Books of 2025: METAL FROM HEAVEN by August Clarke.
This is pitched as For Fans Of GIDEON THE NINTH (by which they mean: ow, and messy lesbians, with a side of immersive worldbuilding) and THE PRINCESS BRIDE (by which they mean: Inigo Montoya and Fantasy Politics). Personally, I would also comp it to ARCANE, for the aesthetics and Loadbearing Mysterious Malleable Resource and class warfare and explicit sex scenes lol.
The titular metal from heaven is ichorite, a weird and versatile substance that's kicking off an industrial revolution. The book opens with the brutal strikebreaking massacre that sets young Marney (our hella dyke--sorry, crawly--MC) on her quest for revenge: She's going to kill the foundry owner who had her entire family of striking workers gunned down. She gets adopted by crawly bandits and becomes a notorious highwayman and prepares for her revenge (because we hate capitalism in this house, and we're working for our Hereafter beyond it).
I loved the prose, I loved the POV fuckery, I loved the worldbuilding and religions and names and community and colors and aesthetics and the ichorite weirdness. I loved the exploration of gender and of grief, of revolutions and of cycles of violence. As soon as I finished, I immediately reread the first paragraph, and holy shit it broke my brain a little (affectionate, astounded).
If you're looking for a messy, raw, tragic, brutal struggle with grief and takedown of capitalism, this might be the book for you--it's definitely not for everybody, but it sure was for me!

I really do find it incredibly irritating how TOH plays all sides of the shipping board just because they don't want to upset shippers.
It's why you get Evelyn looking more like Luz than Willow - it's also why her face is never shown. Even if Dana didn't want to get into the Caleb/Evelyn and Philip murder drama, there isn't any reason for her face to be obscured UNLESS the goal wasnt to upset shippers
It's why you get Luz's type of of boy being angsty warrior princes like Hunter - it's also why all of Hunter's important moments involve Luz and not Willow.
This is why you get Hunter dying and coming back to life looking like Caleb pleading with Luz to help him fight Belos in TTT, but then his entire arc culminates with him holding pinkies with Willow FTF. This is why all the interesting themes Hunter brought to the table were completely kneecapped by his relationship with Willow.
It's fucking bizarre LMAO.

good-ending!kakashi and itachi need to have a little former traumatized geniuses cooking club where they get comfortable with making little "mistakes" and putting imperfect dishes on the table and improvising without needing to explain themselves like it's life or death
#the “former” is aspirational and v cute#probably sai and tenzo also join at some point#of course gai joins in occasionally because he's not to be outdone by his rival with cooking of all things#and also with these four it can get depressing quick#iruka is invited once as a courtesy when he shows up to work with one too many kitchen injuries lol#if there's one thing they're not the cooking club is not clumsy#... unfortunately he is quietly assigned a buddy any future attendances#usually itachi because itachi can put out fires very quickly#or sai because sai is (frustratingly) talented in the kitchen and doesn't feel he's missing out on practice#neji might also participate sometimes! he wasn't ever anbu but he probably needs the therapy-ness of it#he's not a huge group activities person but sai invites him and he's surprised by how low-key it is#he gets a little competitive with itachi lol#since itachi doesn't care about things like using all whole-grains or only organics or attempting to make a recipe vegan#he's very good at following directions don't get me wrong but he's not much of an experimenter unless he knows a dish super well#while neji just knows which replacements to use after doing it for so long#neji isn't super militant about it but he watches his diet to make sure it isn't imbalanced/overly protein heavy#and like itachi he doesn't care for strong tasting meat so he'll preferentially choose fish or plant proteins#this is what finally makes things more easy between the two of them! some of the others want to make a meat-heavy dish one time#but itachi isn't feeling it and neji shows him how to do a tofu alternative!#long tags#naruto#from the margins#hatake kakashi#uchiha itachi#hyuga neji#sai#yamato tenzo#umino iruka#omegaverse

#watched one of the films in the series my old prof sent me and it's like. yeah i see why i was obsessed w experimental stuff for a while#it's just sooo satisfying to get sucked into the meditative experience of watching something like this#+ like. there's a very particular experience wherein you're not waiting for anything to happen and you're not really being asked to questio#or read into anything but you Do have to Notice and Think to understand what the film is attempting to communicate#last year around? march or so i saw a screening of a film that was about a us specific historical event i wasnt familiar with#that for the life of me i cannotttt remember rn. but it had something to do with a blackout in chicago? or something adjacent#and it was upwards of 20+ minutes of newspaper articles about the event being fed through kaleidoscopic visuals#and even without the filmmaker being there and answering questions after the fact. if you thought about it for two seconds#you understand right away that it's about propoganda and how the us facilitates black stereotypes by routinely and strategically taking#right away then controlling the way the response to human rights violations is projected within the public#as well as how the cultural impact that has on black culture within art will eventually go on to be appropiated by the same white people wh#used the stereotypes it generated against them#idk why this is all in the tags but i have a migraine and im not retyping it#but yeah. good stuff lol. id watch more if i didnt have to be up early tomorrow morning. beach/river day!#&

#art#traditional art#watercolour#oc art#ocs#oc group: unsorted#oc: unnamed#THIS GUY from a dream i had a while back. i like him :) i should give him a name#i should specify for new followers that the bit in the dream was he was a mob goon in a childrens cartoon type character#the stick in his mouth is not a poorly drawn cigarette but a lollipop stick. he's rated y7 by the tv parental guidelines system#also this was drawn like a week and a half ago but i mentioned before my pens were acting strange#(as seen by the very wobbly (even more than usual) lineart in the second pic LOL)#so i was like perseverating on that and i didnt get around to colouring and scanning my drawerings until now <3#I THINK i know what the issue is now. i think my 4 year old bottle of fountain pen friendly waterprood ink is um#well overtime most pigment based inks get. dryer. pigments settle and fused into a thick layer on the bottom even if you shake it#and every time you open it water evaporates. some even evaporates from the seal itself as it sits there#so its a good idea to keep an eye on ur inks! i will need to do some experimentation with like reviving it LOL#for now you will see my linework get funkayy in nearly imperceptible ways as i experiment with other inks and bust out my dip pens again <3#something i should do more often! i lean on my fountain pens because theyre fast and immediate but theres nothing like certain dip pen nibs
