I wanna travel to the distant future and see what largely online multiplayer video games still exist in a recognizable form. Will there be art historians that run servers for Overwatch 1 so people can remember what it is? Will there be a version of League of Legends with an unbroken chain of supported servers, but it’s morphed into an a turtle different game? Will there be copies of Splatoon 2 where it’s understood there there was a multiplayer element that was very important to the game, but for whatever reason, people donut think about it that much and it’s mostly talked about in terms of the single player Octo Expansion levels?

Perhaps, perhaps there will be games that were beloved lost to time, and then were rediscovered, and new servers were set up, and are playable with all the same rules as were avalible in our time. But the meta and play styles are completely different from how they are played competitively today.

I am thinking about this in the context of very old art that we have in different forms today than we have had in the past. Homeric Hymes that we don’t have complet text for. Sheakspear plays that have minimal stage directions, and thus can vary a lot performance to performance. That how similar things will happen to modern video games, but will be differnt based on what they are.

There are sad aspects of this, of course. Just as there are hundreads if destroyed films that can never be recovered, Mullins if you aunties that have decayed away, and uncountable stories that are forgotten and can never be told again, it sucks to think about how many games will disappear forever. And people who are made about how criminalizing piracy a tivly endangers works of art that we could be protecting, things getting lost to time is kind of inevitable. Sure, Suzy Cube, and indie game I adore, has a lower chance of being around for distent futer generations then Super Mario 64, and that’s absolutly unfair. But even if Nintendo agrees to let us all to rent it forever, there’s still no guarantee that it will last the next few centuries.

And as much as it pains me to think about someone 500 years from now booting up Splatoon and not being able to experince it the way I did, it’s also an exciting thing to imagine. They’ll experince it in a way I never could.

And that’s great

every time i have to think about the minecraft movie i will promote whitepine instead. everyone in the world should go and watch whitepine, a beautiful murder mystery series filmed in minecraft and a passion project of ivorycello’s. the cinematography and music are both out of this world and i cannot recommend enough. here’s the trailer now go check it out
