Alright hot take number 1 (I'll leave a different take for lilac's ask)
I am currently burnt out af with pretty much everything related to EPIC rn because of how toxic the fandom is. But in my opinion it's not really the fans of EPIC that are ruining it for me, it's the people who are hardcore into Greek mythology who are like "you can't do [literally insert anything] cause that isn't accurate!!" like??? This is Ao3??? if you want complete accuracy why are you here, cease knowing every language but archaic Greek and listen to a dude sing ancient myth then.
Being involved in a Greek mythology fandom (cause EPIC, but I've also seen this for PJO and TSoA) is like "please prove you have read every single translation of every single myth (but this one is my favorite and obviously correct!). You must acknowledge that all the characters are absolutely despicable and you should hate them, but also acknowledge that perhaps this character is morally complex and ancient greek morals were different and if you judge that, you're a stupid idiot who doesn't understand or appreciate it! Please show your PhD in classical greek studies (or proof that you were absolutely obsessed with this out of the womb). If you choose to accept a happier version of a myth, you don't truly appreciate the myth! If you join a fandom that gets too popular where at least one word of the material is not word for fucking word on par with Homer [or insert other ancient greek poet here] and you actually enjoy it, that's problematic! If you decide to write fanfic, make art, or interact with these fandoms in anyway and do a retelling where you change anything about the lore at all, fuck you. If you use this as a form of self exploration or relate to modernity or modern morality or past morality or happiness or tragedy in anyway, fuck you.
So I currently have no motivation to work on my fic right now. I'm actually not a huge fan of Greek mythology and tend to prefer it through modern fandoms. I know that there's a major argument that being part of Greek myth related fandom should get you more interested in learning about "accurate" Greek myth, which I have done in different times of my life. And yeah, I appreciate the cultural aspect of it but it's not a major interest of mine and I'm not exactly trying to teach you about Greek mythology like it's a college course. I just hate that a lot of the vibes around these fandoms eventually become "you must be this obssessed with Hellenism to enter!" like yes, officer, I've read the myth, can you just give me a ticket and go.
Like with HoM I'm gonna deviate like we're Tokyo drifting (and that's fine!) but I used to be so excited to work on it but now I just open my Google Doc and I'm like "mmm, some random person I've never met is gonna complain, what's the point in doing something that made me happy."
(Also I know that for a lot of artists recently, it's been the other way around where EPIC fans have been awful to them for having takes that don't mesh with fuckin Kate in Georgia or whatever, just everyone needs to get over themselves)

Talking about Characters from the Iliad/Odyssey that I liked a lot :3
(Alternative: I just talk about people who were on the page for like. A minute and then nothing because I really just wanted to talk about characters who weren’t like. As well known as others?)
Every day I fight the urge to talk about how much I dislike Song Of Achilles-
Okay anyways I wanna talk about characters from the like Iliad-Odyssey (sadly not Aeneid because I haven’t read that yet) that I really like because they always balance out the anger I feel when thinking about the artificial divide that had to happen between Pat and Achilles over Breisis is TSOA because-
Okay, okay aaa that’s not what this is about. If anyone wants to hear my thoughts feel free to tell me because I’d gladly give my take as someone who just kinda knows the myths and vibes with them (there’s a reason the Iliad is my favorite book)
Anyways characters/probably historical figures(??) from the Iliad/trojan war era and the odyssey that I really liked beyond like. The main crew. While I ramble note that I am just someone that likes these guys. I’m not giving amazing riveting new information. I just don’t really want to write out the SoN re-imagining nor do I want to try and revisit the Machaon and Podalirius concept work I was doing (or potentially mess around with some Ulysses dies at dawn concepts because aaa-) okay- okay,
I (obviously) like Machaon and Podalirius. Like I said I have some concept sketches of them buried in my Ibis paint somewhere. I really liked seeing them mentioned in the Iliad when they were, and the two of them just feel like an interesting concept to explore if I ever do more like. Actual mythology not just Pjo stuff here on the blog. Also this is devoid of anything but they have good character to bounce off each other and they live in my brain.
Palamedes! He’s not actually in the Iliad but was a prince who was in the Trojan war. He was the dude that had to fetch Odysseus and he’s also really interesting and I like thinking of him as the ‘straight-man’ to all of Agamemnon’s stuff before Odysseus took over the roll. I also really like his story :3
Is Sarpedon one of the more well known characters? Idk. I talk about Hector on here too so really I break my own rules but I like Sarpedon as a concept (you can tell I like a lot of these characters for the ideas they give the brain.) He’s an interesting fellow. Maybe one day I’ll actually have something insightful to say about him.
Okay Hector. I really like Hector, I like seeing him in conflict with his brother. I like the ideas and how Hector acts and how he like does stuff narratively. I like him for the same reason I like Demetrius in Midsummer nights dream. They’re both kinda just guys who have to put up with everyone around them and it’s silly. He also has the whole really big stone thing during the siege(?) of the Achaeans camps that was fun.
Now are the Odyssey guys and it’s literally just two people who caught my attention in the Odyssey.
Antinous. He was really like ahfiakfbsjjs in my mind. Between getting off the high that was reading the Iliad and being like gently laid down in the Odyssey I really liked him? He sucked don’t get me wrong, but I liked that he sucked. He was a little trash guy and I liked that, hand him over.
Peisistratus. For anyone who forgot him or doesn’t know who he is this is Telemachus’s friend and traveling buddy from Pylos. He just kinda appears at some point and I really like him. He feels scruffy in my head and I think he’s a really interesting character! Also I like the friendship between Telemachus and Peisistratus.
Also shoutout to Antilochus who I didn’t put down but he was also really fun.
Okay wow! I said literally nothing this entire post. But uh. Maybe I’ll actually post things more often about stuff like the Iliad and Odyssey? I’m obviously no like classics expert but hey. I like random people that are in my stories. Also Antinous. I genuinely didn’t think I liked him that much but now that I’m thinking about him he’s really silly- haha funny scruffy man. If anyone asks he is synonymous with the like-

This cat right there. Make it have an ego and boom. Antinous deserves like everything that’s coming to him in the Odyssey and it’s really fun to just watch him rampage
Okay I’m really tired goodnight
#idk how to tag this#hehe :3#the iliad#the odyssey#no substance post#I’ve only done tags for Pjo what do I use-???#oh well#okay bye

because what’s it all for if it goes unremembered? it’s the art that leaves the mark. but to leave it, it must transcend. it must speak for itself. it must be true.
portrait of a lady on fire, directed by céline sciamma // seven by taylor swift // poet by bastille // immortal by marina // tim mcgraw by taylor swift // black sails xxxviii, directed by jonathan e. steinberg
#look. i'm sorry for this i know the world doesn't need yet another poalof post. but i just. love that scene with the bouquet embroidery. sm#the marina quote felt a bit out of place at first bc the point is art preserving and immortalizing - everything. not specifically love#but the bs quote ties it back in - cause in order to immortalize something truly it has to come from a place of true love#in order to pass on and communicate anything it has to be true#if this post was completely self indulgent it'd have 'i stood with you through how it feels to be something on/Time played my favorite song'#cause that's It for me that song is everything this is trying to say. but the line itself needs context to make sense so.#and it works almost exactly like tim mcgraw esp in the way that it stays within a specific genre#iconic emo albums for the ages#anyways!#portrait of a lady on fire#☠️#&&#ohhhh and one last thing. and this became clear to me when i read tsoa a few months back - i personally don't really vibe with the whole#'what's it all for if it goes unremembered'#the point is more the power of art; specifically the power of music#both in preserving a person and a relationship but also a memory#it's more about. preserving as an act of love. and not as a search for glory#esp when it's all you can do when you couldn't save the rs (seven) or can't talk about it except through art (poet)#love u jack but i simply can't relate

The song of Achilles rant by a sleep deprived person!
-----------Spoiler warning for the content of The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
Please correct if i say something incorrectly here. It's 4 am and my brain won't shut up about this and I'm saying all of this at the top of my head.
Please remember that this is just my opinion. I promise im not actually mad about this /srs
As much as i love tsoa it's not a perfect book. It has its fair share of flaws
I have a major issue about how some characters are portrayed in the book and i think out of the entire cast Patroclus gets it the worst.
I do not like the "uwu shy boy" vibes Patroclus gives throughout the book. This is not a "oh no, somone looked slightly bad at me, im going to cry over here now since it hurt my feelings" sort of guy. He is a "i could kill you if i wanted to, but you're really worthy of that much effort" sort of guy. My man was a badass.
Patroclus was a warrior and a doctor.
He killed another child when he was but a kid over a game of dice.
He killed twelve men alone (one of them being a son of ZEUS) when he was pretending to be Achilles.
He almost infiltrated troy ALONE but Apollo stopped him from doing so.
Hector was able to kill him since he was already weakened by Apollo's interference.
A actual GOD had to get directly involved to stop patroclus from getting into Troy's walls.
And he was trained by Chiron, he was a terrific medic.
When Achilles refused to fight any longer for a Agamemnon's battle that was made worse because of his pride, Patroclus took apon himself to take care of his fellow comrades. If it weren't for his help and medical knowledge it's most likely the Greeks would of had to deal with way more casualties.
I feel the need to emphasize this:
Patroclus was not a damsel in distress. He was not in need of Achilles's contant protection as Miller portrays him as.
Patroclus was Achilles's partner both in love and in battle for a reason.
I would say this is my biggest beef with tsoa to be honest. But like i said i love this book. It's one of my favourites. And i can excuse all that i mentioned before and have an actual good time reading this books because of a couple of reasons.
For starters miller's way of describing things and telling a story is really nice to me. Like i could feel Patroclus's emotions as if they were my own. I could feel, touch, taste his love for Achilles.
And besides tsoa is a retelling of an epic written by a poet who was writing about a story of a war (based on a historical event that may or may not have happen). All of this, Achilles and Patroclus's relationship, the war over helen, Odysseus, might not even have happen. So why be upset over a piece of fiction.
If you wanted an accurate depiction of the trojan war and of Achilles and Patroclus you would read the source material. The Iliad. (Which you should totally do if you haven't already, it's a classic for a reason).
At the end of the day it's still a story. A retelling of a relationship detailed in the original source.
A good tragic love story about two men who loved each other so much that they would know eachother even in death.
To the point where they were made of memories.
#the song of achilles#tsoa#tsoa achilles#tsoa patroclus#tsoa patrochilles#patrochilles#it's 4am#i am going insane because of these two guys#they found their way back into my brain#curse them#tsoa spoilers#the brainrot is back#and stronger than ever

Hi hello 8, 16, 34! For the asks :)!
thanks for asking :D
8. What’s your favourite band/artist?
I wish a could choose easily and I wish I could say I’m A Girlie of a specific artist but unfortunately I’m not, but if I had to say one I listen to a lot of mitski, queen and billie eilish
16. Want any tattoos? What of?
I do want tattoos ~theoretically~ bc my pain tolerance is non existent, and if I were to get them I would 100% get something lotr or tsoa inspired (I am nothing if not a basic book tattoo girlie)
34. What’s your favourite flower?
My favourite flower is baby’s breath solely for The Aesthetic and the dark academia vibes <3

I'm the last "Madeline Miller" anon, and I took your advice and went through your tag, and... oh, boy. I knew it was bad, but I didn't think it was THAT bad, because I stopped reading her works at The Song of Achilles as, IMO, it read more like a fanfic printed on paper rather than a professionally published novel (not a diss for fic writers, I'm one too, I'm talking about the general vibe of the story).
The very American point of view of "I know this story has been around for thousands of years but I can write it better because I'm an enlightened American", the seemingly mandatory rape scene in which the woman is completely helpless and this trauma will make her stronger (how is this feminist, again? How is this not a way to rationalize the amount of SV women go through, rather than denouncing it? Because it all sounds like rape is treated as a necessary rite of passage, for women, something that will make us stronger and more complex human beings, rather than, you know... being an extremely traumatic event we could've gone without), describing the skin tone of people with food rather than actual color (I didn't know that she had done that, I read TSoA translated, and apparently the translator decided to completely scratch that way of describing skin. "Nut colored"... give me a break).
Everything about Madeline Miller, including her extremely patronizing interviews/articles, really screams "American who went to vacation in Greece and through her two weeks at an exclusive resort found herself and now will screech at anyone who wears an Evil Eye and doesn't look a certain way, including actual Greeks".
Americans will write thousands of words about how cultural appropriation is bad, but the moment the people they are appropriating from don't look a certain way, then they can take our stories and myths and religions and they can misread them and tear them apart and insert into them whatever newest American trend and claim that, if we complain, then we are racist and antifeminist because they are so much more advanced than us stupid Med people.
God forbid we want Circe's name to be read correctly and her to not be raped...
Yuuuppp that's exactly it!!
#answered#sorry I don't have to add much you pretty much said everything!#Madeline Miller#writing#retellings#xenoi doing bs#greek speaks

i just read The Song of Achilles because of all your posts discussing the parallels between them and bakudeku, and it is crazy how similar their vibes are. i absolutely love their story, so i wanted to thank u for bringing it to my attention💕 also the ending had me crying so bad...if they didnt meet in the afterlife, idk what i would have done🙃💕 also also, them meeting in the afterlife with a long-awaited handhold, had me thinking "what if bkdk's handhold is like that😦"
IM?? OH MY GOD?? JEISOSKWLDJWKDJWMKSO
first, im so happy that you enjoyed the book! tsoa owns a piece of me and i still have not found an answer as to how to move on
second, i didnt realize i talk about tsoa sm ehdkajdmwnd i thought i talk about it a decent amount and then i checked my posts and saw how many times i dropped hints of it and im soeuwks
but also?? you’re so welcome!!! tsoa on its own is such a good work of literature, but the parallels with bakudeku is my favourite. the cores of each couple and the struggles they face, along with the longing and the desire to be together only to be torn by fates—all of it is so poetic *wistful sigh*
NO BECAUSE AHDKSKEKZ this post about them not meeting each other in the afterlife was something that plagued my mind after taking greeks course. it’s an intro to ancient greece so there are gaps in my knowledge, but from what i’ve learned (in regards to their myths and literature) is that the afterlife consisted of three areas: the asphodel meadows, the elysium, and tartarus. the thought that patroclus and achilles wouldn’t meet in the afterlife is because of the ways the underworld pass judgement onto souls.
the asphodel meadows is where most dead people would go to, while the elysium is reserved for the heroes. the intrusive thought was born from me thinking that by all accounts, patroclus would not have been allowed inside the elysium because while he fought the trojan war, he was not a hero. in the same breath, achilles would not have been allowed outside the elysium because heroes were only allowed to stay in the elysium. thus, patroclus would have been stuck within the asphodel meadows while achilles would have been stuck in the elysium, never to see each other ever again.
had madeline miller followed this judgement of the souls, i think i wouldn’t recover. imagine reading patroclus being denied his burial—leaving his soul stuck in the trojan shore and worlds away from achilles—then being granted passage to the underworld only when thetis finally wrote his name beside achilles’ in their now-shared tomb, and arriving there only to find out that he will never be with his beloved again? i probably would’ve flooded our house.
BUT IT DIDN’T TURN OUT LIKE THAT AND THEY MET AND THEY REACHED OUT THEIR HANDS AND WERE FINALLY, FINALLY, REUNITED. AAAHHHHH
AND I SEE WHERE YOU’RE COMING FROM ABOUT THE BKDK HAND HOLDING BEING LIKE THAT

like this^ has so much bkdk potential, i can’t even compress it without gushing again
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ASK!!! I RAMBLED AGAIN SO DO FORGIVE ME HDKSOSKWMA and definitely not crying at this ask because it’s just so soft. no sir.
#anon#ask#IM SO HAPPY THAT YOU ENJOYED THE BOOK!!! IVE NEVER RECOVERED FROM IT#uhmmm i also have a tsoa playlist if you want djsjjdsn#ok but#I?? DIDNT KNOW I TALK ABT TSOA THAT MUCH IM???#i seriously thought i only have like five posts about it ahdksnsm#bakudeku#long post

meg!! beloved!! how are the vibes?? what are your favourite books you've read this year so far??? hope all is well <33
AHHH MYLE MY BELOVED HELLO! :D tysm for the ask icon! :)
1. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
There’s just never a break 🦧 I loved it though <3 like I never knew what tf was going to happen next 😭😭 literally wild
2. Emma by Jane Austen
Jane Austen Stan first, human second 😔
3. Kim Jiyoung Born 1982 by Cho Nam-Joo
It very much pissed me off, which I’m very glad it did. Because something awful and sexist will happen to the Mc and then it will put “and this happens to over 90% of all women in Korea” like??
4. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and The Iliad by Homer
Causing drama by putting them next to each other 🥰 anyways the tsoa is good in like a accessible less violent sexist, romance way. While the Iliad is just everyone is fucked up including the gods 🦧 both are fun (and sad) in their own rights <3
5. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Janie Crawford is such an iconic protagonist and I love her very much <3
Honorable mentions: Frankenstein and that’s it 😭😭

bestie if there was a way to fight your sleep schedule i would do that for you >:(
oh wow yeah !!! lurking and typing in the chat is just. my entire vc experience shdklfjdsf. either that, or sitting entirely still and breathing as lightly as possible so i don't make any sound, but it still looks like i have my mic unmuted.
!!! right. "*waves goodbye like im some woman with a hat in the 1920's watching my lover leave on a boat* farewell jatp hyperfixation! may you return to me soon with many gifts including but not limited to a GODDAMN SEASON 2." FHSDKLFJLSDF I LOVE THAT. SO MUCH. that is exactly what i'm going to be thinking of if/when i ever change my pfp-
it's honestly a little scary how much some people write fhsdkljf. how??? so technically. i've published one (1) fic, for jatp. but unofficially, i have a bunch of google docs for a lot of different fandoms. i wrote stuff for jatp, tua, marvel, kotlc, and probably a lot more but i either forgot them or they're kind of embarrassing so <3 i swear though, i'm writing a marvel fic now-ish and i wILL FINISH THIS ONE. and i'm also planning a jatp x tsoa au, and then in general i'd just like to have more. substance fhsdkljf.
OH MY GOD !!!! DUDE DUDE DUDE. that sounds wonderful and the vibes !!!! incredible. "i'd definitely have a few bookshelves and i'd organize the books so they're not all vertical so they look *aesthetic* and then i'd put some lil fake plants everywhere and i'd put fairy lights EVERYWHERE" THIS!!! SO MUCH AESTHETIC. i love everything about your bedroom holy shit <3
i have never heard that motivational saying but good gOD that's stupid. jesus that's just ???? so stupid wtf.
YES YES YES YES YES !!! i love writing, i really do, and when you can just GO and write the hell out of something. even if you never publish it!! it's still just. so fun and cool.
hfsdljfskd that is certainly a list /lh. the only reason i can talk is that i never write tv shows down, i just forget them all *lip bite* (that was. something, and not a good something fjsd). !!!!! i've heard of all of those, except elementary, and they apparently are all very good! i'm going to write those down on one app and then forget where i put the list and. hence why i never watch anything lmao
i've been meaning to watch,,,, uhhhh. atypical, toh, criminal minds, finish b99. and a lot more i just can't remember them. are most of them just bc that's what my mutuals have watched? mAybe but so what- i swear i do have original ideas. sometimes. maybe.
oh damn,, idk. movies are really cool because there's more of a Vibe, and they're definitely easier for me to watch. and it's pretty incredible what people can fit into a one to two hour film. but tv shows are great for something more casual? and i feel like it's much easier to find a fandom for a show than a movie. idk. there's probably a limit, i'm just not sure what it is yet. something with over ten seasons would definitely be less appealing than something with 2 or 3. i'd say 40 min episodes, because it's easier to have a story with more time, and it hopefully wouldn't be rushed. and it feels more substantial? or less like "oh man i watched 30 episodes in one sitting jesus cHRIST".
i think a forest. the idea of being stranded in mountains feels a little scary ngl, and while there is a lot of shelter, that's also a lot of climbing. so maybe not best for survival, and i also don't know where to get food on a mountain. island sounds nice, but i think a forest would be cooler :)
if you could have any job, even if it isn't something that's an actual job (like tumblr blogger, etc) what would you choose? would YOU rather be stranded on an island, in a forest, or in the mountains? if you made a tone indicator that doesn't exist already, what would it be? do you have any pet peeves? - 🌵
hfsdfjsfl thanks you and me both bestie <3
oh my god no i do that too!! i dont want ppl to like. notice that im muted or anything so im just. silent like 'do not perceive me"
dude i've changed my pfp a bunch and it feels so weird like jatp i love you but- ????? sdfjejsdigisjkf
JATP TSOA ??? BESTIE YOU OWN MY HEART??? YOU WILL BREAK IT ???? you break jules heart?? you break it like the *shit whats a thing you break* mirror during an angsty movie scene??
thank you if only it could be a thing lmao <3
yeah it's real dumb. im very tired
yeah exactly!! like just the feelings of words pouring out of you so fast so fast is just amazing and so satisfying.
LIP BITE SDFGSGHSDLKJFSDKLFJSLDF PLEASE. ok no that's such a mood though, writing it down and then forgetting where you wrote it. literally i just remembered today i had a list of movies i've been meaning to watch. and then i found 3 separate notes because apparently i kept forgetting lol.
ahhhh omg cm!! criminal minds is pretty good and omg b99 my BELOVED!! can't really speak to the other ones but i've heard they're good so :D
yeah that definitely makes sense, tv shows are for sure more casual. in a weird way movies sometimes feel like more commitment? even though shows are technically longer lol. LMAO something over ten seasons... bestie do not watch criminal minds there are 15... yeah 40 minute episodes are great!!! i feel like also it really depends on the vibe of the show!! like if there was a 40 minute sitcom episode i don't think i'd be able to watch it.
oooooh omg forest yes that's so valid. a forest would definitely be cooler :D
i would choose to be an Emotional Support Jules™. my only purpose would literally just be to vibe around whoever hires me and give them hugs and positive energy. im portable and i can travel with them if they pay for my plane ticket :D batteries sold separately
huh idk being stranded anywhere is very scary but uhh. forest so maybe we could be in the same forest and we could find mushrooms together!!
ooooh a tone indicator that doesn't exist. hmmm. i don't know if this counts for tone but maybe just like /v and /a when venting about something, /v for just venting without wanting advice and /a for when you do want advice? just so people know how to respond.
dude i have so many pet peeves and uhhh. i forget every single one of them. im sorry bestie.
questions for you: what would your ideal job be, even if it's not an "official" job? would you rather have a mattress that is too hard or too soft? your thoughts on country music? do you enjoy icebreakers? if you didn't have to sleep, would you still choose to?

Circe | Book Review
Genre: Fantasy
Author: Madeline Miller
Publication Date: April 10, 2018
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
"'You are wise,' he said.
'If it is so,' I said, 'it is only because I have been fool enough for a hundred lifetimes.'"
Another modern retelling of an age-old Greek classic by Madeline Miller, Circe follows the story of the titular witch and goddess. Circe is a naiad, and the daughter of the Titan Helios, God of the Sun, and Perse, an Oceanid nymph. Despite her divine parentage, Circe was considered to be ugly (although in mortal standards she was still a beauty) and talentless, unlike her siblings, causing her to be ignored by her family.
After reading Miller's previous book, The Song of Achilles, which was amazing by the way, I immediately started reading her next book, Circe. Let me tell you, it was just as spectacular! I expected the book to be similar to TSoA, but I observed a lot more differences on the contrary. For starters, the Odyssey isn't a huge focus in the story, mostly focusing on Circe's life as a whole, compared to TSoA where the story was mostly about Patroclus' POV during the Trojan War. The overall vibe was also distinct, with TSoA being more dramatic, while Circe feels more… lonely, I suppose.
The book does a spectacular job introducing readers to different mythological events and figures, such as the Titanomachy, Scylla, Hermes, Odysseus, and many more. Miller writes as if it's the first time we are ever encountering them, and because it's also Circe's first time encountering them, it feels natural and doesn't feel forced. However, there are a couple of events where Circe never appeared in, such as the birth of the Minotaur, and it kinda feels like fan fiction (I guess the entire novel IS fan fiction) which I never experienced while reading Miller's previous work.
The writing is superb, and enthralls readers to keep on turning page after page without confusing them with verbose sentences and complex words. I found the themes of acceptance to be moving. As I mentioned before, Circe was shunned for not living up to her lineage. But later on in the book, she decides to reject her divinity and embrace mortality, alongside the weakness, fragility, and imperfections that come with it because she learns that even though something has an end, it is beautiful because of it.
I liked Circe's portrayal in this book. Originally, she was more of an obstacle to overcome in the Odyssey, but Miller transforms her into a sympathetic figure. I found myself relating to Circe's feelings of solitude and alienation. Seeing her grow from a helpless goddess into a witch that can stand on her own while still retaining some flaws was very satisfying. I also enjoyed how the book depicted a lot of the gods as vain, petty, and cruel, which I thought was pretty accurate to the myths and what I imagined them to act like in reality.
It's no surprise that I like this book. I was instantly hooked by the first chapter. Circe by Madeline Miller is a spectacular introduction to Greek mythology, and a wonderful book because of its gripping story. It's well-written, fun to read, and meaningful. Even for those disinterested in Greek myth, it's still worth your time. For those looking for a complex story that is entertaining and thoughtful, you ought to give this one a try.
