A Bit on Music in Endeavour
A favorite musical moment in Endeavour is at around 04min45s in Scherzo (S8E2) where you hear Wagner’s Prelude to Act III of Tristan und Isolde. Morse has it going on his record player while he dresses for work. We’ve just come off of the first episode of S8 and we’ve seen the degree to which he is starting to fall apart. He’s a mess really. Perfect time for some Wagner.
If you don’t know about Wagner, he was a horrible human being, but an innovative composer. Tristan und Isolde, in particular, is considered a real turning point in composition because of its very intentional use of dissonance. It’s so significant, in fact, that the very first chord you hear in this piece is actually referred to as the “Tristan chord”—one of only about a dozen or so “named” chords in the western musical canon.
The chord just…aches. There’s a really intense urge to hear it move on to its harmonic resolution. You want it to get better!
And this particular prelude is at the beginning of Act III, so if you know the opera, you start to picture it in your mind…
…As Act III opens, Tristan is lies mortally wounded. His faithful servant waits for the arrival of Isolde, the only one who has the power to heal Tristan. A shepherd lad has been instructed to signal the servant by playing a tune on his pipes when the ship carrying Isolde is sighted. They wait, listening. Surely help will arrive in time to save the dying man…
Nope. It’s Gwen.
Another favorite is in Neverland at about 15min. Monica and Morse are in a cozy, domestic scene. He’s doing the crossword. She’s darning a sock. She asks if he’s happy and somewhere along the line you realize that they’re listening to the beginning of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (basically a musical retelling of the crucifixion). By the first time I saw that episode, I’d learned enough about how they used music in the series to guess that things were about to go very, very wrong. There actually was going to be a crucifixion of sorts.
There are so many instances where they use music (both classical—and if you you are lucky enough to be watching the UK versions—popular as well) to either foreshadow or pull a bait-and-switch or to reference another work or otherwise give a scene additional layers of meaning.
It’s just beautifully done—but it’s also done gently. It’s done in such a way that those not “in the know” aren’t left on the outside. There’s nothing crucial that you’re going to miss out on, but at the same time it’s great fun when you see it.

For instance on Good Friday after my father had read me the story of the Passion, I would live, deeply and inwardly moved, in that sorrowful, beautiful, pale and spectral yet monstrously vital world, in Gethsemane and on Golgotha, and when I heard Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion the whole dark majestic glow of suffering in that mysterious world filled me with overpowering, mystical shudders. I still think this music and the “Actus Tragicus” are the epitome of all poetry, all artistic expression.

Fun Facts
According to Annette Isserlis, she was dividing time playing viola with the EBS in this recording and the Taverner Players in theirs for Handel’s Messiah. Chance shared with her in one 2023 episode of her podcast, Tea With Netty, a memory in which American citizen Monoyios pleaded with the USAF colonel to suspend military aerial training for an hour so she could record the aria, “Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben.”
Chance recorded several takes of “Erbarme Dich” (and possibly “So ist mein Jesus nun gefangen,” his duetto with Bonney; “Ach Golgatha, unselges Golgatha!;” and “Sehet, Jesus hat die Hand”) in between rounds of golf. Confessing to Isserlis, he deemed the highlight aria, though his recording of it was one of the very best renditions sung by a countertenor - if not, any gender alto singer - EVER, as very annoying to record multiple takes.

More than Eggs
I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that the Passion of Christ and the Easter story continue to shape Western culture. Whether Christian or not, who isn’t aware of Judas’ betrayal of Jesus for thirty pieces of silver, Peter’s cowardice, Jesus’ trial and crucifixion, or the empty tomb on Sunday morning? We are also familiar with the ritual acts of Pilate washing his hands and releasing…

matthew "matt" murdock | daredevil
back to mcu masterlist
ONE-SHOTS
mini-me
a slice-of-life of mom!reader x dad!matt, in which matt has two new favorite superheros, even if they do attack him, figures out parenting, and can't quite keep his hands off you.
marriage of genuine fradulence
you and matt have been best friends since being raised at st. agnes together, since he beat up a bully for you. now, you work for him at nelson & murdock. but when matt is framed for a crime, and you're the only witness, and there's no way you can give your testimony in a way that both exonerates him and keeps his vigilantism safe... there's one solution anyone can come up with: marital privilege. the only way to keep you from having to testify and matt from prison? marriage.
tatted up, tied down | 18+
you really can't be blamed for what you're doing. if you were in a court of law, you'd plead insanity and win, because really, it's not your fault. it's your husband's, coming home with a new tattoo when he knows what it does to you. but judging by the smirk on his face, he doesn't mind the reaction at all, the smug bastard. which is when you decide to wipe that stupid expression off for good.
ONE-SHOT SERIES
like father, like lover (aka: daddy issues 101) | bruce wayne's daughter reader
if you're being incredibly honest, you have absolutely no idea how you ended up here, in a different world, where the heroes are different and vigilantism is... illegal? and entirely unstructured? the closest this world has to the jla is the avengers, some group that you have a gut feeling is about to go down the toilet, and you've never been so disappointed to be proven right. luckily, there's a brightside, a law firm you've started working with where one of the partners is really cute. and knowing your luck, also a vigilante or something. once again, you've never been so disappointed to be proven right.
BOOKS
for richer or for poorer | wilson fisk's daughter reader
(loosely based on the broadway musical "newsies") in the days of the gilded age, trusts, bosses, and political corruption rule new york city. wilson fisk resides at the top of the pile and doesn't appear that he will come crashing down any time soon. but matt murdock, aka daredevil has had enough of his city being destroyed and the people in it trampled on. so he decides to do something about it. lucky for him, he has an in--someone who is equally as passionate about changing the status quo: wilson fisk's daughter, you.
blind instinct
when you find matt unconscious and bleeding out, your instinct is to take him to the e.r.: good instinct. when they won’t release information on his condition to anyone outside of kin, you lie and say you’re his wife: bad instinct. when matt wakes up from surgery with amnesia, believing when the doctors say you’re married, you play along to keep him safe: you don’t even know how to categorize that one.
the skeletons in my closet, they're resurrecting | wilson fisk's daughter reader
you have been running from your past from as far back as you remember; you want to be something good, something better than how you were raised, want to block out the part of you that's bloodthirsty and ruthless and choke it out of you. but when your father comes knocking, you are unaware of just how much you'll be pulled to the middle of a battle between your closest friends and your closet skeletons.
BOOK SERIES
legally blind ‘verse | mcu!peter parker’s sister reader
(legally blond au, with a sequel and a prequel) reader, the daughter of richard parker and half-sister of peter parker, has always been a little too stubborn for her own good, held on to things a little too tightly. so when her boyfriend tells her he’s done with her, because she isn’t ‘serious’ enough, well… parkers don’t give up. so clearly, the only logical option is to completely deviate from her career plan leading up to this point and go to law school to get him back. and probably fall in love with the cute defense lawyer interning for her professor landman. wait, what?

Chantal Tkachuk Talks Raising NHL Sons Matthew and Brady Tkachuk — and How Their Fights as Kids Helped Them Succeed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NHL mom tells PEOPLE the Tkachuk brothers were always fighting growing up — “but then five minutes later, they’d be back playing together”
Chantal recently spoke with PEOPLE about raising her NHL sons Matthew, 27, and Brady, 25, who have both long carried reputations as two of hockey's toughest players.
“They were typical brothers – busy, competitive,” Chantal recalls, before breaking out into a laugh over how “competitive” they’d get with each other.
“It would usually end up in a tussle at some point,” the NHL mom says. “But then five minutes later, they’d be back playing together.”
Whether they were fighting in the stands during their dad Keith Tkachuk’s games with the St. Louis Blues or down in the basement of the family’s suburban St. Louis home while they were playing each other in stick hockey, Matthew and Brady’s relationship played out like clockwork.
“No question they would get into it from time to time, but that was just part of how they played,” Chantal says, pausing to analyze her two boys. “I think it ended up contributing to them succeeding in what they’re doing now, because they pushed each other so much.”
For the first time in their careers, both Matthew and Brady made the playoffs, which recently concluded its first round. Matthew’s Florida Panthers advanced, while Brady’s Ottawa Senators were eliminated – but not before clawing back from a 3-0 series deficit against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tumblr media
Chantal and Keith, who married in 1997, were at every one of Brady’s games during his playoff debut, and say they will now travel to watch Matthew’s second-round series against Toronto in person.
Chantal says the Tkachuk family always turns out in full support for the boys, dating back to their youth hockey days when Keith’s mother Gerry Tkachuk and Chantal’s late mother Pat Oster — two of Matthew and Brady’s most passionate supporters — would sit alongside her in the stands.
Chantal and Keith also share daughter Taryn, a standout field hockey player at the University of Virginia, which made a deep run in the NCAA Tournament this past November.
“The three of them were busy and active kids, very involved in tons of different sports,” Chantal says. “Growing up, Keith traveled so much that they were my full-time job, but I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I feel so fortunate that I got to be part of everything throughout their lives.
"Now, it’s getting to the point where Keith and I are starting to have more time to ourselves," she says. "But it still gets crazy busy.”
Even though her children’s sporting events still take up a hefty portion of her schedule, Chantal says she and Keith are carving out their own time. Chantal recently visited her father in Winnipeg, and after the Stanley Cup Playoffs are over, she plans to vacation in France with Taryn to celebrate her college graduation.
Next February, Chantal and Keith hope to travel Europe and stop in Italy to watch their sons play side-by-side once again for Team USA when NHL players return to the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“Keith and I are just beside ourselves being able to watch them play on the same team,” Chantal says.
Matthew previously told PEOPLE it was his dream to play on the same team as his younger brother, who he's faced off against a number of times in recent NHL seasons — with mom Chantal watching anxiously from the stands.
“When your kids support one another the way that they do, it makes me feel really proud no matter what,” Chantal tells PEOPLE. "Especially with the boys, because they're competitors on the ice and playing for different teams, but off the ice, they just want the best for one another and will support each other no matter what.”
Chantal adds: “Once the game's over, they just go back to being brothers.”
