Mr Everdeen's name theories
Ok so I listed all the options I had in mind for Mr Everdeen’s name, including the theories about him being related or close to the Covey. ✨Feel free to add more✨.
Ballad names :
Although I love the ballads of Joe Hill, Tom Joad, Michael Collins and James Larkin etc I don’t think this is what she has chosen (cause yes she has decided his name and she better gives it to us sorry that sounds like a threat) because it’s not really related to his story.
Annarchie from Annarchie Gordon : I saw someone on Tumblr or Reddit talking about this scottish ballad and how they could see Mr Everdeen being named after this song for it’s about a women, Jeannie, who “is to be married off to the wealthy Lord Saltoun, but she is in love with Annachie”. Contrary to Katniss’ parents who end up together, Jeannie marries the Lord. So she, and Annarchie, both die of a broken heart. Similar to Mrs Everdeen falling into depression when Mr Everdeen literally dies.
Also, if he’s named Annarchie, wouldn't it be funny if Mrs Everdeen’s name was Peggy (because of the ballad of Peggy Gordon).
Jack from Black Jack Davey : When I heard this song and its differents versions like “G**** Davey”, “The G**** Laddie” or “The G**** Rover”, I thought of Mr and Mrs Everdeen. I mean, look at the lyrics :
He whistled and he sang 'til the green woods rang And he won the heart of a lady
It is also a ballad about a girl from a wealthy family falling in love with a man she’s not supposed to marry. There are multiple versions and in some, while she left her husband (and sometimes baby) behind her to go with her lover, this man leaves her. But in most of the versions I listened to they live happily together. Plus, in this ballad, the man sings and he’s a traveler, like the Covey.
And in “Black Jack Davey” well, there’s also a color, so…….
Robin from Robin Hood : Many people have said this was one of their guesses, due to the obvious connection with the woods and the use of bow and arrows, but also because Robin is kind of a rebel. Just like Mr Everdeen. It’s also a name connected to nature since Robin is a type of bird. And god do I love birds images in THG.
Ira from Ira Hayes : He was indigenous (an Akimel O'odham American) and was a marine who fought during the Pacific War. He suffered from PTSD and alcoholism. It’s not in relation to what happened to Mr Everdeen who wasn’t even born during the Rebellion and died in a mine accident, but Ira is also a common name in the South and it’s my hc that the Everdeens are part native.
Covey name : ballad + color
If Mr Everdeen not only has a ballad name but also a color, maybe Black for “Black Jack” as stated before. But others could be :
Ash (for Gray as in Lucy Gray but also for the fire symbolism).
Russet (color of fall “often associated with sorrow or grave seriousness”).
Cornsilk (if he is Maude Ivory’s son or grandson, it could make sense to have another shade of an off-white color. Specially in contrast to Snow’s obsession for his white roses).
Crimson (deep red, similar to Carmine so perhaps a link with Clerk Carmine Clade. And numerous birds have that name although not in America).
Copper (reddish brown, there's a venomous snake named “the eastern copperhead” in eastern North America that can be found in Appalachia).
Or types of green like Erin (also an irish name), Myrtle (a dark green + Myrtus is a kind of flower). And obviously, Evergreen. I remember thinking it was a funny coincidence that Katniss’ favorite color was green when her family name was so close to Evergreen. Then TBOSAS came out and I thought maybe the Everdeens are descendants of the Covey but they have changed their names or were forced to.
There’s Canary and Olive but too obvious imo. Maybe Beaver (color + animal so linked to nature and hunt), Chestnut (named after the nut of chestnut tree so nature and food), Fallow (a pale brown associated with fallow deer) or Fawn.
I saw Claret (color of red wine) and the word has a nice ring so it stuck with me, even though I don’t see why specifically that could be a covey name for him.
Traditional / nature names :
I'd like to believe that naming Katniss and Prim after plants was a personnal thing for Mr and Mrs Everdeen, in relation to how they met. But since others in 12, especially in the Seam, have nature names perhaps Mr Everdeen has one too.
Ira / Hayes : traditional names in the South, also a link to Ira Hayes.
Fawn : traditional appalachian name (and linked to the animal).
Lafe : traditional name in the South, means “heir, descendant ; faith” (could refer to Lucy Gray and the Covey’s legacy, that Mr Everdeen passed down to Katniss).
Merle : traditional southern name and also a bird.
Earl : traditional southern name which means "nobleman” or “warrior.”
Tanner : traditional southern name which comes from the profession of tanner as someone who made leather from animal hides. The name “is often associated with hard work and practicality, reflecting the practical and hands-on nature”.
Chayton : originates from the Lakota word čhetáŋ, meaning “falcon” or “hawk.”
Willow : traditional appalachian name and also linked to nature (now imagine toast babies named after him)
Harper : traditional appalachian name and a link to the musical instrument.
Yarrow : traditional appalachian name, meaning “rough stream” but also associated with a wild herb and flowering plant.
Hunter / Archer / Forest (but let’s hope it’s not hahahahah)
Knowing that if it's a traditional name, she probably changed it a bit.

The capital leaving Haymitch with that scar feels so personal because we know from Katniss that they can heal the majority of scars, even old ones, and erase them from the skin. It feels like a permanent reminder that his life is in Snow’s hands
It also makes me wonder if perhaps the Capital could have saved Peeta’s leg, given that we don’t know to what extent their medicine has progressed, but that they chose not to as another personal reminder
And just how many victors have been left scarred or disabled for that very reason?

why do people seem to think that if lenore dove is a covey child that means katniss cannot be a grandchild? Four members of the Covey are alive at the end of TBOSAS. They could all have children and families of their own by the time of SotR (though it is less likely Barb Azure had children since she is queer canonically but not impossible.)
The kids might not even been super familiar with one another since the new head peacekeeper allowed them playing at the Hob. (Only Barb Azure and Maude Ivory are blood related at this point, I think, with Lucy Gray and Billy Taupe dead.) I assume the two boys at least had to go to work in the mines. Their lives might have been VERY different after Lucy Gray disappeared.
Based on nothing I am going to say Maude Ivory is Katniss and Prim's grandmother and Clerk Carmine is Lenore Dove's father...
Oh wait there is that speculation that Clerk Carmine is the "lone fiddler" who plays at Annie and Finnick's wedding. Now I've made myself sad thinking about why he is alone.

Hi! I rushed to reread the OG Hunger Games, and Sunrise on the reaping when I saw you posted your video. I cried with you, everything was too fresh 😭
I wanted to hear more of your thoughts on your comment that we never find out who Plutarch knows in 12 (I did not catch that detail). I feel like he's a interesting character to explore morality through. He's the grayest of the "good guys", without being an outright villain like Coin. But also, he lived a life of luxury, why did he decide to rebel? And he was quite dedicated to the cause it seems. Do you think Susanne would write another prequel about him? 👀
i am still so curious about who his friend in 12 might be. i was thinking tam amber, but that may be too on the nose.
i think if she were to write another book, it would be about plutarch, or he’d at least play a major role in the story. my theory is that it would somehow tie in tigris and how he knows her and her involvement in the rebellion (but maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part because i still have so many questions about her)

I’ve been on a 2 day tbosas audiobook binge and all I can think about is these two quotes:
“The shirt. The shirt. His mind could fixate on a problem like that - anything, really - and not let go. As if controlling one element of his world would keep him from ruin. It was a bad habit that blinded him to other things that could harm him. A tendency toward obsession was hardwired into his brain and would likely be his undoing if he couldn't learn to outsmart it.” (Tbosas ch 1)
“My failure," says Snow, "was being so slow to grasp Coin's plan…After all, it was Thirteen that started the rebellion that led to the Dark Days, and then abandoned the rest of the districts when the tide turned against it. But I wasn't watching Coin. I was watching you, Mockingjay. And you were watching me. I'm afraid we have both been played for fools.” (Mockingjay ch 25)
Thinking about how his loss of wealth and status was because of D13 but he failed to grasp Coin’s plan. Thinking about how immediately and severely Haymitch and D12 were punished after the 50th. Thinking about how his obsession with D12 was inevitably his undoing.
And I’m REALLY thinking there’s a reason we needed to get Snow’s story before we could get Haymitch’s.

so for sotr i can’t imagine it’ll be just the games, because suzanne said she wanted to explore the propaganda and such so i’d imagine it needs to focus pretty heavily on the aftermath? personally i am hoping the games are done by the halfway mark bc like you said, we already know the broad strokes of the arena. i want to see the fallout! what did haymitch say the arena/his post games interview that brought down THAT punishment? why the lore drop about him and mrs everdeen and the old head peacekeeper? why does he know where there arent bugs in the district 11 justice building of all places? i know i will eat whatever ms collins feeds me but i so hope we get to explore more of the aftermath of the games than the games themselves
I agree with you on everything!! I read a Reddit comment today speculating about Mrs. Everdeen’s parents and how Katniss refers to them in the past tense, “they ran the apothecary shop” etc and how therefore they are probably long dead and it’s not just a situation where they estranged their daughter for marrying a man from the Seam. I wonder if the retaliation for whatever Haymitch does extends beyond just his family being killed to punishment for all of District 12 that resulted in many deaths? Would definitely be in line with his comments in Catching Fire about the old head peacekeeper and Mrs Everdeen. Or maybe Haymitch’s family is killed in some of staged “accident” that also killed others in town.
I know it is unlikely to extend this far into the future but I would really like to see Haymitch’s first/early years of being a mentor. Did he have hope in the beginning? Did he start drowning himself in alcohol right after the games/his family’s death, or was that something built up from prolonged time in the Capitol and the strain of mentoring? It would be so interesting to see his relationships forming with other victors like Chaff and however he gets drawn into the rebellion as well.
I had doubts/fears about TBOSAS before that came out and then I ended up greatly enjoying it and appreciating what it added to the story and fleshed out the world, so as you said, I really do trust Ms. Collins wholeheartedly now. Reading the trilogy again I’m also amazed by just how much plot and character she packs into a pretty average length book. She has a gift I could only dream of in my writing…being succinct 😭 lmao. But it also means every line is SO intentional, and I am snapping up all the little throwaway lines about/from Haymitch like a hawk. What does it all meannnn!!

Damn I just typed way too much about the SotR cover.
Welp I want to make it quick for the protagonist post.
I HAVE SO MANY THINGS TO SAY BUT NOT ENOUGH TIME OR ENERGY TO WRITE THEM.
Okay so the main contenders in my opinion are:
Haymitch, Plutarch.
Maysilee.
Honestly there’s more but to divide the sections a little bit let’s just play a game of “don’t question it.” Here are (nearly?) all the possible options for the protagonist(s):
•Mr Everdeen
•Mrs Everdeen
•Mrs Undersee / Maysilee’s twin.
•Haymitch’s Girl. (I’d love it to be her I’m like her biggest fan)
•Haymitch’s brother (or mother)
•Coin or a character from D13.
•Caesar Flickerman. Honestly he would’ve been higher but I wanted to write out the order based on vibes not probability.
•Either of Peeta’s parents.
•Hazelle. Or Gale’s dad (I HIGHLY doubt this, even more so than anyone else lmao)
•An unknown character from 12.
•Another victor. I wanted to go in more detail about the options within this one but for the sake of not overdoing this semi-rushed post, I’ll leave it at that. There’s a LOT of options within this bullet point though.
•A rebel (from the capital, from the districts. Perhaps even the person who started orchestrating the rebellion…? If that isn’t Plutarch lmao)
•Snow or someone related to Snow, like Tigris or his wife. I doubt this, but a Snow sequel could make sense.
•An unknown/new character. From the districts, the capitol, anywhere.
Or we could get a curveball and have it be from the perspective of someone outside of panem-
Just kidding. I don’t think anyone thinks or wants that lmao.

mockingjay pin in sotr
If we see Maysilee with her mockingjay pin, it's either gonna be her wearing it on reaping day, during the interview (though I doubt the stylists would let her) or in the arena. And/or perhaps, after Haymitch wins, her family will want to give it to him as thanks but he'll refuse.
I know Katniss didn't mention the pin on Maysilee in CF but that's probably because she didn't notice. The footage of theses games was focused on the victor, aka Haymitch, plus, my bet is that (as we may see in SOTR) some of it was modified/censored.
Now without having red the book, it's difficult to talk about the movie adaptation. But I believe that since Madge will be absent, a scene with Maysilee wearing the pin pre/during the games won't be enough cause we'll need to understand how it came in the hands of a seller at the Hob.
So maybe a scene where Maysilee's sister gives the canary to Mrs Everdeen (that is if they make it to the movie) and sells/gives away the pin to someone else ? But it has to be someone she cares about and not some random stranger, cause it has sentimental (and "real") value. And I can't see this someone being Haymitch cause he doesn't need to sell it for money. Keeping it hidden and never daring to look at it ? Yes. But giving it away ? Idk.
But maybe it's the direction they'll take after all.
Or maybe, something very similar where Maysilee's family gives/sells her stuff. We see Mrs Everdeen taking the canary or not (please yes) and there's a shot on the mockingjay pin that no one - for now - is taking OR we actually see someone reaching for it. And we'll just have to guess it was pass down from hands to hands until Katniss.
And since we're following Haymitch's story, if we get to see that it's because he will be witnessing these things.

How do we all feel about the possibility that his (1) plan actually worked Annie's year and the damn breaking wasn't the Gamemakers' intention, but they just said that to cover up for the unexpected flooding?
Cus Annie won the 70th games when the kid Beetee's wife was pregnant with during the 50th would finally be safely 19 yrs old...
there is something just so funny about the fact that beetee had one (1) plan to disrupt the games and then it didn't work. but 25 years later he rocks up to the hunger games like "okay. so. we have to break the arena. but THIS TIME it's gonna WORK." and then it did. icon.

the reused trackers in sunrise on the reaping
in sotr it is revealed the capitol reuses the tributes' trackers.
“What happens if we win? Do they take it out?” asks Wyatt.
“We collect all of them from the tributes, dead or alive,” says the woman. “They’re reusable. Of course, this year we needed twenty-four extra.”
i have seen some people speculate this is a cruelty on the capitol's part. it could be fatal to reuse trackers inserted under the skin and removed from dead bodies.
i actually think the reused trackers show a weakness on the capitol's part. there is this myth the capitol has infinite resources and funds, that they are calculating in every way. but what we see throughout sotr is this is not fully the case. the capitol is cruel yes, but they aren't as put together as they want everyone to believe.
the capitol hoards the resources produced by the districts. they live beyond their means, lavishly. this however doesn't mean there is infinite resources. what brought together panem was a series of events, one being resource scarcity!
instead the leaders of the capitol keep up the illusion to the citizens of the capitol that they have plenty of resources, never ending. to create a sense of security. the people in the capitol feel comfortable and safe. they never worry about anything. they don't have to. everything they could even need simply appears with out the signs of labor with out even lifting their finger!
with the trackers, and other things, we see that they really do not have enough. there are places they must cut corners. yes, they spend and waste so many resources on the games, but they save where they can. why make more trackers when you can just reuse the same 24 every year?

I got spoiled for a SotR thing. I am weak. I need to stay offline.
But I have been thinking. With it being the 50th games and we know the winners from 1-10 are unknown/missing in action whereas 11th games and after they were closely monitored, then it’s not possible for all 48 kids to have a mentor because there are only 38 possible (and some may have died). I mean maybe they could scrounge up some of the 1-9 winners but I imagine if they weren’t given money then holding down a district job would’ve been tough with PTSD, so I must assume Mags is functionally #1.)
But the time we get to 74 it is odd that Peeta and Katniss to share one. But mathematically the past, they had to share.

Oh my gosh if this is true I need to post all my drafts relating to the cover before it’s released 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
I was speculating around November/December. But October makes a lot of sense as well. Plus it’s basically confirmed for the German cover? So!
brainrot, but I'm pretty sure we are going to get the Sunrise on the Reaping cover for the US version October 17th.
Because the German version will be revealed on October 18th, 14 o'clock—8 AM for New York—and I think Scholastic wants to have the US cover be the first we see.
They also happen to be at New York Comic Con, which just so happens to start October 17th, and which just so happens to be the place they did a cover reveal for tbosas.

(Images in order: Scholastic booth mentioned on this year's nycc website; announced cover reveal for the German version at Frankfurt book fair on Oct 18, 2 PM GMT; tbosas book cover revealed at 2019 nycc)

Countdown to Sunrise on the Reaping (SotR) book release 🔥
What's the burning questions about Haymitch you hope is answered in this book?
What are your predictions about Katniss' family or ancestry in SotR?
Were you shocked about Haymitch's life story in the chapter preview that's been released?
Any other thought about SotR?
Thank you.
@curiousnonny
the better question is what DON'T I want answered about Haymitch?? man i wanna know it ALL. That said I am obviously most looking forward to finding out what he did that in or after the Games that the Capitol covered up, what prompted the Capitol to kill his family, how those killings were weaponized as threats against...the other victors? District 12? All of Panem? and kind of just the whole propaganda machine that surrounds the Quell after the fact (Katniss mentions they don't even teach about his Games in District 12 schools!! Haymitch was the only living District 12 victor and they don't talk about his victory in his own district!!! ahhhhh). Also I am really excited to learn more on how much of his actions in the Games are deliberately rebellious (I could kind of see young Haymitch having a mindset a lot like Gale's tbh) or was it more spur of the moment like Katniss? Also I am of course really excited to meet Lenore Dove...i love the way Suzanne writes her romantic subplots so I have high hopes for them!
Mostly I agree with the theory that Katniss' father is either covey or covey adjacent. Maybe he's somehow related to Lenore Dove (who imo is almost certainly covey), like they could be cousins or something? Since we know from the snippet that Haymitch goes into the woods, I'm wondering if maybe he and Katniss' dad are friends or if they'll be any scenes that include the both of them. I think that could be fun. Perhaps Katniss parents bonded during the Games because they both had a friend in there? Also predicting that Katniss grandparents (mother's side) are killed somehow during this time period.
My jaw was on the floor with the whole birthday on reaping day reveal LMAO. Everything else from that preview was largely stuff we already know from the original trilogy, but I loved how much the Katniss-Haymitch parallels were paralleling and I can't wait to uncover more of that 🫶
