Join me, Stace your resident Divas nut, as I make cases for the female Greatest Wrestler Ever candidates. I’ll be going into all the reasons why I love them and will probably be voting for them, and recommending some matches to explore for yourself. Hashtag Give Divas a Chance!

Victoria is someone I had hoped to talk about on the For Your Consideration women’s episode with Will and Glenn (yeah, cheap plug right outta the gate!). Ultimately we couldn’t squeeze her on ahead of what were deemed more important people, and a more apropos metaphor there never was. Whether it was being painfully underutilized at times during her career, or the lack of interest she’s getting as a candidate now, Victoria always seems to be overlooked. No longer, I say!

Victoria had a fairly long career (for women) and built up quite the body of work along the way. If anything it felt like she spent longer in the company than just over six years. I think that’s because she spanned so many eras, coming in during the Golden Age in 2002, outlasting Trish and Lita and co., surviving the Diva Search era and even living to see the creation of the butterfly belt before she left.

She also played a wide variety of roles during her career, from the psycho heel coming in with a strong push, to her smiling dancing babyface run, and then back to heel, where she stayed for the rest of her career to varying degrees of success. There’s a lot to love in each of these phases: good matches, standout performances and strong character work.

Her initial run is probably what she’s most remembered for, being the crazy heel with that TaTu song and Stevie Richards in tow. She burst onto the scene in late 2002 and was immediately paired with Trish in what might have been the most overtly violent feud in WWE women’s history. They beat the absolute shit out of each other, most memorably in a hardcore match at Survivor Series and the Chicago Street Fight on Raw. They brawled all over the place every week and Victoria even delivered the first ever woman-on-woman chairshot in company history to Trish. Even their “straight” matches were brutal. These two got the chance to have, not a “catfight” with manure and spanking, but legit weapons matches just the same as the men were having, and they knocked it out of the park.

Trish remained her best opponent, and Victoria was one of hers too. Trish had more great matches with her than anyone else, and honestly, of all the top women’s matches from say 2002 to 2005, I’d say more than half of them were Victoria vs Trish. Victoria actually matched up pretty well with most girls. She was skilled and savvy enough to give the inexperienced women a base and make them look good, and then if she was in there with a worker they could tear it up, having good matches with women like Lita, Jazz, Molly, Gail Kim, Mickie and Michelle.

It’s a shame that her most high profile babyface match – the hair match vs Molly Holly at WMXX – was such a disappointment, because their other matches were quite good, and her babyface run in general is underrated. She held the division together in the ring in 2004, working super consistently and having a bunch of good matches with everyone. Her selling as a babyface was pretty great, for example when getting her arm worked over in the much better rematch with Molly at Vengeance.

Nevertheless, this woman was a born heel. The second half of her career she was back to goin’ ‘head with her bad self (I’m sorry, I irrationally love her entrance music). She really anchored things on the heel side for years, able to slot in to the title picture and then turn around and put anyone over when required. She never won the title again, but her anchor role was a vital one, especially in the wake of WWE losing every other wrestler from the Trish era. As time went on she was pushed even less and put over more girls (she didn’t win a single match in the last 9 months of her career, I remember keeping score) but honestly her last few years in WWE are my favourite of hers.

When she went to Smackdown in 2007 and went full stooge, I fell in love. She threw caution and dignity to the wind and completely embraced her role as a goofy jobber. She made an artform out of beating up some random girl and acting all cocky, only to get rolled up and pinned to her complete surprise. NOBODY got rolled up quite like Victoria. One such match is the one vs Cherry (you remember, the one in the roller skates with Deuce and Domino) which is legitimately my favourite squash match ever (is it still a squash when the squasher loses?) and frankly one of my favourite matches ever. Like, it’s in the Top 25, no shit. I have watched that match a thousand times.

Victoria just had total commitment. When there was a Halloween/Seasonal Divas Costume Thing on a show, all the other girls would come out as a sexy this or a cute that or a practically-naked whatever. Victoria, on the other hand, would dress up like this:

She worked the WHOLE FUCKING MATCH in that sumo suit by the way, AND took an insane bump over the top rope to be eliminated. What a worker. When there was a Divas Water Fight Thing on SD, all the other women came dressed in their sexy bikinis and cute cozzies. Victoria, on the other hand, came out like this:

And once again she stooged her ass off the whole match, slipping and sliding around like a buffoon. I swear Victoria was a better working heel in a sumo suit or a damn water fight than a lot of heels are in actual wrestling matches.

*sigh* I’m falling in love all over again just writing about it. So many memories are coming back to me now. Like when she was all mean and snarky during the Vince’s Devils run and wore a t-shirt that said “LET’S GET THIS OVER WITH” to a Bra and Panties match. Girl did not have time for that nonsense. Or when the Bellas first debuted and there being two of them was a “secret” and Victoria was the stooge who was constantly foiled as she tried to reveal it, the Wil E. Coyote to their Roadrunner. Or her great monster heel push at the end of 2006 where she had a checklist and ticked off all the women as she beat them on her way to Mickie, including trying to beat up Lilian. Or when she asked Michelle “got tickets to the gun show?” during an arm wrestling contest. Frankly I could go on with all the goofy heel things she did in 2008, but I digress.

In the ring Victoria had so many tools. She had size and strength and could convincingly work dominant, equal or underneath depending on opponent. She could stooge or be serious, and work face or heel. She sold well and could build compelling, layered matches, or just job like a goof. She had a great offensive arsenal full of cool moves – a nice superkick, the spinny sidewalk slam, the flipping leg drop over the ropes, her gyrating moonsault, too many moves to name, as well as that signature backwards bump out of the ring which always looked super nasty. And above all, she had the Widow’s Peak. The first time she hit it the crowd didn’t so much pop as GASP, like they thought she may have actually killed Stacy with it. What a fantastic finisher.

Victoria has a body of work that stacks up against almost any female wrestler’s in WWE. She worked all sorts of roles, did great character work, was a super consistent in-ring worker, and had some of the best matches of multiple eras of the women’s division. And she was such an awesome jobber that I wanted to marry her. There are many sides to her case, my point is she deserves a fair shake, as do many of the women I hope to highlight on PTBN in the coming weeks.

With Microsoft’s focus on the Xbox One X at E3, Gamasutra has been performing a series of interviews on the system. Following a discussion with Microsoft's corporate vice president for Xbox and the Windows game platforms Mike Ybarra on Friday about the “how” of porting games to Xbox One X and competition with Windows as a platform, today we talk to Microsoft’s senior director of product management and planning for Xbox Albert Penello, asking about the way the company is positioning the hardware to both developers and consumers.

Penello: When we announced Project Scorpio last year, we talked about building this console. What people didn’t know is we were actually building two consoles [in one]. We were building the one for our customers, but we were also building a bespoke unit specifically for developers, which we had a nice article with Gamasutra on a few months back.

I think the developer was as much in mind in how we built this machine as the consumer was. Because we knew we were introducing a new concept of doing a mid-generation console leap in performance, which hadn’t been done before—at least, when we were conceiving of it we didn’t know of the PS4 Pro. We needed to figure out how to make that process really easy for developers. So from the get-go we knew that we wanted to be able to take the existing engines that they were working on on Xbox One and get those engines up and running in 4K. And we knew we wanted the high resolution textures and assets that they were building for 4K PCs and give them a place to run in the living room. So I think the pitch is actually quite easy for developers, particularly ones that are making games on PC, which is: If you built an Xbox One game, the code, your dev tools, your systems, your profiling tools, everything you’ve done for Xbox One is going to work immediately out of the box.

I think the number of 4K televisions is going to grow exponentially in the next couple of years. I think it’s a great developer story that the effort and energy that you’re putting into 4K on the PC is going to have even more customers available on console now with Xbox One X. So I think it’s a great pitch: Really easy to develop for. Those 4K assets now can leave the monitor and go to the TV. And we’ve seen developers getting games up and running in hours. We’re hearing stories of two hours to get it up and running.

Well, sure. I mean, I think this industry, if you go back to the Atari 2600, more power always enables more creativity. So certainly a developer like the Ori guys are going to choose to use HDR and lighting effects and frame rate and use that performance in ways that makes sense for their artistic vision. They already have to figure out how to make their game engines work. So the idea to go from an Xbox One S to an Xbox One X is very easy. And, again, we focused on making that super simple for them from a development perspective.

You know the console’s there when the TV comes.

And we have been very thoughtful about making the 1080p experience on an Xbox One X really good. We have a faster hard drive so that games will load faster. We’re doing anisotropic filtering in hardware so that older Xbox One games that exist on the market will get better texture filtering. Games that run at dynamic resolution or dynamic frame rate will run at their max res and framerate on an Xbox One X. Again, we didn’t want to split the user base. The more different they are, the more we go back to your early point about having to do specific work. In fact, an interesting thing is happening, people ask this question, “Is Xbox One X held back by the One S or vice-versa?” And in fact, the tweaks you make to your engine, every tool improvement that we make to development makes Xbox One S and Xbox One X development better. Every tweak you make to your engine to get a little bit more performance out of your engine makes your Xbox One S engine better.

So, no, in fact, actually the strategy is quite the opposite. The strategy is to grow our tools to make our development environment better to make our profiling tools better so that that work benefits both consoles. In fact, if you talk to Turn 10, they’ll say that the tweaks that they made on Xbox One X allowed them to get dynamic weather back into Xbox One S. So they are very much a strategy of making one great development environment and really just separating the devices by performance.

And I think one of the things that the PC has done well for 40 years is that there’s a thread of compatibility—and sometimes things fall away, but for the most part you can go back and play really old PC games on a modern PC. So I like that idea. I like that concept and I think it’s one of the things we do a lot with Play Anywhere, and backwards compatibility is preserving and respecting the content, making sure your library goes with you.

We’re in a position at Microsoft with our backwards compatibility team and the way we architect our systems to try and bring those things into the future. So I don’t know exactly what the world’s going to bring. I think we’ll always embrace state of the art hardware tech, but I think that thread of compatibility is something that we believe really strongly in.

No. Because we’ve said, they [Xbox One and Xbox One X] are the same system. That is a question that I completely understand why a customer would ask, but if you go talk to developers they will say, “It doesn’t make sense.” It is one system.

That is like saying, “Would a developer ever make a game that only runs on a 1080 Ti?” Well, no I wouldn’t do it. Forget marketshare, it just—it’s a PC. It works on all of them, why would I do that?

We’re going to give them choice. We are going to sell more Xbox One S units than we will sell Xbox One X units. There are lots of customers that are having their first 13th birthday, that are just going to get their first console. There’s a lot of people who aren’t going to make the leap to 4K, or they’re on a budget and they want to just play games. And we have an unbelievably good console in the Xbox One S.

I’m not trying to get people to move off of the Xbox One S and onto Xbox One X. I’m trying to offer choice. I think there’s a great value on the Xbox One S and I think for the people that care, that want the best platform where the best versions of games are going to be, that’s going to be Xbox One X. And then for the developer, our job is to take away all the difficulty in harnessing the power of those two systems so I can continue to make my Xbox One engine great and tap that power in Xbox One X very easily.

Beef Products Inc. Has Beef With ABC News: “Pink Slime” Trial Begins

On Monday, both sides presented opening statements in what could become the biggest defamation trial in American history, the so called “Pink Slime” Trial. All of it happening in Union County South Dakota. (Despite ABC’s repeated attempts to move the case to federal court) Beef Products Inc. (BPI) told jurors how a series of ABC News reports in March of 2012 about its product, officially called “lean finely textured beef” (LFTB) and dubbed “pink slime” by critics, is to blame for the loss of 75 percent of its business. ABC, in turn, defended itself with a scathing attack on BPI’s product while upholding the integrity of its journalism.

Those who attended Monday heard two vastly different stories. BPI’s was one of entrepreneurship and destruction. ABC’s was about politics and secrecy.

Dan Webb, a former U.S. attorney and a partner at Winston & Strawn, went first on behalf of BPI. He took jurors through the story of Eldon Roth, a man who had grown up in South Dakota, never graduated high school, and through his unique mind and expertise with machinery, had founded BPI and created “game-changing technology” to transform the meat industry. BPI’s product was at one point found in 70 percent of the ground beef sold in supermarkets. The company was moving 5 million pounds per week. And Webb presented this as a welcome development because consumers got a good source of lean beef at more affordable prices while also benefiting the environment thanks to fewer slaughtered animals.

Then, ABC came along.

“It took 30 years to succeed, and it took ABC less than 30 days to severely damage the company,” Webb told jurors.

On March 7, 2012, the initial report about LFTB was broadcast on ABC’s World News. The report featured interviews with two microbiologists and made what BPI contends were defamatory implications about the safety of its product. Subsequent reports that month, including one that featured an interview with a former BPI employee, would lead to the impression in viewer’s minds, BPI argues, that its product isn’t really beef — nor even meat.

“They ignored the proper name,” said Webb. “When you have a major news organization that is calling the product ‘slime,’ witnesses will say they can’t imagine anything worse. It connotes something disgusting, inedible.”

“It physically doesn’t look like slime,” argued Webb as jurors were shown a picture of LFTB.

The attorney acknowledged that the term wasn’t coined by ABC. It came from a 2002 email by Dr. Gerald Zirnstein, former USDA scientist who was one of the individuals interviewed by ABC News. But Webb asserted that the “pink slime” term got “minimal coverage” before ABC repeated it many times on air and to BPI’s supermarket customers when reporters at the network aimed to figure out who was carrying the product. BPI’s attorney would then lean on the USDA task force approving the product in 1992 in support of the proposition that LFTB was indeed safe and the product’s labeling showing protein and iron content for the proposition that LFTB was indeed nutritious. As BPI is a big company deemed by the judge to be a “public figure,” BPI also has to demonstrate so-called “actual malice” to win a defamation claim. Webb presented ABC’s sources — Zirnstein, another ex-USDA scientist named Carl Custer, and “whistleblower” Kit Foshee, the former director of quality assurance and food safety at BPI — as biased individuals. He added that ABC and its correspondent and co-defendant Jim Avila had ignored “independent experts” who were willing to speak to the quality of its product.

In one story, Avila got on the phone with Dr. David Theno, who was a paid consultant in the agriculture industry. According to Webb, Avila hung up on Theno after hearing that LFTB was the safest component in ground beef. Theno thought the two had been disconnected. But Webb added that when Theno called back, Avila said, “Fuck you.”

“That’s what happens when someone tells ABC something different from what they wanted to hear,” said BPI’s attorney.

Webb ended his opening statements by contrasting what happened at the headquarters of ABC and BPI upon the announcement that the company was closing three of its plants after the fallout from the “pink slime” reports. Raising his voice in outrage, Webb said ABC staffers were congratulating each other in emails and “backslapping” each other. Lowering his voice with a solemn note, Webb talked about the press conference where hundreds learned they would be losing their jobs.

Becuase South Dakota is such a red state and a Trump state, ABC’s lawyers have been careful to angle their approach in a pro-conservative manner. For example, Butswinkas began a section of his opening statement geared towards all the reporting and commentary that preceded ABC’s by mentioning how Rush Limbaugh had expressed concern with how pink slime was being served to school kids and how the conservative icon had taken the government to task. Butswinkas made sure to mention how Limbaugh cited Custer and Zirnstein, too. The attorney added that the idea for ABC’s report was inspired by a story in the defunct web publication, The Daily, which Butswinkas added gratuitously was owned by the same company that owns Fox.

That Daily report, along with a Pulitzer Prize-winning 2009 exposé in The New York Times titled “Safety of Beef Processing Method Is Questioned,” showcased how “the air of secrecy was already deflating” by the time ABC got around to it, according to Butswinkas. What’s more, the attorney said “the dam had burst” two months before March 2012 when BPI lost its three biggest customers — McDonald’s, Burger King and Taco Bell.

But the real core of ABC’s opening statement was Butswinkas’ detailed review of the history and problems of LFTB based on BPI’s internal documents. Much of this has never been made public before and served as the reason for massive secrecy at the pre-trial stage. In sum, Butswinkas portrayed BPI’s product as maybe being far worse than ever advertised in the news. For example, the attorney spoke how the addition of ammonia changed the PH levels and how the product was treated with heat so as to resolve issues with bacteria including e. Coli and salmonella. But the problem, Butswinkas said evidence would show, was that the process was creating a nasty, musty smell and poor taste. So the PH levels were taken down again. When that happened, McDonald’s allegedly reported to BPI that its customers were getting sick, with BPI’s response being, don’t put too much of the product in your ground beef. On the day ABC’s report aired said Butswinkas, BPI’s product had a positive test for e. Coli.

Both sides will now present witnesses and evidence. BPI will first look to a marketing expert to testify about the reach of ABC’s so-called “campaign” to tarnish its product. The plaintiff plans to present findings from a survey about whether viewers got the impression that its product was unsafe, not nutritious, and not meat. When it is ABC’s turn, the network has its own survey lined up. Teased by Butswinkas, it evidently shows 102 out of 102 individuals preferred the visual of “traditional” beef to LFTB and 101 of 102 preferred the taste.
