Okay, I finally got to watch today's video, so here's the not-quite-live commentary/chaotic highlights post I promised about it :)

Not entirely video related, but I love that as usual, I see a bunch of people in the comments saying "Woah I never knew AJ stood for Alexander Jeremy" while I'm here like. I don't think I've ever heard any of them refer to Tom as Thomas before this intro. Do they normally introduce him that way and I just never noticed or-?

ive been reading a lot about transmascs/trans men throughout history (alexander durov, one eyed charley, albert cashier etc) and many of them from what ive seen were able to get pretty far without having their sex discovered and im just wondering how? i know you don't really need much to pass even in 'modern days' and that you don't need to medically transition to pass (i passed a lot before T in front of strangers)

does it really only come down to just not telling and the men around them not caring for their voice?

its a bit harder to research since so much of history involving transmascs are either scrubbed or they're deadnamed and misgendered once they're gone

idk maybe im just lowkey jealous because many of them rarely got questioned from what ive seen and they were generally respected while they were alive

you know, that's a good question

if i had to guess, i think part of the reason people are so focused on gender right now is because we have recorded media to refer back to. instead of referring to people in our real lives we know, people tend to refer to the highly scripted people they see on the television, tablet, etc. we are fixated on what women "should look, act and sound like" and the same for men because we have multiple industries pushing this narrative. the internet is probably also likely a huge problem.

instead of people pointing to someone they know in their life and going "oh yeah i knew a guy like that before, he just had a high pitched voice!" (<- is actually talking about a trans man who isn't publicly out) they refer to the sculpted, scripted, preened and airbrushed people they see in shows, movies, games and popular content on YouTube. i think we're becoming way less accepting of the diversity humanity offers by being continuously lambasted with what "conventional attractiveness" and gender roles should look like.

it may also have to do with the fact that trans rights and trans people only really became known to the general public within the last 100 years. cishet people really just did not know about or consider the idea of a trans person anywhere near as much as they do now. i have a feeling its a lot of backlash from the civil rights movements of the past and present. i think people may have just minded their business before they became painfully aware of the existence of trans people.

those are my guesses, anyway. i'd love to hear more from other people on this!

And because of the squip controlling jeremy, jeremy would be at fault for (yk)ing Chloe while she was drunk, therefore cheating on Brooke.

and so yesterday i finished the musical. i am still thinking about this song, and i go to the song on yt to see what others think about it.

a little bit of this info may be wrong, because i read the book a month or so ago. correct me if i AM wrong.

At some point when Jeremy was first in the party, chloe of course found him since they had agreed to meet up at the party in the book. (also, brooke and jeremy were never dating book wise) chloe gave him a mystery drug, and just told him to take it. CHLOE. LOOK AT ME. WHY. he takes it, and of course the squip is turned off now.

SO CHLOE HAS GIVEN HIM THIS STRONG DRUG, TAKES ONE HERSELF, AND TAKES HIM DOWN INTO THE BASEMENT.

you can see the problems with this.

in the book, this is chloes fault. she took advantage of jeremy for her own pleasure.

i dont think jeremy had consented to this in the book. (again i might be wrong)

and of course, Jake catches this in the act

we continue the book without uncovering this again, as they did in the musical

oh i love him i love how he’s genuinely just a completely average guy - earth heroes “average guys” tend to always be super geniuses ie. peter parker. but rich is genuinely just a completely average normal dude. he flipped burgers when he wasn’t nova-ing! he barely scraped through high school (again, cause of the nova thing!). he was just a genuinely normal teenager with a complex cause of his super smart little brother. becoming nova was both the best and worst thing to ever happen to him.

Thank god he never made it into the MCU. Since 2006 has been going from strength to strength in the comics (a part from the few years when he was dead!). Since he came back in 2016/17 I don’t think anything he has been in has been bad. He either has the magic touch or he’s insanely lucky for dodging MCU synergy and having writers who clearly love him!!

List of ships I’m still mad at (either for not happening or because of what happened to them) and why:

-Bellarke (The 100): listen. they had so much chemistry. the actors literally got married. for various reasons I did not like lexa that much. was I still mad that they killed her? Yes I was. And I think if we had more time with her I would have liked her more (and don’t get me wrong - I did like her!). But the storyline just rubbed me the wrong way a little bit.

-Rizzles (Rizzoli and Isles): again, chemistry. They were flirty and loved each other so much, that it could have easily have been transitioned to lovers. But I always got the vibe that angie harmon would have been unwilling to portray a woman in love with another woman and possibly had to kiss her (I’m not saying she’s homophobic, idk enough about her to say that, but that’s just the vibe I got). I think sasha alexander would have been more willing, but I could be wrong about that too, idk. Still, they were like the blueprint for queerbaiting for women, which doesn’t happen on tv that often. It was usually reserved for men, probably because people don’t see stories for women as compelling due to misogyny. And you know what, I was happy to be queerbaited because I know in my heart they ended up realizing they were in love after the show ended (I didn’t finish watching it but I know what happened and I am have no problem making my own shit up)

-Huddy (House M.D): don’t even talk to me about what they did to my girl cuddy. Shit gets me heated. I know lisa edelstein wanted off the show for contract reasons (at least I’m pretty sure) and I support her. However. They could have written her off the show ANY OTHER WAY THAN THE WAY THEY DID. It was a disservice to both House’s character and hers. No matter how he treated her, I truly believe house respected her, both as a person and as a doctor. And crashing his car through her home shit all over that. And I wouldn’t have minded if the relationship ended with both of them being bitter about it, because they both deserved to be. But I think it would have been more compelling if they ended their relationship resentful of each other, but also KNOWING their friendship (which they had for YEARS) means they could never actually hate each other, but also knowing they would never be able to able to repair it and have what they had before. sort of like gale and katniss in the hunger games.

That’s all I can think of for now, but there’s probably others.

I try to but I'm terrible about it which is a personal failing. I am so sorry. a new strategy that helps with this is that with my WIPs I try to respond right after the next chapter is posted so the person gets a nice lil notif and they have something else to read!

no I actually usually dislike crossovers lol. like theogony is a fusion of the outlander premise but I can assure you that James Alexander Malcom MacKenzie Frasier will not make an appearance. crossovers stress me out and I like to keep my little fictional words separate, if I can. ok edit: on further review I've concluded that I enjoy premise swaps (these are just AUs lol), but I can't deal with characters from multiple pieces of media interacting. it's too much. stay in your lanes, my god. this isn't super smash bros.

not a whole fic but someone basically copy and pasted a bunch of lines from NAR into their story and then a bunch of drama ensued. it sucked and I don't like looking at NAR because it reminds me of it. I still think about the anon who told me about it, though. they were so lovely and so caring and kind to me. I hope they're doing well.

I'm just listening to your new episode and i really don't understand the charter stuff. I remember reading a bit about it here and there a few monts ago, but i didn't really pay attention. What is the point of all this? I understand that the teams pay the series to compete so it's a money thing? How much did they have to pay before/how much do they have to pay now?

Now that the series is finally growing, why would you immediately slam the doors to international teams that have the chance of bringing in a new audience?

Also when you were talking about the masses of women under 25 becoming rossi fans and the alexander rossi brainrot pandemic i was like wow, this is literally about me. Love that this experience is so universal haha

First of all, thanks for listening! I really appreciate it. Glad to know i’m helping people recognize the signs and symptoms of alexander rossi brain disease. As for the charter stuff, I don’t totally understand it myself yet. I’m going to do a full episode about it but is still have A LOT of research to do beforehand. But since you asked i will try to explain it based on what i understand about it as of right now.

1. Yes, it’s a money thing. Idk if teams pay the series to compete right now with like an entrance fee or not. I could be wrong but i’ve always understood it as “if you can meet the cost/logistical hurdles of competing in the series, come on down.” what i mean by that is: getting engine leases (each manufacturer limits how many engines they allocate to the series each year so can be hard to get), getting a chassis (can be hard and expensive to get), getting sponsors/funding (approx $5m per car for a full season iirc), & worst of all finding people to work for you. So, from what i understand no real entrance fee just because it’s really expensive for teams to join anyway. Because it’s so expensive to join/run teams, indycar has the leader’s circle where they pool the prize money from every race (idk how this works) & pay the top 22 cars in the championship a little over a million dollars after each season to give them a start with funding for next season. When the charters come in, only chartered teams can collect leaders circle payments. So it’s basically a reward for having a charter and competing full time. im assuming it takes the pressure off full-time teams because they won’t be competing for their cars existence next season because in the past finishing outside the leaders circle could mean you can’t afford to run your car the next season (like andretti last year). But the real point of the charter is equity for owners. By that I mean, if they ever wanted to leave the series they could sell their spot to another team for a ton of money. Right now, if a team leaves a series, they basically disappear off the face of the earth. Their stuff gets auctioned off but other than that they get nothing in return for the millions they’ve invested in the team. The charter is essentially a property interest. They’re limited in quantity, give certain benefits like automatic entries & are linked to the leader’s circle so they accumulate value over time so if a team owner decides they want out, they didn’t waste their investment & they’ll get paid back for it by selling their charter. (it’s all very finance bro type stuff. think of a charter as stock. you want to buy low and sell high. it makes indycar teams more attractive to outside investors because they see having a charter as a way to make money.)

2. i don’t think the ultimate goal was to slam the door on international teams because like you said, they want this new international audience. if prema doesn’t get charters, it’s because of circumstance imo. unfortunately, they are joining the series the year they’re implementing charters. if they’d joined earlier, they wouldn’t have a problem. if they joined in a few years and paid a team for charters, it wouldn’t be a problem. indycar also fears having too many full time cars in the series for pit lane/paddock capacity in some places. hence why they need some sort of cap. i think they want international teams like prema in, i just think they had to draw the line somewhere. also like idk how current teamowners would feel about giving prema charters when they haven’t even competed in a race yet. i’m not saying it’s impossible for indycar to decide to give them charters anyway though because, personally, i’d like to see it. i think it’s just a question of how bitter are the team owners/other reasons to keep them out vs. how much do they see the value in giving prema charters now.

i hope that somewhat answers your questions but i definitely rambled so keep an eye out for the episode about charters where i will hopefully be able to explain it more coherently!

The dining room is starting to clear out, but it’s one of those days where Aaron isn’t nearly bouncing out of his seat while eating, so Ben’s stayed with him.  How could he not.

Aaron flicks Ben’s cheek with a finger.  It’s a sharp feeling.  “Whatcha thinking, Benjamin?”

“I was thinking that you’ve been so calm today, but I think I’m changing my mind.”  He rubs his cheek and makes a face at Aaron.  

“Georgina’s always threatening to slip some pills into my breakfast,” Aaron says.  “Maybe today she did.  I’ll check when I get home.”  He stands up.  “Need to take a piss, wanna come?”

Ben gives him a Look, but the seriousness of it is broken by the kind of big smile that Aaron always makes happen.  “No.”

“Boring.  Okay, I’ll meet you back here.”

But as soon as Aaron walks away, Declan appears, sitting right down in Aaron’s chair.  Ben thinks: all the other chairs are empty too.

“Hey,” Ben says.  Declan’s fine, but these moments alone with Aaron at training are starting to feel like a rare thing he needs to collect, like a special-edition product he needs to stock up on before it sells out.  “What’s up?”

Declan looks serious.  “I was talking with B, and it made me think.  I wish you’d be joining us on international break.”

And even dressing “for” other people is still self serving because we get the compliments and attention that feel good from the person we want it from lol. Then there’s also dressing for the time and place or audience, like you’re probably going to dress more modestly for your partner’s work dinner at the same fancy place you wore something sexier to when it was just the 2 of you for date night lol.

And sort of the same reason but VERY DIFFERENT desired outcomes, so I had this dress that I tie dyed and it was honestly pretty tacky because it was one of my first times trying it, but it was super comfy so I wore it at home a lot. Anyway my niece was little and OBSESSED with it and we made some for her that she wore all the time. I looked like a cartoon character, she looked like a cute kid lol. So when I picked her up from school, she asked me to wear the dress so she could show her friends - the 6 year olds LOVED IT! So I always wore it to pick her up (only a few times a year) but then when she was 8 and at mine and she was all sad because she wanted to ask me to wear something “more normal” because one kid said it was an ugly dress lol. And most of the other women there were either in office wear or sweats, so ya I stood out. But then I let her pick my clothes out and she thought I still looked cooler than the other women which made her proud (I’m not in competition with them btw and neither is she, she just likes that her friends think I’m so cool - which made me feel great!). But it’s another example of dressing for other people, which like you said I already owned the clothes so I liked what she picked (jeans and a colourful shirt, with my sparkly sneakers) which was also pretty normal for what I’d wear, just not sequined shoes for school pickup lol

but it’s like… yeah clothing can be a problem in coercive control type relationships, and that’s a whole other issue and not relevant here, but it’s so very normal and acceptable to dress differently for many occasions AND speak differently - like no swearing, talk about totally different things with different people. Idk I just can’t imagine being the same in every setting of my life and being the same as I was 5 or 10 years ago and if I were, or Taylor to continue the example, people would say it’s another form of arrested development, so… fuck em and do you 💃🏼

Also lol at spending less on designer shoes because of your bfs influence. I’m curious now what your favourite shoes look like? My heels are very basic and have a chunky heel because I can’t walk in stilettos lol

re my shoes, I still buy things I like but 1) I have really a lot of shoes 2) he doesn’t like very kind of trendy/haute coutureish things. I have a few pairs of Alexander McQueen shoes which are tbh investment pieces to a degree but I tend to wear investment pieces too because I don’t like to never wear clothes I own (I actually sold a pair of Laboutins I had because I realized I can’t wear them without fucking up the soles and I didn’t want to fuck up the soles more) and Alexander McQueen is just too alternative for his taste. He finds them weird looking. I still like those shoes but as I say, I’m not gonna wear shoes he hates if we’re going out us two or even like to a group thing but we’re really dressing up. He likes very classic heels - like the more plain the better for him, he prefers plain stilettos or pumps I have - which are mostly Aldo and such? - to even like my Jimmy Choos (which are red and have a square heel but not that out there) or any of my Casadeis (which I think never makes very alternative things or at least I can’t remember a wacky collection from them). I know he won’t appreciate any really exciting shoes I’ll buy, so I don’t lol and it saves me money and if I *need* shoes then I buy like regular retailer stuff or kinda budget luxury brands (like Michael Kors) and no longer any legitimate designer pieces. Because yes I really care about his opinion and buying stuff he hates is obviously not really worth it because I won’t want to wear it as much. I also like cool sunglasses and again he really likes sorta plain ones in a very particular shape on me so I wear those more and haven’t bought more whereas I used to buy more to match new bags and particular outfits. Anyway like… I don’t think any of that’s a bad thing. He’s not saying to me that I can’t wear what I want but *I* would rather he really likes how I look than focus on whether I think it looks that cool also because I don’t own ANYTHING I don’t think looks cool? So as you say, it’s just mixing and matching existing things.

also the point about acting differently is so true and again that doesn’t mean we’re being inauthentic. I’m not gonna swear much around my in laws and I’m not gonna swear much around work people (there have been exceptions on this where the work culture has been more alternative) or people I don’t know well but with friends I swear a fair amount. When I was drinking and open to recreational drugs, I wouldn’t have done them in the above settings either lol or drunk heavily. I’m not gonna get fucked up wasted at lunch with my MIL because it’s…. inappropriate to the context.

I also even go a step further and I talk about different aspects of my job/s depending on who I’m with. If I’m with teaching friends, I do talk about that mostly but if I’m with people I want to impress, I talk more about the writing and like stress my background in academia so they don’t think I’m “just” a teacher lol (nothing wrong with that but I’m actually genuinely NOT and unless you’re very excited about teaching then it’s not that impressive to people and I’m not excited/passionate about it at all). I talk about different pop culture things even with different people because I know a huge range of things about pop culture and I can adapt easily depending on if the person is basic or artsy and if they’re interested in celebs or just art or whatever. Some people I don’t smoke in front of ever. Etc. There are a lot of tweaks I make depending on who I’m with.

tbh, i wouldnt say im "into ocean ships". i go feral for ocean liners, correct, but like 98% of cruise ships ive come across are fucking awful. plus ro-ro ferries can also go fuck themselves. and im also not really into like battleships apart from a few specific cases, e.g. the hms captain (the last one to be given that name) because boy howdy was that ship terribly designed.

but like most ship aficionados, im am really into great lake ships. i mean, the great lakes themselves are like so fucking cool and honestly if i had to go to america, id like to see them. because of how unique the geography of the great lakes are (essentially inland seas with waves cresting much closer to one another), you get some really interesting ships coming out of it.

theres the more obvious ships that i find interesting like the fitz (edmund fitzgerald), the daniel j morrell and the bannockburn, but im not gonna retread common ground here; theres plenty of videos on youtube about them.

what i wanna talk about is whaleback ships:

they were dreamt up by captain alexander mcdougall and are a much obscure ship design for the lakes. only 44 were ever between 1887 and 1898.

see at that time, the size of a ship was limited mostly by a ships ability to get through lochs and rivers (and obviously materials + hull design theory) rather than power, which led to the common practice of one self-powering vessel towing several barges. and that became a problem when the seas were rough and the winds were howling. so mcdougall wanted to create a design that could easily be towed, which led to the whaleback design.

the hull of a whaleback is continuously curved, and the bow and stern were nearly identical. things like cabins were in the superstructure above the ship. when fully loaded, the hull would lay low in the water, giving it the eponymous whaleback look. it also looks a bit like a cigar.

while they were easy to tow and saw some success as self-powered vessels themselves, like the unfortunately named christopher colombus which was the only passenger whaleback vessel nicknamed "the queen of the lakes", they were flaws in the design. the curved hull made it harder to create watertight hatches, or hatches that would remain watertight as many warped. the working conditions were often poor as within the hull, its essentially a submarine. they were also quite vulnerable to and in collisions; they laid almost flush with the water so they were kinda hard to see.

i just find them very interesting and the design is actually kinda beautiful to me? idk, its just a bit of shipping history that doesnt get mentioned as much. the only remaining whaleback boat is the ss meteor which is now a museum ship.

also, as a certified yam-yam (a seemingly insane thing to call myself), i have to talk about canal boats/narrowboats.

see where im from in the uk has more canals than venice and thats a fact any comedian will turn into a joke if they do a show hear. i know theres at least one other semi-popular posts about narrowboats, but if you havent seen it, you might have seen them in peaky blinders because they were used to transport illegal goods amongst other things.

the canals (or cuts as they were also called) where im from were used a lot during britains industrial revolution in terms of transporting goods. and although canal travel declined due to several factors like better roads for cars, increase in rail travel (seriously, you can get a train to anywhere round here) and issues with wages, its still a pretty significant part of our local culture and history.

like in primary school, we were taught how locks work and i remember learning about all of the different kinds of narrowboats. im not gonna get into all of them because this post is long enough as is, but its safe to say, i have a personal attachment to narrowboats.

in the 60s, there was a restoration of canals and narrowboat tourism became popular. you can also live on a canal boat which one of my friends did for a while growing up.

plus we have a lot of very pretty architecture thanks to canals in the staffordshire ring/black country rings (its called the black country due to how much soot would emanate from factories as well as thick coal seam that came from the mines during the victorian era). the staffordshire ring is like a canal of a lazy river, i guess; it loops all the way round the area and surrounding areas.

i particularly enjoy this little area of the dudley canal part of the ring:

this part of our history also left a bunch of tunnels because canals went through things, and theres a lot of these tunnels. pretty sure theres a lot around the country in general? dont quote me on that; i know my local cut history better than the national canal history.

but anyway, you can walk through a lot of these tunnels such as the netherton tunnel:

which i walked, all the way through and back, as a young child with a headlight on that didnt work too well. me dad took me my brother and by the time we were on the homestretch, we had a single flickering headlight left. fun times.
