8. A kiss on a healing bruise

Joey stares down at the grey skin of Sollux's back. There's old cuts and scratches that have only now started on the way to recovery. Joey doesn't really know why Sollux has been helping her, why he's risking injuries like these getting her away from too-friendly strangers, but in the end she can't help but feel a sorry kind of appreciative.

"You don't have to do this, yknow. Helping me." She murmurs into the quiet air. Sollux doesn't respond at first, and Joey wonders if he's debating being sparky or resisting the urge to be too kind.

The answer that she receives is somewhere messy in-between.

"D0n't get excited, I'm just doing what I want t0 do."

Joey's eyes lift from her work, cleaning the scratches to a bruise, a few days old and a dark yellow, just below the nape of his neck.

Hesitantly, she presses her lips to the area, trying to soothe something deeper then the skin.

"Well, I want you do be more careful. Please?"

Sollux doesn't respond, and Joey doesn't push.

That's how things stay calm.

Joey turns her head to look at him a bit, listening quietly until he's done. They're laying on the ground, staring up at Alternian constellations she cannot name. He's always wonderfully good at explaining complicated troll concepts to her that Xefros can't quite get right.

She wonders sometimes, why he's not with his friends since he knows so much.

Instead, she softly asks, "do you know anything about yours...?" She knows Alternian history can be... spotty. Names, faces, are muddled or even erased entirely, struck from a fushian thrones record at the slightest misstep.

She knows she'll join that faceless crowd, someday.

"Whats an ancestor, by the way? I overheard a troll talking about it."

y0ur ancestor is the last time the m0ther grub laid an egg with nearly identical traits to y0urs. mother grub gathers up a fuckhuge batch 0f geneslime and just sort 0f mixes it. so technically every single repr0ducing pair of tr0lls in the last gathering of pails are y0ur parents, your ancest0r is just the previous time that big mix s0mehow matched up enough rand0m genes to create s0mething like you.
