The Golden touch!

Love yellows and bright golds

One of our personal favourites at this time of year is Choisya ternata ‘Sundance’, its evergreen foliage a luminous chartreuse that holds its glow throughout the year & gives white highly perfumed late spring/summer flowers.

Golden Thyme creeps gently with a scent that reminds us of sun-warmed stone and old herb gardens.

Osteospermum are already beginning to lift their daisy faces to the sun, and of course, no spring garden would be complete without the bold blaze of Forsythia and the delightfully unruly charm of Kerria japonica. Both are excellent for informal planting schemes.

The Azalea mollis are preparing to make their entrance – those rich buttery yellows, flame-tipped edges & strong perfume are always worth the wait. Alongside, the more traditional Azaleas and Rhododendrons which bring depth and contrast with their glossy foliage and generous flower heads.

In pots Bidens sparkle like droplets of gold. Lysimachia nummularia ‘Aurea’, or Creeping Jenny, is making her usual attempt to take over, but looks fab as a trailer in a hanging basket.

For something structural and striking, Lupins are forming their towers – not quite ready to bloom but promising a vertical burst of colour very soon. Later in the season, the deep ochre and bronze tones of Rudbeckia will carry that golden theme right through to the last days of summer.

All of these are thriving here at the nursery, pop in and have a look. We are open seven days a week 10am - 4pm

Brace Yourself, Spring is Coming

Spring arrives on the 20th of March according to the calendar, but Mother Nature does her own thing.

Walking on frozen or wet and soggy soil does a lot of damage to plants and beneficial insects, and it’s best to be patient. Emerging daffodils and other spring bulbs are not a sign it’s time to plant.

If you have to walk on frozen turf take a different path each time to mitigate the damage. To prevent the spread of the deadly oak wilt, pruning of oaks should be done when the trees are dormant.
