there's a part of canto vi I've been thinking about since it came out, and it doesn't actually have anything to do with Heathcliff.

She is bitter as fuck and as time goes on she's getting worse at keeping it down. Sinclair's the one who started it, by talking about how sad it is that they'd never get to see color, and Rodya starts to get a little irritated over it (yeah, sure, pity the Backstreets folk and their poor miserable little lives, privileged nest boy), but she's obviously trying not to straight up call Sinclair a privileged nest boy because she doesn't want to. But then Yi Sang and Ishmael join in on talking about how sad this place is with no color and she just can't keep her opinion down.

But that makes the atmosphere tense, and she hates a tense atmosphere, so she changes the subject and her tone, not giving a damn about how obvious it is. also, haha, ice and cold references.

And actually, this doesn't really have much evidence to support it, but I wonder if she holds a higher level of resentment for Sinclair in particular.

Canto II had some discussion about how Rodya wishes she was special (and while I think what Sonya said about her killing the tax collector just to feel special is absolute bullshit, I do also think there is some truth to her wanting to feel special), and introduced us to the concept of The Sign in a way that was vague and more like foreshadowing than actually introducing it. Then Canto III was all about The Sign, and how special Sinclair is, and since then we've had people talking about signs and stars and a new birth of the world and it's all stuff Rodya doesn't get to be part of.

I don't think she wants to hold resentment for Sinclair, and she especially never wants him to know, but going back after all this time and rereading this one interaction with him in Canto II felt pretty jarring.

the more important part of this is the way it feels like she's making a joke at Heathcliff's expense, for being poor, like even though she's also from the Backstreets she feels she's "above" it.

She absolutely does not feel this way.

On my way to find the first passage, I reread some other interesting stuff:

Once again, there's the harsh juxtaposition between casual, fun-loving Rodya, and tired, poor man's advocate Rodya. Almost everyone on the team speaks through the lens of a Nest dweller (I have to wonder if learning that Heathcliff was apparently raised in a mansion made her even more bitter), and the way she's so short with her mention of the Sweepers makes me think she's thinking about how painfully obvious it would have been to any other Backstreets dweller. And then, right after, dropping back into her casual voice, and Sinclair revealing that Rodya used the fucked up Backstreets creature to tease him...

Other obvious moments of Rodya being bitter as hell about rich people include this part of S.E.A.

and this part of her observation logs on Spiral of Contempt (actually, nearly everything in that log that isn't about the physical abnormality has to do with how much she hates how rich people look down upon the poor)

Hong Lu's canto comes after Don's, and then after his is Ryōshū's, who, based on her source material, probably served one of the most awful, contemptuous rich people the sinners have access to, and I really hope at some point here Rodya gets to snap in a big way

...hey so I wrote this entire post at 1 in the morning and then saved it to drafts because I didn't want to post something at 1 in the morning. the Timekilling Time trailer came out about two hours later, featuring both Rodya... and the long-awaited return of the Yurodiviye. so now it's past 3 in the morning for me but I'm posting it now anyway because ohohoho seeing the Yurodiviye again has given me SO much energy

- kenshi is a heavy sleeper. after moving in with johnny post-tournament he begins to unwind from his former unhealthy schedule that was supported by his yakuza lifestyle. johnny wakes up at 5 am to work out until lunch, and kenshi sleeps in til like noon or 1. johnny thinks its cute

- they either own a fuck ton of cats or ferrets. johnny seems like a ferret guy to me

- they like watching director's cuts of movies instead of actual movies because kenshi can actually understand a little more of whats happening while the directors explain certain scenes and go into depth about the composition and art direction. its a win win situation for both of them

- johnny actually reads a ton of books, but is embarrassed about it. leftovers from being a ""nerd"" in high school. kenshi thinks its adorable and he likes hearing johnny retell the book plot and express his exasperation with it unfolding as he reads

- johnny has a sweet tooth and kenshi has a more refined palette, he will try anything johnny sets in front of him though, even if he isnt much of a sweets guy

- on that same note, johnny is very good at cooking! every other night he plans a meal for them, and it's almost always a winner. lots of japanese style dishes (took some trial and error on johnny's part) because he wants to impress kenshi

- they go to red carpet events together after a couple of years of dating, but for a while they pretended (to the press, too) that kenshi was his newest bodyguard. rumors spread fast though and it ended up being a perfect time to let johnny come out publicly as bi

- kenshi's parents are actually very very supportive. i think he'd be nervous at first but his mom thinks johnny is very handsome and his father agrees its a good change for their family. kenshi has two sisters who absolutely raise hell over kenshi nabbing a sexy gaijin star and he is very embarrassed about it. much to johnny's delight

- they spend every weekend on the balcony of johnny's new loft in his jacuzzi just talking and being sappy. kenshi genuinely gets a lil upset when things come up and they miss their date nights

- everytime kenshi returns to the states after visiting home johnny makes a big scene at the airport. lunging at him, crying sobbing

- kenshi proposes first, but johnny had been nervously trying to wait for a good time to do it himself. one upped. he is still very upset about this well into their marriage as old yaois

- kenshi is the top 👍 i think we all knew this but still

- even if he doesn't need it, its sort of a ritual between them so they never stopped; johnny is still kenshi's sight dog when they go out and he doesn't feel like relying on sento.

- sento's ancestors like johnny a lot and kept being annoying about kenshi needing to get hitched already hskw7kejej

- kenshi is achillean, gay. always has been. his arrangement with suchin was. arranged. and she was his lesbian beard for a while. the two are very very close and she visits their home often. johnny is trans and bisexual, but he's only out about being bi.

- johnny tends to have a really shitty sleep cycle, light sleeper, easily thrown into insomnia, the busy street life can really fuck up his routine when hes already had a terrible day. which ends up with the both of them on the couch, talking, watching a show, kenshi with his head on johnny's shoulder. they fall asleep like that 7 times outta 10

- the older they get the sappier and grosser they get . everyone who knows them hates their gay asses . jax and sonya included

- also they both get dad bods when they get older bc of all the good eating. neither are insecure about it. its hot

- kenshi is undeniably the spoiled one. gifts, fancy dinner dates, unrelenting affection and praise. he starts believing he deserves good things, that he is loved, solely by johnny's persistence with showing him instead of telling him

- cris ends up being their friend again after a while. i just dont like the cris villainization when its contrasted with johnshi support. she had her reasons to be upset at her alcoholic, spending-addicted husband, y'all

MK 11 is near and dear to me because it's what got me back into the franchise back when it first came out. At first I loved D'Vorah but then I got attached to Hanzo and Kuai's dynamics and then when Mileena came back? Ugh! Love!

Your nerves were eating themselves alive, feeling frayed at the edges as you plucked the edges of your sleeves in your anxiety.

How were you going to tell him? Ugh!

You could have sworn it was a safe day for you, when you were with him last... week? A few weeks ago? By the Elder Gods, how far were you along? The flimsy pieces of plastic you got at the store when you ventured into town on a "girl's trip" with Sonya couldn't predict that...

Sonya patted your back, the older woman smiling in sympathy, "Hey, I know how you feel. Cassie wasn't planned at all. Trust me, kid."

"I... It's just..." Your voice trembled almost as much as your hands holding the pregnancy test did. "What if he... what if he doesn't want it? After losing his wife and son, I... what if he doesn't want this--want us anymore--because he's afraid?"

"You sound like you already made up your mind about keeping the baby..." Sonya murmured softly.

You nodded, lifting your gaze to meet hers. You were sitting in the bathroom in she and Johnny's hotel suite--they were in Japan for some film shoot--your voices echoed softly off the tile walls and floor.

"I did. Is it... bad that I want this?" You asked her, chewing your bottom lip.

"No, no. no. Listen--" Sonya took the test from your hand carefully and laid it on the counter, before taking your hands in hers. "You're perfectly capable of making a decision like this. And... On the off-chance that Hanzo doesn't want this... Johnny and I will help you out. You deserve that."

"R-Really?" You asked her as your voice began to quiver. "You... You'd do that?"

"Hell yeah I would. You're one of the best operatives we have. A good fighter, great defender of Earthrealm. And... you're going to be a great mom. I'd be a major bitch if I just kicked you out after doing this with you without helping in some way."

"Think you mean General." You sniffled, smiling at her; your eyes misty with emotion. You never expected in your military career that the Sonya Blade would be one of your biggest supporters in this kind of event in your life. But... here you were.

Sonya grinned. "Damn straight. Now... if you need to, think about it before you spring it on him. Rehearse what you have to say before telling him if you gotta, okay?"

"How did... you tell Johnny about..."

"Oh, I threw the pregnancy tests at his big fat head and said "Congrats, you knocked me up, jackass"." She chuckled nostalgically.

"You did?" You gasped.

Sonya turned to you with a grin. "Yep. Shithead started crying right on the spot."

She cuffed you on the shoulder whilst you shared a laugh.

"Go and get a good night's rest, honey. You're gonna need it."

It had been nearly two days since your talk with Sonya. You had rehearsed in your head every night since over and over and over until the wee hours of the morning what Hanzo might say, and what you in turn would say to him.

But imagining the scenarios was enitrely different than putting them into action yourself...

You and Hanzo had been walking through the Fire Gardens, watching the Sakura blossoms shake and fall loose around you in a mix of velvety pink and white. It was beautiful, and a scene you normally would find very relaxing--if it weren't for the heavy iron blanket hanging in the air--the tension was so thick you weren't surprised Hanzo picked up on it.

"Something is bothering you." He said softly, his warm palm squeezing yours as you walked.

"...yeah." You answered truthfully, squeezing back.

Hanzo tugged your hand up to his chest, bringing your slow, leisurely walk to a halt. His deep, thoughtful eyes affixed their gaze to yours, imploring you. "Speak to me, my love. Please."

You felt your heart patter in your ribcage anxiously as his request hung in the air. Long, agonizing minutes stretched on for what felt like hours.

"Hanzo..." You managed to get out, despite your tongue feeling like sandpaper.

"I'm pregnant."

And with those two simple words... it was like the universe around you came to a floundering halt.

"...What?" He whispered, dropping your hand and taking a step back.

The absence of his touch filled you with fear, made you grow cold. Were your fears right? Did Hanzo not want this? You? The baby?

"You're... pregnant?" He whispered, his voice so soft you could just barely hear it over the branches in the trees creaking in the early summer breeze.

You nod, swallowing at the stone lodged in your throat, "Yeah..."

Once more the agonizing silence swallowed you both, the yawning chasm of anxiety etching itself deeper inside of you with every second that ticked by.

As you opened your mouth to speak, Hanzo closed the gap between you, crushing your body against his in a fierce, caging hug. His arms felt like the steel jaws of a bear trap as he held you, nearly squeezing the air from your lungs as he buried his face in your hair.

The silence still stretched on, however this time, you realized, it was not because Hanzo was upset or angry--but because he was crying.

His body trembled only slightly, his muscles straining to hold you without crushing you any more than he already was.

"Hanzo?" You whispered, your hope soaring even just a tiny bit.

"I love you." He croaked, his voice so rough it made you want to cry, "I love you more than life. I lost everything I loved... Quan-Chi turned me into a soulless, undead slave... I never thought I would be so happy again, as long as I lived. And... And then I found you."

He pulled back, one of his hands cupping your cheek; his thumb sweeping away one of the fat tears that tumbled down your cheek. His eyes were glassy and full of his own tears, but he had the warmest smile you'd ever seen on anyone.

"I love you so much, my fire lily. My heart." He rasped, his lips quivering even the slightest bit.

"Have you... decided what you want to--"

"I want to keep the baby, Hanzo." You blurted, your heart pounding and your blood rushing in your ears.

He sighed, his eyes soft and loving as he looked at you. "I... I am not surprised you have already made up your mind. You have always been so sure and confident. It is one of the many reasons why I adore you."

You smiled back, "I... I want this, Hanzo. I want our baby. I want... I want you with us, too." You licked your bottom lip.

"If you want us."

Hanzo responded to you by pulling you close and kissing you until your breath left your body; his tongue twisting and dancing with yours before brushing your lips as he pulled away, leaving you almost dazed and light-headed.

"I would let Kuai Liang freeze me to a block of ice and leave me on a desolate mountain to be eaten by wild animals before I let anything tear the two of you away from me." He said resolutely, his eyes steely and adamant.

Your body sagged with relief--literally--and you found yourself supported by Hanzo's strong embrace, your legs feeling like jelly and nearly giving out beneath you. Hanzo chuckled fondly as he rubbed your back to help soothe you.

Your name left his lips like a reverent prayer--and you lifted your head to look at him, tears now freely falling down your face as you smiled gleefully, "I--I was so scared.... Af-after what happened to you before, I... I was scared..."

"That out of fear for losing the two of you, I would run? Send you away for your safety?" He chuckled, as if the very notion was ridiculously insane.

"Never. It would take armageddon for something as cowardly as that. And maybe not even then."

You sniffed and hiccup, your mind a whirl of emotions as you began to break down once again, letting Hanzo hold you as he soothed you, spoke to you, and said the most romantic things you'd only read about in books.

He was happy. He wanted you and the baby. He was excited about having a family once again.

Hanzo Hasashi would once again get to feel the joy of seeing his child enter the world, getting to hold them; hearing their sweet cries as air filled their lungs.

He would get to be a father--and hopefully husband--once again.

Read Uncle Vanya recently, and was struck by the similarity between Sonya's famous monologue at the end of the play and the church scene in "Beneath You." Specifically Spike's repetition of the phrase "Can we rest?"

SPIKE: [He walks to the crucifix at the altar.] She shall look on him with forgiveness, and everybody will forgive and love. He will be loved. [He stands before the crucifix, staring at it.] So everything's okay, right? [He embraces the crucifix, and his body begins to smoke.] Can we rest now? Buffy? Can we rest? - Buffy the Vampire Slayer 7x02 "Beneath You"

Here's Sonya's full monologue, though the most relevant part is at the end:

SONYA: What's to be done, we must go on living! [Pause] We shall go on living, Uncle Vanya. We shall live through a long, long chain of days and endless evenings; we shall patiently bear the trials fate sends us; we'll work for others, now and in our old age, without ever knowing rest, and when our time comes, we shall die submissively; and there, beyond the grave, we shall say that we have suffered, that we have wept, and have known bitterness, and God will have pity on us; and you and I, Uncle, dear Uncle, shall behold a life that is bright, beautiful, and fine. Uncle Vanya is a story of ennui and disappointment with life. The titular Vanya and his niece Sonya have spent their lives dedicated to supporting Sonya's father Serebryakov, a celebrated academic, at the expense of their own yearnings and ambitions in life. Over the course of the play, both experience disappointment in romantic love. They are also shocked by Serebryakov's intention to sell the estate they have poured their lives and funds into, without regard for the precarious position it will leave them in. Near the climax of the play, Vanya attempts and impotently fails to kill both Serebryakov and himself. Sonya and Vanya end the play where they began, toiling and romantically alone. On the surface, Sonya's monologue is a spiritually optimistic exhortation to endure and hope in the face of unrewarding drudgery. But it also highlights the bleak inability of the characters to change their circumstances on their own.

"When done well it’s not just Vanya who weeps. Through an act of will, the thing that has most afflicted them – drudgery – can be embraced. The (religious) reward is loaded with paradox: in death they will find rest, and new life. Whether or not you believe in God, it’s bleak yet the repeated phrases (“We shall rest!”, “I have faith”) have a persuasive force of uplift, tolling like a bell." - Dominic Cavendish, The Telegraph

The connections to Buffy are numerous. Like Buffy, Uncle Vanya depicts the existential dilemma: How to carry on in the face of cosmic indifference? If your lot is drudgery, how do you keep going? Throughout the show, Buffy experiences slaying as an often dreary, inescapable fate, one which she has to imbue with her own meaning instead of expecting recognition or the approval of authorities or institutions. In seasons five and six this metaphorical slog is made more human and literal as Buffy struggles to continue on with the everyday aspects of being an adult. Buffy gets her rest at the end of season five, but heaven only ends up being a false, temporary respite--she has to keep going.

Freshly ensouled, Spike in "Beneath You" is newly aware of the existential struggle. Like Vanya and Sonya, Spike has been romantically disappointed and disillusioned, and can no longer rely on it as a source of meaning. It parallels Buffy's own disillusionments when it comes to both romance and Romance (for more on this if curious, there's my unfinished romanticism series). Furthermore, now that he can make true moral choices, Spike is faced with the prospect of having to keep on making them--day after day after day--and living with the consequences. He now truly understands that, due to his actions, a chance with Buffy is impossible--that his labors, with Buffy in mind, like Vanya and Sonya with Serebryakov, cannot reward him--that his romantic and heroic narratives of himself are pathetic, broken. Now he'll have to find some other reason to keep on making choices, and it will be a thankless, unending task.

But the scene also inverts aspects of Sonya's monologue in interesting ways, making it both more and less optimistic. As a text, Buffy is not underwritten by any kind of religious or spiritual faith. Where Sonya puts God ("God will have pity on us"), Spike puts Buffy ("She shall look on him with forgiveness"), and this invocation of deity is more clearly ironic in Spike's case. He proceeds to drape himself on a cross, a Christian symbol, and the fact that it burns him emphasizes the inability of formal religion to provide the absolution or direction or reprieve he might crave. In general, the religious imagery in the church scene, the basic image of an empty church, supports the idea that this is a scene about the struggle for meaning. What does it mean to crave redemption if there's no God (or Buffy) to grant it to you?

What is left, instead, is the human ability to provide such things. On the one hand, in Buffy, one cannot have faith in even a bleak hope of spiritual reprieve. But on the other hand, there is a hope and belief in people's capacity for agency and change. As always, any given scene should ultimately be tied back to Buffy's story, especially when the scene is a dramatic centerpiece between Buffy and Spike--who, like the other major characters, has paralleled her throughout the show. I think it's very significant that this scene comes so early in the season. It restates, via Spike, Buffy's own struggle for meaning and agency within the Slayer fate, adult existence, and Romantic ideas that bound her. It re-establishes that this is one of the show's most central ideas, something to be re-explored throughout the season and resolved--in some way--by the end. (Which I think it is. There are a lot of connections between this scene and Buffy and Spike's final scene in "Chosen." Spike's sacrifice, done without stated belief in Buffy's love, suggests achievement of some internal locus of meaning. He burns with purpose, instead of on a cross. This parallels Buffy's triumph over the first and sharing the Slayer power. She no longer burns on the cross of self-hatred, or slogging away at an isolated fate.)

Of course, as ever, I don't know for sure whether or not Vanya was a direct influence or reference. I would say it's fairly likely. I wasn't able to find anything direct on the subject. All I was able to turn up was that Joss Whedon (who wrote and directed that scene) had not seen The Seagull--another Chekhov play--until ca 2007, which doesn't exactly help my thesis, lol. But I will say Vanya is probably the more famous play, and Whedon has a documented love of theater, given "Once More, With Feeling" and the Shakespeare readings hosted at his house and such. Also, Vanya on 42nd Street, a classic performance of the play, was released in 1994. The modern, stripped-down rendition of Vanya in that movie has aspects in common with Whedon's version of Much Ado About Nothing. Here's Sonya's monologue from that Vanya. The delivery of "We shall rest" is simple and restrained, closer to Spike's delivery of "Can we rest" than a more ecstatic Sonya performance.

I guess I’ll go ahead and start this one — inspired by the Mouthwashing actor AU, here’s an AU in which Road 96 is a mini series and the characters are actors portraying their characters.

- zoe brought her trombone to the audition as a joke. she and alex are friends that do choir together. her character was supposed to play guitar but she plays trombone. but she made it work and it made her stand out.

- alex took an online course on coding to get into character after he got the role. he’s academically smart in real life but he loves theatre too. he took tap as a kid and has been singing since he could babble. he steals a lot of costumes and props.

- sonya’s news voice is actually closer to her regular voice.

- jarod was an adorable local child actor way back in the day but only really starred in a couple of commercials and was never heard from again. so this role was disconcerting for people who knew him.

- stan and mitch are childhood best friends and auditioned together.

- robert is just about as scary and intense as his character is. he never laughs. he never messes up lines. if the cast messed up their lines, he’d just wait and stare. he’s taught acting workshops before though and he’s very good at it. his advice and methods stick with people he’s worked with.

- john majored in engineering and minored in acting. this was the first thing he’s ever auditioned for.

- fanny trained in using a firearm and was amazing at it but they didn’t really end up utilizing it in production.

- people who auditioned but didn’t get a lead role were casted as teens, brigades, and tyrak supporters.

༒ Cassie is one of the best yanderes to have, no questions asked.

༒ Due to her laid back nature, she’s definitely more lucid and allows her darling to roam around a bit more.

༒ She most likely found you on social media, usually a content creator for her favourite media (whether you write fanfiction or create deep-dives, it’s up to you).

༒ Since she’s so handy with tech, she was able to locate you exactly and make threats to dox you if you didn’t meet up.

༒ Sonya doesn’t really give a shit, mainly because she’s far too busy (plus she and Johnny are yanderes for each other too. Like mother, like daughter). So don’t plan to escape and beg Sonya for help because she’s just gonna drag you back and reprimand Cassie for allowing you to escape.

༒ Not a very demanding yandere, but definitely uses her status as Sonya’s daughter to her advantage. Don’t want to hug? That’s fine, but expect to be left for a few hours.

༒ Doesn’t really get angry unless you try to escape. If she catches you, she immediately knocks you out and moves you to a higher security facility and tightens your restraints.

༒ She is very chill, and very lucid. She tries talking to you about a common ground, or a shared interest. It can be easy to forget just how insane she is.

༒ Cassie loves to gossip with you. She loves explaining the context behind the gossip and encourages your engagement.

༒ While she’s not looking for marriage, she just at least wants someone to love her that’s not family.

༒ She would most likely make you wear a collar with a tracking chip in, but at least make it stylish because she may be insane, but she’s not a monster. If you tried escaping too many times however, she has no qualms burying in the chip deep into your neck.

༒ Johnny is very accepting of your relationship. Of course he’s gutted that his baby girl has a partner, but he introduces himself and even invites you to dinner with him and Sonya (kinda like a double date!). He is a very supportive dad, trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. His wife on the other hand, is the complete opposite.

“So kiddo, where did you and Cassie meet?” Johnny asks you brightly as you were forcefully sat at the dinner table. Cassie knew she didn’t have to restrain you at the table, her freakishly buff dad and military mother more than strong enough to take you down.

“We met at one of their events. They were… nearby and we decided to meet up. It was amazing,” Cassie smiled, trying to feed you some meatloaf. Johnny grinned widely.

“Aw, sounds great Cass-master! You look very happy together,” he laughed. You threw him a bitch-are-you-fucking-serious look and Sonya a very please-help-me-your-daughter-is-insane look. Sonya clears her throat.

“Cassandra, your partner has a staring problem. It’s in your best interest to discipline that out of them before it turns into something serious down the line,” she scolds.

“Ahh, lay off ‘em Sonya. It’s just young love, the kid’s obviously in their first relationship! Don’t you remember how WE were the first time we met,” Johnny grins suavely. Sonya fights back a smile.

“Ew gross, guys. At the dinner table?” Cassie cringes. You can only look on in fear and confusion.

“Anyway, may we be excused? (Y/N) and I want to play a new game I saw on social media,” Cassie asks, fingers weaving with yours. Sonya sighs.

“Yes Cassandra, you may. Don’t forget your chores later on though, and make sure your… partner are aware of the nighttime rules and how we operate at night,” she glares at you pointedly. You gulp in intimidation.

“Of course, mum. Good night, sleep well,” Cassie bids them goodnight. After giving both parents a goodnight kiss, she grabs hold of you and takes you to her room.

“Hey, catch!” She throws you a set of pyjamas as you stare at her wildly. Cassie stares back.

“Well, go on. The bathroom is there, but don’t try anything,” she turns her back to get changed too.

You wander to the bathroom and look at the pyjamas. They were soft and comfortable, with a motif of your favourite video game character. It fit perfectly, which made a shiver go down your back. You were just a gamer, how did everything transpire to this?

You totter out a few minutes later, the pyjamas hugging you tightly. Cassie looks up and smiles seeing you in the new outfit.

“Ah sick, it fits perfectly! Now, come sit down and take a controller. I haven’t played this game, but it’s multiplayer so we’re playing together,” she explained happily, patting the bed.

You obey with a shake in your step, grabbing the controller as she booted the game up. It was surprisingly easy to slip into the game; Cassie threw comments that made you laugh despite your fear. She was a great gamer, but your history proved fruitful as you ran laps around her score.

“Ah shit, it’s late. C’mon, come to bed,” Cassie says, reaching under her bed as you slowly climb into the sheets. She grabs your wrist tightly and cuffs you to the headboard, checking its tightness before kissing your neck and wrapping her arms around your waist.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

Um, everything? No, okay, hm... I would say how caring he is?

His reason for joining the war was to provide for his family who's been struggling to make ends meet. Like, fighting in the war was a big no until Lukas mentions that every soldier gets paid, meaning that he could help his parents, so he accepts to risk his life for their sake. I don't care what anyone says, I'll still find his reason to join the Deliverance to be the most selfless one out of all the villagers'. This isn't present in the English version, but at the end of his B support with Kliff, he's racking his brain to understand what's going on with Kliff and wonders (not as a joke, I should add) if he's in his rebellious phase. Whether or not his assessment is correct, he's trying very hard to understand his friend better and ahhhh...

This is only two examples, but he's just always thinking of his loved ones' well-being (or even those around him in general) and it shows in so many instances <3

Also! In the drama CD, which happens in Rigel, he's showing concern and empathy for the citizens and that moment when he saves a kid's life... If you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it! I'm a sucker for genuinely kind characters and this guy... Man. I love him so much.

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)

Oh. Haha... I'm not really interested in shipping, but I'll do my best to answer! To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of any of his popular ships? I loathe Faye x Tobin (he deserves much better imo). And I personally don't view him as gay nor do I find his relationship with Gray and Kliff to be compelling when it comes to romance. However, when it comes to platonic ships (is that how you call it?), I would say Tobin and Python! Tobin's canon class is heavily implied to be archer just like Python and... I'm a sucker for mentor/apprentice relationships, which would fit those two so well imo. An almost overly eager Tobin asking Python to please help him train because he's heard he was one of the best in the army with a Python who would rather take a nap (or something else) than train some loud and naive kid but ultimately comes to appreciate and actually get attached to Tobin (and let's be honest, who wouldn't?)? Sign me up! We also know from the drama CD that Python casually spilled at least some gossip to Tobin about Forsyth, and... I just imagine Tobin wanting to know more about these cool Deliverance veterans and Python just goes into gossip mode and Tobin just... eats it all up lol I wish those two had support conversations... Oh well... That"s what fanfiction is for, right?

2024 writing year in review

I must be insane because I didn't actually realise I wrote that much until I made this post and it kept going and going and going... really put things into perspective! My ongoing wips, as well as my German fics, didn't make the list (might be doing a separate post for the German ones), still we got 24 fics for 2024. That's two fics per month 😳 granted, some of them are a total of 250 words and others sat in my Google Docs for three years before I finally got over myself and posted them...

The Runner and the Lover: Maze Runner (E)

Every time he closed his eyes, Newt's face surfaced in the fog, always hovering on the edge of his consciousness. There was something about him that Thomas couldn’t figure out—and if Thomas had learned anything about himself in the few days spent in the Glade, it was that he was drawn to things he didn't understand, driven by an inexplicable need to fathom them. And Newt? Newt was one of those things. or: Thomas’ curiosity once again gets the better of him and he sees something he’s not supposed to see. Luckily Newt happens to be around to help him understand it.

Everyone else was so open about their queerness, but Sonya felt like an imposter. What if she wasn’t queer enough? What if she was just imagining this to fit in? But no—her feelings for Harriet were real, as was the ache that came with them. Sonya knew coming out wouldn’t suddenly make Harriet fall in love with her. That wasn’t the point. She just wanted to be herself. And what better time to come out than Pride? (written for The Maze Women 2023, prompt: Pride)

Teardrops On My Guitar: Stranger Things, (G)

It’s late, but sleep won’t come—not when it’s either nightmares of Demobats or thoughts of Steve that keep him awake. On nights like this, when Eddie feels too much, he reaches for his old acoustic guitar stashed in the back of the van. He starts picking out the same chords he’s played a hundred times since that night he came home drunk from Steve’s. His fingers find the melody on their own, a song he’s never shown anyone. The words came on a night when he’d been too high, too heartsick to keep the tears at bay. Pathetic. But heartbreak? That’s rock ’n’ roll, isn’t it? The best songs come from suffering, and Eddie’s a master at that. He doesn’t need the crumpled napkin where he first scrawled the lyrics—he knows them by heart. or: Teardrops On My Guitar but it’s a song Eddie wrote about Steve

THE LONLIEST: Maze Runner, (E)

Sometimes when someone dies, their soul may latch onto a beloved object from their life, becoming inseparably linked to it. Just as a human's existence is defined by their heartbeat, the spirit's existence becomes tied to this object. or: you know how sometimes you masturbate about your dead best friend and accidentally summon his ghost? (i read this prompt under a steddie fic and thought this might be fun for newtmas too... spoiler, this wasn't fun, this was sad)

Minho had a habit of calling him or Alby when he felt lonely, sometimes Newt too, though not since the incident. Lately, these calls had been happening more frequently, especially with Minho living alone in that big empty house, his parents almost never around. Gally always felt a mix of frustration and guilt when he thought about it—Minho acted like he had it all together, but when he was left to his own devices, things like this happened.

Just a bit about MK's gender swap of Sektor and Cyrax

Unless there is a solid reason behind such a choice, I’m not a big fan of turning established characters into a different gender. Since Cyrax and Sektor’s gender has never played any vital part in their relationship with Bi-Han, Tomas or Kuai Liang, I can accept the gender swap for now, although my final judgment will depend on how those characters will be used in the upcoming expanded story.

That said, I have some legitimate concerns about those changes. For one, if this is NRS’s way to introduce more female fighters, then I’m pretty offended. I’m still awaiting the return of Sonya (one of the original cast!). There is also Sheeva, D’Vorah, Jade, Frost, Skarlet, Khameleon (already mentioned in intro dialogues as Umgadi), Sareena (as actual character not supporting background cameo), Jataaka, Kia. There is Harumi that definitely deserves to be flashed out beyond Scorpion’s fiance/wife, not to mention a chance to introduce us to a totally new female protagonist, like Raiden’s sister. Or NRS could bring comics!Hydro as a woman (or gender-fluid hydromancer. I’m not picky, though I doubt the NRS has any intention to explore gender issues beyond characters being women or men).

And let’s not forget about Cassie Cage & Jacqui Briggs, but those two as New Generation may not fit yet into the story, which is understandable. 

I’m happy to see Sektor and Cyrax back, but there are plenty of female characters that deserve no less to be brought back into lore and I’m afraid that gender swapping Cyrax and Sektor is NRS’s way to kill two birds with one stone. Bi-Han’s supporters are important to expand the Lin Kuei vs Shirai Ryu conflict, but by being now women, their presence on the roster reduces the chance of other female characters.  

The second, more prominent concern I have is the fear that the game will rely on or imply there was romance - still ongoing or in the past - between Bi-Han or Kuai Liang with either Sektor or Cyrax. I said it countless times before that I see Sub-Zero as aromantic & asexual so any romance for him simply doesn’t work for me, but that is actually beside the point.

My point is, if the major addition to the relationship between Lin Kuei characters will be Sektor and/or Cyrax having romantic feelings for any of the brothers and for that addition NRS needed to gender swap them into women I WILL BE FURIOUS. Not for the romance itself, but because Sektor and Cyrax as men could have the same feelings and their gender should not play any role in that. Homosexual and/or bisexual men should be part of MK lore no less than heterosexual characters. And I feel lately that the Mortal Kombat franchise likes to erase a lot of previously established diversity. Homosexual Kung Jin was playable only in MKX (2015) and just referred here or there since then. Previous timelines Mileena showed interest (or sometimes was just sexually creepy?) toward men and women alike, now she is only interested in Tanya. On one hand, cool, an established lesbian woman. On another the bisexual vibe is kicked out of the window - or at least this is my impression. Johnny may be seen as bisexual man, but how intentional that was on the NRS’ part or just came out naturally as there is no female character in the group of Liu Kang’s Earthrealm Champions for him to interact with, I’m not sure. 

My fear is that NRS is just a coward that would rather gender-swap male characters to present them and their relationship as heterosexual than just go with them as they are. MK1 has already the token homosexual pair (Tanya & Mileena) to balance Liu Kang/Kitana,  Sindel/Jerrod and background Johnny’s ex-marriage or Kenshi/Suchin. So if female Cyrax and Sektor’s purpose is to either avoid homosexual implication or to explore the relationship of  Lin Kuei characters through some romantic bullshit, I will be furious. But if studio’s choice to gender swap Sektor and Cyrax will change literally nothing about what we already knew from previous timelines then WHAT WAS THE POINT OF ALL OF THIS?

Like I said, my final judgment about NRS’s choice for female Cyrax and Sektor will be based on story mode alone. For now, I’m pretty much indifferent, as their gender has never affected their relationship with Bi-Han before and so far the only complaint I have is, the visually-wise impression that female Cyrax and Sektor seem to look thinner than rest of female characters? But that may be just the armor playing a trick on my eyes.

(I lied. I have a second complaint, their armor should be more bulky, and better covering their body/gender. This seems like a wasted opportunity to have a cool reveal that yes, under the armor there are two kick-ass awesome women).

So, female Cyrax and Sektor for now does not change anything for me, but I do remain suspicious about the reasoning of NRS for gender swap.

Little Comforts

Pairing: Sonya × Aris

Universe: Movies

Settling down in the Safe Haven wasn't necessarily easy for any of the surviving kids from WCKD. This was especially true for Sonya, a subject and survivor from Maze B, who, on top of being subjected to the Maze, was kidnapped and shipped around for six months in horrible conditions. Yes, many others went through the same things that she did, that was undeniable.

But after running on adrenaline for so long and always being on the move, when they were finally able to breathe, Sonya crashed- hard.

It was bad enough that she could barely move from her cot, but the fact that all of her friends seemed so much better than her and were seemingly coping better than she was only worsened her state. Her slow-returning memories were giving her little comfort, especially when she finally remembered her now-dead big brother.

Harriet was always a comforting presence, but she was also stoic, which made Sonya feel even more self-conscious. Harriet pushed her to get up and try to see if the fresh air and sunlight would make her feel better, quoting how, in the Maze, they would go hang out outside when things got tough to catch a breather and relax. Sonya understood and appreciated her push, but she wasn't sure she could find it in herself to do so.

One person, however, didn't push or prod or try to drag her out of her hole.

Aris.

Sonya hadn't known Aris for very long before they escaped the Maze, but she'd gotten to know him a lot better when she was kidnapped by WCKD, as he'd been kidnapped as well. When the other group went off to find Minho after rescuing the two, they'd gotten time to connect some more, without the watchful eye of WCKD over them.

He'd grown taller in the past few months, though nothing too noticeable. Sonya just realized she was looking up at him more now. But Aris was the one person who took her crash in stride. Hell, he was the only one who even bothered to stay and have a chat with her.

Instead of telling her about all the ways that she could possibly make herself feel better, he sat with her and talked to her about literally anything. Gossip, memories of WCKD, memories of the Maze. He met her at her level, as opposed to trying to bring her up to his.

Sonya could not express with words how much his support meant to her. She was attributing most of her slow healing to Aris. He helped her so much that she started going outside and interacting with people again.

She spent a lot of time with Aris throughout the day, enough so that her friends were commenting on it. Sonya hadn't even realized how she subconsciously sought him out in groups, or just in general. He never seemed to mind, so she didn't think anything of it.

Sonya began to push through the days in order to make it to the little beach-meetings she shared with Aris once or twice a week. She was re-integrated into the society they'd built and finally found herself again. She didn't feel like holing up and being alone all day anymore, no longer cried herself to sleep from the weight of her trauma.

But that didn't mean she and Aris fell out.

No, if anything, they got closer. And their meetings felt more personal, more private. Less like meetings for talking about stress to blow off steam, more like hang-outs to be with the other.

The development of laced hands, affectionate smiles, giggles that belong only in that moment. Falling asleep on the beach, found snuggled up against each other. The eventual, tentative kisses, as if one wrong move means the other disappears.

Sonya didn't know where they were going, and honestly, she didn't really care right now. All she knew was that Aris was the person she found the most comfort in.

And that was enough.

a character that i used to love/like, but now do not: I tolerated Michael my first watch-through, and I still don't think he's the worst exactly, but I have come to be extremely annoyed by him upon rewatches.

a ship that i used to love/like, but now do not: When the idea of Owen/Alex was introduced, I was intrigued, however it was handled badly and Salex (Sean/Alex) broke my heart so I couldn't support it in the end.

my ultimate favorite character™: Ari and Nikita are tied.

prettiest character: There are way too many pretty people in this series 😂 For the ladies: Nikita and Alex; for the gentlemen: Ari, Ryan and Owen (Sean is also handsome just not really my type, so honorable mention for Alex's sake).

my most hated character: AMANDA 😑

my NOTP: Ari/Amanda, Mikita, and to a lesser extent Olex.

favorite episode: I'm really partial to episodes involving Ari, obviously, and I'd say that "Phoenix" harbors a special spot because it introduces him. I also love "The Next Seduction" because of *that* scene (if you know you know) and his redemption arc in season 3 had some fantastic scenes and moments.

saddest death: Ari's. Full stop. Also Ryan's.

favorite season: Season One. Even though I forever will think getting Mikita together when they did was a huge mistake overall.

least favorite season: Season Four. While they did a commendable job of wrapping up everything in six episodes, it was still a disappointment.

༒ She’s just so chill

༒ She’s one of the yandere’s who wouldn’t need to kidnap you, since you would be so attracted to her that she wouldn’t have the need to.

༒ That isn’t to say that she can’t be scary.

༒ Jacqui likes kickboxing and training with her darling, guising it as “training” when in reality she just likes being close to you.

༒ She is a very protective yandere. Jacqui keeps you as near to her as possible, without letting on her intentions.

༒ Due to her family history, she can be irritable when you’re not with her. She often gets nightmares of the fateful day her father got turned into Quan Chi’s puppet, but often your face melts into his.

༒ This causes her to get anxious and run to your room. She’ll just sit next to you and watch you sleep, occasionally petting your hair as she catches her breath.

༒ She is ultimately a very lucid yandere, opting to use intimidation to keep you near her. She just wants you to love her of your own accord, without the possibility of Stockholm syndrome. She loves you, and wants your affections to be as whole as yours.

༒ Jacqui would love for you to meet her family. After Jax’s revival, she wants you to meet the man she loves the most. He is super supportive of you both (but he does threaten to break your arms if you hurt his baby girl). Y’know, typical dad stuff.

༒ She’s a bit stiff with affection. Since she works with Cassia and Sonya, being in the military makes it difficult for her to express her affection. After a while though, she warms up and lets you hug her and give her kisses. Try that in public though and she’ll smack you up the head.

༒ Her father is so happy that she has someone to take care of his daughter. He enjoys hanging out with you one on one, drinking beers and laughing. He is thrilled when you ask about his war stories, chest puffing with pride when you admit that you want to be as high as rank as him one day.

༒ Her father eventually ends up as a platonic yandere for you too. Jax sees you as his own flesh and blood, and even starts referring to you as his kid in law despite you not saying anything about marriage to Jacqui.

༒ Holidays are spent at the Briggs family home, the three of you laughing and having fun as Jacqui and Jax smile in connected intentions.
