other in how they both come from difficult families, and in how they both lost their mothers when young.

Although Gabe starts off believing he is straight, the story takes the time to show us that he definitely is not, and that makes his character more realistic. As a child, he imagined a prince coming to rescue him if he were in danger. As an adult, he refuses to sleep with his girlfriend/fiancée of a year, he’s not heartbroken when that relationship ends, and he is incredibly awkward when he attempts to flirt with a different woman. One their own, I don’t think any of these factors would be that significant; but in combination, they begin to paint a picture. Oh, and he is also obviously very attracted to Seb from the beginning.

Episode 13:

Stiles woke up to the smell of baking coming from the kitchen. He scratched at his bare stomach as he followed the intoxicating scents. “What smells so good?” He smiled as he watched Derek moving around the kitchen.

“Oh, good morning.” Derek blushed, taking a pan out of the oven. “I thought I’d make you a traditional Greek breakfast. There is Greek yogurt, nuts, strawberries and koulouri.” He plated a pastry from the pan and handed it to Stiles. “Eat while I get Eli ready for school.”

Stiles chuckled, looking at the spread in front of him. Most days he just went to the deli down the street and grabbed a few pastries. “Thank you.” He took a bite of the koulouri and moaned. “This is so good…”

Derek chuckled, blushing deeply. “Thank you. I’m glad you like it. Eli walked in and he sat the boy at the table with some fruit. “I’m thinking of adding it to the menu at the restaurant.”

“You should. Do you ever cook there? Or do you just let Isaac do all the cooking?” Stiles sighed, grabbing a cup of yogurt. “I could get used to this.” Cora walked into the kitchen and poured herself a cup of coffee. “Get used to what?”

“I’m guessing food in the house.” Derek chuckled. “No, I don’t cook as much as I want anymore. I have way too many responsibilities.” He shut off the oven and handed Stiles a cup of coffee. “I’m going to go in tomorrow and try to create a plan from Isaac’s end to increase revenue.”

Stiles nodded, licking his spoon. “So you don’t have any plans today?”

“Not really. I have a meeting with Eli’s teacher tomorrow for a meet the parents night.” He shrugged, ruffling the kid’s hair.

Eli grumbled and slapped his hand away causing everyone to laugh. Stiles nodded, finishing his food. “Maybe Cora can watch Eli tonight? I’d like to take you somewhere special.”

Derek blushed and nodded. “Do you mind, Cora?”

Cora giggled, shaking her head. “Or course not. Eli and I can build a blanket fort and watch the pirate movie.”

Eli cheered. “I love the pirate movie.” He bounced in his chair. “Can we start now? I don’t wanna go to school.”

Derek hummed and nodded. “You’ve earned a personal day. Just please don’t leave the house.”

Cora nodded, picking a strawberry from Eli’s hair. “Yeah, I’m not sure we can trust Peter. I have plenty of Disney movies on my laptop and the sheriff says there is a projector somewhere.” She grinned, looking up at her brother. “Have a wonderful date with your husband.”

Derek shook his head as heat traveled up his neck. “You are looking for a fight.” He smirked.

“Well, just don’t make a mess in the kitchen.” Stiles laughed. “Let me set up the projector and you go get dressed. I really want to show you something.” He chewed his lip for a moment before he kissed Derek’s cheek and walked out of the kitchen.

Derek sighed as he watched him walk away. He was not really sure when he had started actually having feelings for the other man, but he could not deny he was falling hard. “Umm, yeah.” He shook his head and stared at his sister. “Sure you’re okay watching Eli, today? You don’t have anything important in class?”

She shook her head eating a piece of toast. “We’re just reviewing for end of the year exams. I’m serious, Derek. Go!”

He nodded and went up to his room to change for the day.

Derek laughed as they walked into a members only restaurant. “This place is impossible to get into, I know. I’ve tried.”

Stiles grinned. “I know the chef here. She could give Isaac a run for his money.” He grinned, attempting to lead him into the lobby, but they were stopped by a tall blond man.

“I don’t know who you think you are.” The man sneered at them. “But this is a members only five star restaurant.” He growled, placing his hand on Stiles’s shoulder to hold him back.

Stiles, frowned, gazing at the hand on his shoulder. “And who do you think you are, placing your hands on me? I was invited. Tell me, did the chef happen to say she was expecting a friend?”

The host laughed and nodded. “Yes, but that friend is Stiles Stilinski. I doubt that is you. You look like a high school kid trying to play adult.”

Derek growled at the insolent host. “This is Stiles Stilinski, the former sheriff’s son.”

He raised his brow at the two men. “Stiles Stilinski, heir to the Beacon Hills mafia?”

Derek shook his head. “No, they just share the same name.”

Stiles sighed, rolling his eyes. Go get the chef, and she will confirm my identity.” He turned, hearing someone clear his throat behind them.

“Well, well.” Peter smirked. “Fancy seeing you two here.” He had his arm wrapped around Kate’s waist and smirked, bending over to whisper in Stiles’s ear. “You know, I’m a long time member. I can get you in… if you let me in you.”

“Get away from me, perv.” Stiles growled, pushing the older werewolf away from him.

Derek sighed, not wanting to be in his uncle’s presence. “Let’s just go.”

The host chuckled. “Yeah, I’m sure the gay bar a few streets down will be more your station.” He patted Stiles’s cheek.

Stiles growled and punched the man in the nose, hearing a satisfying pop. His eyes grew wide and he turned to Derek. “I am so sorry.”

Kate sneered at everyone. “Can we just go in?I don’t want to get blood on this Vera Wang dress.”

Peter smirked and nodded. “Come my love.” He winked and led her into the lobby.

The host glared at stiles, holding his nose. “Security? Come get these idiots out of here!”

Stiles reached under his jacket, gripping his gun as a few men started toward them.

“That is enough!” Derek turned and saw a tall vivacious woman in stilettos and a blood red corset. “What do you think you are doing?”

The host wiped blood from his nose. “I’m sorry Erica. I will have this trash thrown out of here in just a moment.”

She walked over and slapped him. “Matt, you are fired. Do you know who this is? I am alive because of this man right here.Security, make sure Matt gets his final check and is out of here in five minutes.” She turned toward stiles and grinned.” Hello, Batman.”

Stiles Smirked. “Catwoman. Drop dead gorgeous as always.” He kissed her cheeks. “How are you and Boyd?”

Erica giggled, giving him a hug. “Good. I have missed you. We need to have you over. We have been saving up for a house since you helped with my treatment and paid my medical bills last year.”

Stiles nodded. “Let me know if you need further assistance. You and Boyd are family.”

She grinned. “Thanks boss.” She turned toward Derek grinning. “And who is this?”

Stiles chuckled. “Sorry, this is Derek, my husband.”

Derek smiled at her. “It’s a pleasure.” He was a little shell shocked over what just happened. “Stiles? What do you really do for a living? You can’t just be a mechanic. You paid off her medical bills.”

Stiles blushed and shrugged. “I’ve saved my money well, and enjoy helping my friends.” He chewed his lip. “Erica, I was hoping we could borrow your kitchen.”

Erica smirked. “You’ve caught yourself a real hunk, Batman.” She shook her head. “Yeah, moja kuchnia jest twoją kuchnią.” She patted his cheek. “We’re closed tonight anyway.”

“Thank you.” Stiles grinned as he gripped Derek’s hand and dragged him toward the kitchen.

Anybody else notice that Gabe was showering in his briefs at the beginning of SMIYCMP when Seb goes into his hotel room? This little oversight cracks me up every time that I watch, cause like... couldn't they have adjusted the camera angle? Who typically showers in their undies??

Some thoughts on the final scene of SMIYCMP

I want to talk about the last scene in SMIYCMP, because I think there’s possibly a fair bit that we’re told about how the kidnapping and sexual assault have affected Seb and his relationship with Gabe. It’s just mostly communicated visually rather than verbally.

Most obviously, Seb is wearing a bandage around his knee, which indicates that he has been injured. It’s probably not a major injury, for he is still able to walk. So it is an injury that will likely eventually heal.

In film, physical wounds often symbolize the psychological effects of trauma. Thus the bandaged knee tells us that Seb is indeed dealing with some trauma after being kidnapped and sexually assaulted. The fact that he can nevertheless still walk around means that he is mostly coping with the trauma, and that he’ll eventually be ok.

Seb also starts off wearing a shirt. We can extrapolate from previous scenes that Seb generally dislikes wearing shirts, or at least that he’s usually very comfortable with not wearing one. He never wears a shirt when he’s at home, and he takes his shirt off when he’s working in the garage. So I think it’s significant that he’s wearing a shirt in this last scene. It suggests that he’s feeling rather vulnerable.

Seb is wearing his glasses, too. He presumably wears contacts most of the time, and he presumably takes his contacts out before he goes to bed, but we’ve never seen him wearing his glasses at bedtime before. That he’s wearing his glasses now might therefore indicate that he’s feeling more anxious about not being able to see properly. He’s being extra vigilant.

The glasses might also sort of feel like protective armor for Seb. The only other time he wears his glasses is when he goes with Gabe to the board meeting, where he knows that he’ll be confronting a group of hostile strangers in a setting that’s probably a little out of his comfort zone.

The fact that Seb allows Gabe to remove his glasses and shirt shows us that he still feels completely safe with Gabe, despite everything he’s been through. He trusts that Gabe will take care of him and protect him.

It’s also important that Seb is wearing his mother’s necklace and Gabe’s mother’s ring in this scene (especially since the camera zooms in on the jewelry). We’ve never seen Seb wearing the necklace before, so it’s significant that he’s wearing it now. Since he’s still wearing it when he’s about to go to bed, it’s possible that he hasn’t taken it off since Gabe put it on him.

I think the necklace has come to symbolize Gabe’s protection. Twice now, Gabe has handed Seb the necklace after saving him. And the second time, it was the dropped necklace that made Gabe realize that Seb was in danger in the first place. The ring, of course, symbolizes Gabe’s love for Seb. Nestled together above Seb’s heart, the necklace and ring show us how much Seb trusts Gabe to love and protect him.

In the aftermath of the kidnapping and sexual assault, Gabe has also changed his behavior. Compare this bedroom scene with the previous one. In the previous scene, Gabe playfully grabs Seb, shoves him onto the bed, and straddles him. In this last scene, Gabe is a lot more tentative in the beginning. His expression is apprehensive. He waits for Seb to initiate things, and he lets Seb set the pace. It’s Seb who pulls Gabe down and holds him close. But Gabe is still careful to keep most of his weight off Seb so that he isn’t pinning him down.

Gabe also makes sure to get Seb’s explicit consent this time. Gabe says, “Let me know if you wanna stop,” and he doesn’t fully relax, or smile, until Seb says, “Don’t stop.”

So, yeah, I think there’s a lot happening here. 😅

Note: thegreatestomens pointed out that Seb is also wearing the knee bandage in the previous bedroom scene, so it’s likely that Ramiro Leal had a real-life injury. But I don’t think this affects my interpretation too much, thankfully. In the first scene, the bandage is almost always outside the frame or covered by the captions. In the final scene, Seb is very obviously wearing the bandage. So I’m guessing that they just incorporated Ramiro’s injury into the story.
