a little animation i made with Somnus and Lemnos last year. it's one of the first things i drew with them! still really happy with it
ID (copied from alt):
An animated digital drawing of Somnus and Lemnos lying together in bed. Lemnos is on the left, his face turned into the pillow with one hand tucked up with his cheek. Somnus is facing him, with hir eyes open and hir hand cradling the back of Lemnos' head, tangled into his hair. A burst of static electricity runs through Somnus' hair, and the light catches on Lemnos' cartilage earring. /end ID

Asteroid Mors-Somnus 341520
Helios– Fair warning, these guys are not going to be for everyone. Some of the ideas I present may be shocking to you, and you probably won’t realize why. That is all right, and totally normal. That being said, lets get into the fascinating binary of Mors-Somnus
The Astronomy– 341520 Mors–Somnus is a trans-Neptunian object (TNO) that resides in the Kuiper belt and was discovered on October 14, 2007. It is classified as a plutino, which means that it is in the 3:2 mean motion resonance with Neptune. Mors–Somnuswas named on June 2, 2015 after the mythological Roman gods of death (Mors) and sleep (Somnus). Mors–Somnus is a small double plutino occupying the 3:2 mean motion resonance with Neptune. The object is a wide optically resolved binary with the following orbital parameters.
The Mythology– Okay, lets take them at each of their parts.
Mors: In ancient Roman myth and literature, Mors is the personification of death equivalent to the Greek Thánatos. The Latin noun for “death”, mors, genitive mortis, is of feminine gender, but ancient Roman art is not known to depict Death as a woman. Latin poets, however, are bound by the grammatical gender of the word. Horace writes of pallida Mors, “pale Death,” who kicks her way into the hovels of the poor and the towers of kings equally. Seneca, for whom Mors is also pale, describes her “eager teeth.” Tibullus pictures Mors as black or dark.Mors is often represented allegorically in later Western literature and art, particularly during the Middle Ages. Depictions of the Crucifixion of Christ sometimes show Mors standing at the foot of the cross. Mors’ antithesis is personified as Vita, aka Life. Mors is the offspring of Nox (Night), and sibling to the personification of sleep, Somnus. Mors is often connected to Mars, the Roman god of war; Pluto, the god of the underworld; and Orcus, god of death and punisher of perjurers. In one story, Hercules fought Mors in order to save his friend’s wife. In other stories, Mors is shown as a servant to Pluto, ending the life of a person after the thread of their life has been cut by the Parcae, and of Mercury, messenger to the gods, escorting the dead person`s soul, or shade, down to the underworld’s gate.
Hypnos: In Greek mythology, Hypnos is the personification of sleep; the Roman equivalent is known as Somnus. Hypnos is the son of Nyx and Erebus. His brother is Thanatos, and both siblings live in Hades or in Erebus, another valley of the Greek underworld. According to rumors, Hypnos lives in a big cave, which the river Lethe (“Forgetfulness”) comes from and where night and day meet. His bed is made of ebony, on the entrance of the cave grow a number of poppies and other hypnotic plants. No light and no sound would ever enter his grotto. According to Homer, he lives on the island Lemnos, which later on has been claimed to be his very own dream-island. His children Morpheus (“Shape”), Phobetor (“Fear”) and Phantasos (“Imagination, Phantasy”) are the gods of the dream. It is claimed that he has many more children, which are also Oneiroi. He is said to be a calm and gentle god, as he helps humans in need and, due to their sleep, owns half of their lives. His wife, Pasithea VII, was one of the youngest of the Graces and was promised to him by Hera, who is the goddess of marriage and birth. Pasithea is the deity of hallucination or relaxation.
Why They Matter– Yes, I know- Another death god! Blame the IAU, the people who decided that Pluto wasn’t a planet anymore; They make these rules. Anyway, these guys fascinate me. Drawing on the myths you would get one idea of them- a harsh and cruel death god, like Orcus, but that isn’t quite the case. They seem to be one of the gentlest TNOs there are, even more than 1992 QB1!
What if all of our fears about Death were wrong? What if instead of the end, it was a sublime experience without end? What if it didn’t have to be scary? Mors-Somnus represents this- the peaceful death, slipping away from this life in bed, surrounded by loved ones. No pain, no struggle, just… a good death. Harry Potter fans would relate to them being the idea of meeting Death as an old friend, at the end of a long, long journey. They are an equalizer, as Death comes to us all. Mors-Somnus is also the concept of not having to fear or fight death, just accepting it as the meaning of life. They call to us, not with a shout or demand, but rather as the friend who comes up to you and takes your hand. Of course, they have the hypnotic and mesmeric side of Hypnos, so it could all just be an act- a clever ruse to hide a monster beneath, but I don’t think that is the case. They specifically rule death experiences you experience while still alive, like LSD or Ayahuasca trips; Ethenogens are a perfect way to connect to these guys.
The reality is that for a certain part of our population, life is constant agony. For those people, life is a burden, and in such a case Death would be a gift. The tragically sick who would rather not suffer, Mors-Somnus aids, without judgement or prejudice. In fact, no matter who you are, what you did or how you died, Mors-Somnus greets you in Death lovingly. Mors-Somnus also represents the mystery of the veil between worlds, only atoms thin yet completely impenetrable. They also represent a point of great surrender and trust in an unkowable power; with all our works and all of our faiths, Death is still the one mystery that we will never truly unravel. For that, it will always hold a certain mystique and power, making our too-short lives all the more precious. There was a popular comic strip that went around, saying that “Life and Death have been in love for longer than we have words to describe. Life sends countless gifts to Death, and Death keeps them forever“. How beautiful an existence where love is at the heart of all things, but most importantly we find the greatest love at the end of our journey! With Mors-Somnus, we are born into cold and fear, but die to Love.
To find out where they show up in your chart, go to astro.com, put in your birth details and in the extended options, all the way at the bottom of the next page, there will be a menu of additional objects. it's time for a meme dump from my dnd campaign
IDs copied from alt below:
1: A page of doodles. Most prominent is a sketch of Somnus wearing a t-shirt that reads "I'm not the step-dad, I'm just the guy that is homoerotically obsessed with this kid's mom." He is sweating while Juliana lurks behind him, scowling with her eyes glowing red in fury.
On the right of that sketch is a two-panelled meme where the first panel is Catalina saying, "They'd be so lost without me. I'm basically the leader." while Somnus and Lemnos exchange amused looks behind her, Lemnos winking at Somnus. There is an arrow pointing to Catalina with the caption "This tall child is lying to you." The second panel has a caption that says, "two weeks later" and shows Catalina struggling to control Somnus and Lemnos on leashes, as if they are toddlers (Lemnos is trying to run away, and Somnus is collapsed on the ground).
On the far left of the page, there is a doodle of Lemnos saying, "If I had a copper for every time I've been turned to stone, I'd have three copper, which isn't a lot but why the fuck has it happened thrice??"
Along the top of the page are doodles of Elyk the fox and Lillion the cat, captioned with their names.
2: A yellowed wanted poster depicting Catalina. It reads: Wanted: This tall child is lying to you. Contact Neverwinter authorities with information for gold reward.
3: Similar in style to the wanted poster, a sketch depicting Catalina in the Hall of Fame at the Coin Toss. The portrait is in a sketchier style, and the text reads: Hall of Fame. Catalina, Coin Toss Extraordinaire, 7 Uktar 1500.
4: Somnus and Lemnos as the Barbie and Ken mugshot meme. Somnus stands seriously on the left in full armour, holding a placard reading "Somnus, NWPD" while Lemnos stands posed and grinning on the right, holding a placard reading "And Lemnos, NWPD". Somnus is 6'1" and Lemnos is not quite 5'8"

everybody scream and clap for them or im blowing this whole website up
mine and @michaelburnnham's beloved OCs, Somnus and Lemnos, from our dnd campaign. they're a warped bodyguard/bodyguarded dynamic. they are a queerplatonic t4t couple but one of them isn't out and doesn't plan to be. they are codependent disasters. they are causing extreme concern to everybody around them. <3
their three big eras: pre-exile (Dell and Mavis), separation arc (nameless), and present day (Somnus and Lemnos).
after Mavis' life was put in danger by corrupt city officials, Dell faked his death and they fled Silverymoon. the strain of losing their identities caused them to have a fight a few months into exile, resulting in a three-month separation that sent Somnus spiraling into depression and paranoid delusion and Lemnos spiraling up into mania and psychosis. they reunited by chance when Somnus' paranoia-induced fugue state led him to stab Lemnos, with delusions of invincibility, through the chest. they have been inseparable ever since, and four years later still travel together weirding out strangers with their somewhat incomprehensible dynamic.
-
ID (copied from alt text): Three side-by-side full body drawings of Somnus and Lemnos in different eras. The first, on the right, shows them pre-exile, as Sir Dell and Lord Mavis Fulmine. Dell is a tall, well-built young human with medium brown skin and long dark brown hair tied up in a bun. He has brown-black eyes and is clean shaven. He is wearing silver plate and chain mail, decorated with the Silverymoon unicorn. His cape is light blue with a silver trim at the hem, and he is wearing a silver shield on his back. He has his right hand resting on the ornate scabbard of his longsword. He has an open expression with a slight smile.
Mavis, standing slightly in front of him on the right, is a short, thin half-elf with light brown freckled skin and long black wavy hair, fastened up. His eyes are medium-brown, and his earlobes pierced. He is wearing an all white suit; a sheer button-up shirt with a floral lace pattern, showing his bra underneath, a suit jacket draped over his shoulders, slacks, and white dress shoes. He has his right hand (viewer's left) in his trouser pocket, and his other resting on his leg, showing a couple of rings. He has a French manicure on his nails and some delicate white eye makeup. He is smirking with one eyebrow raised.
The second image shows Somnus and Lemnos in their separation arc. They look dramatically different, are standing slightly further apart, and have contrasting backgrounds; Somnus stands backlit on a dark grey background, while Lemnos is surrounded by a bubbly multi-coloured backdrop. Where the two people meet, the dark grey background cuts into the rainbow bubbles with forks of lightning.
Somnus is wearing the same armour as he did as Dell, but with Silverymoon's unicorn sigil covered up and a darker, plain cape with equally plain scabbard. He is much thinner, his armour and face are covered in dirt and streaks of blood. His hair is loose and tangled, partially covering his face, and he has a short scruffy beard. His right hand (viewer's left) crackles with electricity, and he holds his bloody sword drawn in his left. There is a spark of light in his visible eye, and he scowls out at the viewer with his shoulders drawn up and head tilted down.
Lemnos' hair has been cut dramatically shorter to a messy bob, and he has numerous new piercings in his face and ears, as well as a huge snake tattoo that starts at his clavicle, curls up to his neck and down his arm, and then finishes with the tail at the base of his sternum. He is scantily dressed in a black bra, black leather shorts, spaghetti-strapped high-heeled shoes, and a long flowing red robe with fur trim, which shows off the stretch marks on his belly. He has various jewellery, notably a sun and moon pendant around his neck. He has messy black nail polish and tear-streaks of black makeup down his face. He is smiling, dreamily, looking off to the right, while his hands rest near his waist and hips.
In the third drawing, Somnus and Lemnos are back to the positions they started in, overlapping slightly more. Somnus' hair is cut shorter to a bob that has grown out slightly, hanging loose at his shoulders. He has well-kept stubble and tired lines under his eyes, with a neutral expression. He is only wearing the breastplate of the Knight in Silver armour, over a plain black doublet. He is wearing a dark blue-grey cloak, holding a wooden shield with dark steel spars in his right hand and his sword in his left, crossed over pointing towards his right foot. The sword is engraved with the word "SOMNUS" on the blade.
Lemnos' hair has grown out to reach about his collarbone, now worn loose. He has all the same piercings, including one in his septum, with more understated eyeliner and less visible jewellery. He is wearing a dark blue taffeta shirt with long ribbed sleeves, accessorised with a bolo-type tie that resembles a spine and thin gold chains that resemble ribs. He is wearing black leather pants and heeled leather boots. His nails are painted gold. A curve of the snake tattoo is poking up from the collar of his shirt. He is smiling.
The other three images are the same drawings separated out into individual files.

i recently decided we needed a cover for the campaign, which means it finally got an intelligible name. really proud of how this came out. it shows the first scene of the game, Somnus and Lemnos meeting Catalina on the road! Catalina belongs to @hamptoninnfreebreakfast and Lemnos belongs to @michaelburnnham
ID (copied from alt): A comic-style cover showing three people walking down an autumnal path at sunset, towards the viewer. A scratched-up Catalina is in the middle, holding her arms and shivering, looking towards Somnus. Somnus is smiling at her gently as he drapes his cloak around her shoulders. On the other side, Lemnos is smiling as he looks at them out of the corner of his eye.
The title at the top reads: "The Spark, the Scale, and the Storm" with each noun having different fonts to represent the different characters: Script for Catalina, elaborate calligraphy for Lemnos, and a basic serif for Somnus. In the top right corner is a logo resembling a crescent moon and the letters ISG. In the bottom left is the issue number #01, the URL gender binrary is for losers, and a fake barcode.

let's play "which of our characters do you think has the least complicated relationship to their parents"
Catalina (Jr.) is @hamptoninnfreebreakfast's, Mavis/Lemnos is @michaelburnnham's, Dell/Somnus is mine, and all the parents (plus Juliana) are played by the perfect @iknikblackstonevarrick!
ID (copied from alt)
1: A drawing of Catalina Fuentes del Aiza sending her daughter (Catalina Jr.) to Alejandro Stonewell with Divine Intervention. Catalina Sr. is reaching down from the top of the frame, releasing the baby from her gold-glowing, bloody hands. Her hair is falling down and hiding her eyes. Alejandro is reaching up towards the baby with an expression of concern. Baby Catalina is sleeping, swaddled and still bloody, lowered into Alejandro's arms by divine blue fire that reflects on his face.
2: A drawing of Sylva Fulmine casting Modify Memory on Mavis. Mavis is holding a newborn Juliana close to his chest under his chin, staring blankly forward with wide eyes and a slack mouth, a strand of his hair falling across his face. Sylva is cradling him from behind, one hand supporting his arm holding Juliana, the other casting Modify Memory by extracting a blue line of memory from his temple, wrapped around her finger. She has her eyes closed and brow furrowed, a tear rolling down her cheek, and her chin resting on his shoulder. Juliana is sleeping soundly. The background is staticky, with a rainbow-coloured impact crack spidering out from behind Mavis' head.
3: A drawing of a young Dell being lifted up to reach the lemon tree by his parents. Killian has hold of Dell's waist, smiling broadly as he watches him. Dell is holding onto the back of Killian's neck as he reaches up, smiling slightly, to cup lemon in his palm. Lyra has her hand on Dell's side, as she gestures with her other hand up towards the branches, speaking to him and smiling. Behind them is a bright blue sky, lush fields, and distant mountains. /end ID
