365 Day Movie Challenge (2018) - #32: Freeheld (2015) - dir. Peter Sollett
Freeheld chronicles the true story of Laurel Hester (played here by Julianne Moore), an Ocean County, New Jersey police detective who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and subsequently had to fight for the ability to give her pension to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Ellen Page). Laurel and Stacie had to do battle with the New Jersey Board of Chosen Freeholders, who didn’t want to grant posthumous pension rights to a lesbian couple, and Laurel also faced resistance from her fellow cops, most of whom initially adhered to the community’s conservative mindset.
Laurel and Stacie’s main supporters include Dane Wells (Michael Shannon), Laurel’s partner on the force; Steven Goldstein (Steve Carell), a proudly gay lawyer from Garden State Equality who brought his coalition to Ocean County to lobby the freeholders on behalf of Laurel as she got progressively more sick; Lynda Hester (Kelly Deadmon), Laurel’s sister; and Stacie’s mother, Carol Andree (Mary Birdsong). Most of the freeholders, including Pat Gerrity (Dennis Boutsikaris) and Peter Santucci (William Sadler), are vehemently opposed to Laurel’s plea, but a lone rebel, Bryan Kelder (Josh Charles), helps Dane find information that helps the case immensely.
Freeheld is pure Oscar bait from start to finish, but it deserves credit for telling an important LGBTQ story with the utmost respect for its subjects. Page gives the most nuanced performance - the final, deeply emotional close-up on her in the film’s last scene moved me to tears - but Moore and Shannon do typically effective work as well. (Carell isn’t required to be more than a ham in his role, but at least he’s an entertaining ham.) Maryse Alberti’s cinematography is impressive during nighttime scenes, like the opening few minutes on the New Jersey boardwalk and inside a gay bar during Laurel and Stacie’s first date, and Alberti also photographs two important scenes set on a beach with beautiful uses of light. For the acting, the photography and the landmark legal history involved, Freeheld is worth a watch.

FREEHELD (2015)
youtube
We all know Elliot Page, Canada’s Trans Sweetheart, by now.  Whether we know him for his role in “Juno” (2007) or in Netflix’s “Umbrella Academy” (2019-) or something else somewhere in between, he’s been a hugely vocal member of the LGBTQ+ community since his first coming out in 2014.
“Freeheld” is the true story of Laurel Hester and Stacie Andree.  Hester (played by Julianne Moore) is diagnosed with terminal cancer and her and Andree (Elliot Page) have to fight to have Hester’s pension benefits passed on to Andree as her domestic partner.
Page, who also acted as a producer on the film, has stated that his own being in the closet was detrimental to the film’s progress and his own character’s development.  It’s stated that it took six years for the film to be made because it was so imperative that Page come to terms with their own sexuality first.  They stated, “It felt wildly inappropriate to be playing this character as a closeted person”.

FEBRUARY 21: Ellen Page (1987-)
Ellen Page is a Canadian actress usually best known for playing a teen mom in movie Juno, or the Derby Roller skater Bliss, aka Baby Ruthless, in Drew Barrymore’s Whip It. But after she came out on Valentine’s Day three years ago she became an inspiring model and advocate for the LGBT community.
Tumblr media
Portrait of Ellen Page, photographed by Marteen de Boer during the Getty Images Portrait Studio hosted by Eddie Bauer at Village at The Lift on January 24, 2016 in Park City, Utah.
Ellen Grace Philpotts-Page was born on February 21, 1987, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She decided to go to a Buddhist school where meditation and yoga were on the curriculum. She began her film career at 10 in Canadian TV then cinema (with roles for which she collected several awards despite her young age), though started to get international recognition with the 2005 movie Hard Candy, and with her appearance in blockbuster franchise X-Men as Kitty Pride, a girl who has the capacity to walk through walls.
Tumblr media
Still from 2007 movie Juno
She got attention from Hollywood with 2007 movie Juno, for which she received her first Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. She portrays a sassy, independent-minded teenager who gets pregnant at 16 – and her performance was praised by the critics and the general public alike. The movie, which reflects the director’s as well as Page’s mindset, is very much ‘pro-choice’ in that if she decides against getting an abortion, it is after visiting an abortion clinic, and examining all the choices given to her (eventually choosing to give the baby up for adoption).
Indeed Ellen Page describes herself as feminist, “and of course I am ’cause it’s about equality, so I hope everyone is. You know you’re working in a patriarchal society when the word feminist has a weird connotation.” She also dedicates herself to environmental causes and LGBT rights.
Tumblr media
Still from 2015 movie Freeheld with Julianne Moore as Laurel Hester and Ellen Page as Stacie Andree
After other notable performances in Tracey Berkowitz’s The Tracey Fragments, Drew Barrymore’s Whip It, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, or Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love, the project of the film Freeheld came along. The movie is based on 2007 documentary of the same name about the true story of New Jersey police officer Laurel Hester (played by Julianne Moore) who, after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, had to fight against the county’s board of chosen freeholders so that her domestic partner Stacie Andree (Page) could benefit her pension after she passed. With her involvement in the making of the movie (as producer as well as actress) she felt the need and courage to come out of the closet. She explained that it took 6 years to make the movie, and that the process paralleled her own personal journey to come out as gay, as she “felt wildly inappropriate to be playing this character as a closeted person.”
youtube
Ellen Page comes out as gay in her speech in Las Vegas at the Human Rights Campaign's Time to Thrive conference on Valentine’s day in 2014.
“Here I am, an actress, representing at least in some sense an industry that places crushing standards on all of us. (…) Standards of beauty, of good life, of success. Standards that I hate to admit, have affected me. You have ideas planted in your head, thoughts you never had before, that tell you how you have to act, how you have to dress, and who you have to be (i.e. as defined by stereotypes of masculinity and femininity). And I am here today because I am gay. And because maybe I can make a difference.”
In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Page explains that being a closeted person hurt her career more, because she felt sad and uninspired; that she felt guilt for not being out, and felt isolated from the LGBT community. She also revealed in another interview with Elle Magazine that she “would get panic attacks and sense an incredible discomfort because (she) didn’t relate to the conformity that comes with (her) gender.”
Now however she is more excited about life, and experiences a sense of happiness she has not felt before.  Not only does she feel privileged and grateful to be in the position where she can talk about issues and help others less fortunate that she is, but she also is in a relationship with artist and surfer Samantha Thomas.
Since then, she has been involved in several movies, like Tallulah, projects, but mostly TV Series Gaycation, in which she and Ian Daniel explore LGBTQ cultures around the world by meeting travellers and hearing their stories.

Ellen Page Talks LGBTQ Fundraising, Not Watching Movies
Actress and social activist Ellen Page recently witnessed history repeating itself while revisiting acclaimed classic Casablanca. Page noted the 1942 film’s eerie modern-day relevance, “the Nazi presence, but the sort of neutrality of people,” while watching the fraught and tense events – as well as “the romanticism of sacrifice” – unfold as Humphrey Bogart’s Rick Blaine, former freedom fighter and nightclub owner in Casablanca, protects his old flame, Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa, and her husband Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) from Nazis. What stood out after taking another look at director Michael Curtiz’s WWII-set romantic drama: “You have these scenes in this cafe where they’re being shown respect because there’s these officials, even though, needless to say, they’re completely disagreeing.”
Page and writer-filmmaker Jason Reitman, who directed the actress in her Oscar-nominated breakout role in 2007’s Juno, set out to reimagine Casablanca for our Trump-led times, which are similarly fraught and tense for those desperately seeking life in America – and for disenfranchised groups already there. Simply titled Live Read of Casablanca and part of the Live Read Series, this is what Casablanca looks like in 2018 thanks to the diversified scope of Page and Reitman’s Dec. 13 live-read of the classic film at Los Angeles’s Ace Theater: female-led, and very queer. Before the event, a benefit for Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice, a philanthropic organization working exclusively to advance LGBTQ human rights around the globe, Page was eager to perform with an “inclusive” cast who are “fucking awesome.”
“It’s one of the most iconic love stories with some of the most memorable lines of any film ever,” says the 31-year-old actress by phone. “It just seems perfect to sort of recreate it in the way that we are.”
Live-streaming future reads to reach a larger audience is a “good suggestion,” she acknowledged, but for now, “I really encourage people to go to (Astraea’s) website and learn more about their work and what they do, and if they’re able to support in any way at all that would obviously be really amazing.”
Page’s queering and feminizing of Casablanca marches in line with a Hollywood movement bending to minorities as they occupy the narratives of famed and noteworthy but classically cisgender, straight, white works, from the all-black cast remake of Lifetime’s Steel Magnolias to the Latinx-led One Day at a Time, on Netflix, and women taking on roles first depicted by men in Ocean’s 8 and Ghostbusters. “In some ways, people are almost just realizing it,” Page remarks on efforts to portray underrepresented minorities on screen. She says, until recently, the “privileged” American public (see: white people) “haven’t been cognizant” of giving every kind a seat at the table.
Page, who came out in 2014 and married professional dancer and fellow Canadian Emma Portner in 2018, is forthright about the lack of diversity in some of her own films.
“A movie like Whip It, you know, should be more queer,” she says, blatantly. “It’s just that simple.”
youtube
Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, Whip It featured Page as Bliss Cavendar, a Texan teenager living in a fictional town called Bodeen and joining a roller derby team, which includes derby girls played by Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Eve and Juliette Lewis. “It wasn’t a realistic reflection of the derby world, and I wish that was different,” the actress says. “I love that film, just wanna be clear. Love that film, had a fucking blast, met two of my best friends in the universe on the film. But yeah, of course looking back on that, that’s a bummer.”
Released in 2009 by Fox Searchlight Pictures, Page adds, “It’s a reflection of the time. I’d like to think that it would be different now, and I think it actually does show not much has changed, but some things have.”
As demonstrated in recent years, it’s not too late for past works on the wrong side of diversity, so perhaps the unrealistically heterosexual-laden Whip It could be remedied: “If you made a sequel, I would love it,” Page enthuses. “I wish there was a Whip It 2, and she was lesbian.” She giggles, delighted by the thought. “And living in Austin.”
Cut on roles in 2005’s Hard Candy and Juno, Page’s career has dipped into multiple genres: high-budget thrill rides (two X-Men films, Inception), zombie dramas heavy on queer subtext (The Cured), and gay-themed true stories. In the 2015 lesbian biopic Freeheld, Page portrayed Stacie Andree, the partner of Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore), a gay police officer who fought to have her pension benefits transferred to Andree after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Early the following year, the actress’ collaboration with gay friend and co-host Ian Daniel, Viceland’s Gaycation, aired. The show had the activists traveling to countries like Japan, Brazil and Jamaica to investigate the horrific challenges and distinct cultural characteristics of being LGBTQ abroad.
After two seasons, the show returned in April 2017 for a special presentation that examined LGBTQ life in America post Trump. No more episodes are planned, Page apologetically reveals, but she and Daniel are in the early development stages of “a different project that’s similar,” but “less in terms of a travel show, more focused stories.” She adds, “Not that they’ll be in America, by any means.”
Looking back on Gaycation, Page was humbled by the experience, which she says “changed me.” “I mean, you’re meeting people who, every day, are risking their lives, are activists spending their lives doing that, and sacrifice so much to do that. That’s a level of bravery and courage that I’d like to think I’m capable of, but I’m probably not.”
Meeting transgender activist and famed Stonewall rioter Miss Major for the first season’s finale was an unforgettable moment for the actress when thinking of “a force and a person who is someone who’s ultimately been responsible for so much change for the community.”
After Gaycation, Page has continued to tackle projects that are extensions of her own lesbian identity, such as this year’s The Cured, an allegorically queer zombie film from out filmmaker David Freyne. Recent LGBTQ films evade her simply because “I’ve, like, literally barely watched movies. It’s been a problem.” She immediately retracts: “Not a problem – but the last year or two, quite frankly, I don’t know, but just for some reason I haven’t really watched movies.” Apologizing for missing this year’s impressive slate of LGBTQ films (she did ask for recommendations), Page says she thoroughly enjoyed the “stunning” Tomboy, a 2011 French drama she says is still fresh on her mind.
youtube
Seemingly more queer-content creator than consumer, she just wrapped shooting the revival of Armistead Maupin’s 1993 TV adaptation of his Tales of the City books, where she joins original cast members Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis in the 10-part Netflix series, due in 2019. Page refrained from sharing specific details as requested by showrunners, but Netflix’s contemporary Tales is set 20 years later, as Mary Ann (Linney) returns to San Francisco to her ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross) and daughter Shawna (Page), as well as Anna Madrigal (Dukakis) and a motley crew of other 28 Barbary Lane residents.
“I have a love interest, played by Zosia Mamet,” Page says of her co-star, best known for her role on HBO’s Girls. “Zosia’s amazing. She absolutely blew me away. I had such a wonderful time working with her. She is such a phenomenal actor, so yeah, that was awesome.”
And acting alongside Dukakis and Linney: “It’s crazy, right? Yeah, walking in and working with someone like Laura Linney, who is absolutely one of my favorites of all time – and, of course, Olympia – I felt so welcomed,” she says. “You couldn’t be working with more lovely, sincere, they-do-this-job-because-they-just-fucking-love-it (people).”
Says Page, “It’s about connecting with another actor, not to sound all actor-y and cheesy, but that is such a joy, to be in an environment like that. So to have the opportunity to be able to work with someone like Laura, and to be a part of this in terms of the stories and the narratives and the representation, yeah, I feel very lucky that I was included.”
