Season One Recap

SEASON TWO RECAP

e1- In My Time Of Dying - Dean has an out of body experience when he nearly dies (again (see s1e12)) but this time he befriends the reaper instead of being angry with it (though he does sort of hunt her for a bit). John makes a deal with the Yellow-Eyed Demon and trades his life for Deans! Sad! They also lose the Colt.

e2- Everybody Loves a Clown - The boys meet Ellen, Jo, and Ash, some hunters with some serious know-how. While they wait for info from Ash they hunt a Rakshasa (ancient Hindu creature) dressed as a clown at a carnival! Sam has a lot of feelings about dead dad and Dean lets out his emotions on his car.

e3- Bloodlust - Meet Gordon, a vampire hunter who only sees in black and white, while the dean learns to see in shades of grey. The boys save a nest of vampires who only drink animal blood! But then wonder about all the other creatures they might have killed in cold blood. (Sad.)

e4- Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things - While Sam visits their moms grave, Dean detects some zombie action at the grave next door. Dean really opens up in this one! Sad boys are sad!

e5- Simon Said - Sam is seeing people dying so the brothers gotta go meet some gifted brothers who didn't even know they were brothers! They can make you do what they want just by telling you what to do which is a scary power and the good twin (Andy) has to shoot the bad twin which is sad.

e6- No Exit - Jo tracks one H. H. Holmes to the location of the Philly prison where he was executed but is now haunting and kidnapping young blondes (like Jo). We find out John and Jo's dad hunted together when Jo's dad died. Rough!

e7- The Usual Suspects - Linda Blair guest stars in this episode as a cop who see's a scary but helpful ghost! The brothers almost get locked away but Linda Blair saves the day!

e8- Crossroad Blues - Hellhounds! People making deals with demons are being ate up by big, black hellhounds. Sam and Dean try to break things up by tricking a demon and saving a nice fellow who only ever wanted to save his wife.

e9- Croatoan - The brothers experience their own Roanoke when a mysterious demon virus makes a town go crazy and attack each other. No blood pacts here! The episode ends on a cliffhanger about Sam!

e10- Hunted - Sam splits off from Dean and meets Ava (guest star Katharine Isabelle) another psychic sibling of his who foresees Sam's death (oh no!). Gordon is also back (s2e3) and he is now hunting Sam (oh no!). Ava is able to save Sam but when the boys go to check on Ava at the end her husband is murdered and she is MIA.

e11- Playthings - A hotel haunted with a little girl's spirit but who is kept away but her sister's Hoodoo comes into focus when the living sister has a stroke and cannot continue her magic. Sam makes Dean promise to kill him if he ever goes dark side (sad!).

e12- Nightshifter - The brothers deal with the law because there is yet another shapeshifter, this one can shift fast too and it is robbing banks! Our fellas are in deep trouble by the end of this episode.

e13- Houses of the Holy - A dead priest is playing angel and he tells folks to kill the naughty around town so it is up to Dean to suss out the truth because Sam is on the angel train. By the end Sam is disillusioned and Dean is starting to believe.

e14- Born Under a Bad Sign - Sam is possessed by Meg in this hangover type episode where they must retrace Sam's steps. Jo almost gets hurt and Bobby helps them make Sam Sam again.

e15- Tall Tales - The boys recount to Bobby both sides of what happened to them during a weird case. A Trickster has them all turned around and he escapes in the end!

e16- Roadkill - The boys investigate yet another haunted highway (see s1e13). They get help from a friendly ghost who doesn't know she is a ghost (sad!). Then they help her let go!

e17- Heart - We have an unaware-wolf as in a werewolf that doesn't know she's a werewolf. They think they cure her and then Sammy gets laid! But there is no cure for being a werewolf so she goes out noble in the end.

e18- Hollywood Babylon - A Hollywood studio uses real invocations and summons actual spirits for its horror movie, who knew? The writer knew! And he didn't like what they did with his script so he sicked the spirits on those who opposed him. 

e19- Folsom Prison Blues - The boys get caught on purpose so they can investigate a ghost killing folks in a jail for a friend of their dads. Turns out an old nurse was killing people she thought were bad but the Winchesters put an end to her.

e20- What Is and What Should Never Be - A djinn puts Dean in a fantasy world where he was never a hunter. While there are parts that are great like Mama Mary being alive, he and Sammy don't have a relationship. In the end he makes the hard choice to go back to the real world of hunting with Sam.

e21- All Hell Breaks Loose (Part One) - Sam and all the other demon siblings are brought to a ghost town (literally) to battle royale for who gets to be the best demon child! We meet back with Ava (s2e10), Andy (s2e5), and Ash (s2e2) who all die but Sam also totally dies at the end!

e22- All Hell Breaks Loose (Part Two) - Dean makes a deal to bring Sam back. The devil's gate is opened which is a portal to Hell and it unleashes an army of demons on the world! John crawls out of Hell to save Dean from the Yellow-Eyed Demon who Dean then shoots with the colt! They finally kill the son-of-a-bitch, avenging Mary's death! Sam finds out he died and says he will save Dean from his deal because Sam is also a good brother.

5x22: Swan Song

In light of recent news, we thought we’d finally tackle what might have been the end (until someone went and made a demon deal, giving us 10 more years of our beloved show!) It’s weird watching this and seeing what a bummer this all would have been if it had ended like this. Sure, it was epic, but I guess I’m a sucker for a happy ending when it’s about characters I’ve come to love more than my own family. I’m also going to point to this Twitter thread about good and bad show endings. Swan Song wouldn’t have been bad had we only had TFW for five years, but we’ve watched them grow over 15 years now, and I want to see them get some peace. (Thanks to all the meta writers for throwing out the much needed hope!)

We open with Chuck Shurley narrating the origin story of the most important object in pretty much the entire universe. And I’m literally two minutes into rewatching this episode and already crying. He’s tells us about it’s original owner, Sal Moriarty. (Oh, Eric Kripke, of course it was.)

And how, after he died, it ended up in the hands of John Winchester, after some persuasion by his time traveling son.

Fade to Sam and Dean in Bobby’s salvage yard, drinking beer from the little green cooler. Dean tells Sam that he’s “in” on having Sam say yes to the devil.

Dean acknowledges that Sam can make his own choices. “Watching out for you? That’s kinda been my job, you know? More than that, it’s kinda who I am.” Seeing this image Dean has of himself shift to NOT be this is really great. Dean asks if this is really what Sam wants. Sam is more resigned than enthusiastic to the plan, obv.

Cut to Team Free Will collecting demon blood like they’re stocking up for the apocalypse (err..). Dean confers with Bobby about Lucifer’s location and they determine it is Detroit.

Holy mother of Crowley, let’s talk about season 8 ep 10 of spn since I just watched it.

First of all, we get the sweet moment of Castiel trying his best to redeem himself. May we remember he’s doing it in a way no one else is telling him too. All he has to do is listen to Heaven’s orders at the moment, but he goes the extra gorgeous mile by helping then humans outside of his responsibility. The whole time I’m watching it I can just FEEL the guilt oozing out of this angel and it’s so pathetically perfect. It fits his character to a T.

Then there’s the more common use of how Dean acts in his OWN actions. Castiel is using firmer tones to get what he wants, JUST LIKE DEAN. Even if at this moment their relationship is frayed by his off behavior Dean literally lights up when Cass acts remotely like him. (These gays I swear, they’ll be the death of me.)

Now we also see his torn devotion. When he is being told to kill Samandriel HE HESITATES. When he hears the scream of a fellow, good, angel being tortured he’s reminded of his own (possible) tortures. That heaven and hell are using the same tactic to get something they want out of the angels. And even when he kills Samandriel you can see how it eats him up inside. He’s beginning to stray, AGAIN! And why? The same thing that the others claim to be his only fault, his heart is so big. I love how you can see the pain in his eyes as he’s made to lie to Dean and Sam.

AND GOD HIMSELF STRIKE ME DOWN IF I DON’T MENTION HOW DEAN LOOKS AT THIS MAN. I mean the pride, the concern, the everything! God I can’t wait for these two gays to finally confess the deep yearning THEY SO OBVIOUSLY FEEL.

Anywho, this is a hellhole and paradise of my own making and I’m willing to sit in it. I love this show and how it shows its character’s developments.

A Little Bit Main Arc:

15 - We are introduced to the idea of Death as a horseman, and the whole reason there was a case was so Death could send Bobby a message. But there's not a lot of main arc-talk beyond that.

19 - This is an interesting episode. The reason it is happening is bc gods want to prevent the apocalypse. So it's kinda main arc, but it's also a one time thing (besides Gabriel)

Main Plot

Lucifer is recently freed, and has a plan to start to apocalypse. Dean learns he is Michael's vessel, and Sam, Lucifer's. The apocalypse is set to start after Michael and Lucifer fight. They try to figure out a way to stop the archangels while having nearly every angel and demon working to make the apocalypse happen.

Character Analysis

Dean:

I'll give you the summary before the long paragraph:

Dean is hurt. He feels isolated, and he hates it. If he didn't have abandonment issues before, he does now. The biggest thing is that he is carrying the weight of the world. Literally. He feels responsible for everything that happens around him, and he feels it is his responsibility to do the impossible: stop the apocalypse and save the world.

To summarize my summary, he is is under A LOT of pressure. He is discouraged. He is tired.

When it comes to Sam, Dean is hurt, he is angry, he doesn't trust him, and he has completely lost his faith in him. He feels distant from his brother that he's codependent with. He had to fight through a lot of emotional turmoil between Sam and recently-freed Lucifer and everything else going on. He needed to focus, so when Sam said they should split, Dean let him go. He then tried to convince himself that he was better off without him beyond just needing to focus. In The End, he realizes he needs Sam with him. He didn't forgive him, yet. It kinda annoyed me how he acted towards Sam in these few episodes, but I get it. Then between Bobby's injury and Sam, Dean felt a lot of added pressure. Then he loses more people in the fight, which he always feels responsible for. He slowly was regaining his faith in Sam when that crumbles again. He is then told he is dead inside, and he believes it. He is exhausted, hopeless, still carrying the weight of being responsible for everything and everyone. Then it's shown Sam's happiest memories are while being away from his family the same episode he is told God does not care about the apocalypse, and Dean totally loses all faith in everything, including Sam. He goes off in his own to do what he needs to do to save the world. Even if it ends him. When caught, he says all these things to his family to make it easier for them to let him go. Luckily Sam gets through to him, and they reconcile. Dean gets a little brighter again. He found the fight within himself, as well as started trusting Sam again. He was able to fight. He had to sacrifice Sam for the world, but it didn't break him the way it would've earlier in the season, unless you see his "not looking for Sam" as giving up. The boy needs a break.

Sam:

Summary: Sam spent the whole season trying to redeem himself, but he doesn't believe he can be redeemed. His self-worth is in Hell. To the point he decides to go there to look for it.

Sam started of fresh off of demon blood, but with no withdrawal, leaving him able to focus on redemption and his guilt. He hated himself for season 4. What didn't help was Dean's lack of faith or trust him in. "Bobby" said horrible things and told him to "lose his number", and Sam accepted it. Meg beat on him. Zachariah beat on him. But nothing made him break the way Dean's words did. He lost any leftover confidence in himself. I think Sam deciding to leave may have been good for him. He was struggling with cravings everytime he was around demons, his brother had no faith in him and he felt like a burden, and he had to find himself again after the mess of the last few seasons. Unfortunately, I think his decision was mostly based on his interpretation that Dean didn't want him around, which was proven when Dean agreed that he should go. And that he sees himself as a danger and burden. We do see Sam's anger pop out again, which he is able to get control of, so that's growth. While he was gone, he found a friend who said everyone is redeemable. She saw the good in him, and that helped. All this then to learn he was Lucifer's vessel. But he found it in him to fight for redemption, again. He went to Dean. And they reconcile, very temporarily. We see him still have faith in others while having none in himself. His rage built up, and he went to Dean for help, only to he shot down. He had to do it on his own. He fought and fought and fought. Fought his rage. Fought for redemption. Fought his addiction. Fought Lucifer's mind screwing. All while not having Dean emotionally. He stuck by Dean, and he fought. He even had to keep Dean from completely giving up. He took on that responsibility, never losing faith in Dean. And they get to reconcile. Desperate to save the world and to find redemption, Sam decides the best way to do both is by sacrificing himself and literally jumping into Hell. But not before ensuring Dean's happiness (happy being relative)

Cas:

Cas starts off with his faith in God intact. He wants to find God, bc he believes God cares and will help. He shows his faith in God multiple times. He stands by it. There are moments he struggles internally with having to chose between his faith in God and his faith in Dean. His goals are finding God, and saving Dean. Both which he works hard at. He is weakend by helping the boys, but he does it anyway. And then everything he knows crashes down around him. He finds out God does not care. This just takes everything out of him. He becomes depressed. If he isn't Castiel, Angel of the Lord, then who is he? To cope, he finds a way to get drunk. Dean tries to comfort him, and it does help. Until Dean does something not so great, and Cas gets angry. He is so lost. He lost everything, and for what? "I rebelled for this??". But the same episode, he's sacrificing himself again. He knows what he's fighting for. Then he gets weakend further. He feels useless. He tries to express that, but just gets shot down. He still is badass in the fight tho. He doesn't give up. And in the end, he's regained his power, and found purpose as an angel beyond helping the Winchesters.

He learns a lot about humanity from Dean throughout the season (which is hilarious that that's his source).

Dean and Cas:

Their relationship grows a lot this season. Dean doesn't have Sam the way he used to, which gives Cas more space in his life. They go out and have fun. Cas shows up more.

From the start of this season, we can see Dean caring. He's sad when he found out Cas died. (But not to the extent of later seasons' deaths.) He verbally considers Cas a friend. And of course he is relieved when he comes back. We see Dean trusting Cas with his special necklace. They hunt. They hang out. Dean grows fond of him. They bond over their daddy issues. When Dean sees Cas at the end of The End, he recognizes that he like Cas the way he is. We also start to see Dean's dislike of Cas's disappearances. We see Cas showing up whenever Dean calls. We see them try to comfort eachother. By the end, we see that they care for eachother. Their relationship has really grown.

Livechat recap: Writing Reader Inserts - How to Reduce the Y/N of It All

We had a great chat in our Discord server about different aspects of writing reader insert fics! Those who were there or have contributed to the discussion after the fact are: @notsofly, @spn-fanfic-reblog-writes, @kazsrm67, @thoughtslikeaminefield, @zepskies, @talltalesandbedtimestories, and @stunudo. Below the cut is a rundown of the points that we discussed!

How do you reduce the use of Y/N and similar placeholders?

Nicknames - This is especially easy when writing SPN because Dean loves giving nicknames to everyone.

For placeholders like Y/H/C and Y/E/C - When writing from the RIC's (Reader Insert Character) POV (Point Of View), this is easy because most people don't consider their own hair or eye color. When writing from another character's POV, like an SPN Character (SPNC), focus on attributes like how eyes can shine, or narrow. Hair can be soft or shiny.

Decide if the detail you're referring to is necessary to the story. If the plot doesn't change without it, do you really need to include it?

How much detail does an RIC need?

Only those details that would change the story if they were different or missing. For example, if a story is about aging/maturity or how a RIC reacts to new tech, then age is necessary.

What specific details should you leave out when possible?

Hair length/style - Some women have very short hair that can't be put into a ponytail or braided. Focus on feel of the hair, not tangling it into someone's fingers.

Weight - You can mention curves and leave the rest to the imagination.

Blushing - You can feel your face get hot, but you can’t really see yourself blushing. Describe the feeling over the appearance. Darker skin tones don't turn noticeably red when blushing.

Race/ethnicity - Unless your story involves ethnic customs or dealing with something specifically racial, this is not a necessary detail.

Clothing - Unless a hunter is dressing up, clothing does not need to be specifically described. Even when dressing up, clothing can be described generically. "A dress in her favorite color that showed off her assets and minimized those little parts of herself she wanted hidden." A job can affect clothing, but just going to the mall or on a date does not. Describe comfort over style.

What is the difference between an OC (Original Character) and a RIC?

Backstory - OC's will usually have a backstory to help define their character. RIC's only need backstory as it pertains to the current story. They can have one, but only what's needed for the story.

Name

Physical description - OC's need to be described but RIC's need to not be described as much as possible.

Does an RI fic need to be in 2nd Person POV?

No. They can also be written in 3rd person omniscient (the audience knows what everyone is thinking) or 3rd person limited POV (the audience only knows what one person is thinking, as if they were in that character's head).

Are RI fics more popular on one platform vs. another?

Yes. RI fics seem to be a lot more popular on Tumblr than on AO3. Tumblr also seems to prefer RIC's over OC's. We don't know why.

Ways to describe eyes that don't involve color?

Focus on the emotions - see emotions in their eyes instead of color

Focus on actions - eyes crinkling, slitting, narrowing, widening. She batted her eyes or looked up at him through her lashes.

Other adjectives besides color - Bright eyes, shining eyes, etc

NO ORBS.

How do you write a Gender Neutral RIC (GNRIC)?

You have to avoid gender stereotypes like women being more emotional and emotionally available while men are more stoic and stubborn. Women and men stereotypically flirt differently. You need to identify those traits in your story and balance them out to neutralize them. Get down to your basic "people" traits for the character.

Who cuddles who? Maybe the SPNC comes to the GNRIC and asks for cuddles? Decide if that kind of thing matters and why.

The GNRIC discussion at the end of our time led to the creation of a writing challenge to explore gender. How would we write a female RIC differently from a male RIC if they were put into the same story? How does knowing this help us to strip gender stereotypes from our story to make a truly gender-neutral RIC? Art Recap 2024

So people in my discord server were interested in seeing an art recap for 2024 (I already did a writing recap on my other blog @heavenssexiestangel)

I think that, overall, 2024 was a somewhat prolific year for my art - I experimented a lot and I am working on drawing more.

I started the year with another work in my DHJ project, the number 8. The project should have been finished in 2024, but unfortunately I didn't have the time and energy, and the project turned from just sketches to full on pieces pretty early on. The project will have 52 pieces, and apart from number 8, I also made number 9 aka "I miss you", number 10 "Chai", number 11 "Kintsugi", number 12, and number 13 "Hope & Rebirth". So it's still a long way to go, but very rewarding.

I also made progress in my Queer Supernatural Project by adding Demisexual Gadreel to the list.

And, speaking of Ree, I also made a sketch of him. It's very different from the rest of my pieces for many reasons, and not exactly the best, but I did learn from it so that's what's important.

I also went back to colored pencils (and an art journal on for spn pieces/sketches) with "A study in eyes". And due to my love for colored pencils and my interest in botanical pieces, I started anì new project with "Fig".

In 2024 I also participated and published as an artist in 2 bangs - the @spnangelsanddemons-rb and the @spnrareshipbang, which resulted in various pieces for 3 different fics. The first was The Fool's Journey with @ladyknightskye for the first bang, while for the second bang I worked on "His Faithful Love" with @samanddean76 and "Twisted Fate" with @reelnaturalfreak.

Stay tuned in 2025, because I joined more bangs :)

And speaking of events, I also joined the Cirque du Freak fanzine with my piece "Madame Truska".

Furthermore, I participated in my first "Draw This in Your Style" on Instagram. I'd like to do more, but who knows.

Drawing animals used to be my fave so I started again this year and also published Herald Cat. I also drew rats as a gift for @michaelmilligan's sister for her bday. I'll surely make more.

So, for me, it was overall a prolific year.
