theres a post going around about this so i have to ask: what would your ocs bring to a potluck? (iirc rizeth is the only one who can cook right?)

oooh this is a good question. now i have to think about what Rizeth can Actually Cook instead of like. vague meals lol

of the Lads in my main collection, yeah, he's the only one with what I'd call a solid actual ability to cook - though he's not a chef, and doesn't really consider his skills like. Skills. He's competent.

But I feel like he'd bring something that pairs with what Ashenivir can make - so like he'd help Shen make some nice sporebread or something, and then make a big ol' soup to go with it, something like that. Something that's tasty but not showy; he doesn't want a bunch of people gushing over how good that was, he just wants to make sure people are fed.

Vizaeth is bringing nothing, if he's even invited to the potluck in the first place. Food is nothing but an Ordeal for that boy.

Zeth'rinn brings a very fancy dessert that he very much did Not make - he's 100% fine with bragging how talented his baker friend is and strongly implying he was eating frosting off of them like five minutes before he showed up.

Rune brings a tray of assorted meats, and Astarion's brought fancy cheese and wine, so between them they've got a functional charcuterie board and are thus my favourite people at the party <3

N - Name three things you wish you saw more or in your main fandom (or a fandom of choice).

BG3, let's go:

To begin with, since beginning to write for BG3, I haven't let myself read much in the way of BG3 fic, out of a fear of accidentally borrowing or letting it influence the way I'm interpreting it. Which is a shame, because I do genuinely believe in a collaborative fandom experience, but it's just part of my writing process.

I see quite a few Drow characters, but not as many who are tied to the lore, and that's a shame because...even though I have Issues with Drow worldbuilding (and, since there's been...confusion on this point in the past, I don't think it's tied to ANY ONE creator, even though I think that RAS has been the most influential and so a lot of positives AND negatives can be laid at his feet, I just think it's a general Drow Problem) there's a LOT of really cool information out there over the years to pick and choose from. Part of what I love about both Symryvvin siblings is finding ways of tying them into Menzoberranzan politics and Drow culture. Kitrye's time at Arach-Tinilith, Qilué Veladorn's death and its impact on Kitrye (I don't like the Lady Penitent series as much as any Eilistraee fan, but it has some GOOD Eilistraean angst if you toss out the...well, the everything else), Kitrye tossing away her house emblem and the significance of that, the Stinkstreets that Malla would have spent her early childhood in, the Festival of the Founding, Kitrye getting excited about the possibility of sporebread once she's back in the Underdark, Malla's training as a Szarkai and her job as an infiltrator...these are all things that help me understand both siblings. And I know I'm mildly insane about it, and there's a lot I toss out as well, because you're dealing with forty years of lore, but it's the sort of thing that I think can really add a lot of texture to a character (and, for non-fic writing purposes, understanding the characters and where they stand in Drow society and with each other REALLY adds some interesting dynamics when you're playing the game.) For Malla, this was obviously the most important, since she IS the Minthara romance character, and she has a lot to say about current Drow politics at any given time, but even with Kitrye, it's useful with her dynamic with Raphael, since there are all these fun little points where they either reflect or contrast against one another. (Kitrye learning Abyssal when she was younger VS Raphael, naturally, being fluent in Infernal, both of them having languages that have different registers and dialects based on status.)

So basically. I like when people treat Drow culture AS a culture and add in those little details, it makes them come alive. I feel like there can be a tendency of overplaying how monstrous Menzoberranzan is...and it is! Or not engaging with it entirely. But it's also interesting to understand WHY it's home to these characters and WHY it's bittersweet for all of them.

As a Raphael Fucker, I love when Raph-centric fic actually does something with Korrilla and her dynamic with Hope. Sometimes, I see Evil Korrilla in fic and...I think that interpretation isn't inherently WRONG, but I think that speaking to Korrilla in-game AND reading between the lines in her documents, there's a lot more going on there as well. She's fucked up! She's also nuanced!

For Raphael specifically, I wish that we had more Magadon Kest popping up because I think he would have a hilarious dynamic with his theatre kid older half-brother and the game already acknowledges him. (On the record: I'm going to have to read all the books that feature Magadon, but I already have plans for him to show up...and they might involve Raphael getting punted across a bar at one point.)

Actually, have a bonus #4: More religious characters. It feels like antitheist Tavs tend to be more common, and I get it, as an atheist myself, particularly in a game that deals so much with abuses of power, but I see so many Tavs where the Big Thing is "and then they realized that the gods didn't care about anyone, they were merely pawns in their games" and...I think that there are ways that that can work for a character (particularly for a Durge...), I'm not writing it off, especially when there are a lot of Tavs I've liked who've had that, but it just...gets a little boring when you see that and it's treated as something edgy and innovative each time. I'm not saying "all Tavs ever MUST be religious", but I'm saying that I think it's good, when designing a character, to think about what works for them, and how that works with the setting. It's interesting, writing for Kitrye as an atheist, because she has this very close, deep bond with her goddess and it's a genuine stretch to try to wrap my head around that, but that's what makes it fun to work with. I think that having a character and giving them a relationship with a deity, particularly with a setting as expansive as The Forgotten Realms is, where you have SO MANY deities running around, can be a great way of building up that character and creating some interesting dynamics in the camp. (I see a lot of clerics of Mystra who happily renounce their goddess and make out with Gale in front of her statue which...fair play, but there's something to be said for having a genuine crisis of faith, and trying to understand WHY she's ordering this, and maybe even seeing the pragmatism of it, while also on the other hand seeing this person you've gotten close to and even grown to love and not being willing to have them sacrifice themself.)

X - A trope which you are almost certain to love in any fandom.

Sun and moon dynamics, particularly when the woman's allowed to be the broody one. I can't resist enemies to lovers hatesex, either.

oh he loves reading, i think he filled up like 85% of House Nydalla's library. he mostly reads books on arcane theory and political strategy, so basically How To Make Friends And Then Betray Them (And Then Cast Fireball), and as for fiction, mostly erotica that he swears is better written than that garbage Minisstra reads, gods, you know we're not stuck reading contrived romance novels, right? good porn exists, Dahlia

Chai: What is your OC’s comfort food/drink?

anything Minisstra feeds him :p semi-serious answer: i think his comfort drink is jasmine tea, and for food i picture it being hearty, yet elevated, i think like pasta or stew is too "rustic" for him. i can see it being some kind of meat (probably rothe) with a wine sauce, roast veggies and sporebread on the side. if he had access to butter, i think he'd like that on his bread.

Matcha: What is your OC’s preferred little treat?

its his tea parties with Minnie :3 green or white tea, little tower of pastries, sitting in their little garden/courtyard talking shit about other Houses

Tav Asks

Thank you kindly!! Gonna answer for both my Tav (Drow Wild Magic Sorcerer) and Reycaryn (Dark Urge - High Elf Rogue)

1.Is your Tav Baldurian? If yes, did they grow up in Baldur's Gate? If no, where are they from?

Tav isn’t Baldurian. She grew up in a small settlement in the Underdark filled with Drow who had forsworn Lolth. Her family worshipped Eilistraee. Things were relative peaceful for living in the Underdark until her unstable magic caused some, uh, minor explosions. Then her family started moving around, avoiding drawing the attention of less friendly faces as long as they could, until Tav eventually found her way to the surface. She’s lived above ground longer than she has in the Underdark by quite a lot by the time she gets tadpoled.

She does miss home terribly though.

Reycaryn is Baldurian. The first time she leaves it is more of an errand run than anytime. Everything to do with the tadpoles has her out of the city properly for the first time. And camping in the dirt definitely wasn’t on her itinerary.

13. Was your Tav well known by others or did they stick to the shadows?

Tav doesn’t stick to the shadows, but she doesn’t build much of a name for herself either. Mostly she was just trying to make her way without people killing her on sight. There are a number of people unlikely to forget her face or name for a few reasons (she’s had clients of many different stripes for many different services. She’d be rather offended if they forgot her, frankly) but she never had much of a claim to fame.

Reycaryn was well known to very few. Before the tadpole, it was in her best interest to stick to the shadows. While she did have a group around her that held her in very high esteem, they weren’t keen to expose her or themselves either. Assassin work doesn’t go as well with too many eyes watching.

19. Any memories that stick out to you/your Tav about their life pre-tadpole?

For Tav, most would be that of being with her family. Her adventures are fun and she wouldn’t give them up, but the simple joys of sitting around a table, verdant and cerulean mushrooms lighting the room from woven ropes suspended from the ceiling? Quiet chatter between bites of deep rothé stew and sporebread? The warmth in one’s chest from knowing you are deeply, irrevocably loved? It’s a joy no amount of loot could replicate.

Unfortunately Reycaryn’s memory is rather spotty. Or perhaps fortunately, as most of what she’s got is… unpleasant. Fear and blood rule most of them.

She does have the faint recollection of sunlight warming her face, her eyes closed to soak in the heat. The world feels still and there is a faint rustling of curtains as a breeze cools her cheek. She wishes she could stay in this place, this moment, forever. Then it fades.

Dalamus is fond of a rothé steak seasoned with funguswood, preferably cooked rare, topped with with browncap mushrooms sautéed with garlic and onions in butter. This is often served with sporebread and a cream sauce, or potatoes.

On the Surface, he is discovering his love for fruit (difficult to get fresh in Menzoberranzan because they can only be obtained through importation, sometimes making them prohibitively expensive depending on the time of year). Citrus is his favorite group, but sour apples are his top favorite fruit.

He also enjoys dried meats for a snack and will happily chew on a piece of jerky throughout the day.
