We’re running a new experiment that changes the header on posts to reduce the redundancy of avatars in reblogs, save some vertical space by moving recommendation labels around, afford more room for badges, and more! On desktop web, it also removes the floating avatars and makes posts full width with the sidebars. If you have feedback about this change, please send it in to Support using the “Feedback” category.

We’ve removed the blog carousel at the top of the Blog Subs dashboard tab (for those who have it enabled), as it was causing the load time to worsen dramatically. (You can enable this tab in your Tumblr Labs settings, or via the new experimental dashboard tab configuration button if you have it.)

Fixed an issue in recommended and related tag card carousels that would show a “Follow” button when you’re already following that tag.

We were having some issues with SoundCloud embeds not working in posts, but it’s cleared up now.

In mobile phone browsers, the “Source” and “Submitted by” text at the bottom of posts is now correctly aligned on the left (it was a few pixels off).

Also in mobile phone browsers, we’ve cleaned up a visual glitch on trending tag pages that was causing the “Trending now” label to be on the same line as the tag itself.

“Carbon neutral” Bitcoin operation founded by coal plant operator wasn’t actually carbon neutral

I'm at DEFCON! TODAY (Aug 9), I'm emceeing the EFF POKER TOURNAMENT (noon at the Horseshoe Poker Room), and appearing on the BRICKED AND ABANDONED panel (5PM, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01). TOMORROW (Aug 10), I'm giving a keynote called "DISENSHITTIFY OR DIE! How hackers can seize the means of computation and build a new, good internet that is hardened against our asshole bosses' insatiable horniness for enshittification" (noon, LVCC - L1 - HW1–11–01).

Water is wet, and a Bitcoin thing turned out to be a scam. Why am I writing about a Bitcoin scam? Two reasons:

I. It's also a climate scam; and

II. The journalists who uncovered it have a unique business-model.

Here's the scam. Terawulf is a publicly traded company that purports to do "green" Bitcoin mining. Now, cryptocurrency mining is one of the most gratuitously climate-wrecking activities we have. Mining Bitcoin is an environmental crime on par with opening a brunch place that only serves Spotted Owl omelets.

Despite Terawulf's claim to be carbon-neutral, it is not. It plugs into the NY power grid and sucks up farcical quantities of energy produced from fossil fuel sources. The company doesn't buy even buy carbon credits (carbon credits are a scam, but buying carbon credits would at least make its crimes nonfraudulent):

Terawulf is a scam from top to bottom. Its NY state permit application promises not to pursue cryptocurrency mining, a thing it was actively trumpeting its plan to do even as it filed that application.

The company has its roots in the very dirtiest kinds of Bitcoin mining. Its top execs (including CEO Paul Prager) were involved with Beowulf Energy LLC, a company that convinced struggling coal plant operators to keep operating in order to fuel Bitcoin mining rigs. There's evidence that top execs at Terawulf, the "carbon neutral" Bitcoin mining op, are also running Beowulf, the coal Bitcoin mining op.

This is a very profitable scam. Prager owns a "small village" in Maryland, with more that 20 structures, including a private gas station for his Ferrari collection (he also has a five bedroom place on Fifth Ave). More than a third of Terawulf's earnings were funneled to Beowulf. Terawulf also leases its facilities from a company that Prager owns 99.9% of, and Terawulf has *showered * that company in its stock.

So here we are, a typical Bitcoin story: scammers lying like hell, wrecking the planet, and getting indecently rich. The guy's even spending his money like an asshole. So far, so normal.

But what's interesting about this story is where it came from: Hunterbrook Media, an investigative news outlet that's funded by a short seller – an investment firm that makes bets that companies' share prices are likely to decline. They stand to make a ton of money if the journalists they hire find fraud in the companies they investigate:

Top: the 2020 Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. enters sleep mode when it is left idle for three minutes while not being plugged in. Depending on the time of the day, before entering sleep mode, the system briefly shows various artwork, mostly depicting Mario, Luigi and the enemies resting. Between noon and 1 PM, the artwork shown is one of Mario and Luigi having lunch on top of the mushrooms from World 4-3.

Bottom: after the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, concept artwork for the movie was published, which included the drawing that the sleep screen above was based on. While the Game & Watch predates the movie, the movie has been in production since 2018. This creates a curious case of one product being released using another product's concept art before the product for which the concept art was made in the first place could be released itself.

The first major solo museum presentation of fourth-generation Navajo weaver Melissa Cody (b. 1983, No Water Mesa, Arizona) spans the last decade of her practice, showcasing over 30 weavings and a major new work produced for the exhibition. Using long-established weaving techniques and incorporating new digital technologies, Cody assembles and reimagines popular patterns into sophisticated geometric overlays, incorporating atypical dyes and fibers. Her tapestries carry forward the methods of Navajo Germantown weaving, which developed out of the wool and blankets that were made in Germantown, Pennsylvania and supplied by the US government to the Navajo people during the forced expulsion from their territories in the mid-1800s. During this period, the rationed blankets were taken apart and the yarn was used to make new textiles, a practice of reclamation which became the source of the movement. While acknowledging this history and working on a traditional Navajo loom, Cody’s masterful works exercise experimental palettes and patterns that animate through reinvention, reframing traditions as cycles of evolution. Melissa Cody is a Navajo/Diné textile artist and enrolled member of the Navajo/Diné nation. Cody grew up on a Navajo Reservation in Leupp, Arizona and received a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts and Museum Studies from Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe. Her work has been featured in The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia (2022); Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, AR (2021); National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (2019–2020); Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff (2019); SITE Santa Fe (2018–19); Ingham Chapman Gallery, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque (2018); Navajo Nation Museum, Window Rock (2018); and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe (2017–18). Food Bank Fundraiser

Hi everyone!

First of all, I want to say thanks to everyone who's been leaving such nice tags/comments on stuff I've posted! It's been really encouraging (o^▽^o)

Anyway, I think we all know it's very dark days on the economic front for many of us. So as such, I'd like to help raise some funds for Food Banks Canada! In exchange for you making a donation to the food bank, I will draw a character suggestion!

I know this is not really the sort of thing I normally do or post here but... many folks are struggling to put food on the table right now, and the food bank is a source of support for many and provides an absolute necessity. I've seen many people struggling in my own city, and food security has become an even bigger issue than it already was in the last couple of years with the food bank struggling to keep up with demand. Of course, food security is an issue across the whole country that's putting a huge strain on food banks, with nearly 5% of the entire population making use of food banks monthly, and 23% of the population reporting food insecurity (CBC, 2024; Global News, 2024). Unsurprisingly, those who are already most disadvantaged suffer the effects of food scarcity even more (Statistics Canada, 2023). To make matters more desperate, Canada's food bank system is on the brink of collapse (CTV News, 2024).

I know this isn't going to something big enough to change the world or anything, but being able to make even a small impact for individual people is important too!

Of course, I'm sure people aren't just in it for a reward, but rewards make things all the sweeter, right?

For those who want to contribute, I'll take a character suggestion and add it to a poll (depending on the number of contributors, it may be split up into multiple polls), and then I'll draw as many as I can from top to bottom ranking! If you contribute, please send me a DM with your donation receipt and your character idea! They won't necessarily all be drawn in the same style, and they'll be done according to how much time I've got. (I know that commissions are probably the biggest incentive, but realistically, I struggle to get them done quickly and they're probably not that affordable to everyone)

If you prefer SFW or NSFW, you can let me know (But NSFW will be posted to Cohost). If you make a bigger contribution, I'll reach out to you and ask if you wanna see more specifics/details in your piece. How's that for sweetening the pie? :3

Explanation: On October 14 it was hard to capture a full view of Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. Taken after the comet's closest approach to our fair planet, this evening skyview almost does though. With two telephoto frames combined, the image stretches about 26 degrees across the sky from top to bottom, looking west from Gates Pass, Tucson, Arizona. Comet watchers that night could even identify globular star cluster M5 and the faint apparition of periodic comet 13P Olbers near the long the path of Tsuchinshan-ATLAS's whitish dust tail above the bright comet's coma. Due to perspective as the Earth is crossing the comet's orbital plane, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS also has a pronounced antitail. The antitail is composed of dust previously released and fanning out away from the Sun along the comet's orbit, visible as a needle-like extension below the bright coma toward the rugged western horizon.

Hello, thank you very much and that is not a stupid question at all! I had been meaning to devote a post to this matter.

In July 2023 I was baffled to all of a sudden see a new version of Battersby's Fitzjames biography, entitled James Fitzjames: Commander of HMS Erebus. For those who don't know: Battersby died in 2016, so he is not around to publish new books. His family members who I'm in touch with had not been informed that this new edition was coming out. When I contacted the publisher, they said that the only difference between the two is that one is hardback and the other paperback, and that the contents are exactly the same. The hardback was out of print and had now been substituted by a paperback edition. Reasonable. But I was immediately annoyed by the change of title because 1) Why change the title that Battersby himself chose? and 2) It's incorrect; Fitzjames was the CAPTAIN of Erebus. Plus I'm annoyed by that colourised picture on the cover: his hair was not brown!

Believing the publisher that the contents remained unchanged, I was not planning on reading the paperback. Then, somebody on Tumblr sent me a message saying that they encountered a confusing change in the paperback.

While the first few paperback chapters are unchanged from the 2010 hardback edition, giving Battersby's misguided theory that Fitzjames was born in Brazil, Chapter 10 of the paperback suddenly names Robert Coningham's sister Hester Sterling as Fitzjames' mother:

This aligns with the research that Battersby had been doing after his book was published, hoping to find new information for a revised second edition. I obtained a PDF of the first chapters of this prospective second edition and published them on my website with Battersby's family's consent. I later learnt that Battersby ultimately didn't believe in his own 'Hester Sterling is Fitzjames' mother' theory anymore and that he had moved on from Fitzjames research entirely by 2016. (Also there are many mistakes in those chapters on my website but back in 2022 I hadn't been able to access the primary sources I needed yet, so I had no idea if Battersby was correct or not)

Fast forward to 2023 when this paperback edition of Battersby's Fitzjames biography drops all of a sudden, being a strange mix of the original book and a revised manuscript. Maybe there are even more changes from the hardback, I haven't done a full comparison yet. The publisher was being vague about what happened, but I will attempt to get to the bottom of it so that I can correctly represent in my Fitzjames biography why there are two versions of Battersby's book.

Spoiler alert for my Fitzjames biography: Hester Sterling is definitely NOT Fitzjames' mother.

The Top 300 Companies in Ireland

This is going by revenue largely with the main sources listed at the bottom.

Similarly, this likely has a few omissions as numbers vary particularly with Private companies and there are large year-to-year swings in revenue particularly for MNCs with their EMEA or ROW arm in Ireland.

The locations chosen here for companies are their main Operational/Commercial HQ globally or in Ireland, Dublin is heavily featured here in part due to this as a hub for commercial activity & talent but many of these companies have operations outside the capital that actually may employ more (particularly in relation to pharmaceutical production).

Other companies have multiple bases of operations in Ireland mainly due to their being multiple subsidiaries or Logistics & Supply-chain HQ being based closer to production centres while commercial and sales HQ are based in the Capital.
