On that Thursday in June, Corpus Christi Day, about 10,000 young students were protesting in different parts of Mexico City, especially on the university campus of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN). The march was a show of solidarity with the university movement in Monterrey, which demanded changes in the university law. But it was also a demand for greater political freedom and democratization. On June 10, 1971, students from different parts of the country mobilized in the Federal District (now CDMX) in solidarity with the students of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL) who at that time had demands against the government and the dean's office:

In response, the federal government intensified repression, which led UANL students to ask for support from other universities in the country. The UNAM and the IPN responded to this call by organizing a massive march to the capital's Zócalo (historic center).

The background to this repression was the massacre of October 2, 1968 during a student and popular mobilization where the army and police groups dressed in civilian clothes were used and under the order of President Día Ordaz murdered hundreds of young people and imprisoned in military camps those they considered “leaders” to be tortured.

The Corpus Thursday massacre and the October 2nd massacre were the turning point for hundreds of thousands of young people and the people in general to assume that a democratic change was closed and they decided to take up arms as the only way for a democratic and radical transformation in Mexico.

More than half a century after the massacre, justice has still not been served for the victims. In 2009, former President Luis Echeverría Álvarez, under whose administration the Halconazo occurred, was exonerated for lack of evidence. To date, the exact number of dead, wounded and missing remains uncertain.
