HWLR Alterverse AU: Racing to Success

The campers were all lined up, ready to start the first race of the season. Before that though, Dash had to fill them in on what they could expect for the day.

"Here at the Ultimate Garage Racing Camp, you're competing to be the Camp Champ!" "You know it!" The campers all cheered, and then, Dash continued. "Today, you'll be racing in the first of many epic mega races- three stages long, and the winner of each will get a Flame Badge! Get enough Flame Badges throughout the season, and you'll be crowned Camp Champ!" "Yeah!" "Let's go!" "Come on, let's check out the track builder to see the course!"

They all ran over to the viewing table to see what challenges this race had in store for them. "In stage one, you'll blaze past the fabulously fun Fire House! Then, zoom through the Impound Lot's totally tricky tracks for stage two! Finally, you'll race around the city and cross the finish line! But, drive fast: the last camper to complete each stage will be out! Hit it Squeakers! Track Builder, go!" The button was pressed, and the campers watched as the track suddenly appeared. Once that was done, they returned to the table.

"None of you slowpokes stand a chance, today or ever! I might be a third generation racer, but I'm going to win this my way!" 🩶"Aw snap, you all need some sunscreen because you just got burned!"🩶 "Our families might not be into racing the way yours is, Axle, but anyone can be a champion!" "Loving the passion, but while it's fun to win, a Hot Wheels race is about bringing people together. Now, rev those engines, it's go time!" "Challenge Accepted!"

"There's nowhere to go but up, and my car is going to show it! I choose: the Dragon Blaster!" "I choose: the Skull Crusher!" 💛"I choose: the Mountain Mauler!"💛 🩶"I choose: the Mad Manga!"🩶 "I choose: the Rip Rod!" "I choose: the Street Wiener!"

"On your mark, get set...Hot Wheels!" And off they went!

🎤"Hey hey hey Hot Wheels fans, your favorite reporter, Speed E. Getaway here, giving you the play-by-play on the first Camp Champ race! Who will start off the season with a win? I can't see into the future, but I can see our racers coming! Turn on your AC folks, cause this race is about to heat up: stage one at the Fire House is straight ahead!"🎤

As they approached, the main obstacle of the Fire House revealed itself. 🩶"Oh, are those mega-sized water balloons?!"🩶 "It's a Hot Wheels race, Sidecar. We've got to be prepared for anything!" "Doesn't matter what the obstacles are, I can push past them easy!" And he did: even when the balloons hit his car, he just powered on through to finish the stage first! "Oh yeah!" Spark, Sidecar, and Mac followed close behind. "Come on Cruise, you can do this!" 🎤"One spot left: Will Cruise and the Dragon Blaster fire things up, or will Brights roar into stage two with the Rip Rod?"🎤 One more water balloon came shooting out. It would have hit Cruise, but she sped up just enough to avoid it- which caused it to hit Brights instead, making her spin out! 🎤"Cruise makes it! Which means Brights is erased from the race- metaphorically, of course. She's just heading back to the Ultimate Garage."🎤 "Whew, that was close! Good race Brights!" "I'll get it next time!"

At this point, Dash videocalled the campers to check their progress. "Nice driving, racers! You made it to stage two- but be careful, the Impound Lot is a very tough track!"

"Time to rattle some cages!" The campers all timed their approach so the opening and closing gates wouldn't trap them. "I know I'm driving a giant hot dog, but stop trying to chomp me!" Axle got through this obstacle just as easily as he got through the last one. "First again! I'll teach you all how to drive like a real champ when we're back at the Ultimate Garage!" "You haven't won yet: I'm still here!" 🩶"I'm about to bounce you from this race!"🩶 "We'll see about that!" As they approached the final set of gates, Cruise accidently bumped Sidecar, causing him to spin out slightly. "Oops." 🩶"Aw snap."🩶 The gates closed, locking him in. "Sorry, Sidecar!" 🎤"And Cruise is through! Now it's time to tow Sidecar off the tracks, cause he is outta here!"🎤 "I thought I was a goner back there! You saw my moves, right?" 💛"I saw you spin out Sidecar."💛 "That was an accident! But, this is a race, Spark- I'm trying to win!"

Time for another progress check! "You kids are tearing up the track! But, I hope you like surprises, cause this last stage has a big one!" "Is it a fruit platter? This Street Wiener is making me hungry!" "Close- it's a giant robotic cobra!" "How is that close?" "I named the cobra Peaches!"

🎤"It might be named Peaches, but this cobra is not sweet! Let's see which racer can tame the beast and cross the finish line to hiss-tory!"🎤

The racers all rush toward the final obstacle. 🎤"And Cruise moves into second place!"🎤 She tried to get past Axle, but he was able to block her. "Seems like you're running out of gas! And just so we're clear- I meant you, not your car!" "Yeah, I got the message, but I've also got plenty left in the tank! Watch!" This time, she managed to get by him. 🎤"Whoa! Cruise drops a cool comeback and pulls even with Axle! This kid can do it all, folks!"🎤 The two racers started bumping their cars, each trying to slow the other down. "It's been a good race, Axle, but now I'm gonna prove that anyone can be a champion- including me!" With one last bump, she managed to get him to spin out- but in doing so, Spark and Mac ended up spinning out too! Cruise and Axle made it through the cobra's jaw safely, but Spark and Mac got stuck on its fangs, weighing it down and overlooking the street below! They and the spectators began to panic at what could happen.

Meanwhile, Cruise was in the lead at the final stretch. She could win it all, but...🎤"If that breaks, those racers will be pancakes!"🎤 "My friends are in danger- I have to help!" She quickly turned around, which Axle was just as quick to comment on. "Hey Cruise, not sure if you noticed, but the finish line's this way!" "I know, but right now, there's something more important than winning. Fire wings, activate! Go Hot Wheels!" Flying into action, she raced toward her friends. 💛"According to my calculations, this will end very, very, very badly."💛 "If we make it out okay, I promise I'll start washing my hair...sometimes." No sooner was that said than Cruise got them unstuck and safely down! 🎤"Wow! That was amazing! But while Cruise impressed, it looks like Axle will win the race!"🎤 "Huh?!" At that moment, Axle crossed the finish line, the crowd cheering his name.

"Spark, Mac, I'm really sorry. I put winning ahead of everything else, and ending up putting you both at risk." 💛"You don't have to apologize, Cruise."💛 "Really- you gave up the win to save us! And is it just me, or is anyone else craving pancakes?" "Come on, let's finish this together!"

All the campers made it back to the Ultimate Garage, and the results were given out. "Way to go Axle, you won all three stages, so you earned three Flame Badges!" And just like that, the badges appeared on screen. "You'll all have the chance to earn more Flame Badges over the next ten weeks. Whoever ends camp with the most badges will be the Camp Champ!" "Cool!" "Oh yeah, Camp Champ, here I come! Victory dance time! I'm gonna be Camp Champ, I'm gonna be Camp Champ, I'm gonna be Camp Champ!" 🐭squeaking noises🐭 "Oh, that's right Squeakers! I said a Hot Wheels race was about more than just winning. Cruise, you showed that by sacrificing your victory to save your friends! That's why you also earned a Flame Badge!"

"I got a badge?!" "She got a badge?!" "Way to go!" 💛"Congratulations, Cruise!"💛 "Maybe you should hold off on that victory dance, Axle- camp's just getting started!" In anger, Axle kicked a tire- and apparently, those things are tougher than they look! "Oh! Ow..."

With how overwhelming life has become, and the constantly conflicting schedules that mean she can’t see her friends, Spark picks up a less than healthy coping mechanism.

“Hey there, Hot Wheels Fans, and welcome to today’s big broadcast! We have not one, not five, but seven guests joining us today! You may recognise some of these guests from the Ultimate Garage Camp & Tournaments hosted 8 years ago, or from more recent endeavours, from making grand debuts to the pro racing scene, saving the city from mass destruction on multiple accounts, or the latest technological innovations in Hot Wheels technology! Without further ado, here are today’s panelists!”

“Spark Turner- The founder of SparkPlug Tech, and the next big name in innovation, from cars, to defensive technology, and everything in-between!”

“Mac Caliper- Hot Wheels City’s most popular stunt driver, whose record-breaking feats are yet to be beat!”

“Brights Hikari- The Hot Wheels 500’s latest track designer, a professional photographer, and a visual designer for all things Hot Wheels- what can’t she do?”

“Sidecar Cotter- Hot Wheels City News’ very own, our latest addition to our commentary and journalism teams, and a hit with racing fans everywhere!”

Question 1: “It must be nice seeing so many big stars in one place! And speaking of stars...do any of you ever wonder what lies beyond them?”

Here’s what our panelists had to say!

S. Cotter: “Beyond the stars? Ohh, you mean like outer space?”

A. Spoiler: “What else would it mean, Sidecar?”

S. Turner: “Scientifically speaking, you can’t exactly go ‘beyond’ the stars, considering that our universe is incredibly vast, and any planets or galaxies present would be accompanied by stars-”

B. Hikari: “ALIENS! I think there are aliens out there! Little green ones, or big scary ones, I’m sure there’s something else out there!”

C. Feng: “Do the aliens in your hypothesis know how to race? Racing on another planet would be awesome!”

C. Rearview: “You really think you could beat aliens in a race?”

M. Caliper: “And the stunts!”

S. Turner: “Actually, stunts would be pretty difficult on most planets, considering how different the gravity would be from Earth. As for aliens? The kind you’re talking about probably don’t exist.”

B. Hikari: “We’ve fought off giant monsters, and you invent superpowered cars on the daily! And aliens are where you draw the line? Lighten up!”

HWLR: Future AU - Full Body References

I originally had made these for myself to use, but I wanted to share the full costume designs I’ve made for my AU! Here are the full-body, front facing references for all 7 main cast members, plus abridged versions of the character descriptions, including full names, ages, heights and professions. The full descriptions can be found on my original posts !

I have lots of stuff planned for this AU, and I’d love to share this! Although I’m not sure if I’m best doing art, comics, or oneshots. I do have a timeline and order to everything, but they also may not be shared in order. Let me know what mediums you’d prefer to see, and who’s stories you want to see told! If you have questions regarding the AU, please send them my way! I have more free time at the moment, so I may include some doodles to go with any I get.

Additionally, I have the references split up on smaller canvases, with some additional design notes and guidelines to go with them. If you can’t read the text, but want to know what it says, let me know! I’ll reblog the post with the typed-out version of these notes.

HWLR: Future AU ✨

Cooper “Coop” Feng is the current Hot Wheels City racing champion, having held the title since he was old enough to join the city’s biggest racing cup! Still charismatic and confident, Coop is finding it a little harder now that he isn’t around all of his friends 24/7, but his spirit is yet to be extinguished. Coop is trying his best to balance professional life- being in the spotlight, chased around by fans and brands yearning for more of him, as well as his changing relationships, including feeling isolated from his friends, and his ever-complicated bond with racing rival Cruise.

Cruise Rearview is Coop’s greatest rival on the track- she’s fast, determined and undeniably talented, but still yet to best him. Her relationship with her father is strained at best, after she made the decision to pursue racing full-time, against his wishes. (Perhaps he should have thought about this before training her to be a racer!) Cruise is trying her best to turn a fresh page, and be a better person, but that is hard when people expect her to play the racing persona of “villain” even when she’s off the tracks.

Mackenzie “Mac” Caliper loves his job as a stunt driver. Rather than racing, he gets to show off all of his best stunts and tricks to arenas full of adoring fans. From cars, to monster trucks, and even a bike or two, he’s tried it all. When he’s doing stunts, Mac feels his best. In his spare time, Mac has picked up a bit of mechanic work, learning some skills from Spark. He loves to work on his jump trucks to make sure they are in top shape.

Samantha “Spark” Turner has become an inventor, putting her bright mind to use at every chance she can get. She makes everything, from new Power-Ups, boosters, and even cars! Spark also has a tendency to isolate and overwork herself to a concerning degree, disappearing into her lab for days when she’s especially invested in a project. She insists, everything must work perfectly, and she won’t rest until they do!

HWLR: Future AU- Casual Outfit References (Coop & Cruise)

I’ve drawn these designs a few times, so I found it befitting to make proper references for these two looks! While the racers don’t get many days where something isn’t going on (wether that’s races, training, events, advertising or something else entirely), it would be silly to spend the days you do have off in the racing gear… even if they’re still incredibly recognisable without it on.

Like my previous design references, I made these to use for myself, but wanted to share the full looks as I’ve drawn them before, and they have changed or evolved in little ways as I’ve refined them. They also include abridged descriptions for both characters, and a few design notes.

Bonus! Some of the developmental material and further annotation on these looks! A small look into my process and some of the choices I made in designing and finalising these looks. You can also spot some scrapped or unused concepts on the visual inspiration boards, and what stayed the same. As always, any and all questions regarding the AU are open!

What birthdays do you think the Hot Wheels let's race cast has.

Like, you usually say Axle and Sidecar are the same age but who's really older? Like are they days apart or months?

Hi!! Thanks for the ask!

Birthdays and ages are a fun one, because there isn’t really much to go off of. The most we have is the confirmation of a birthday month for one character, that being Mac (his birthday’s in December)! We’re not given much in terms of age range either, that’s a real vague “kid to preteen”. Regardless, I do have my own headcanons for each character’s birthday and age!

These headcanons function under the assumption that the series takes place in the year the show came out, which is 2024!

Here’s my birthdate & age order headcanons! Answering your other question, Axle is the oldest of the campers, and is older than Sidecar by a few months! I tried my best to keep it as simple and readable as possible, but a typed version will be included too!

Axle Spoiler - March 5th (2011) - Age 13 at time of series

Sidecar - June 11th (2011)- Age 13 at time of series

Mac - December 24th (2011) - Age 12 at time of series

Cruise - April 25th (2012) - Age 12 at time of series

Coop - May 18th (2012) - Age 12 at time of series

Brights - October 4th (2012) - Age 11 at time of series

Spark - February 11th (2013) - Age 11 at time of series

HWLR: Future AU (Part 2!) ✨

Axle Spoiler, son of now retired former champion Striker Spoiler, has become a racer himself. There are big expectations for him, and often times, he’s not sure if he’s meeting them. While his father is undeniably proud of him, the public seem so critical of each of his performances, and the comparisons seem to endlessly pile up as more races happen. He is also the most socially aware of what is happening, and recognises that his friends are struggling just as much as him, even if the pressure they face could be perceived as “less”. He cares, but can’t resist teasing them a little, treating everything with an “I told you so” mentality.

Bryce “Brights” Hikari is constantly putting her creative mind to good use. Her primary career is to design the race courses for all of Hot Wheels City’s biggest races and tournaments, but she also does photography, and visual design for the cars, working alongside Spark, who handles the mechanical side. Brights is as bubbly and bright as they come, but she’s also self-aware of how lonely things have become, and that everyone else is closer to eachother than they are with her. But she finds it best that she not mention it just yet… everything is so stressful, why add more issues to everyone else’s plates?

Simon “Sidecar” Cotter has always been great at generating hype for other people, and he seems to have embraced that role even further. Working under reporter and announcer Speedy Getaway, Sidecar has quickly become the most popular commentator in Hot Wheels City! The public love his enthusiastic personality, and he seems unbiased, for the most part… until Axle is brought into the picture, as his support and enthusiasm becomes unprofessional.
