Everything you need to know about urolithin A
Aging can cause a decline in energy, impacting our ability to handle everyday activities. We may also deal with health challenges as our food intake decreases and digestion becomes less effective, affecting our gut health. In this situation, Urolithin A plays an important role. It is a compound found in whole foods and is also available as a supplement. It functions at the cellular level to enhance muscle strength and aid in nutrient absorption. This article will discuss Urolithin A, its sources, and its advantages in detail.
What is urolithin A
Urolithin A (UA) is a natural substance that comes from plant compounds called polyphenols. You won't find it directly in foods, but it is present in those high in ellagic acid or ellagitannins. When you consume these foods, they travel through the large intestine. The gut microbiome has specific enzymes that break down ellagic acid and ellagitannins into smaller compounds, including urolithins. Instead of being absorbed, it moves through the bloodstream. Any urolithin A or other byproducts that are not absorbed are eventually removed from the body through urine.
Where urolithin A is found
Foods do not have this compound directly. However, fruits and nuts like pomegranates, strawberries, raspberries, and walnuts contain it. You can also take urolithin A supplements. Since we can't get this compound from food alone, a healthy gut is needed to produce it. Ellagic acid can be effectively broken down by different microbes in a healthy gut. Poor diet, stress, and sedentary lifestyles create an imbalance in the gut, which may stop ellagic acid from turning into urolithin A.
What are benefits of urolithin A
Improving mitochondrial health
Most of the energy cells need comes from mitochondria, often called the "powerhouses" of the cell. They create ATP (adenosine triphosphate) through cellular respiration, which is the main energy source for cells. If mitochondria are damaged or age, they generate less energy and release harmful substances that increase stress. The body fixes damaged mitochondria by getting rid of them through a process called mitophagy. Urolithin A plays an important role in helping remove these faulty mitochondria
Enhance muscle strength
Urolithin A is important for muscle recovery, especially after hard workouts. It helps improve how mitochondria work and increases ATP production. Mitochondria are the energy centers of muscle cells, supplying the energy needed for muscle movement and repair. ATP is the energy that powers all cell functions, including muscle growth. When ATP levels drop, muscles find it hard to recover, which can cause fatigue and slow healing. Urolithin A boosts ATP levels, providing muscles with more energy to recover and grow, particularly after intense exercise.  It improves muscle performance and recovery by reducing inflammation, promoting muscle repair, and increasing energy metabolism
Improved cellular energy production
Urolithin A boosts mitochondrial function, which improves ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, the main energy source for cells. This can enhance physical performance, improve muscle function, and raise overall energy levels
Anti aging effects
As we age, our energy decreases because mitochondria become less effective at removing damaged cells. Urolithin A helps boost this process, fighting this decline and supporting cell renewal.
Brain health
As we become older, our cognitive skills also become obsolete. Some research suggests that urolithin A may have neuroprotective properties, potentially protecting brain cells from damage associated with aging and cognitive decline.
Anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties
Urolithin A has antioxidant qualities that help lower stress caused by harmful molecules. It works by removing these molecules and protecting cells from harm. Furthermore, it might also reduce chronic inflammation associated with diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders.
Improves gut health
Urolithin A may contribute to a healthy gut microbiome, indirectly supporting overall digestive health[1]. Its effects on mitochondrial health may extend to the cells lining the intestines, promoting better gut function and integrity.
Cardiovascular health
The anti-inflammatory effects help heart health by lowering stress and inflammation from harmful substances. This can reduce the chance of heart disease, enhance blood vessel function, and boost overall heart health
Metabolic health and fat loss
Urolithin A might enhance insulin sensitivity and assist in controlling blood sugar levels, which is good for metabolic health[2]. It could also help lower excess fat and stop the onset of obesity-related issues, such as type 2 diabetes.
Conclusion
To sum up, Urolithin A plays a significant role in promoting health and vitality. It boosts mitochondrial function, which helps gut health, increases muscle strength, reduces stress from harmful molecules, and supports heart health. Urolithin A is seen as a promising compound because of its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.

Pomegranate: Nature’s Antioxidant Powerhouse—How Its Nutrients Support Heart Health, Brain Function, and More
Pomegranates are a nutritious superfood, prized for both their juicy flavor and high antioxidant content. Urolithin A, a compound formed by gut bacteria from pomegranate compounds, may reverse aging and boost immunity. They're also diabetic-friendly: low glycemic index and insulin-sensitizing effects make them a smart diet choice. Still, diabetics should moderate intake and avoid processed pomegranate products.
Pomegranates, with their vibrant red color and juicy, delicious taste, are not only loved for their rich nutritional value but also have a long history of use in traditional medicine. Known as a "superfood," one of the most prominent features of pomegranates is their high content of antioxidants, particularly polyphenolic compounds like punicalagins and ellagic acid. These natural components effectively neutralize free radicals, slow down the aging process, enhance immune function, and protect cells from oxidative damage. Additionally, pomegranates are a great source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and folate, which support immune health and skin vitality.
In recent years, however, another compound found in pomegranates has started to gain significant attention: Urolithin A. This compound is produced when gut microbiota metabolize ellagic acid and other polyphenols in pomegranates. Its potential health benefits are truly remarkable.
Urolithin A
On August 31, 2023, scientists from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland published a groundbreaking study in the prestigious journal Nature Aging titled "Induction of mitochondrial recycling reverts ageassociated decline of the hematopoietic and immunesystems"
Tumblr media
The research revealed that supplementing with Urolithin A, a mitochondrial regulator, could enhance mitochondrial function in hematopoietic stem cells. This process reverses the aging of these stem cells, improves their regenerative capabilities, and increases the resistance of older mice to viral infections.
In other words, the latest studies show that Urolithin A can significantly delay aging and enhance the body’s immune function.
What is Urolithin A?
Urolithin A is a natural metabolic product primarily generated by gut microbiota that convert the ellagic acid in pomegranates. Research suggests that Urolithin A has notable antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can support cellular health and slow down the aging process. Pomegranates, which are rich in this compound, offer a range of health benefits, including antioxidant, blood pressure-lowering, and anti-cancer properties.
Tumblr media
Pomegranate and Diabetes Management
Pomegranates are also an excellent choice for people with diabetes due to their unique properties. Despite being relatively sweet, pomegranates have a low glycemic index (GI) of around 53, classifying them as a low-GI fruit (foods with a GI of ≤55 are considered low GI).
Studies have found that the antioxidants and various vitamins in pomegranates can help improve insulin sensitivity, promote insulin secretion, and aid in blood sugar regulation. As a result, they can be a valuable addition to a diabetes-friendly diet.
Tumblr media
Important Considerations When Eating Pomegranates
Although pomegranates offer many benefits, it’s important to consume them in moderation, especially for people with diabetes. Here are some key points to consider:
Control Portion Size While pomegranates have a low glycemic index, they still contain sugar and carbohydrates. Therefore, people with diabetes should consume them in moderation, aiming for 100-150g (about 1/5 to 1/4 of a pomegranate) per serving.
Avoid Over-Processed Products Diabetics should avoid overly processed pomegranate products such as pomegranate juice or dried pomegranate, which often contain added sugars and preservatives.
Time and Pairing Matters The best time to eat pomegranates is during breakfast or as a snack between meals. Pairing pomegranate with protein-rich foods or fiber can help slow down the absorption of sugars.
Caution for Diabetic Nephropathy Patients Pomegranates are rich in potassium, which can be problematic for individuals with diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease). High potassium levels can lead to hyperkalemia, so diabetic nephropathy patients should consume pomegranates cautiously or avoid them altogether.
Conclusion
Pomegranates are an incredibly nutrient-dense fruit, offering a wealth of antioxidants, vitamins, and essential nutrients that can support overall health. With their potential to enhance mitochondrial function and immune health through compounds like Urolithin A, they have emerged as a key player in slowing down aging and improving well-being. Pomegranates also offer notable benefits for blood sugar regulation, making them a great option for individuals with diabetes. However, it’s crucial to consume them in moderation and be mindful of portion sizes, especially for those managing blood sugar levels or kidney health.
Incorporating pomegranates into your diet can be a simple yet powerful step toward better health. Whether you're enjoying them fresh or as part of your favorite recipe, these ruby-red gems offer a delicious and nutritious way to boost your wellness.

A report published on January 9, 2019 in Nature Communications suggests a benefit for urolithin A, a metabolite derived from #pomegranate and #berries, in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and are characterized by inflammation due to gut leakage of toxins. Researchers affirm: urolithin A (UroA), a major microbial metabolite derived from polyphenolics of berries and pomegranate #fruits displays anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and anti-aging activities. Here, we show that urolithin A and its potent synthetic analogue (UAS03) significantly enhance gut barrier function and inhibit unwarranted inflammation. Microbiota in our gut has evolved to generate beneficial microbial metabolites in the proximity of the gut barrier. However, the exact role of these metabolites has not been identified and the mechanism in which they exert their function is elusive. In rodent studies, the researchers found that administration of urolithin A or its synthetic analog protected against and reduced colonic inflammation in acute and chronic colitis. A series of experiments demonstrated that the molecules decreased gut permeability by increasing the expression of tight junction proteins that are lost in IBDs. Researchers add: Restoring the gut barrier and reducing the inflammation using a small-molecule will provide a better therapeutic output in the treatment of IBDs. A synthetic analog overcomes the stability limitation that a microbial metabolite poses, thus enhancing the efficacy. The general belief thus far in the field is that urolithins have a beneficial effect only through their anti-inflammatory property. We have for the first time discovered that their major mode of function is repairing the gut barrier dysfunction. Source: https://ift.tt/2PC0rk0 . . . https://instagr.am/p/CIjaMYMnbPE/

Urolithin A Powder General Description
Urolithin A powder is a metabolite compound resulting from the transformation of ellagitannins by the gut bacteria and is an inducer of mitophagy. Urolithin A shifts mitochondria from CI- to CII-driven respiration, extends lifespan and improves muscle function. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as benzo-coumarins or dibenzo-α-pyrones. Its precursors – ellagic acids and ellagitannins – are ubiquitous in nature, including edible plants, such as pomegranates, strawberries, raspberries, and walnuts. Since the 2000s, urolithin A has been subject of preliminary studies regarding its possible biological effects.
Urolithin A powder can improve the quality and function of mitochondria, and increase the strength and endurance of aging muscles. It is the only natural product that has been proven to restart mitochondrial autophagy and reverse muscle aging.
Urolithins are microflora human metabolites of dietary ellagic acid derivatives, such as ellagitannins. They are produced in the human gut, and found in the urine in the form of urolithin B glucuronide after absorption of ellagitannins-containing food such as pomegranate, strawberries, red raspberries, walnuts or oak-aged red wine.
During intestinal metabolism by bacteria, ellagitannins and punicalagins are converted to urolithins, which have unknown biological activity in vivo in humans. Urolithins metabolites of pomegranate juice ellagitannins localize specifically in the prostate gland, colon, and intestinal tissues of mice.
Ellagitannins exhibit low bioavailability and are transformed in the gut to ellagic acid and its microbiota metabolites.
Urolithins are found in plasma mostly as glucuronides at low concentrations.
Urolithins production is dependent on the gut microbiome enterotype. Individuals producing urolithins show a much higher abundance of the Clostridium leptum group of Firmicutes phylum than Bacteroides or Prevotella
Urolithin A powder History
In laboratory studies, urolithin A powder was shown to induce mitophagy, which is a selective recycling of mitochondria by autophagy, a process that cleans defective mitochondria following damage or stress, and tends to become less efficient during aging.[14] This effect has been observed in different animal species (mammalian cells, rodents and C. elegans).
Urolithin A powder Application
Urolithin A powder is intended for use as an ingredient in select foods or for special dietary uses in meal replacement products based on its nutritive activity in supporting general mitochondrial health.
Urolithin A powder More research
Urolithin A is not known to be found in any food. It forms as the result of transformation of ellagic acids and ellagitannins by the gut microflora in humans. Ellagic acid itself results from the hydrolysis of ellagitannins in the gut in the presence of water.[citation needed]
Sources of ellagitannins are: pomegranates, nuts, some berries (raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, cloudberries), tea, muscadine grapes, many tropical fruits, and oak-aged wines (table below).
The conversion of the ellagic acids into urolithin A depends on individual microflora composition and can vary significantly.
Urolithin B powder CAS 1139-83-9

Urolithin B powder General Description
Urolithin B is an urolithin, a type of phenolic compounds produced in the human gut after absorption of ellagitannins-containing food such as pomegranate, strawberries, red raspberries, walnuts or oak-aged red wine. Urolithin B is found in the urine in the form of urolithin B glucuronide.
Urolithin B is one of the gut microbial metabolites of ellagitannins, and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Urolithin B inhibits NF-κB activity by reducing the phosphorylation and degradation of IκBα, and suppresses the phosphorylation of JNK, ERK, and Akt, and enhances the phosphorylation of AMPK. Urolithin B is also a regulator of skeletal muscle mass. Urolithin B can also display estrogenic and/or anti-estrogenic activity.
Urolithin B powder History
Urolithin B can be used as an drug for antitumor and anticancer. Urolithin B( CAS NO :1139-83-9) is an urolithin ,it is also produced in the human gut after absorption of ellagitannins from pomegranate. Urolithin B can mitigate muscle damage experienced during intense exercise and protect muscle against stresses induced by a high-fat diet.
Urolithin B powder is  also an intestinal microbial metabolite of ellagitannis and exhibits potent anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant activies depending on the assay system and conditions. Urolithin B can also display estrogenic and/or anti-estrogenic activity. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Urolithin B is also used be a regulator of skeletal muscle mass.
And Urolithin B has been shown to cross the blood brain barrier, and may have neuroprotective effects against Alzheimer’s Disease.
Urolithin B powder More research
Urolithin B can mitigate muscle damage experienced during intense exercise and protect muscle against stresses induced by a high-fat diet. Clinical research on Urolithin B in mice found that it enhanced myotubes growth and differentiation by increasing protein synthesis. It demonstrated an ability to inhibit the ubiquitin–proteasome pathway (UPP), the principal mechanism for protein catabolism. It also induced muscle hypertrophy and reduced muscle atrophy.
When compared to testosterone, Urolithin B when taken at 15 uM increased androgen receptor activity by 90% while testosterone was only able to accomplish increased receptor activity of 50% at 100uM. This means that it takes a lot less Urolithin B to increase androgen activity more effectively then the higher amount of testosteronewhich increases androgen activity less effectively.
Moreover, most effective 15uM of Urolithin B larger muscle protein synthesis via 96% when in comparison to 100uM of insulin, which larger muscle protein synthesis via most effective 61%. The belief is that it takes a long way much less Urolithin B to extend muscle protein synthesis with a lot upper degree of effectiveness.
This studies show that Urolithin B can inhibit protein catabolism while simultaneously increase protein synthesis, it is a natural ingredient that helps to build lean muscle while preventing muscle breakdown.

How Pomegranate Puts Chemo & Radiation To Shame !
Ever since chemotherapy and radiation became the 'standard of care,' oncology has been in the Dark Ages, often causing more harm and human suffering than it alleviates. Could the scientific community finally be waking up to the incomparable cancer-killing power of foods to cure what conventional treatment only makes worse?
One of the most important discoveries in biology and medicine of the past fifteen years is that cancer stem cells are largely responsible for the failure of conventional cancer treatment. These cells, which represent a small population of tumor cells (~ 1:1000), are cancer cells characterized by stem cell properties such as self-renewal and the ability to give rise to all cell types found in a particular cancer sample. These cells drive tumor development, progression, metastasis and drug resistance and are highly resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. To the contrary, these conventional treatments actually increase their number and malignancy.1,2   Worse, conventional radiotherapy appears capable of converting non-cancerous breast cells into cancer stem cells.  You can learn more about this by reading Study: Radiation Therapy Can Make Cancers 30x More Malignant.

RGCB scientists find pomegranate husk can prevent breast cancer

RGCB scientists find pomegranate husk can prevent breast cancer
Tumblr media
Dr. Bilqeesa Bhat
Pomegranate has a recorded history of medicinal properties which can be attributed to the presence of a large number of phytochemicals present in it. With a lot of information available, Dr. Sreeja S and her colleagues at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB), Thiruvananthapuram established the tremendous potential of pomegranate outer hard husk (pericarp) to prevent breast cancer, which is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women.
Dr. Sreeja’s team demonstrated the role of pomegranate pericarp methanolic extract in reducing proliferation in breast cancer cells by binding to the estrogen receptor (ER) safely. Pomegranate pericarp extract displays a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERM) profile. The SERM are ER ligands used in the hormonal therapy for ER-breast cancers.
Like estrogen, the methanolic extract also reduces low-density lipid (LDL) levels increased after surgical removal of ovaries. Dr. Sreeja discovered that it could prevent the cell proliferation induced by 27 hydroxycholesterol (27HC), an endogenous SERM that can act through ER-mediated mechanisms. Cholesterol metabolite 27HC has been found to act via ER and result in breast cancer cell proliferation leading to cancers. Most of the findings, therefore, indicate that pomegranate extracts can act as potent phytoestrogens, and act via various means to reduce estrogen carcinogenesis.
Different types of breast cancers occur depending on the source, aggressiveness and expression of different types of protein receptors present on breast cancer cells. Depending on the presence or absence of estrogen receptor (ER), breast cancer is called as ER-positive or negative, respectively. For ER-positive breast cancer, one of the major treatment regimes involves the use of tamoxifen, a selective ER modulator or SERM. The tamoxifen acts like estrogen or opposes its action depending on the tissue it acts upon. It has opposite effects of estrogen and may protect against breast cancer. Furthermore, tamoxifen also retains its positive effects like that of estrogen in the cardiovascular system and may cause endometrium cancer. Hence, ideal SERM must retain the positive effects of estrogen and have minimal side effects.
Pomegranate is rich in polyphenols and has an abundant amount of ellagitannins, which are broken down to ellagic acid within the body. The ellagic acid is further metabolized to urolithins by gut microflora. The past decade has witnessed extensive research on these polyphenolic metabolites with huge health benefits such as cardiovascular health, neurodegenerative diseases, muscle strengthening, increasing lifespan and preventing cancers. Dr. Sreeja’s team is now on the journey of finding how this compound can act as an ideal SERM.

After complete ripening for its edible seed, once the shell was discarded, it’s used as a garnish or a bite. Nuts of the eastern black walnut and butternuts are less commonly consumed.
Characteristics of Walnuts (Akhrot)
Walnuts (Akhrot) are rounded, single-seeded stone fruits of the walnut tree widely used for the meat after completely ripening. After full ripening, the elimination of the husk shows the wrinkly walnut shell, which is typically commercially discovered in 2 sections (three or four-segment shells can also form). During the ripening process, the husk will get brittle and also the shell tough.
The shell encloses the kernel, which is usually made up of two halves separated by a partition.  The seed kernels — generally accessible as polyunsaturated fats — are enclosed in a brown seed coat that contains antioxidants. The antioxidants protect the oil-rich seed out of atmospheric oxygen, thus preventing rancidity.
Walnuts are late to mature leaves, typically not until over halfway through the spring. They exude chemicals into the soil to protect against competing plant from growing. As a result of this, flowers or vegetable gardens shouldn’t be planted near to them.
1. Walnut Akhrot are Rich in Antioxidants:
Walnuts (Akhrot) have higher antioxidant activity than any other common nut.
This activity comes from Vitamin E, melatonin and plant compounds known as polyphenols, which are especially high in the papery skin of walnuts.
A preliminary, little study in healthy adults revealed that consuming a walnut-rich meal prevented oxidative damage of “bad” LDL cholesterol after ingestion, whereas a refined-fat meal did not.

Neuroprotective effects of pomegranate juice against Parkinson's disease.
PMID:  Int J Mol Sci. 2019 Dec 27 ;21(1). Epub 2019 Dec 27. PMID: 31892167 Abstract Title:  Neuroprotective Effects of Pomegranate Juice against Parkinson's Disease and Presence of Ellagitannins-Derived Metabolite-Urolithin A-In the Brain. Abstract:  Pomegranate juice is a rich source of ellagitannins (ETs) believed to contribute to a wide range of pomegranate's health benefits. While a lot of experimental studies have been devoted to Alzheimer disease and hypoxic-ischemic brain injury, our knowledge of pomegranate's effects against Parkinson's disease (PD) is very limited. It is suggested that its neuroprotective effects are mediated by ETs-derived metabolites-urolithins. In this study, we examined the capability of pomegranate juice for protection against PD in a rat model of parkinsonism induced by rotenone. To evaluate its efficiency, assessment of postural instability, visualization of neurodegeneration, determination of oxidative damage to lipids andα-synuclein level, as well as markers of antioxidant defense status, inflammation, and apoptosis, were performed in the midbrain. We also check the presence of plausible active pomegranate ETs-derived metabolite, urolithin A, in the plasma and brain. Our results indicated that pomegranate juice treatment provided neuroprotection as evidenced by the postural stability improvement, enhancement of neuronal survival, its protection against oxidative damage and α-synuclein aggregation, the increase in mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase activity, and maintenance of antiapoptotic Bcl-xL protein at the control level. In addition, we have provided evidence for the distribution of urolithin A to the brain.
